Welcome Hi all, December marks the end of another busy year in the world of Pirtek and as we all look forward to the festive season, it’s the perfect reflect on some of the great achievements in the business.

In 2012 Pirtek has continued to deliver fresh initiatives to its customers with a range of developments. Our embracement of new technologies is better servicing the customer. Things are looking fresh across the country with our franchisee network in the process of major upgrades to their service centres. This edition of Fluid showcases some of the recent activities that are being undertaken across the country.

Outgoing Parramatta Eels Captain Nathan Hindmarsh might have been lost to the NRL, but I’m pleased to say that he will still be highly visible in his new role as a Pirtek Ambassador. Nathan was a fantastic leader on the field and he will be a key member for us in continuing to build the Pirtek profile.

Speaking of legends, Pirtek sponsored a special event on the Gold Coast and one of Australia’s greatest sporting mysteries was solved. This special event is featured here in Fluid and without giving too much away, the event did ‘rock’!

In the community Pirtek continues to show leadership through it’s fundraising and awareness efforts for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. In this edition we announce the dates for the 2013 Pirtek Fishing Challenge and our goals of exceeding our 2012 result of $130,000. In addition to this the Pirtek network supports a whole range of community activities at a local level, all in the aim of supporting the regions in which we operate.

We are looking to continually improve our communication throughout the network and we see Fluid magazine as a part of that. While we have a focus on the Pirtek brand and business, we are also keen to make it as informative and entertaining as possible.

We look forward to your feedback on our new BBQ recipe section with Pirtek Ambassador and Olympian Dani Samuels, our “leaky hose” section looking at some of the weird and wonderful stuff online and Nathan Hindmarsh’s look at the world of Twitter.

Finally I’d like to wish all our customers and staff, along with the families a safe and Merry Christmas. Whether it’s having the kids wake you up before the crack of dawn to get into the gifts underneath the tree, or firing-up the barbeque with plenty of food and refreshments, I trust you all make the most of the festive season.

PIRTEK HELP SOLVE ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S GREAT SPORTING MYSTERIES

O

ne of the biggest mysteries in Australian sporting history was solved at the second annual Pirtek Legends Dinner on the Gold Coast.

With the help of Pirtek, Speedcafe.com tracked down the silent witness to the incident which destroyed Dick Johnson’s 1980 Bathurst 1000 race, that would be the beginnings of his high-profile career.

Retired NSW South Coast Public Servant, Steve Arnaudo, 63, came out to tell a first-hand account of how the rock rolled onto the track at Bathurst in 1980 and destroyed Johnson’s dreams.

He had kept what he saw secret for several decades but decided to break his silence after learning that the iconic Dick Johnson Racing team had fallen on hard times a couple of years ago.

His sworn testimony of the accounts of that day on top of Mount Panorama tell of a couple of young blokes who had unwittingly triggered one of the great mysteries of Australian sport.

In front of 200 guests at the Surfers Paradise Marriott Hotel Resort and Spa, Arnaurdan recalled what happened at The Cutting at Mount Panorama on October 5, 1980.

“We watched the start up on the mountain behind one of the star-picket fences and Dick was coming around flat out and I said to my wife Lorraine this guy has got no backing from any big companies. He’s doing it from his pocket own,” said Arnaudo.

“After a handful of laps these two people walked up in front of us and

they would have been in their early 20s, dressed in jeans and flannelette checked shirts and they were obviously very hungover.

“Then one car came past and was having some trouble and he wasn’t on the racing line and didn’t see the rock I wouldn’t have thought.

“They looked really crook. They had a big night and they decided to sit right in bloody front of us.

“By this stage you could hear the leaders coming up Mountain Straight. And then it all happened very quickly and all of a sudden wham, it was horrific.

“They had anywhere they could have sat.

50m either side of us there was nobody.

“One of the guys decided he wanted to have a sleep. So he fiddled around and found a rock to put under his head which would have been terribly uncomfortable and he was sliding down the hill a bit so he found another rock to put under his bum.

“And that is where it happened.

Suddenly this rock started to roll and as soon as it started to roll they bolted.

“I could see this rock going over the edge of a precipice there. And I thought holy shit and I got up and looked over to the track and it finished right on the racing line.

“I wanted to go and get that rock because there was no cars coming around but I thought no I don’t want to be a hero because I’ll get myself killed doing that.”

“There was no way of getting back up to where I was watching the race from.

There was a marshal over the other side of the track and I started waving to him but he was looking straight down the track.”

“There was a loudspeaker crackling away so he couldn’t hear me shouting.

“The whole thing to when these kids arrived to when the rock slid down and the car hit it was about one minute.

“When I contacted Dick I said look mate ‘I wish there was more drama to it. I wish there was a conspiracy but there wasn’t. It was just a stupid accident.

“I don’t think the boys were trying to do anything malicious. It was an accident and they got up and pissed off as quickly as they could. They don’t know Dick Johnson hit the bloody rock but they knew someone did.

“It’s one of the great stories of Australian sport. At the end of the day we make a lot of things out of these incidents and often it is not quite true but the reality is this is what happened.”

Well there you have it - it might not fit with the conspiracy theories of the Ford fans that day, but that’s how it happened!

Pirtek gets the Royal Treatment

P

irtek CEO Glenn Duncan was given the royal treatment when he joined an elite group of NRL sponsors who were invited to meet Prince Charles at a private function in Sydney during his tour of Australia.

“I was pleasantly surprised by how personable Prince Charles was,” Duncan said. “He appeared to be very open and honest and certainly made all of us feel very welcome.”

The future King of England heard first hand from students who have successfully completed the Learn Earn Legend school-to-work program.

Duncan was particularly moved after hearing about the positive impact the program is having. “It’s certainly life changing for those involved.

One young girl is well on her way to realising her dream of becoming a primary school teacher,” he said.

“Before she completed the program, she was unable to gain entry into university. Now she is preparing for her first day on campus with all the confidence in the world and is well on her way to achieving her goal.”

Prince Charles was so impressed with the students and the results the program is having that he took time out to thank Duncan and the other sponsors, reinforcing the importance of corporate responsibility. He highlighted how vital it is for companies like Pirtek to commit to community projects. “He told us twenty years ago, these types of initiatives were non-existent.”

Duncan added, “Prince Charles couldn’t stress how important it is to help kids to develop life skills to keep the cycle going.”

Bondi Beach to watch a game of touch football. A few indigenous all-stars were running a mentoring session with some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander school children.

Parramatta’s Willie Tonga got the chance to show Prince Charles a few moves along with fellow all-stars Greg Inglis, Brad Tighe and Greg Bird. Tonga said, “It was a fantastic opportunity. I was proud to be a part of the day and to represent the Eels.”

Tonga said he had a good chat to some of the students and came away feeling really excited for them.

“It’s good to know many of them are destined for a bright future.”

HINDMARSH JOINS THE PIRT

irtek Parramatta Eels legend Nathan Hindmarsh might have hung up his boots at the end of the 2012 season, but we are not allowing him to get away from the Pirtek family that easily.

Hindmarsh has accepted a position as a Pirtek Ambassador and will be playing an active role in many of the activation and marketing activities that the company has planned around its investment in the Eels and local communities.

One of the key regular activities that Hindmarsh will be involved in is his weekly team announcement and match

preview which will be presented in an audio and video format through the Pirtek Facebook page and website.

Hindmarsh will announce the team and then provide his analysis of what the fans can expect the following weekend.

“I obviously had an enjoyable career with the Eels and I am delighted that I can maintain my interest in the club and the game and my relationship with Pirtek, in particular, with this agreement,” said Hindmarsh.

“Pirtek have been loyal sponsors of the Parramatta Eels and really have all the traits that I tried to apply to my football

TEK TEAM career when it came to things like worth ethic and reliability.

“I look forward to some exciting times ahead off the field with Pirtek, its franchisee network and customers.

“We have some cool things planned and I am really looking forward to hitting the ground running in the New Year.”

2013 PIRTEK FISHING CHALLENGE DATE CONFIRMED

he date for the 2013 Pirtek Fishing Challenge has been confirmed as Sunday 24 March across Australia.

he aptly named Giant Trevally, “GT” for short, carries a name that exudes power, speed and endurance. Not unlike some of the world’s more elite sports cars the GT symbol is one that denotes something special, usually a thumping V8 engine or whistling turbo-charged V6.

Streamlined but aggressively powerful, the GT roams far and wide generally sticking to more tropical waters. A pack hunter, whose domain varies from coastal rivers and estuaries to outcrop islands and offshore coral reef. It is the latter environment, the clear cobalt waters of the Great Barrier Reef, which draws a regular contingent of specialist GT fishermen season after season to battle with this toughest of tough fish.

When the grander black marlin are aggregating in numbers off Cairns there’s still plenty of awesome pelagic action happening right along side. The outer reef fringes where long narrow sections line the Ribbon chain of reefs north of Cairns give way sharply to depths of the Pacific make for premium GT country.

The southern bound rich currents push hard along the edge bringing bait fish and in turn predators which hunt the eddies and up-wellings formed along the undersea cliffs of coral.

Rod technology has accelerated in the past 10 years a fierce pace lighter and more and more powerful has been the direction, with some unbelievably uncompromising sticks of high modular graphite on the market ready for battle.

The trade off is that the popper rod is almost half as long again as a stand up 37 kilo game outfit with the same amount of drag. So that word ergonomics, the ease and fishability of the utensil is crucial.

The night, which received international media interest, focused on Australian motorsport legend Dick Johnson and the story of his famous “rock incident” at Bathurst’s Mt Panorama in 1980.

the legends Johnson was the special guest on the evening, along with retired NSW South Coast Public Servant Steve Arnaudo who saw the whole incident happen and who told his story for the first time publicly (See separate story).

The night, put together by Speecafe. com, was also attended by current V8 Supercar star Greg Murphy, who was grilled over his own “Bathurst incident” with Pirtek Racing’s own Marcos Ambrose in 2005.

John French, who was Johnson’s co-driver in 1980, and again in 1981 when they won the race, and event race director, Ivan Stibbard, were also special guests.

Australia’s leading poet Rupert McCall, recited a couple of poems, including one dedicated to Johnson and his legendary racing career.

“Tonight has brought back so many memories for so many people and to meet Steve Arnaudo, for the first time was also pretty special.

It will be the first and last time that so many people integral to that famous incident will be in the same room together.

“I guess now we can really put to bed all the conspiracy theories about what happened on that day in 1980.”

Everyone who attended the dinner were also presented with a photo of themselves with Johnson and the famous “rock” which sits on display at his racing museum and shop at Yatala in Queensland.

“It really has been a fantastic night and we have to thank Pirtek for their wonderful support of events like these,” said Johnson.

MOVEMBER RAISING MONEY FOR PCFA The Pirtek-supported Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) is a beneficiary of the hirsute pursuit of growing a mo’ during November - otherwise known as Movember.

In 2011, $28.5 million was raised in Australia as part of a worldwide fundraising effort of $124 million (AUD), with all funds going to men’s health.

The 2012 Movember is the 10th year of the fundraising effort, which started with two mates challenging each other to grow a mo for a month in a Melbourne bar in 2003.

Now, it has spread internationally with 21 countries supporting men’s health initiatives from funds raised. Earlier this year, Movember was rated as one of the top 100 NGO (Non-Government Organisations) globally.

One area that PCFA has used the money received from Movember to add care specialist prostate care nurses to both metropolitan and regional health facilities. The overall goal is to provide in excess of 100 around Australia, said Chief Executive of PCFA, Dr. Anthony Lowe.

“Prostate cancer care adds to the load on hospital services, and the benefits of coordinated care have been well documented,” said Dr. Lowe. “It is now time to deliver an improved level of support and care to men affected by prostate cancer. Our vision over the next ten years is to have up to 120 specialist nurses helping to meet the demand for effective services to men living with prostate cancer.”

Operations Manager for Pirtek Geraldton Beau Bradford showed his support for the cause with an outstanding effort.

“Supporting Movember certainly turns people’s heads,” said Bradford. “It’s great to go to the effort with something that looks different and the good humour that people show you means that they know what it’s all about.

Health Tips PROSTATE HEALTH TIPS With the Aussie summer right here and the ‘silly season’ in full swing, it can be all too easy to lose track of your general health and put on a few extra kilos. If you aren’t keeping an eye on what you’re eating, it can also lead to damage to your prostate.

There’s no reason why you can’t enjoy all the trimmings of the season but also be prostate health aware - here’s a few tips that will help you out this summer. *Get a PSA blood test and digital rectal exam annually - begin this process at age 50. Men with a strong family history of prostate cancer or at high risk - should begin testing at age 45.

If prostate cancer has struck your family, inform your doctor. *Eat leafy and green vegetables - broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy and kale are good for prostate health. Add some raw vegetables into your salads or put some brussels sprouts on the barbie.. Green and leafy vegetables are good for your liver health as well. *Eat Selenium rich foods - They are good preventatives...and tasty: Seafood, shellfish, mushrooms, garlic, onions, seeds - like sunflower and sesame seeds and cashews are all rich in selenium. *Increase Zinc intake - Only 15 mg per day of zinc intake helps for proper and healthy prostate functionality. Excellent Zinc sources are pumpkin seed in shell, oysters, nuts and beans or you could buy zinc tablets from your health food store. A prostate danger from alcohol consumption is that alcohol neutralises zinc in your body. Zinc is also good for skin tone and helping to prevent common colds. It also increases your sperm count and sperm motility.

Stay Active - In addition to eating a healthy diet, you should stay active. Regular exercise pares down your risk of developing some deadly problems, including heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer. And although relatively few studies have directly assessed the impact of exercise on prostate health, those that have been done have concluded, for the most part, that exercise is beneficial.

irtek at Muswellbrook in the New South Wales Hunter Valley has once again thrown its full support behind the annual Global Village Motorfest & Fair.

A major fund raiser for the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) of Muswellbrook, the Global Village Motorfest & Fair is organised by the Upper Hunter Motoring Association Inc and has been supported by Pirtek for the past three years.

As part of activities Pirtek Muswellbrook not only had a major display, they also brought Parramatta

Eels stars Jarryd Hayne and Matthew Ryan, plus former rally champion and fishing expert Michael Guest along for the day.

“The Global Village Motorfest & Fair and supporting the PCYC is a great way for Pirtek Muswellbrook to give back to the local community,” said Pirtek Muswellbrook centre manager Gus Mather.

“Pirtek has great assets in the form of the Eels and Michael Guest, so having them along gives the event plenty of profile and helps in the fundraising process.

ichael Guest is a multiple rally champion, including a stint at the wheel of the Pirtek racing Ford Focus and Fiesta S2000. In 2012 took on a different kind of off-road competition in the new SideXSide Challenge as part of the Australian Rally Championship.

Also known as one of Australia’s leading fishing experts, ‘Guesty’ called old friend David Green back into the codriver’s seat aboard the Side by Side Can-Am Commander. Aimed at being an affordable way of going rallying, the SideXSide Challenge not only attracted Guest, but also old rival Cody Crocker who headed the Polaris challenge.

Quickly the ‘old firm’ were back at it over the gravel roads across Australia.

The Polaris of Crocker was a racebred machine, while Guest was at the

wheel of the standard farm vehicle in the Commander. Being the underdog is what Guest relishes and his moment came in Queensland when he scored victory.

“We were realistic in what we could achieve in the championship with a goal of scoring podiums,” said Guest.

“We ended up winning in Queensland and scored second in the final event of the season which really has us looking forward to 2013.”

What really has Guest licking his lips in 2013 is a new machine from Can-Am called the Maverick. This is no ‘Farmer Joe’ machine, like the Polaris this is the high performance sportscar version of a Side by Side machine.

“It’s a full-on sports machine that has more power, wider track and

suspension built for racing,” said Guest. “The fight is sure to be on in 2013 and we will be separated by split seconds, just like the old days!

Guest will be looking out for Crocker as well as a group of other drivers that have taken to the SideXSide Series.

“It’s been great to get back into the fight with Cody, but I also have been impressed with other younger guys who have chosen this category to get into the sport,” said Guest. “All in all it’s meant that I have had no opportunity to settle into the events as I have had to attack from the outset.

“For a person who was semi-retired from motor sport it has been full-on with the testing and competing. It has reignited my love for the sport and I can’t wait to tackle 2013 in the new machine.”

nterest has been strong for Pirtek’s 10th anniversary Ambrose NASCAR tour to Las Vegas in March.

The tour, which is being held to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Marcos Ambrose’s first V8 Supercar Championship in the Pirtek Falcon in 2003 has been organised exclusively for Pirtek franchisees, staff and customers.

Ambrose has become a star on the American NASCAR scene and has just re-signed a two-year deal with Petty

Motorsports, which is owned by the most successful driver in NASCAR history, Richard “The King” Petty.

“I have just been to Vegas to do the final arrangements and I can assure you we are in for one hell of a trip,” said Murray.

There are still several places left on the tour, which will depart on Thursday March 7, 2013 and return on Monday March 11 (arriving in Australia Wednesday, March 13). Cut-off date for final numbers will be the end of January.

“We will not only be seeing some of the most exciting racing that NASCAR has to offer, we will be doing it in one of the great playgrounds of the world.

The tour will be hosted by BAM Tours’ Brett “Crusher” Murray, who has had a long personal relationship with Pirtek and Ambrose.

When she isn’t competing, Dani loves enjoying good food with family and friends - but she always keeps an eye on what she consumes. Dani will provide some of her favourite seasonal recipes in each edition of FLUID that are designed for people on the move.

“There’s nothing like a barbecue in the middle of summer and nothing better in the Aussie heat than chargrilled lamb with an interesting and healthy salad on the side.

“You want to do it quick so you can kick back and relax with your family or friends, these recipes offer two easy and tasty alternatives when hosting a small group.

“Add in a nice cold beer or glass of Australian wine and its the perfect way to unwind with friends.”

Ingredients:

2 teaspoon cold pressed olive oil Cold Pressed 4 tablespoon lime juice Olive Oil 4 teaspoon cumin it’s better 8 lamb loin chops, visible fat trimmed for you

Preparation:

Preheat grill.

Blend oil, lime juice and cumin.

Brush both sides of each lamb chop with lime and cumin mixture.

Spray grill with olive oil spray.

Grill for 5-6 minutes each side.

Lamb is best served medium-rare - or a little pink on the inside, but it’s up to the individual Raw Vegetable Summer Salad

Vinaigrette

1/4 cup red wine vinegar 1 clove garlic, sliced 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup olive oil 1/4 a finely chopped, small red capsicum Additional salt and pepper, to taste

Salad

Yellow squash and zucchini, thinly sliced Red capsicum, thinly sliced Snow peas

Green beans Asparagus Rocket Baby Spinach leaves For the dressing, combine the red wine vinegar, garlic, Dijon, sugar, and salt in a blender, and puree until the garlic is minced. With the blender running, very slowly add the oil in a thin stream and blend until creamy.

Stir in chopped capsicum and season with additional salt and pepper.

For the salad, toss the squash, zucchini and remaining sliced capsicum in a desired amount of vinaigrette and leave to marinate for about 15 minutes.

Whilst marinating, arrange the greens. Once marinating is finished, pile the squash, zucchini and capsicum onto the greens and season with salt and pepper.

Use the asparagus spears for presentation. You can also grill the asparagus beforehand and place in the fridge for an hour to cool.

WINE:

Tamburlaine Hunter Valley Rose around $15/bottle RRP Rose has had a bit of a revolution in Australia over recent times. Made from red grapes but not left on the skins or housed in oak to develop the dark colour and tannins that are evident in a traditional red wine, a cold bottle of Rose is perfect for a summer barbecue.

A popular area on the Facebook page are the extended photo galleries. These galleries showcase such things as the shop upgrades, local sponsorships and even activities that surrounded the ‘Great Aussie BBQ’ event which raised plenty of money for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

Facebook is also the hub for the Pirtek Parramatta Eels updates including team announcement and even match highlights.

The Pirtek Athletic Allstars are in the media throughout the year and the Facebook provides a direct link to the goings-on with the young athletic stars across the country.

Through Pirtek’s partnership with www.speedcafe.com the Pirtek Poll is integrated into the Facebook page to allow visitors the opportunity to vote on the motor sports topic of the week.
