ottom Barn Farm announces that their heifers start calving on 1 June, thereby bringing in the start to the month in fine fashion. The Tilleys return from their Caribbean sailing trip on 26 May, so let’s hope there are no early arrivals! Mark reported verbally that he had successfully completed the sheep shearing, apart from the odd minor injury, before they went away. Meanwhile apple blossom abounds throughout the orchards.

Two novel ideas for the Parish are announced here this month, with the Parish Council reporting that it has adopted the redundant Telephone Kiosk in Pitcombe and St Leonard’s Church proposing to create a lending/exchange book library located on the porch of the church.The Council welcomes ideas for the kiosk’s use.

So far, a Newspaper and Magazine Exchange and an “Exchange and Mart” facility have been mooted.The Church’s plan is to initially call for contributions from those prepared to part with books, in order to ‘seed’ the library. Read more about these initiatives within.

Further Council news included a plan by the owner of the disused slurry lagoon on Pitcombe Hill to infill and restore the site to grazing land. Hooray!

Elsewhere, Somerset Waste Partnership documents the existing and planned new arrangements for the recycling of plastics, which provides a useful guide to what can and can’t be recycled now and in future.

Finally, it’s not too late to start getting excited about our Summer Fayre on 16 June.

Its success will be dependent on your support, so roll up and enjoy the day.

The Christian Lion One day, Bill was hunting in the woods.

It had been a slow day and he had yet to shoot any game. Suddenly, he heard a noise behind him. He whirled around and saw a ferocious mountain lion only six metres away.

Bill quickly raised his rifle to his shoulder, took aim and pulled the trigger.

Click.

The rifle didn’t fire.

Click…click…click.

Again, nothing. The gun was malfunctioning. By this time, the mountain lion had started toward Bill. In desperation, he threw down his rifle and ran.

Faster and faster he ran, with the mountain lion chasing him. The faster Bill ran, the more the mountain lion gained on him.

Finally, Bill came to the edge of a cliff. There was nowhere to go, so he dropped to his knees and began to pray.

“Oh Lord, I pray that this mountain lion is a Christian!”

As Bill looked up, he was surprised to see the mountain lion kneeling just a few feet away, praying, “Dear Lord, I pray that you’ll bless this food that I’m about to partake to the nourishment of my body….”

Cole Manor Tea Rooms It is always tricky writing this at least two weeks in advance but by the time you read it we will have (hopefully) survived the two Bank Holidays that come with May, had our spirits raised by the Royal Wedding and seen the numbers coming to Cole increasing virtually every day – especially on those gloriously sunny days that do all our hearts and souls so much good.

Needless to say the garden is coming to the point in the year when it looks at its most wonderful.

Hooray for Dianne, Neil and Terry who keep it looking so perfect.

Our opening hours remain the same: Tuesday – Sunday 10.00am – 5.00pm.

MIRACULUM CHILDREN’S CHOIR (HUNGARY)

his is the sister choir of the Aurin Girls’ who amazed us by their performances in 2016 and 2017. From the Kodály Music School, Kecskemét, Hungary this girls’ choir will be giving a concert on Saturday 30 June at 7.30pm at St Mary’s Church, Bruton.

This is part of their 2018 concert tour, so please put the date in your diaries!

One of the top young choirs in the world today, under their energetic conductor, László Durányik, they have won many first prizes in International

competitions. The choir performed in the Madonna Evita film in 1996.

Tickets are now on sale for what promises to be a stunning evening of choral singing, including sacred and secular music, Hungarian folk arrangements, spirituals and light pieces. Michelle obviously really loves her plants and she really entertained us with funny stories about her flower arranging exploits.

n April we had a talk on climbing plants with gorgeous illustrations, such as close-ups of unusual passion flowers. There was much interest in the plants brought for sale.

We visited Minterne Gardens on a damp windy afternoon. The landscaped gardens with bluebell lined paths meandered gently downwards towards the river, ponds and waterfalls where there was an area of pillar ferns. A mixture of rhododendrons dating from between the 1900s and 1938 could be seen in different stages of bloom, and there had obviously been a wonderful display of daffodils on the entrance drive that were now almost over. After our walk around the lake we went back to the house and were shown into a big reception room, hung with tapestries, for coffee, tea and cake.

In May the Society’s Chairman and the Society’s Treasurer got married.

Joining the Society is known to be a Good Thing, and it certainly was for us.

On 7 June we plan a visit to Cranborne Manor House with its vegetable garden, orchard, cottage garden, vistas and magnolias. The visit is timed to

see their notable display of roses.

On 20 June we are going to Jekka’s herbarium. Jekka will also give us a talk with guidance about herbs for all sorts of places as well as those for culinary or for medicinal purposes. Jekka has built up the largest collection of culinary herbs in the UK (300) and has a broad knowledge about the history of herbs. There will be opportunities for questions and we will finish with refreshments (tea, herb teas, coffee and homemade cakes).

Our autumn & spring talks are in Bruton Community Hall on Mondays at 7.30pm, where you would be very welcome. Come to a few meetings, then if you’d like to become a member, the £6 sub will ensure you get our newsletter with our programme, and other benefits such as discounted seeds.

Details of our summer visits are on our website. You are welcome to come on visits but booking is essential as they often include refreshments.

BOTTOM BARN FARM

I

t has been a dire winter which seemed to go on and on. It’s been wet and cold and just as we thought the weather was improving, we got blasted with snow and had two foot snow drifts in the lambing shed. As a family, we have struggled to keep positive and look forward like true Brits, which was partly the reason I didn’t write something for the newsletter last time. I just couldn’t find positive things to write about. It didn’t feel like the trees would ever blossom again, or we’d be able to go outside without Wellingtons, layers of jumpers and coats, or wading through mud.

Mark and I have abandoned Bottom Barn Farm for the Caribbean for two weeks to move Talulah Ruby from St Lucia to Grenada. Hopefully, keeping her safe from the inevitable hurricanes and make the insurance company happy. It seems a real shame to leave at our favourite time of year, when the orchards are in full bloom, but we have left the farm in the capable hands of trusted family and friends. We are keeping our fingers crossed that there will be no surprises, for example early calves. The heifers are due to start calving on 1 June and we get back home on 26 May. However, our track record was a little tainted a few years ago by some unexpected lambs when we went to Australia, having left my dad in charge.

We did a lot of pruning this year during January and February, particularly hitting the Stembridge Clusters hard. They have been a problem for quite a while, suffering from blossom wilt. This is a fungal infection that causes the flowers to shrivel and die. It has been spreading progressively to other varieties, so in order to try to restrict its impact, these trees have had a lot of the old wood cut off. There are still piles of pruning to burn as they just haven’t dried out sufficiently.

You might have noticed, the grey barn, our lambing shed has been demolished.

It was quite thrilling watching the process. I wanted to bash it down myself, but Mark sensibly insisted on getting a professional company to do the demolition safely. The roof was very low-grade asbestos, but still needed to be discarded properly in a container.We have also gained an enormous pile of crushed stone for improving tracks around the farm, which is a bonus. The view from the house is now of green fields and orchards, whereas before the demolition, it was looking into the bowels of the barn. It’s also great for watching sheep, and Major, the bull and his boys.

Suddenly the weather has improved, even getting too hot for the sheep, who were panting and desperate for water, so they’ve been shorn. For Mark shearing is an emotional milestone in the farming year with his childhood memories of two days of intensive shearing (1200 sheep). Ours should only take 2 hours providing they don’t escape from the corral, like they did this year as they ate their way through the hedge three times.

How unreal was to be in the Hotel Marriott at London Gatwick airport writing the article for the PN, and a day later to be sat on the boat in Rodney Bay St Lucia using the WiFi to send this story to you. What an amazing world we now live in.

THE HAPPY COOKER

STRAWBERRY CORDIAL This recipe will make 1.3 litres.

INGREDIENTS • •

1 kg strawberries, hulled and roughly chopped 1 kg granulated sugar •

can be adjusted to suit taste 600 ml red wine vinegar

METHOD 1. Put strawberries and sugar into a large bowl and stir to combine. Leave to macerate in the fridge for 3 days, stirring every 12 hours. The fruit will shrivel as the sugar draws out their juices.

2. Pour the fruit and juices into a large pan and stir in the red wine vinegar. Heat gently until sugar is dissolved, then bring to the boil for one minute. leave to stand for 10 minutes, then skim away any scum that has risen to the surface.

3. While still hot, strain the mixture through muslin, discard the fruit and decant the liquid into sterilised bottles and seal. Dilute with sparkling water or soda water or champagne for a special occasion.

The new car park has meant much more room to expand into, with the consequence that a wider variety of stalls, games and fun events will be on offer. The ‘Once Loved Clothes’ stand is attracting some fashionable items, but could still use more. ur meeting this month included our Annual Parish Meeting during which I reported on the work of the council during the past year. The full text of my report can be viewed on our website: pitcombepc.org.uk. No motions for discussion had been received from the Parish so we continued with our normal Parish Council meeting and I was elected as Chair for the final year of the current 4 year term.

An agricultural notice had been received to erect a cattle feed and machinery storage barn on land east of Ridge Lane. Council agreed to submit objections to this proposal as it was contrary to previous information provided by the applicant. We were also concerned that a previously approved, nearby barn was now being equipped by the applicant with utilities to allow its use as a milking parlour in contravention of the planning condition. We agreed to send a letter in support of local residents who had raised objection to this unauthorised development.

We were pleased to note that the appeal against the refusal of Planning Permission for a new build on land Next meeting: in Mill Lane had been dismissed.

ALL RECYCLING SITES TAKE PLASTIC FOOD POTS, TUBS AND TRAYS

he biggest change to plastics recycling in Somerset in almost a decade is underway at the county’s 16 recycling sites.

Residents who do not already regularly use recycling sites are reminded that they are all far less busy early on weekdays, while 11 sites stay open to 7.00pm on late-night Mondays. They must also exclude: • Thin plastics, such as cling film, carrier bags, black sacks, or bubble wrap.

• Plastic plant or paint pots, with or without any contents.

• Other plastics, such as plastic toys, CD cases, garden furniture or car parts.

From 2020, it is planned to roll out in phases the new “Recycle More” weekly kerbside collections in a new fleet of recycling vehicles, which will take all the extra bulky but light plastics. There will also be threeweekly collections of the far emptier refuse bins.

And 2020 will also see the end of landfilling rubbish in Somerset.

Rubbish will be taken to a resource recovery centre in Avonmouth to generate electricity.

A PORTUGUESE EXPERIENCE!

n Friday 13 April the Wine Club met for an enjoyable evening learning about the wines of Portugal presented by John Knight. Before the wine tasting began the club celebrated the 90th Birthday of our Life President Ken Chamberlain. John then gave us a brief insight into the lengthy relationship between Britain and Portugal…a military alliance founded on the trade in alcoholic beverages.

Hurrah! A strategic alliance worthy of Gilbert and Sullivan. John presented the following wines: The whites:

1) Quinta de Azevedo - Grape: Loureiro Pederna / ABV 11% Available at Waitrose or Majestic £6.95/£6.99 Literally ‘green wine’ from the Minho region of Northern Portugal.

Historically fermented in open stone lagares before being run off into cask and undergoing malolactic fermentation. Fermentation now occurs in vat, retaining the classic spritz or CO2 bubble in the wine.

Complex aromas of white and tropical fruits, citrus and white flowers. A lively and stimulating wine, with good acidity and well balanced, hints of spritz and bubble, with a concentrated and fresh finish. At its best now, as a partner to Page 22

seafood, green salads and pasta.

2) Alvarinho - Grape: Albarino / ABV 12.5% - Available at Wine Society £12.50 A mouthwatering white from Minho’s leading light, Anselmo Mendes. The more floral aromas of the alvarinho grape (known as albariño in Spain) are displayed beautifully in this finely crafted white, which is pristine and long on the palate. An exciting testament not only to the quality of the region, but also alvarinho’s Portuguese prowess, this grown-up Vinho Verde deserves attention.

3) Douro Superior - Grapes:Verdelho & Viosinho / ABV 14% - Available at Great Western Wines £13.95 How do you make a white Burgundy lookalike out of obscure Portuguese grapes in the place most famous for Port wine? We have absolutely no idea, but through some strange alchemy, Crasto have done exactly this. This is a seriously sumptuous bottle, and we highly recommend it.

A fragrant and well-balanced blend of Port grapes (touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz and tinto cão) from the beautiful Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo estate. Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, to give the estate its full name, dates back to 1764 and its historic winery is still used today. Situated along the banks of the Douro River near the villages of Ferrão and Pinhão the estate boasts 120 hectares of prime demarcated land and was one of the first to embrace oenotourism.

The secret lies in the location of the vineyard, where the Serra d’Estrela’s higher altitude (400600 m) results in 20 days longer hang times for the grapes which is great for tannin ripeness with more acidity and freshness, giving the wines a unique sense of place.

A LIBRARY FOR THE PARISH

henever and wherever library services are reduced, there is sadness which suggests that people value the opportunity to borrow books (and often records, DVDs and videos). The porch at St Leonard’s offers an opportunity to address this issue so, from 1 June, it is proposed to set up a lending/exchanging library just for books in the first instance.

Many of us have books that we have enjoyed but don’t necessarily want to read again and some of us probably have review copies of books that might interest others. The plan is to ‘seed’ the library and to that end you might be prepared to contribute some books that you think would appeal to a local audience.

TEA PARTIES – CAN YOU HELP US?

ant to start the week feeling good about yourself after having helped at a local “Contact the Elderly” tea party?

Bruton Surgery’s health coaches are making plans for these Sunday afternoon events in this area and need more volunteers to make it happen.

This is an opportunity for them to socialise and enjoy some tea and cake.

If you would like to host a tea party no more than twice a year, or could be a volunteer driver to bring people to the tea parties, please contact Helen Saunders, Health Coach at Bruton Surgery on 01749 812310.
