PITCOMBE NEWS September’s flower of the month is the Aster, a symbol of powerful love. Now you know.

It’s a busy month for Pitcombe and the surrounds, with a host of events advertised in this issue. They include ‘Willie’s Ride’ on 8 September, when Willie Constantine, for the 20th consecutive year, rides in a tour of 32 Somerset churches, raising money for St Leonard’s. See inside how to donate to this heroic effort. Also on 8 September is the Yarlington Fair, held at Yarlington House, with its usual wide range of colourful and entertaining events. The following day is the first ever Dahlia Day at Gants Mill, where 100 varieties of Dahlias will be on display – quite a show. And on 16 September the Bruton Choral Society performs the Messiah, along with four other choirs at St Mary’s, Bruton.

The highlight of the month will be the Harvest Service, followed by the Harvest Lunch, on 30 September. Read all about this change to the traditional format in the Village Hall News and on the poster on the back cover.

Further away, in October, there are notices of the PCC organising an afternoon’s visit to Wells Cathedral and a light-hearted folk and country music concert to be held at St Leonard’s Church.

Elsewhere, Cole Manor Tea Rooms (read Diana) in a departure from their normal news, presents a remarkable tribute to the New Wine Christian Festival, held each year at the Bath and West Showgrounds. It really is a wonderful piece and worthy of archiving, particularly as, after 30 years, the festival will be moving from here to Peterborough.

Congratulations to Sue Smith who won the annual Hadspen Short Mat Bowls Singles Championship for 2018. The competition was tough, as can be observed by the description of the quarters and semis matches, leading up the final.

The Parson’s Pulpit I think the oldest person I’ve baptised was 60 (and it was his birthday). Having had a near-death experience, he was keen to sign up! Sadly, relatively few who miss out on baptism (or for that matter, confirmation) when young, choose to ‘take the plunge’ in later life.

In every church in which I’ve ministered there have been regular attenders, who were neither baptised nor confirmed and showed no inclination to be so. This may seem strange, but for various reasons they preferred simply to accept the status quo.

It seems to me that circumstances robbed them of something that might have been theirs, almost one might say, their birth right: to be a member of the Church of this land without a great song and dance once adult. For some Christians such a diffident attitude may seem wrong; but I think I understand it. It does reflect where many people find themselves today, in matters of faith.

So, I find it deeply regrettable that parents are choosing not to christen their infants. It means effectively that, within two generations, there is no connection.

The family has opted out. The reason they give may sound like a fair one – to let the child decide when he or she is ready. But given that religion is ‘caught not taught’ – where are they likely to experience the living ‘language game’ of Christianity?

Everyday people do discover the Church – and the Christian faith.They fall into it, almost accidentally. But if I were a parent over again, would I think, ‘hands off!’

I must let my child find out for herself, when the time is ripe, what is important?

Love of the great outdoors? Music? Books? Sport? Family? And, oh yes, the thirst for God? Really?

No! Every time I perform a baptism, or a church wedding, I see something vital happening. I see connections being made. Between persons, families. Between past, present and future. Between biology and spirit. Between individual story and communal identity. Let’s not leave future generations without this ability to connect, to root their stories, and to see the big picture.

Cole Manor Tea Rooms New Wine, the Christian family festival that has taken place on the Bath and West Showground for the past thirty years, is moving to Peterborough.

This really does feel like the end of an era for us as we have met and had to stay some of the most extraordinary people we are ever likely to meet this side of Heaven. They have come from all backgrounds, all parts of the world and all with amazing and humbling stories to tell.

These people have ranged from a remarkable man from Burkina Faso who after years of hardship that would be impossible for us to imagine, arrived in Canada where he now lives and runs a large church. Jackie Pullinger, who has given her life to working amongst drug addicts in the poorest parts of Hong Kong. Brother Andrew, who many years ago started smuggling Bibles behind the Iron Curtain and who went to the places where Christians were being persecuted and often executed for their faith. He started an organisation called Open Doors which continues to work, often underground, to support our Christian brothers and sisters who stand firm in their faith in the most difficult and direst of circumstances.

Perhaps the last two weeks have given us the greatest contrast of all. We were asked several weeks ago if we would have the Archbishop of Canterbury and his wife, Caroline, to stay. Their names are in the Visitor’s Book so it must have been true! We then had the real honour (not that meeting the A of C wasn’t an honour!) of meeting and having to stay a lady called Hae Woo. Her story closes the New Wine chapter for us and what a story it is. She was born in North Korea in 1948. Her mother was a Christian but Hae Woo was sworn to keep that fact a secret. She witnessed the North Korean famine in the ‘90s when it is estimated over 3 million people died of starvation. She escaped to China but was arrested on her return. Her husband, who was also a Christian, was imprisoned and died in prison as the result of the torture he endured. She watched as her 26 year old daughter died of starvation. She was imprisoned and tortured in a concentration camp for 10 years. When released she set out on a great trek and eventually managed to reach South Korea. She is tiny. She is loving and kind. She is generous, caring and forgiving. She is a shining light of what it means to have a faith that really does go beyond anything we can ever think, hope, dream or imagine.

And even though New Wine may no longer be on our doorstep we know that we will be entertaining ‘angels unaware’ for many years to come and for that we are truly, truly thankful!

YARLINGTON FAIR SATURDAY 8 SEPTEMBER Count and Countess Charles de Salis will host the biennial Yarlington Fair in the beautiful grounds of Yarlington House (BA9 8DY) from 11.00am - 5.00pm. Yarlington Fair was first held more than 700 years ago and should not be missed. There will be teas, coffees and lunches, all featuring delicious home baking, an all-day bar and an ice cream parlour on wheels.

This year’s attractions will include circus skills, birds of prey, terrier

racing, steam tractor, bees, dog show, children’s art tent, live music, many stalls and games and of course the famous Yarlington Mile. A special treat will be two performances of “The Wife of Yarlington”, a colourful play by the Langport Mummers. A great day out for all the family!”

HADSPEN SHORT MAT BOWLS CLUB SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP 2018 Saturday 28 July saw the main internal Club competition of the year take place organised by Peter Wyatt.

Thirteen players took part this year and, following a draw, battled through 22 matches in order to determine who would play in the semi-final. Steve Wheadon played Sue Smith in the first semifinal and Nigel Wheadon played Carole Wyatt in the second with Sue and Nigel both winning their matches to take them through the final.

A wonderful match ensued with Sue eventually coming out on top this year winning the Singles Champion Trophy for the second time, the first occasion being in 2009. It is very pleasing that the trophy has seven different names engraved on the base since its inception in 2006.

I’m sure I can speak for all the players when I say we had an enjoyable days bowling.

ON CHESIL BEACH When this book, which describes the non-consummation of a marriage on the wedding night, was published by Ian McEwan in 2007, it was short-listed for the Booker prize and criticized for being too short with only five chapters and about 150 pages. The film made in 2017 by Dominic Cooke from screenplay by McEwan has been damned with faint praise but both works are profoundly moving and well worth reading and seeing.

Just as horticultural commentators divide the attitudes of gardeners to the present drought according to whether they were adult in 1976, so the understanding of the issues in Chesil Beach depend on whether you were adult in 1968. That was the year that the Abortion Act of 1967 took effect and the birth control pill became freely available in the UK (although it was made available for married women from 1961).The story set in 1962 brings into sharp focus the lack of sex education available and the taboo of unmarried sex with its danger of pregnancy which led many young brides to the marital bed unprepared and frankly terrified.

(superbly acted by Soairse Ronan) has been subjected to a sadist of a father (implied in the book and obvious in the film) and Edward (Billy Howle), her fiancé and husband, has a family dominated by the condition of his mother (Anne-Marie Duffy) brain damaged by an accident on a railway station. Their courtship is charmingly handled and the inevitability of the disaster of their first night is presaged

by Florence resisting Edward’s coy advance in the cinema. The nonconsummation of the marriage and the separation of the couple follows.

In the book, that’s pretty much the end but the film makes much more of Florence’s musical career and the end ties up the loose ends in 2007, making clear that she has had a successful career with children and grandchildren whereas Edward has been destroyed by his loss of her. It’s a salutary warning how to destroy a relationship by taking a ‘cold and righteous’ stand.

THE HAPPY COOKER

BLACKBERRY, LEMON AND ALMOND BARS This snack recipe marries beautiful blackberries and almonds in a scrumptious bar.

Makes 12 bars; 25 mins to make and 1 hour to cook plus chilling.

INGREDIENTS For the pastry base: • 175 g plain flour, plus extra for dusting • Pinch of salt • 50 g icing sugar • 100 g unsalted butter, chilled, cut into small pieces, plus extra for greasing • Finely grated zest of 1 lemon • 1 medium free-range egg yolk • 1.5 tsp lemon juice Page 10

For the topping: • 125 g unsalted butter, softened • 125 g golden caster sugar • Finely grated zest of 1 large lemon • 2 large free-range eggs, lightly beaten • 25 g self-raising flour • 175 g ground almonds • 150 g blackberry jam, homemade or shopbought • 200 g blackberries • 35 g flaked almonds

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C/160 °C fan/gas 4. For the pastry base, sift the flour, salt and icing sugar into a food processor.

Add the butter and lemon zest, then pulse briefly until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Transfer to a mixing bowl. Lightly beat the egg yolk with the lemon juice, then stir into the flour mix until it comes together in a ball.Turn out onto a lightly floured surface, then knead until smooth.

2. Grease and line a 21 cm x 30 cm shallow tin with baking paper. Roll out the pastry to a rectangle of the same size, then use to line the base of the tin. Prick all over with a fork, then chill in the fridge for 20 minutes.

3. Bake the pastry for 15 minutes until golden, then remove and set aside to cool slightly.

4. For the topping, put the butter, golden caster sugar and lemon zest into a mixing bowl, then cream together with an electric hand mixer until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs, then fold in the flour and ground almonds.

5. Spread the jam evenly over the pastry base, then carefully spread the almond mixture on top. Scatter over half the blackberries, then gently press them into the mixture.

Scatter over the remaining berries.

6. Bake for 10 minutes, then remove and swiftly scatter over the flaked almonds. Return to the oven as quickly as you can, then bake for a further 35 minutes until richly golden and an inserted skewer comes away clean. Leave to cool, then remove from the tin and slice into bars.

HOW SAFE IS YOUR WATER SUPPLY?

THE BEST WAY TO BE SURE YOUR SUPPLY IS FIT FOR USE IS TO HAVE REGULAR TESTING CARRIED OUT Having a private water supply can be a real boon. Cheaper than mains water, control over chemical additives and often with better pressure, a private supply is also not subject to imposed drought restrictions. Many farms, businesses and homes rely on a private supply either through preference or practicality.

Indeed, the South West has around one third of all the private supplies in England.

Cool, fresh and delicious - spring water on tap can be one of the perks of rural living.

The quality of private water supplies, however, can be extremely variable. It’s vital to ensure the safety of your supply for yourself, your guests, livestock or customers. In fact, it’s a legal requirement if you run a commercial activity where you supply water to your customers, such as a campsite, B&B or rental property. Owners can help safeguard their supplies by protecting from contamination by livestock and other hazards, installing treatment apparatus, and making sure the water is stored and distributed safely before use.

Private water supplies often pose a health risk because they are not managed or tested in the same way as public supplies.

Common problems include bacteria, heavy metals such as iron, manganese, aluminium, lead and arsenic, as well as nitrates, nitrites, ammonia and other minerals. Sometimes the contamination Page 12

may affect the appearance, taste or smell of the water but it is often not obvious.

The best way to be sure your supply is fit for use is to have regular testing carried out.

Professional testing should include metals such as iron, zinc, lead, nickel and copper that may result from deteriorating pipework or other sources.

It should also report on chemical levels from disinfection products. The key benefit of engaging a reputable professional laboratory is that they can provide microbiological testing which will identify health hazards such as E.coli.

Not all labs offer this service, so always check what is included when choosing a company. It is highly recommended that a laboratory accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is used rather than internet testing kits which are very unreliable and often give misleading results.

VILLAGE HALL THE HARVEST LUNCH

Hear ye! hear ye! The town cryer heralds a change in our traditional harvest celebrations.The Harvest Supper on a Monday evening has always been a fixture in everyone’s diary, following the Harvest Service on the Sunday. This year, the Village Hall and St Leonard’s are combining to conjure up the traditional service at 11.00am, followed, at 12.30pm, by a slap-up, celebratory lunch in the Village Hall. It was felt that a Sunday afternoon celebration would be a more suitable arrangement than the Monday evening event, from a timing point of view. It links the church service to the meal, encouraging church-goers to join the lunch and might even persuade the not-so-regular attendees to join in the service before repairing for some refreshment! It also allows for whole families to attend, being a weekend event during the day. Tickets for the lunch will be available in the normal way, with details shown in the poster on the back cover of this magazine. A discount is available for children under 12 and under 5s are free. Local beers and ciders will be on sale, along with the normal range of wines and soft drinks, with the first drink being free! A splendid feast, produced by the gifted and indefatigable team of local volunteers, will be laid before you, celebrating the bounty that nature has provided at this harvest time. Breaking with tradition, the auction of local produce donated to the church will be replaced by a raffle of hampers, made up of fruit and veg. and other delicacies.

The balance of the produce will be donated to food charities in the area. All of which makes for a marvellous day and it is sincerely hoped that as many of you as possible will be able to come and enjoy it.

A FACE-LIFT Painting and redecoration of the main hall area is taking place during August.

We apologise in advance for any disruptions to normal services and hopefully these will be kept to a minimum.The work is being undertaken to keep up with our ongoing maintenance programme and to have the Hall looking as fresh and as lovely as ever!

BRUTON CHORAL SOCIETY Just around the corner is the rescheduled Community Messiah on Sunday 16 September at 5.00pm in St Mary’s Church.

Even in this year of extreme weather, we are confident that nothing will get in the way of this uplifting occasion.

We will be joining four other local choirs in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.Tickets already bought will of course be honoured but can also be bought from Juliet Bowell on 01749 812422, Bruton Pharmacy, Church Bridge Stores or on the door for £5.

The group includes Alan Berry, who many of you will already know, and was formed about three years ago in the Bailey Hill bookshop in Castle Cary playing original folk music and today some more modern music and we look forward to welcoming them Page 18

VISIT TO WELLS CATHEDRAL THURSDAY 18 OCTOBER In response to a suggestion made at the Church AGM, the Parochial Church Council have organised an afternoon’s visit to our beautiful Cathedral at Wells. This will take place during the New Music Wells Festival which is a special week at the Cathedral and the programme will be as follows: 1.00pm to 1.50pm For those who are interested (prior to the guided tour) there is a Lunchtime Organ Recital in the Quire by Jeremy Cole who is performing organ music from 1970 to 2018 including works by Michael Berkeley CBE, Judith Bingham, Barnaby Martin and Tarik O’Regan.

(Admission is free with a retiring collection in aid of Wells Cathedral music.)

2.30pm Guided tour of the Cathedral kindly lead by Peter Coxon from Bruton who is a retired Cathedral Guide.

For those who wish to stay for Evensong at 5.15pm This will take place in the Quire and will include the first performance of a new choral piece by Diana Burrell.

The full Cathedral Choir comprising the Boy and Girl Choristers and Vicars Choral will be singing at this service which will conclude at approximately 6.00pm.

CASTLE CARY GARDENING ASSOCIATION We did not have a talk in August but did have our open to all Annual Show. This year it was astonishing at so many levels. The day itself was the promised 28 degrees and, remarkably, the flowers and the over 100 visitors didn’t wilt. It was our 70th. Not as impressive as Bruton’s 94th, but that both neighbouring clubs have been going so strong for so long is wonderful. The display and brochure to celebrate this historic landmark were very popular.

If any of the show vegetables have whetted your appetite for exhibiting next year, our 6 September speaker is Claire Hart with her talk on ‘How to Show vegetables’. This might seem perverse to organise this after the show but what we saw and did will still be fresh in our minds so we can plan for next year. We meet for 7.30pm on the first Thursday of the month in the school rooms beneath the Methodist church in North Street, Castle Cary. Non-members welcome for £1 to include tea and biscuits.

The growing season started with snow and temperatures well below zero for days on end. We then had rain and more rain followed by the hottest and driest summer since at least 1976!

So, this summer has been ‘difficult’ for plants and gardeners and the exhibits were expected to reflect this.

December 2008 saw a disastrous flood which caused over ÂŁ500k of damage in the villages of Pitcombe and Cole when 40 mm of rain fell onto frozen ground in the space of just 6 hours. Every year since then volunteers have come together to try to clear the river so that flood water can get away without causing damage. Saturday August 11th this year again saw a goodly band of volunteers set to with the invaluable help of local farmer Martin Jennings and his wife Celia. A feature of the day is the community lunch providing a welcome opportunity for villagers to spend time with their neighbours. The chances of a repeat flood seem to be increasing with the rise in global temperatures. The Somerset River Authority (SRA) are encouraging landowners upstream to build twig and brushwood dams to slow future flood water rushes.
