R-II performance report shows positive trends

“Trends are positive overall,” said Morgan County R-II District Superintendent Joyce Ryerson, Monday, Nov. 21, referring to the district’s most recent rating on the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s (DESE) Annual Performance Report (APR). “To be accredited, the district must score above 80 percent. Our goal is to stay above 90 percent,” Ryerson said. The district was at 91.8 percent in 2014 and is now at 92.5. The district’s board of education was presented the APR in their regular meeting Monday in Versailles. Of 140 total possible points in five categories on the Annual Performance Report, R-II earned 129.5. In academic achievement, R-II earned 55 of 56 possible points (98.2 percent). In subgroup achievements, R-II received 10 of 14 (71.4 percent). In college and career readiness, R-II earned 27 of 30 (90 percent). For attendance, R-II rated 7.5 of 10 (75 percent). Graduation rate points were 30 of 30 (100 percent). Also included in the report was the 11th-grade ACT testing

participation rate and composite score. Of the 11th-grade students, 96.6 percent took the ACT and achieved a composite score of 18.5. In 2015, 89.9 percent of 11th-grade students took the test for a composite of 18.6. Some drop in science and math performance was a concern for Ryerson, but she was encouraged by a generally stable and upward movement. While she said the district was a “rock star” as to graduation rate, attendance needs improvement. Candidate filing R-II board candidate filing deadlines for the April 2017 election were announced. There are three positions available for three-year terms and one position available for a one-year term. Candidate filing will open 8 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13. Filing will close 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21. It will then resume 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3. Final filing date is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17. Filing will not occur on days the school district is closed due to inclement weather. Bus bids The board approved assistant superintendant Steven Barnes

to solicit bids for the purchase of two 2017 or newer 71-passenger school buses. A letter and bid specifications will be sent to Midwest Transit Equipment of Nixa, Midwest Bus Sales of Bonner Springs, Kan., and Central States Bus Sales of Fenton. The deadline for submission of bids is noon, Friday, Dec. 16. Surplus Items Several items were added to the district’s surplus list including five projector screens, 12 boxes of books, 52 metal/plastic student chairs, 175 computers and monitors, one document camera, five printers, 13 televisions, 26 laptops and 10 projectors. Happy Thanksgiving from the folks at

by Janet Dabbs During the weekend of Saturday, Aug. 27, the 2016 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout powerboat races earned nearly $200,000 for local causes. Besides delivering exciting powerboat racing and an economic boost to the lake area, the Shootout raises money for local fire prevention districts and charities. Since the races moved to Captain Ron’s Bar and Grill at the 34.4 mile marker in Sunrise Beach, the event has broken fundraising records every year. The 2016 races were no exception. This year’s proceeds brought $200,000 to 34 organizations. By comparison, the 2015 races raised $175,000, and those in 2014 brought in $125,000. The fire districts use their earnings to purchase muchneeded safety and rescue equipment. The charities serve a variety of causes, including handicapped and abused children and adults, the homeless, the hungry and more. The organizations receiving donations supplied volunteers for Shootout events across a two-week period, including a golf tournament, a treasure hunt, a mini-shootout, a volleyball tournament, two poker runs, a Hall of Fame dinner, a meet and greet, a stereo shootout, and Make-A-Wish powerboat rides for handicapped children. Each volunteer “earned a certain amount per hour for their charity or fire district, depending on the scope of their duties. Duties included helping with parking, hospitality, vendors, safety boats and more. The fire district’s, for example, earned more because they provided more technical skills

Shootout news The next Lake of the Ozarks Shootout powerboat races are scheduled Saturday, Aug. 26 and Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017. The Shootout race course will be shortened from one mile to

3/4-mile in 2017. Based on input from racers, organizers decided the shorter course would be safer. A 40-mph start is expected to help boats gain enough speed to get up on plane before crossing the start line. Duggan said the shorter course is something being done at similar races for safety, and due to ever-increasing technology enabling boaters to travel at higher speeds. November 23, 1916 Last Saturday, Nov. 18, H. M. Baker, of Smithton, celebrated his 80th birthday, and on Sunday a number of his relatives joined him in commemoration of the day. Mr. Baker is the only uncle left out of many of the editors of the Statesman. He is our father’s oldest brother, the rest of the big family having gone to a better world. It was our pleasure to be with this splendid old saint last Sunday. Aside from the editor of the Statesman, only some of his immediate family were present. many of the relatives are scattered far and wide and could not be there. Alphonse Karr (1808-1890), a French journalist, novelist and sometimes satirical critic, wrote, “Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns; I am thankful that thorns have roses.” It’s very easy in this hyperconnected, upside-down, insideout world to get sucked into the habit of thorn-focused thinking. We grumble about the “thorny” stuff, instead of seeing the “roses” with which we are blessed. Beginning this Thanksgiving, let’s try to remember, Duckie, we are really quite lucky.

Library Bookworm

by Stacey Embry, Director, Morgan County Library Hey! Guess what? We are getting eBooks and more! Seriously, I am very excited about this! We will go live Thursday, Dec. 1 with OverDrive/Missouri Libraries 2 Go. We are proud to offer the best-selling and classic eBooks, digital audiobooks, and streaming video available 24/7 from the library’s digital collection. You can browse the collection, borrow with your library card, and enjoy on your computer, tablet, Smartphone or eReader. Many borrowed eBooks, audiobooks, and more can be enjoyed immediately in your web browser or can be downloaded to the free OverDrive app for mobile devices. Digital titles can also be enjoyed on tablets and eReader devices such as the iPad®, NOOK®, and Kindle®. No matter how you plan to enjoy, titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period. There are no late fees! This new service, powered by OverDrive, is free with your library card. To get started enjoying eBooks, audiobooks and more, visit our card catalog, https://morgancounty.biblionix. com/catalog. To the left side of

the page, you will find Electronic Resources. Choose OverDrive-Missouri Libraries to Go. When the OverDrive page opens, sign in, choose Morgan County Library, use your library card number and the same password you use for the catalog. Your password will be the phone number you have on record at the library. Feel free to call if you have any issues. We will have various how-to handouts for various devices available at the front desk. Once you have signed in, there will be a “Learn more here” area on the tool bar. How-to information will also be provided there. The instructions are basic and easy to follow. The library received a generous donation a couple of years ago to help fund this venture. We are so thankful for this gift and hope our patrons will share in our excitement about this new feature for our library. This has been in the works for the last few months, I wanted to keep it a secret and have it as a Christmas surprise for our patrons. So, surprise! Starting Thursday, Dec. 1, we will have our annual Christmas drawing. This year will be a little different. We have our usual books, but have added

a Kindle Fire as our grand prize! So don’t forget to come in and sign up. The drawing will be Thursday, Dec. 22. On a different note, we welcome a new face to the library. Jessica Adair started Tuesday, Nov. 15 and we are thrilled to have her. She has brought with her 12 years of library experience and we are excited to have her as part of our team. On a sad note, we are losing a longtime staff member. Susan Douglas, who has been with us for almost 15 years, has decided to pursue a new venture. We are sad to see her go, but wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors. Our library continues to change; 2016 has been a heck of a ride. However, with new programs, new features, and new faces, our number-one goal is still to serve our community. We hope the ride continues to be one filled with excitement and promise. For more information, visit the Morgan County Library, 600 N. Hunter, in Versailles, call 573378-5319; or see the library’s website at morgancountylibrary. org. Library hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday.

We are blessed people, just coming through the Veterans Day celebrations all across our land and here in our community. I am very sentimental when it comes to America, being a veteran myself in which I served one tour in Vietnam. But I have no war stories of my own. I served building roads. I have seen a few war movies that depict a very real account of what war is like. It is terrible to the say the least. When I saw what our men and women went through to preserve our freedom, tears filled my eyes, and we owe the greatest respect to all veterans, but especially those who suffered injury and even their lives. I appreciate the school assemblies that we were all invited to and treated with the utmost respect. America would not be

the nation it was, and is, without the foundation it was built upon: “One Nation under God” and “In God we trust.” God is the reason America is a great nation. No people could have done what we, as a nation, have done by human strength and ability. Many times God has stepped in, and with his miracleworking power, changed the course of history to our advantage. We have just entered into a new page in American history. Many things have changed. I challenge every American who knows how to pray, to continue to do so. It is not time to sit back and “just see what happens.” It is time to pray to God in heaven that he will continue to be our leader, for with him we can do all things. Without him, we would surely fail.

Happy Thanksgiving!

This Thursday is another wonderful day in American history - Thanksgiving Day. Let us celebrate it also with the same enthusiasm as we do other holidays and give praise to God for all of our blessings. We had a missionary in our church last Sunday. As always, when they describe what it is like in other parts of the world, my eyes fill with tears. We are so blessed, even in our worst hour we stand far above all other nations. We are coming upon another great holiday in about a month, don’t forget to celebrate it, as well. It may be the greatest of all. It is actually a birthday celebration that is celebrated around the world. So, when this one comes, don’t forget to say, “Merry Christmas and have a God blessed new year.”

Class periods are longer Monday through Thursday, and there is a tutorial period during which time students may seek help from individual teachers.

Yates: Preserving blacksmithing for the next generation

www.leader-statesman.com

by Janet Dabbs Denis Yates of Gravois Mills is a blacksmith. He conducts blacksmithing classes for all ages in hope of perpetuating the art by passing it on to future generations. Blacksmiths shape and forge metal with extreme heat, using a hammer and an anvil. Early blacksmiths mended carts and wagons and they made armor, chains, swords and more. They sometimes acted as the town doctor or undertaker. Because of their intellect and business sense, they were also known to hold government offices and positions in the church. Yates’ grandfather, Hardy Sharder, was also a blacksmith. Sharder’s parents migrated from Germany to Hermann, Mo., where they helped to colonize the thriving German riverfront town. After inheriting his grandfather’s blacksmithing post vice, (a tool used to hold hot metal), Yates found himself being drawn to his grandfather’s craft. During high school, he took a job working with metal. He went on to be employed as a punch press operator, a torch operator, a machinist, a welder and finally a blacksmith. He specializes in in prototype tooling and design and custom work, not factory assembly welding. “I like blacksmithing because I can be creative,” he commented. “And I get to make things that have never been made before.” He likes the tough jobs, the ones people say can’t be done. “I think different than most people and I like a challenge,” he said.

Versailles Leader-Statesman, Thursday, November 24, 2016, Page 1B

Recycling old metal, he mostly crafts Civil War period pieces including cookware and grates, ladles, hinges, latches, tools, chisels, knives, ornamental iron, and candle holders (no horseshoes). “I am like the old-fashioned hardware store where customers used to come in and say ‘I need this or that made or repaired.’ Except back then, they couldn’t order it from a catalog.” He also repairs farm equipment. When blacksmithing, he fires up a coal forge to 2,800 degrees and then heats the metal to 2,000 degrees. “It makes the metal soft like Playdoh,” he explained. If it is too cold, the steal will tear, too hot, and it will disappear. The main tool used in blacksmithing is an anvil (a steel block used to pound the steel upon). An anvil can weigh anywhere from 50 to 600 pounds, depending on the job. His is 175 pounds. Once the metal is heated, he begins to shape it. His work is free-form, no molds. Holding the metal with tongs (long handled pliers) he moves the metal in and out of the fire to keep the right temperature, shaping the metal as he goes. As the metal gets hotter, it first glows red, then orange, yellow and finally white. The “forging heat” is the bright yellow-orange color. Once shaped it is then placed on a cooling rack. Some steel can be dipped in water to help it to cool faster. The final process is to warm the metal and then treat it with oil or bees wax. Yates travels to five fairs a year where he demonstrates blacksmithing. “I love it when the old folks come through and

tell me about how when they were young they helped their grandfather with blacksmithing. Even the women pumped the bellows (early blowers that stoked the coals). Besides experiencing the joy of creating things, blacksmithing is a ministry to Yates. While demonstrating his craft at fairs and carnivals, he has the opportunity to talk to a lot of people. “The life of a carny is a crazy life and it is hard. They are always traveling and there are a lot of temptations that can cause them to make bad decisions,” he explained. “I tell them that God is not up there with a ball bat waiting to pound them. Yes, he does want us to live a certain way, but it is for our own good, and the good of others. I give them hope that through Jesus there is forgiveness, and a door to a better life.” “The Lord speaks to each of us in different ways. He speaks to me using iron and fire,” Yates confided. “I make beautiful things out of scrap metal. In the same way, God can make something amazing out of a person’s life, no matter how messed up it is. ... He can start to shape us and our life, just like I do metal with iron and fire.” There are many unique things about Yates. He lived off the grid with sled dogs beginning in the 1980s for 10 years. Living in an eight-sided Hogan (a Navajo earth dwelling made of logs) in northern Minnesota, he survived with no electricity, running water, or telephone. He gardened, fished and hunted for his food and worked as a welder to purchase his other needs. “I wish I never left it. It was very

Versailles, Mo

peaceful,” he remembered. Yates moved to Missouri after the steal market crashed and settled in a log cabin off Cup Tree Road in Gravois Mills. His family, the Purvis’, owned one of the first resorts in the lake area. “My kin used to run moonshine in these parts,” he said laughing. He also has the record for having the most blood clots in Missouri. He has antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome, an autoimmune disorder in which the body recognizes certain normal components of blood and/or cell members as foreign substances and produces antibodies against them, sometimes causing blood clots, including heart attacks and strokes. “I am a walking miracle,” he said with thanksgiving. Yates is multi-talented. He plays and crafts teardrop and lap dulcimers. And he creates intricate wood Christmas ornaments using a special fret scroll saw. “It is very tedious work,” he said. “But the end result is worth it.” You can see him quite often at his favorite hangout, the Omega Coffee Shoppe in Laurie, where he sells his creations for coffee money. He has a big heart and adopted two of his sister’s sons. “I was their uncle/dad,” he fondly said. He also has two children of his own and he taught them all to blacksmith. “That is my favorite part of it all, to pass this old craft on,” he said. He gives private and group blacksmithing lessons. “I am starting to see a movement of young people getting away from the electronic addiction. Blacksmithing makes them get off the couch, use

their brain and a tape measure and get back to the old way of doing the math in their head, without computers. It also teaches problem solving skills. We need the grandpas of today to teach the next generation what they know. It’s not the kids’ fault. They want to do something.” Yates belongs to the 600-member Blacksmith Association of Missouri. “Only two percent of blacksmiths today make their living from the craft,” he reports. He would like to put together a crafters team made up of woodworkers, potters and blacksmiths, and set up at a local schools to expose students to the ancient crafts. He has taught blacksmithing to approximately 1,000 Boy Scouts for their metal-working merit

badge. Two years ago, at the Missouri State Fair, he ministered to a young girl and gave her a spice spoon. Later, her friend came back in tears and thanked him. The girl was living in a group home for terminally ill children and she was struggling because her time was near. “You don’t know how you touched that girl,” the lady told him. Yates adds, “Simple acts of kindness make all the difference in the world. If everyone did one a day, just imagine what our neighborhood would be like.” For information about blacksmithing or to schedule a demonstration, contact Yates at dfyeagle@eaglesforge.net.
