On the cover... “Old is old at any age. Old is when you quit asking questions about this, that and everything. Old is when you forget how to love — or worse, don’t care. Old is when you don’t want to dance anymore. Old is when you don’t want to learn anything new except how to be old. Old is when people tell you that you are old — and you believe them.”

SSA announces new online service for replacement Social Security Cards in commonwealth The Social Security Administration introduced the expansion of online services for residents of Pennsylvania available through its my Social Security portal at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. Carolyn Colvin, acting commissioner of Social Security, announced that residents of Pennsylvania can use the portal for many replacement Social Security number card requests. This will allow people to replace their SSN card from the comfort of their home or office, without the need to travel to a Social Security office. “I’m thrilled about this newest online feature to the agency’s my Social Security portal and the added convenience we are providing residents of Pennsylvania,” Colvin said. “We continue to provide world-class customer service to the public by making it safe, fast and easy for people to do business with us online and have a positive government experience. I look forward to expanding this service option across the country.” The agency plans to conduct a gradual roll out of this service. Pennsylvania is one of eight states, plus the District of Columbia, where this option is initially available. Throughout 2016, the agency will continue to expand the service option to other states and plans to offer this to half of the nation’s population by the end of the year. This service will mean shorter wait times for the public in the more than 1,200 Social Security offices across the country and allows staff more time to work with customers who have extensive service needs. U.S. citizens age 18 or older and who are residents of Pennsylvania can obtain a replacement SSN card online by creating a my Social Security account. Bax 2835 Harrisburg, PA 17105 www.pacatholic.org The Pennsylvania Catholic Conference is the public affairs arm of Pennsylvania’s Catholic bishops and the Catholic dioceses of Pennsylvania. The conference wants Catholics statewide to be informed of several important issues that affect everyone in Pennsylvania. Through its Catholic Advocacy Network, residents can exercise their voices and rights as citizens concerning health care, education, human life and dignity, marriage and the family, religious liberty and social justice.

One way to get involved is by making your views known to media and your elected officials. Media attention is critical to raising the influence of the Catholic perspective on public policy issues. Concerned citizens can write letters to the editor, submit op-ed pieces, or invite coverage for your Catholic advocacy events and programs. Newspapers to contact are listed on the PCC website under the “Resources” section. If you do not see yours, check the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association for others. You can use PCC’s online tool to compose an e-mail letter to the editor for the newspaper closest to your address.

You can also send an e-mail message to your state legislators or get your legislators’ contact information so you can visit their offices, call, fax or write a letter. Returning users, log in using your e-mail and zip code to see the list of your elected officials. New users, fill in your name, street address and e-mail address to see your list of elected officials. Those who sign up to join the network will receive alerts on topics such as organ donation, adoption, end-of-life care, standing up for life, social justice and religious liberty. Sign up for the PCC’s Catholic Advocacy Network today.

Ask the Expert IS A HEARING IMPLANT RIGHT FOR ME?

Straining to hear each day, even when using powerful hearing aids? More people than ever before are turning to hearing implants to help them hear again and reconnect to the life they love. In fact, hundreds of thousands of people worldwide have found hope beyond hearing aids and are now enjoying the sounds they’ve been missing with an implantable hearing solution. You may be asking yourself: “What are hearing implants and will they work for me?” While these answers lie in the hands of a qualified Hearing Implant Specialist, there are some telltale signs that may mean a hearing implant is right for you. Get to know the facts. It’s the first step to better hearing. Q: Is a hearing implant right for me? A: If you have tried hearing aid after hearing aid and nothing seems to work, it may mean a hearing implant is right for you. Other signs may include having difficulty hearing in noisy environments (such as restaurants) or on the phone. Be sure to discuss these signs with a Hearing Implant Specialist in your area. Hearing aids are typically worn before implantable solutions are considered. Q: How are hearing implants different than hearing aids? A: While hearing aids only amplify sounds, hearing implants help make them louder and clearer. Improving the clarity of your hearing may help you better understand speech in both quiet and noisy situations.

David C. Kelsall, M.D., Cochlear Medical Advisor Dr. David C. Kelsall, a hearing implant surgeon and medical advisor to Cochlear, the world leader in hearing implants, answers common questions about hearing implants.

Q: What kinds of hearing implants are there? A: There are hearing implant solutions for many types of hearing loss. They include cochlear implants, Hybrid™ Hearing and bone conduction implants. Visit your Hearing Implant Specialist to determine which one may be right for you. Q: Does Medicare cover hearing implants? A: Yes, hearing implants may be covered by Medicare and most private insurance.* Q: Do hearing implants require surgery? A: Yes, surgery is required. However, in most cases it is a short, outpatient procedure. Q: Am I too old to get a cochlear implant? A: No, it’s never too late to begin your journey to better hearing.

Call 1 877 804 4000 to find a Hearing Implant Specialist near you.

Visit Cochlear.com/PGH to take an online hearing quiz. *Contact your insurance company or local Hearing Implant Specialist to determine your eligibility for coverage.

Pittsburgh va regional office (varo) Pittsburgh Regional Office 1000 Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15222 Telephone: 800-827-1000 The Pittsburgh VA Regional Office (VARO) is located in the William S. Moorhead Federal Building in Downtown Pittsburgh. The regional office provides veterans benefits to over 500,000 veterans and dependents in 27 counties of western Pennsylvania and four counties in the panhandle of northern West Virginia. The 130 employees of the regional office are responsible for the administration of

compensation and pension (C&P), and vocational rehabilitation and employment (VR&E) benefits throughout the area, as well as providing information and guidance on numerous other veterans programs. The VARO staff conducts extensive outreach in the community. A field person provides full-time service at the Erie VA Medical Center. In addition, a full-time field person is dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless veterans. Western Pennsylvania has one of the highest percentages of veterans in population in the United States. Additionally,

the average age of veterans located within the VARO jurisdiction is somewhat higher than the national average. Working with great support and cooperation in the community, this office continues to strive to meet the special needs of our veteran population. Representatives of nine veterans service organizations also share space with the regional office, working in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide information, assistance, and professional support to the veterans and their families served.

VA and LeanIn.org partnership seeks to empower women veterans WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs’ Center for Women Veterans recently announced a partnership with LeanIn.Org, the nonprofit organization founded by Facebook chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, to empower women to achieve their ambitions. Building on the successful launch of LeanIn.Org circles within the Department of Defense, VA is following the same model to increase support to women veterans. The VA initiative is called the LeanIn. org Women Veterans’ chapter. The Women Veterans Chapter comprises two distinct pilot programs: the Veteran-to-Veteran program, a virtual program, which allows any woman veteran to participate, no matter where she is located; meetings will be moderated and attended by women veterans throughout the U.S. The second is a face-to-face pilot circle. The face-to-face program is created in partnership with the existing LeanIn.Org chapter in Seattle, Washington. This circle is an innovative hybrid of women veterans and non-military members providing an environment for both to learn and share leadership skills. “We are thrilled to have LeanIn.org as our collaborative partner,” said Kayla Williams,

20 Pittsburgh Catholic

director of VA’s Center for Women Veterans. “For many years, women veterans have expressed to us that they need to have a mechanism to engage with their fellow women veterans to make a difference in their community and we believe this is the perfect match. VA is pleased to be a part of these two pilot programs.”

Advance directives: An important conversation to have while you’re able By SISTER DIANE MATJE, BILL CONNOLLY AND MATTHEW COTTER For most people, death is an uncomfortable topic. Yet, it may be one of the most important conversations we’re not having with our families and health care providers. Few can predict or control when the day will come; however, we can prepare ourselves and others in advance to allow for death with dignity. By talking about our intentions, we reduce the need for loved ones to make difficult decisions in an already stressful, emotional time. Having these important conversations now can provide guidance, reassurance, and comfort to those we love while they grieve their loss. Consider the wife, mother, and grandmother whose health rapidly declined a few days following surgery to remove a malignant mass from her abdomen. The health care team placed her on a ventilator to help her breath and inserted a feeding tube to ensure adequate nutrition and enhance administration of important medications to prevent lung and kidney failure. Family members visited frequently. The health care team kept the family informed about their loved one’s condition. They explained to the family that the treatments themselves were taking a toll on the individual and perhaps were causing more pain and suffering. The family had a difficult time accepting that there was little chance of improvement. The palliative care team — consisting of a registered nurse, a chaplain, a care manager, and a licensed social worker — also held ongoing meetings with the family. When asked if there was an advanced directive, a tool to help communicate requests regarding future medical care, the husband said they didn’t discuss such things. When asked what his wife would want for herself if she could speak, the husband couldn’t answer. A few days later, the woman’s granddaughter visited. After seeing how uncomfortable her grandmother looked, the young woman asked her grandmother if she wanted to stop medical treatment and simply be kept comfortable. Unable to speak, her grandmother nodded in agreement.

Pittsburgh Mercy Family Health Center community care manager Matthew Cotter assists Charmette Young, 59, of Pittsburgh's South Side with creating an advance directive. The family engaged in a very emotional embrace and asked the grandmother again if she wanted to stop medical treatment. She again responded by shaking her head yes. The chaplain was notified and remained with the family as they said their good-byes. The family matriarch died peacefully surrounded by her family. Situations like this are not uncommon. One step you can take to ensure your wishes are being followed is to complete an advanced directive, a legal document that allows you to specify your wishes and appoint a designated health care agent, a person you choose to speak for you when you’re no longer able to speak for yourself. An advance directive allows you to define what life-supportive treatment means to you and to specify what’s important to you. If you’ve lived your entire life in the community, you may prefer to spend your remaining time at home. Those days can be made more comfortable with support from hospice. There are many free resources you can use to create an advance directive. Ask your health care provider for examples or search online. You can also talk to a legal representative whom you trust for assistance. Upon completion of your advance directive, sign and date the document. Have your signature witnessed by two

other adults. It’s important that you give a completed copy of your advance directive to your primary care provider, your designated health care agent, and any specialists who are involved in your care. Keep the original document in a safe place. Ask your health care provider to make your advance directive part of your permanent electronic health record. Pittsburgh Mercy empowers people to have this important conversation with their loved ones and caregivers. “We strive to provide exceptional care at every phase of a person’s life journey,” said Terry Carik, experience of care director at Pittsburgh Mercy. “We believe the best care is delivered by listening with understanding to the person’s wishes. We work to honor and advocate for their decisions.” Having the conversation about your wishes now — long before it’s necessary — shows compassion, and ensures reverence and dignity for the individual today as well as at the end of life.

This story was co-authored by Sister Diane Matje, RSM, RN, MSN, a Sister of Mercy, registered nurse, and palliative care consultant at Pittsburgh Mercy. Bill Connolly, mission director at Pittsburgh Mercy, and Matthew Cotter, community care manager at Pittsburgh Mercy Family Health Center.

You may be asking yourself: “What are hearing implants and will they work for me?” While these answers lie in the hands of a qualified Hearing Implant Specialist, there are some telltale signs that may mean a hearing implant is right for you. Get to know the facts. It’s the first step to better hearing.

A: While hearing aids only amplify sounds, hearing implants help make them louder and clearer. Improving the clarity of your hearing may help you better understand speech in both quiet and noisy situations. Q: What kinds of hearing implants are there? A: There are hearing implant solutions for many types of hearing loss. They include cochlear implants, Hybrid™ Hearing and bone conduction implants. Visit your Hearing Implant Specialist to determine which one may be right for you.

David C. Kelsall, M.D., Cochlear Medical Advisor

Dr. David C. Kelsall, a hearing implant surgeon and medical advisor to Cochlear, the world leader in hearing implants, answers common questions about hearing implants.
