Rayelyn Smith, Serinity Bland, Averi Carlson Addy Hughes, Whitney McHugh, Addi McHugh, Katelyn Smith, Bralynn Johnson Rozlynn Want, Brylie Adamson & Talula SieboldFor our older alumni, the CHS Fight Song brings back fond memories. Raynelle Teeter remembers an active Pep Club where members all wore uniforms (blue wool pleated skirts and white shirts) and sat together at games. They would do all the cheers with the cheerleaders and sing the Fight Song after every touchdown, in the 60’s. The Cyril Historical Society helped us get some information through their Facebook page, that you can view at facebook.com/ cyrilokhistoricalsociety. Within 10 hours, had over 40 replies with info & memories of it. According to Sharon Scoggins & Wilma Hiner, the CHS Fight Song was written in 1949 by two students from the Class of 1954, Carl Mahan with help from Ronald Madison. Cyril’s music teacher, Mrs. Bates told her class that they needed to write a school song and so they did! Most of the kids from the 90’s and all the way to the HS kids now, aren’t even aware that Cyril has a Fight Song. Somehow it escaped our generation, other than the few people like Teri (Carlson) Williams & Tia (Schneberger) Martin who followed in their mom/aunt’s footsteps as Cheerleaders for CHS. Cheryl (Schneberger) Carlson, was so proud to be a Cyril Pirate and especially proud to be a Cheerleader and she made sure that her daughter & niece knew that Fight Song! Now, thanks to Mrs. Becky Thompson teaching her students every year, the Fight Song is one more tradition that the younger generation of Cyril Pirates won’t lose! When researching info on the Fight Song in 2017, Mrs. Gray asked the kids in her grade school classes if they knew what a fight song was and showed the lyrics on her screen. To her surprise, the entire 5th grade class started singing it and said Mrs. Thompson taught them. With the help of social media & an active Historical Society, hopefully this is one tradition will not be lost in the pages of history!
In June 1995, at the age of 72, Mildred “Billie” Ikard Bourgeois wrote her autobiography “What’s Next…memoirs of a 20th century woman” In it, she shares what life was like growing up in Cyril in the early 1900’s. In it, she talks about being a student at Cyril High School. I can’t verify any of these details but according to her, this is how Cyril became the Pirates!
“One must stretch the imagination to explain why kids in a little oil town on the Great Plains chose sea going thieves as a symbol. Let me confess that I influenced the choice. An avid reader, I was into the adventures of the main and fancied our ferocious will to win as much like the pirates in boarding a merchant ship and stealing the treasure aboard. Besides, that wicked man in a big black hat with a knife between his teeth did appear more threatening than any other logo in the athletic catalog. We felt we were more formidable than the usual mascot names like Bears, Tigers and Wolves.
Pirates we were!”
The first Cyril Pirate football team was started in 1955 & the final roster had 25 players. Coached by Head Coach, Paul Rhames, the Pirates ended with a 5-4 their first season.
Coach Trevor Knight is the 25th Cyril Football Head Coach.
Team record for most points scored was on October 24, 1958 when Cyril beat Ft. Sill Indian School 124-0.
The team record for most consecutive games won by the Cyril Pirates was 14, back in 1982.
When Cyril played Maysville October 2015, we set the Oklahoma HS Football record for most overtimes played in one game. The historic game with 7 overtimes lasted a little over 4 hours! The Cyril Pirates won that game 78-72.
The Cyril Pirates also held the previous record of 6 overtimes in one game, in Nov. 1998 when they lost to Garber 82-80.
Wendell Whitman coached longest for 13 years; Jerry Slawson coached 10 yrs. Jim Lucas & Steve Vetter both coached 5 yrs.
Mickey Mantle’s brother, Larry Mantle was head coach for the Cyril Pirates in 2005.
Wendell Whitman started Cyril’s Homecoming activities in 1956. This year will mark 67 years of our beloved tradition!

• This is Mr. Persinger’s 14th year to coach. The Lady Pirates softball team has been to the state tournament 13 of those 14 years!
• Crickett (Alexis Chrismon) remembers the Lady Pirates Slow Pitch team hitting 16 runs in one inning during a game in spring 2022.
• Julie “Moser” Poteete says that Cyril’s first softball team was in the fall of 1975 and they made it to state. There was only one class at that time so they had to play Putnam City West! Needless to say, they didn’t win but they did their best to represent! Donnie Meason was the coach that first year.
• Last year Jaycee Shaffer hit a homerun at Roff, over their big wall in centerfield and we don’t think it’s landed yet!
• There have been 12 All-State qualifiers.
• During the 2021 season, the Lady Pirates started out ranked 18th and finished #2 as State Runner-Ups! Their motto that year was “Nothing to Lose –something to PROVE!”
• State Runner-Ups in 2016 & 2021
This is either the 1st or 2nd Cyri Lady Pirates Softball team. This was the first team photo found in a CHS Yearbook from 1976. The 1st team was in the fall of 1975, but since it was at the end of the year and may have been too late to include in the 1975 yearbook, this could have been that team from the previous year. If so, this team was the one who went to state! Coach Donny Meason
