Top Ten Reasons on Why Businesses Should Be a Member of the Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber:

The PNRC helps you build your network. With over 150 networking events planned for 2023, the chamber provides numerous opportunities for you to build relationships and expand your area of influence. Weekly Connections meetings, monthly Business After Hours and numerous other events allow you to choose the venue you prefer at a time that fits your schedule.

There are numerous ways that you can continue your professional development. The Marketing and Social Media Conference, the Nonprofit Conference, the Corridors emagazine, Women’s Leadership groups, Young Professionals activities, Nonprofit North meetings and the incorporation of presentations into many of our networking meetings help you stay up to date on current trends and problem solve.

The PNRC gives you a connection to the community. With events like the Cranberry Farmer’s Market, the Holiday Village Market and the Health and Wellness Fair, to name a few, the chamber gives local businesses a chance to get in front of the local community.

The PNRC helps you give back. There is a philanthropic side to the chamber. The Giving Tree program collects gifts during the holidays for those in need. In 2022, through exposure given by local businesses, we collected over 1000 gifts from generous local residents. The chamber also awards college and trade school scholarships, promotes Days of Caring for Nonprofit organizations and has “adopted” a local highway.

Add to your social calendar. With events like the Second Chance Prom and the Holiday Social, you can mix social with business.

You’ll have numerous ways to promote your business. In addition to networking, you can gain exposure for your business through your listing on our website, post member news, share your “deals”, post job openings, post on our Facebook members page, sponsor events, advertise in our communications and much more.

You can take advantage of special programs that are designed especially for small businesses. Whether it is healthcare, business insurance, energy, credit card processing, business coaching, legal help or a host of other needs, the chamber has partnered with providers to develop Affinity Programs that will meet your desires.

When you are in the market to buy something, you’ll be a better educated consumer. Everyone does business with people that they know, like and trust. Not only will that help you build relationships to sell your product, you’ll also know who you want to do business with when you have a need.

Membership comes with plenty of free benefits. Ribbon cuttings, networking at Connections meetings, membership to the PA Chamber, use of our bulk mail postage permit, an online business directory listing are just a few of the benefits that come free as part of your membership.

All employees in a member company are eligible for the benefits of chamber membership. That includes member discounts for events, member to member special deals, etc.

Bonus reason- a recent study showed that consumers are 63% more likely to use the products and services of a chamber member over a non-chamber member.

For more information about the chamber and/or becoming a member, check out our website at www.pghnorthchamber.com or call us at 724 934-9700.

Maggie Simpson

“Maggie approached the chamber with the idea for the Comcast Business Cash Mob. The program supported “shop local” by covering ½ of the cost of customer’s purchases at local retailers and restaurants. Comcast Business funded the entire program, and it was an overwhelming success. Through the program, we were able to generate over $10,000 in additional revenue for ten local businesses. The businesses, as well as the customers, were so appreciative, many said that they were going to pay it forward. All the credit goes to Maggie. We are proud to have her and Comcast Business as a partner”.

Community Champions

2020 was one of the most challenging years in recent history. Despite the obstacles we faced, there were those who became our champions and beacons of light to the area. We all hear about the negative things happening in the world around us, and it can be challenging to both see and recognize the good going on. We launched Community Champions with the goal of recognizing much of the good going on in our communities. The hope is to inspire others to go above and beyond. We asked you to submit your nominations for Community Champion honorees and you responded!

Our Community Champions program has recognized dozens of individuals, small businesses, and nonprofits who have stepped up to help out our communities since we launched the program in 2020. We received 24 different nominations this year and have recognized these honorees over the month of January. Stay tuned over the month of February as we visit an honoree from each of the three categories to help their story and good deeds reach and inspire more in our communities.

We would like to thank all of you for helping us recognize the good going on, from submitted nominations to engaging with our Community Champion posts on social media. We would like to thank everyone who is going above and beyond in our communities helping others, raising awareness on different issues, raising funds for a cause, and doing good.

We would also like to thank our Community Champions Category sponsors:

• Individual: USX Federal Credit Union

• Small Business: Mars Bank

• Nonprofit: PNC Bank

The Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber does a lot of work with different municipalities, businesses, nonprofits, and residents in the communities we serve and beyond. The Chamber cares deeply for our communities and the people in them. We are passionate about the Community Champions program and we hope to see it grow year after year. As we progress through 2023, look for the good going on around you, and please submit Community Champion nominees when the nominations open in December of this year. If you are doing all you can to do good in our communities, we hope to recognize you as a Community Champion next year to thank you and to inspire others.

9 Unique Ways to Spread Kindness on Random Acts of Kindness Day

Authored by: General Mailbox

Too many times we forget the impact that simple gestures can make – a kind word, a lending ear, a comforting hug, or a warm and simple smile. We often forget that these simple things actually have the power to turn lives around and make someone’s day brighter. This is exactly why National Random Acts of Kindness Day is being celebrated – to encourage everyone to spread kindness.

National Random Acts of Kindness is celebrated every February 17. It first originated in 1995 in Denver, Colorado and in 2004, spread to New Zealand. The idea behind this celebration is to make the world a little brighter and better through little and simple kind gestures, words and actions. It isn’t too much to do, really, but the way it impacts other people is what gives us the most rewarding feeling.

While National Random Acts of Kindness Day is observed on only one day of this month, sprinkling kindness around is something you can do the whole year! As to how you will do it is entirely up to you.

Unique ways for you to celebrate National Random Acts of Kindness Day

Leave an anonymous sticky note for your co-workers

We never know when someone’s having a bad day or when they need comfort the most. Putting up an anonymous note with kind, encouraging words can go a long way in making someone’s day a little better.

Compliment a stranger

It isn’t every day that we get to hear compliments from the people we know, let alone from strangers. It would surely make a person’s day when you give them a random compliment. Noticed someone wearing a nice pair of shoes? Tell them about it. Or if you’re happy with the service you received from the staff in the café, compliment and thank them for it.

Donate some groceries to your local food bank

The act of sharing always feels more rewarding than getting something for yourself. Share some food and grocery items with those who need them most.

Greet a person standing next to you in the elevator

A simple good morning can go a long way. Why don’t you greet the person next to you in the elevator? Also, don’t forget to flash a warm and friendly smile when you do.

Page 8 Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber

Surprise someone with some homemade meals or goodies

It is true that food binds people together. When you feel like working around the kitchen and making some delicious homemade treats or goodies, don’t forget to share. Surprise your co-worker or a neighbor! They’d be happy to dig into a delicious treat prepared with love.

Take time to thank the people you love

Appreciating or thanking the people we love is something we often forget. Make it a point to thank them. Let them know how glad you are for having them around. Leave them a note, give them a quick call, shoot them an email or better yet, say it in person. You’ll never know how much a simple “thank you” will mean to them.

Reconnect with an old friend

People come and go, but there are a few friends who will always stick around. Maybe you have friends whom you haven’t seen or talked to in a while. Give them a ring and ask how they have been doing. Try to catch up or invite them out so you could spend quality time together.

Donate dog or cat food to the animal shelter

Whether or not you’re someone who loves animals, donate some dog and cat food to the animal shelter near you. Most animal shelters rely on donations. It makes a huge difference when you can extend some help to animals in need.

Run an errand for a busy family member

Got a little spare time? Use it to run an errand for a busy family member. They will be grateful for the kind gesture.

It is nice to think that National Random Acts of Kindness is being celebrated every year as a holiday. However, sprinkling kindness everywhere you go does not require a holiday. It is something we can do daily to make a difference. Brighten someone’s life without expecting anything in return.

Stuck in a rut? Focus on self improvement and make an impact

Many people get to a point in their lives when they feel stuck in a rut. Day in and day out, everything is the same. Punch a clock here, drive there, watch this, go to bed, and do the same thing the next day. A poll conducted by SWNS Digital found that 80% of Americans admit to feeling stuck in a routine.

Most people who participated in the survey think their lives mimic the scenes from "Groundhog Day," where the same things keep playing daily. Nearly half of the people felt that their routine was too narrow. The good news is that those who feel stuck in the routine of life can take action to help shake things up in a good way.

Here are ways to make meaningful changes to become unstuck this month:

• Get real. Be honest with yourself. It's time to take stock of what is going on, identify the problems, and commit to doing the work to achieve something new.

• Make a plan. There are a few things that need mapping out. Determine those things by deciding what needs to be changed and when.

• Hone in on the negativity that needs to be removed and plan the phasing out of it.

• Focus on impact. To get out of a rut, there has to be a shift that makes an impact.

• Determine where the most effect and change is desired, such as in one’s professional life, personal life, or both.

• Change your perspective. It’s all about the mindset. One’s perspective is how one views things. Two people can look at the same thing, and both may have different takes on what is happening.

Page 12 Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber

When we change our perspective and start seeing things from a more positive light, we will tend to get great results and enjoy life more.

Changing perspective can change everything, even though nothing physically has changed in front of us. It's all about working on having a healthy and positive attitude.

The truth is that most people are holding themselves back through their thoughts. Learning how to mind your thoughts is powerful and life-changing. It's the key to moving forward and making an impact.

2023 WILL SEE PUSH FOR FINANCIAL WELLNESS

Soaring inflationary pressures and mounting recession fears have combined with pandemic and employment concerns to create a heightened level of financial stress among employees. For employers, this represents both a dilemma and an opportunity. The employee benefit portfolio that may have worked well in the past may not adequately address these needs going forward. By investing in planning and some resources, however, business owners can both demonstrate their concern for employees and solidify if not increase worker morale and productivity at the same time.

Here are a few programs employers can implement to show their support:

Emergency Savings Accounts

By creating an emergency savings account (ESA) for employees, business owners can help workers save for financial emergencies by allowing deposits of after-tax dollars from their paycheck into a savings account. Workers can then withdraw the funds as needed via a debit card or electronic transfer. An ESA eliminates the need for workers to have the discipline and time to manually save the money. As a bonus, employers can offer incentives to employees, such as a matching deposit (up to specified limits).

Lifestyle Spending Accounts

Lifestyle Spending Accounts (LSA) provide a method for employers to assist their employees in paying for health, wellness expenses and even other costs that are not typically covered under a group health insurance program. Many business owners like LSAs since they can decide which expenses are reimbursable and how much each employee receives. Unlike flexible spending accounts, employers fund the LSA with money that is taxable to the employee after it is spent.

Student Loan Assistance

Companies can design programs to either make tuition payments to the loan servicer or directly to the employee. Eligible candidates can be required to have been working for the company for a specified minimum period of time or have successfully completed a degree. Typically, an employer matches annual payments made by the student and can set a lifetime cap. As an example, a company can match annual payments up to $2500 per year and/ or a lifetime cap of $10,000.

Financial Guidance Resources

These programs, sponsored by an employer, can provide access to resources and tools focusing on assisting employees in their effort to gain financial literacy. The business owner may utilize a wide range of options, including a partnership with financial consultants that can provide workplace seminars, speaking with employees concerning their financial needs and educating the staff on budgeting, saving, investing and managing debt.

A Letter to Governor Shapiro: Workforce Problems and Solutions

Dear Governor, Workforce is Number One of Businesses’ Top Five concerns for the Governor’s TO DO List.

At the Business Issues Forum, 11/17/22, at CNX Resources employers were asked

“What are your top five concerns for the Governor’s TO DO List?” The top concern is workforce. Watch for the February edition of The Hill Report for the other top four concerns.

Employers cannot find and hire enough good people. Illustrating the extreme, a health care organization has 900 beds offline because of inadequate staffing.

What factors do employers believe contribute to the work force shortage?

• A lack of affordable childcare is keeping some women out of the workforce.

• When young people live with parents, they are not under pressure to find a job immediately. They can wait for perfect job

• Some people choose to work in the cash-only, underground economy and continue to collect benefits.

• The gig economy siphons off workers. For example, people make money performing unusual services on YouTube and other platforms such as playing video games for profit.

• Older people are retiring which raises critical questions “How do you replace aging workers? ”and “How can we train and recruit young workers?”

• Employee expectations are increased because they know for certain types of positions they can go elsewhere and find a new and better job.

• There is a smaller universe of potential employees in PA due to demographics.

• It is challenging to recruit because in some cases employees desire flexible work environment to work remotely or hybrid arrangements.

Workforce Solutions Suggested for Consideration by the Governor.

• Use your position and change the go-to-college message to support for post-secondary education, a focus which accommodates many more students. They need to be reached at an early age with that message.

• Invest more in trade and vo-tech schools and other types of training programs needed to provide current and potential workers with the skills to complete tasks.

• Ensure equitable funding of charter schools, address communities that are in need as public education has haves and have-nots, and hold discussions on school district issues, potential mergers etc.

• Reduce barriers for the formerly incarcerated. Second chance hiring of former inmates is slow to catch on as a possible solution because it has a negative perception. Former inmates face a multitude of barriers such as acquiring training, transportation, and housing. They are not eligible for public housing.

• Level out the playing field by creating very-portable benefits with a minimum number of hours required. One suggestion is to create a state-run insurance exchange for gig economy and part-time workers.

• Increase the requirements to collect and maintain unemployment compensation.

Affinity Partner Program Launch: The Flourish Group

Employee Well-Being Matters – You and Your Team Should be Flourishing

The heart and soul of any small business, entrepreneurial endeavor or non-profit organization are the people who keep it thriving every day. People who believe in the mission, are committed to those they serve, and go above and beyond to help the organization grow. Keeping them healthy, and happy is the right thing to do as an employer and keeping them engaged on the job and productive is critical to an organization’s long-term success. Recruiting, retaining, and creating loyal teams starts with building a desirable culture built on respect, support, and appreciation. One foundational component of that strategy should be a workplace wellness program. With burnout, stress, and exhaustion at an all-time high, the well-being of you and your team matters more than ever. Big corporations understand that, and the smart ones have put in place benefits that show their employees their health and wellness is a priority. But the average entrepreneur, small business owner or smaller non-profit organization typically doesn't have the time, money, or resources to implement a robust program that can compete with the bigger employers. That's where Flourish@Work comes in.

Created by PNRC member Niki Campbell, Founder of The Flourish Group, Flourish@Work is a comprehensive online wellness platform that delivers high-value health and wellness content that’s easy to access and convenient for a business and its employees.

Flourish@Work Provides:

• Coaching, support, and accountability along the way to help them create a healthier lifestyle.

• Regular interactions with experts in wellness to provide credible and authentic advice for making healthy changes.

• Goal-setting, habit and progress tracking, and an online support and accountability group with like-minded professionals on a journey to better well-being.

With Flourish@Work, you get all the benefits of a customized wellness program without the cost or headache of scheduling workshops, creating wellness content, emailing out information, dealing with the technology, etc. We do all the work! All you do is provide us with employee information and encourage your team to take advantage of this awesome employee benefit.

We know providing benefits to your employees can be expensive and cumbersome to implement. We've designed Flourish@Work to be accessible and affordable to any small business, non-profit organization, or entrepreneur. Pricing as low as $99/year/employee and Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber members receive a 10% discount. With full implementation support, original content, and unmatched service, Flourish@Work is a no-brainer for busy professionals and thriving organizations that want to Flourish in their personal and professional lives. Career Fair at North Catholic High School: Sponsored by HYPE

Students preparing for careers can be a daunting task. Several factors play into the age-old question of “What do you want to be when you grow up?” nowadays isn’t very simple. Whether not knowing what is required to go into a particular field or pinpointing certain interests are some of the struggles that young adults have when transitioning out of high school into a working world. Additionally, the financial burden that some students face after graduating from higher learning is more profound in this current economy. Now, more than ever, a Career Fair where students can explore many options and interests can help drive an individual down the correct career path suitable for him or her.

The Young Professional Group of the Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber of Commerce, HYPE, has identified this as a real problem and offered a solution. Having the platform of a Chamber of Commerce and all its members behind them, the HYPE Committee is proud to announce a Career Fair for students.

North Catholic High School will be the host of this first-time ever Career Fair. High School Juniors and Seniors of North Catholic will take part in a 2-hour long career exploration on Friday, February 17th. Many industries will be present ranging from careers needing four-year degrees or higher, two-year degrees, certifications, and high school diplomas. Students will go around to 30 different tables to hear about certain skill sets needed to perform tasks within industries; the schooling and/or training required to meet industry standards; certifications and background checks needed; and potential internship opportunities that are needed, to complete a program of study, and possibly available. Some employers may also be offering employment opportunities for the summer as well, based on age requirements.

If you are a member of the Chamber and are interested in becoming a part of this event, please contact Carrie Nolan-Robson at crobson@pghnorthchamber.com or call 724-9349700 ext. 18.
