Summer Musical Theater Camp 2025 at the Gargaro Theater

A NOTE FROM PMT’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Friends, welcome to Pittsburgh Musical Theater’s Summer Musical Theater productions!

Each summer at PMT is special—but this one marks a particularly exciting chapter in our story. As you may know, we’ve officially launched our Comprehensive Campaign, a bold and transformative effort to elevate everything we do—from the experiences of our students and families to the accessibility and comfort of our facilities.

Our building is currently buzzing with progress. While the sights and sounds of construction may be a little loud or inconvenient at times, they are the sound of possibility and a promise being fulfilled. When finished, this project will result in a more welcoming, inclusive, and dynamic space for everyone in the PMT community.

To all the parents, families, and friends joining us today - thank you. Your support, your belief in the arts, and your incredible patience during this time of growth mean the world to us. Your kids are not just part of a program; they are part of something bigger helping to build the future of arts education right here in Pittsburgh.

Thank you for being on this journey with us. Let’s celebrate the magic of musical theater together—and the powerful community that makes it all possible.

With gratitude and excitement,

ELEVATE THE PMT EXPERIENCE FOR ALL

PITTSBURGH MUSICAL THEATER IS IN MOTION -

leading a $20 million comprehensive campaign to transform our 110-year-old school building in Pittsburgh’s historic West End into a state-of-the-art performing arts center.

This transformation isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about:

• Expanding accessibility •

• Boosting economic impact •

• Creating new community spaces •

All at a location that already welcomes nearly 20,000 visitors annually.

THIS IS MORE THAN A RENOVATION.

It’s an investment in access, opportunity, and the future of performing arts in Pittsburgh.

WHAT IS A YOUNG ARTIST PRODUCTION?

The foundation of PMT’s mission is built on arts education, development, mentorship, and providing performance opportunities for young artists. Students at PMT Conservatory receive a truly unique experience to use their training in fully produced productions of their own in which they take on roles as performers and technical theater crew.

Whether a student wishes to pursue a career in the arts or another field, Young Artist Productions provide an opportunity for growth and building transferable life skills in our future leaders. Patrons attending Young Artist Productions will be a part of it all as they experience and enjoy the best of our region’s talented youth in professional-quality entertainment!

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF CAROUSEL

Carousel is a special show. Not just for it’s vast array of beautiful moments or soaring musical score, but for it’s willingness to progress the evolution of the American musical.

From an educational standpoint, Carousel teaches many lessons. Along with the historical significance of putting up a classic musical with a specific structure, it pushes the boundaries of classism, life in small town America, and gender dynamics of the late 1800’s. Although these themes can be presented in a way that seems dated or stale, Rodgers and Hammerstein created a style and point of view that allows these themes to transcend generational barriers, to highlight significant issues that are unfortunately still a part of modern society.

I grew up listening to classic musicals like Oklahoma, South Pacific, and of course Carousel, as well as watching their timeless movie adaptations. However, my first real artistic rendezvous with this type of material was working on a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical review entitled A Grand Night for Singing. I was fortunate to work on this production with lifelong friends, including my dear wife, Caroline. It was also the last chance to work with one of my mentors and an extraordinary theater director, Jack Allison.

Jack taught musical theater and directed many shows at Point Park University. Caroline and I both learned a great deal from him and still apply those lessons today. He was a true man of the theater

and an exceptional artist. Like Billy Bigelow, Jack had many flaws, as we all do. But, Jack had a heart that could fill any room with love and joy. It showed the most in his work.

Carousel was Jack’s favorite musical. I hope to one day be the amazing mentor and educator he was many who were affected by his brilliance and artistic prowess. I dedicate this show to Jack.

Rest in peace my friend. Because of you, I know in my heart that we will never walk alone.
