HED: Fore! Family Fun for Everyone at Cranberry Highlands

A day on the links can be equal parts relaxing and challenging.

No matter the skill level, Cranberry Highlands Golf Course offers the perfect mix of challenge and accessibility for every member of the family.

Voted Pennsylvania’s best municipal golf course in 2009 by Golf Digest, Cranberry Highlands celebrates Western Pennsylvania’s rugged natural landscape with a stunning 186-acre, par-70 course created to provide a quality test of golf for players of every skill level.

Featuring 90 sculpted sand bunkers and water hazards with more than 70 separate tee areas, Cranberry Highlands presents a demanding course with fairways and roughs outlined in 14 varieties of grass. From its front tees at 4,769 yards, to its championship back tees at 6,590 yards, players will find a walkable course, discreetly linked by cart paths, and surrounded by timber-stock that defines the region

The facility features a full-service pro shop, grill room, an indoor banquet and meeting facility with seating for 150, an outdoor pavilion which seats 100, golf instruction via private lessons and clinics, and two practice putting greens.

Cranberry Highlands features a well-balanced natural environment in which golfers and wildlife live in harmony. In January 2009, Cranberry Highlands became a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, which recognizes the extensive program of environmentally sensitive property management methods.

Sound intimidating?

One doesn’t need to be a PGA professional to enjoy Cranberry Highlands, as the course offers both adult and junior lessons to help players of all skill levels step up their game.

As part of the PGA Junior League, instructor Alex Witouski strives to introduce and instruct the next generation of golfers on the finer points of the game, while also relating the challenges to daily life.

A 2020 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania majoring in Professional Golf Management, Witouski has spent his post-graduate years teaching both in private 1-on-1 lessons and group settings. With 18 years of experience himself despite his age, he considers himself a “student of the game,” and he enjoys passing that passion on to the next generation.

That includes interested players aged 16 and under at all levels of proficiency –including those new to the sport. As part of the PGA’s Junior League, children receive expert coaching along with organized team practice sessions and regular matches. Players wear customizable numbered jerseys and compete on teams in a twoperson scramble format that encourages mentorship and builds confidence. The season includes 4-to-6 matches, and all participants get to play in every competition For the more experienced player, Cranberry Highlands also offers an array of adult individual and private lessons, as well as clinics throghout the season. Led by PGA Professional Terry McGrath, appointments are available Wednesday through Sunday and can be scheduled ahead of time.

For more information on lessons, the course, and more, visit cranberryhighlands.com.

Supplementing Base Coverage with Limited Benefit Plans

In the dynamic environment of employee benefits, employers are continually working to provide comprehensive coverage that meets the diverse needs of their company’s workforce Limited benefit plans have emerged as a pragmatic solution, offering targeted coverage for specific healthcare needs or financial protections.

Limited benefit plans, also commonly known as mini-med or fixed indemnity plans, are benefit options that possess a reduced and more restricted level of benefits when compared with comprehensive medical plans, but with lower premiums as well. They typically offer coverage for specific or targeted healthcare services or financial protections with predetermined limits Limited-benefit plans can include critical illness plans, indemnity plans and “hospital cash” policies. These plans are not regulated by the Affordable Care Act, and it is not advisable that they serve as an individual’s only medical coverage. However, in most situations they can be a good supplement to a base and more comprehensive medical plan

Applicability of a Limited Health Plan

Limited health plans can be beneficial for those who feel they need additional coverage that goes beyond their traditional health insurance plans. Though they are not intended to be a replacement for major medical health insurance, limited plans can be a good supplement to some major medical plans, such as those with a high deductible

Individuals covered through a high deductible health plan (HDHP) can often benefit from enrolling in Limited Benefit Plans. Although HDHPs offer comprehensive coverage, the standard copay aspect of the plan does not kick in for any services outside of preventative care until the deductible is met. That could mean that the individual or their family can be exposed to significant up-front out-of-pocket expenses. A limited health plan can help offset the deductible in some instances, depending on what the limited plan covers.

Though not intended as a replacement for major health insurance, limited plans can still provide at least some level of financial coverage for those without a comprehensive base medical plan. Limited plans might especially work well for individuals that need temporary stop-gap coverage until their more comprehensive insurance program goes into effect, for those who were recently laid off or are in-between jobs, for younger individuals aging off of their parent’s health insurance, individuals who have lost their medical coverage, selfemployed persons without access to group coverage or anyone looking to offset the costs associated with high deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses

The Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber offers its members access to My Benefit Advisor as a solution for employee benefits, including voluntary offerings. For more information about My Benefit Advisor, visit our website at pnrcmybenefitadvisorcom or contact Craig Pritts at (800) 377-3536.

Spotlight Questions

Nonprofit Spotlight

What impact does your organization wish to make in the world?

An adaptive bike helps to make riding a bike possible for kids with disabilities. The only obstacle here is that these individually customized adaptive bikes are very expensive, and for many families, it is not something that is completely out of reach for them.

An adaptive strollers can fill the gap for all the times when you need a simpler way to get around and to ensure safety. Without it, many families are isolated, and kids are left out or left behind.

For many children in our community, they are using a communication device in school or therapy to talk, but many only get to use it for brief periods of time and a majority are not able to take it home. So, when school ends, children have to shut off their voice.

A communication device and a prescribed communication app on it are costly and out of reach for many, and Variety wants to help families with it.

What needs would help your organization to put your mission into action?

Variety values any donation of time, expertise, and financial support. You can make a difference, and we would love to partner with you.

Who Can Give?

Nonprofit Spotlight

Anyone can give! Whether it is an individual or an organization (e.g. corporate, business, civic, religious, educational) – an employee or employer – a girl scout or boy scout troop – a sport team – a Rotary, Lions, or Kiwanis Club… anyone has the ability to make a difference at Variety, and we would love the chance to work together with you to make it happen.

Why Give?

Variety is a very small (but mighty) organization that gives its full heart to enabling children with disabilities to live life to the fullest. These amazing kids have so many possibilities to their lives, but sometimes, they simply need the opportunity to discover them. Variety tries to provide those opportunities through adaptive bikes, adaptive strollers, communication devices, and other inclusive experiences for families to be together and have fun. Your gift helps to make this work possible, and we thank you for it.

Do you have an IP Strategy for Global Markets?

Your company’s brand name, logo, innovative technology, proprietary designs, and “secret sauce” comprise your company's intellectual property (IP) portfolio. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) defines IP as “creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; design; and symbols, names and images used in commerce” These intangible assets differentiate your business from the competition and give you a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Unfortunately, many business owners are often unaware that intellectual property is a valuable asset that should be protected, leaving them vulnerable to copyright piracy, trademark counterfeiting, and/or patent infringement. Such nefarious activities pose a threat to U.S. businesses in terms of unfair competition and disruptions to supply chains.

If you plan on selling, distributing, or sourcing your products abroad, it’s recommended to secure the appropriate forms of IP protection before doing business in another country. The first step is to file for IP protection in the United States. In the United States, different types of intellectual property can be protected by different means such as patents, copyright, and trademarks. It’s important to note that a registered IP right in the United States does not safeguard you internationally; these protections are territorial. Therefore, you must be the first inventor to file for protection in the countries in which you currently do business, or those in which you are certain to do business in the future. Furthermore, filing for protection in countries well-known as counterfeit markets can be advantageous even if you do not plan to do business in that market.

The circumstances for determining what type of IP protection is best for your business may be complicated and will differ for each individual business. Some issues to consider when determining if filing for protection is right for your business include:

Will I be conducting business outside of the United States?

Do I plan to export my goods?

Do I plan to manufacture my product overseas?

What is the likelihood of my product being copied abroad?

Can I afford international IP protection? If so, in what markets would my product be most likely to be sold?

What forms of IP protection are available to me?

What would be the impact to my business if faced with IPR theft internationally?

Recognizing that many small businesses may not have the knowledge, expertise, or resources to craft an appropriate IP strategy, the U.S. Department of Commerce as well as other government agencies have developed tools and resources to help small companies identify, protect, and enforce their IP in specific markets, for example:

The U.S. PTO IP Identifier helps individuals and companies learn how to identify creative ideas that might be intellectual property and how to protect them. STOPfakes.gov is a one-stop shop for U.S. government tools and resources on IPR. This website includes IPR Toolkits by industry and by country.

U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Intellectual Property Attaché Program deploys diplomats to Brazil, China, Europe, India, Mexico, Peru, Thailand, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, and the U.S. Mission to WIPO, United Nations, and the World Trade Organization. They work to improve IP systems internationally by directly assisting U.S. stakeholders such as businesses, legal representatives, and rights holders by counseling them on entering new markets, resolving issues related to obtaining IP rights in foreign jurisdictions, and helping to address IP enforcement challenges abroad.

Intellectual property protection is critical to fostering innovation that leads to job creation and economic growth Let the Pittsburgh office of the US Commercial Service connect you to these resources.

Ryan Russell is the Director of the U.S. Commercial Service Pittsburgh Office and can be reached at Ryan.Russell@trade.gov or (412) 644-2817

Highlights from Senator Devlin Robinson’s Office

Things have been busy in the 37th Senate District and in Harrisburg as my colleagues and I work on a state budget. Here are some quick highlights from my office:

The Senate recently approved my ‘Ready to Succeed Scholarship Program’ bill It would make it easier for families & students to better afford higher education opportunities.

The Governor recently signed my Max Manufacturing Initiative Act. It would bring jobs to PA by offering grants and loans to companies and state-related universities that drive innovation and produce high-value products in advanced manufacturing.

I am honored to join Sen. Kane and Sen. Tartaglione in promoting Construction Opioid Awareness Week July 22-26. It is critical that we educate all about the dangers of opioid abuse and provide resources to those struggling. Due to the physical demands of the industry, construction workers are susceptible to prescription abuse and addiction.

Several of my bills received committee approval in the past few weeks and months: expansion of biomarker testing, disabled veteran hunting permits, mutual thrift institutions tax reduction for small community banks, strengthening penalties for those trafficking fentanyl, allowing non-profits to utilize online payments for raffle tickets, and many more. I’m thankful to hear what my constituents need, and be able to act upon it in my capacity as state senator.

Thank you. It is my honor to serve you.
