Quality Industries: no monitors, please

Quality Industries director Carol Elseman reminds the public they continue to receive paper, cardboard, aluminum and other metals to process for recycling. They do not, however, accept television or computer monitors. “It actually costs us to dispose

of those items and there are a limited number of places that will take monitors,” Elseman said. Public support is important and appreciated, Elseman said, but dropping off monitors is not beneficial to Quality Industries.

A Versailles resident reported last week receiving a telephone call from someone claiming to represent Medicare and needing to “update Medicare information.” The caller requested name,

address, and Medicare number. When contacted, Medicare reported they do not make those sort of telephone calls and warn people it is a scam. Do not provide any information over the telephone.

During the course of nearly two hours Monday, Dec. 19, the Morgan County R-II School District Board of Education heard arguments both in support of and in opposition to the possibility of the district leaving the TriCounty Conference to join the newly formed Ozark Highlands Conference. The decision to stay or go was characterized by high school principal Chris Marshall as “monumental” The Warsaw R-IX School District, a founding member of the Ozark Highlands Conference, recently sent a letter of invitation to the R-II school district to join the athletic conference. The conference currently includes Buffalo, Butler, El Dorado Springs, Sherwood, Warsaw, and Cole Camp (football only). The conference will officially begin in the 2018-2019 school year. One reason that has been cited for considering the switch to a new conference is that enrollment in R-II has remained flat or has declined, while some other schools in Tri-County have grown, putting R-II at a disadvantage. In the new conference, Versailles would compare favorably to other districts. R-II activities director Kyle Middleton used a PowerPoint slide presentation to make his case. While he said he wasn’t

Being able to have conversation with folks is important.” Marshall, voicing caution, said, “As of right now, this feels like an arranged marriage. There are many unknowns and that’s a problem. It’s a big decision to jump into something that isn’t established. There’s no coming back. I think we need to wait three years, play some of those teams. If enrollment continues to decline, then we can ask to join.” ‘Town hall’ planned In order for the board to gather all necessary information and opinions from both sides of the conference change issue, a public “town hall” meeting has been scheduled 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the high school commons in Versailles. Those interested in participating will be asked to submit questions/concerns in writing to be asked at the meeting. Responses gathered at this meeting will be combined with other input, statistics, and survey results and a decision whether to stay with Tri-County or join Ozark Highlands will be made at the next school board meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17 in

Spreading holiday cheer

R-II board hears arguments to leave, stay with Tri-County trying to influence the board one way or the other, his presentation leaned heavily in favor of joining the new conference. Middleton cited several reasons he thought the change would be beneficial, including: 1) More success for students in class and life. 2) Building a new tradition will result in a culture change and winning attitude.

“I’d like to build a new tradition.”

“This feels like an arranged marriage.”

Seeing the way the Good Shepherd Nursing Home District homes are put together as a nonprofit, meeting the board, and seeing how well the nursing homes Brad Gray were operated, sold him on coming to work for the district, he said. He said he also “really likes the people in the community.” Going forward, his short-term goal is to complete renovation work at the Good Shepherd Care Center, which is being implemented to update the facility. Gray is married to Kristie and they have two children and three grandchildren. The couple enjoys traveling to warm places together. He is an avid runner and runs approximately 100 miles a month.

Dr. William F. Smith II has accepted a threeyear contract with Wollongong University in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to teach master’s William F. degree-level courses in Smith II the College of Arts and Humanities’ Department of Media and Communication. His first day of instruction is scheduled Monday, Feb. 1, 2017. Established 23 years ago, the Dubai campus is a division of the Australia-based University of Wollongong. The main campus was established in 1951 as part of what was then the New South

Wales University of Technology. In an email to local family members, Smith described the university’s main campus as a “well-known top university south of Sydney,” and the Dubai campus as a “well-established” school. Dubai, with a population of more than 2.5 million, is the largest city in the U.A.E., located on the southeastern coast of the Persian Gulf. Smith is the son of Emma Lee and Ken Welker of Versailles, and the late William F. Smith. He is also the grandson of the late Edward W. and Carmen (Carrillo) Campbell. Smith’s wife Emily will accompany him at their new home in Dubai, where she also plans to work and study part-time. The couple’s marriage took place recently in China.

December 24, 1936 Within the short time the city decided to clean up, a noticeable difference prevails. In walking around Saturday, we failed to notice the usual amount of drinking, profane language, and other degrading acts on our streets. Our police force has been instructed to clean up the town, and much credit is due them. Versailles can, and will, be made a little city worth while, and such steps as the City Council, the mayor, and our police department will, if given the chance, lay foundation. It is up to the citizens to put the rest in order. December 28, 1956 John Gerber of Versailles has been selected for membership in Gamma Sigma Delta, honor society of agriculture at the University of Missouri. Only outstanding graduate stu-

dents in the College of Agriculture are selected for this honor. Gerber received his B.S. degree this year at the University and is majoring in soil. A graduate of Versailles high school, Gerber is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Gerber, northeast of Versailles. He is an army veteran. December 23, 1976 The Morgan County Health Center followed the pattern of other health institutions nationwide and halted its swine flu immunization program Thursday after reports of a possible link between the vaccine and a temporary paralytic disease. The program was stopped when national health officials indicated a concern that there was possibly a link between the swine flu vaccine and the Guillain-Barre syndrome, or French polio. It has been almost five weeks since the mass

swine flu clinics were held in Morgan County. Mrs. Bolton said no one in Morgan County has shown symptoms of the disease. December 26, 1996 Lincoln University earlier this year selected Bob Burris as one of the most revered older African-Americans in mid-Missouri. Burris, a past member of the Versailles City Council and former owner of Bob’s Motor Service, retired in 1991 after more than 50 years in the auto repair business. “I’m past the three-quarter century mark and working on my last quarter,” he says, then chuckles. “I was just beginning to wake up good when I reached a half century.” Burris’ advice to young people who believe their opportunities are limited is to search for the open doors.

Please keep this door closed, unless... “PLEASE KEEP THIS DOOR CLOSED.” For years, under the previous administration, those words were emblazoned on a sign attached to an interior door between office space and the back area of our newspaper building. I always thought, in a mocking sort of way, “If I keep this door closed, how can I possibly use it?” Well, when I purchased the newspaper a year ago, I affixed an addendum to the sign, because I could. Just under “PLEASE KEEP THIS DOOR CLOSED” I placed the following: “Unless, of course, you need to open it to get to the other side. Then, just close it after you’ve gone through.” Finally, logic had prevailed! We have another office door, which is never really used, because there is now a permanent open entrance into the office area. At one time, however, before that entrance was cut into

the wall, that door was necessary. As a joke, I put a sign above the door reading, “VIP Entrance.” Okay, so maybe the first sign was a small victory for accuracy and the second just my wry sense of humor, but now I feel much, much better. Doors are meant to be used. Sometimes we don’t want to go a particular place or talk about a certain subject and we say, “Don’t even open that door!” Other times, one may say something that leaves an opening for criticism or a great joke and we say, “Well, you left that door wide open!” There are doors to success, doors to secret passages, doors to the unknown, doors to the past, doors of possibility. We even have devised game shows involving doors: What’s behind door number three? I guess one could say life is merely a series of opening and closing the right doors at the

right time. Just watch out for those revolving doors that are never really either open or closed. Tricky. I once heard a wise man say, “If you don’t want to fall into sin, don’t lean on the door of temptation.” There are many things in my life I don’t have to worry about. One, for example, is I don’t have to worry about getting arrested for fighting in some dive bar. Why? Because I don’t get drunk at dive bars and go antagonizing people because they look at me askew. I’m not leaning on that door. A new year is at hand, full of opportunities to mess up, to succeed, to fall, to get back up. It’s full of doors, either to open, close or ignore. None, though, should we simply lean upon. So, when you see a “sign” in life that reads, “PLEASE KEEP THIS DOOR CLOSED,” consider the possibilities.

Library Bookworm

by Stacey Embry, Director, Morgan County Library On Facebook this morning, I shared a funny meme about this past year and the one approaching. I have never been one who understood the whole “I can’t wait until this year is over” mentality. In fact, I noticed so many comments in 2015 about looking forward to a new year that I might have made fun of it to some of my friends and family. Well, my special friend, Karma, decided to show me why people look forward to new years and new beginnings. Would I say 2016 was a “bad” year? Not necessarily. Even with some of the taxing moments of 2016, I still was able to appreciate what I had. A visit to the hospital with a family member; I could see the blessing in finding help and having insurance. I changed jobs this year; it added stress, but it has been rewarding and challenging in a great way. We all survived a weird election and discovered some people just don’t understand “if you don’t have something nice to say, say nothing at all.” So, yes, 2016 wasn’t awful. It just was what it was. This last week, I spent time preparing for 2017. I made new files and transferred old ones. My inner organizing nerd loved this. I brought out our strategic plan to see what I needed to start thinking about. I went “A Beautiful Mind” with sticky notes to line out my year. Don’t worry. I didn’t cover my whole office, just one little board; well, maybe two

little boards. I think 2017 is going to a great year for the library. We have four programs planned for the year. Program one will be with Bryan Jones. He will be sharing his percussion collection with us. He is a pretty unique cookie (don’t tell him I said that). He has various percussion instruments from all over the world and will share not only their sounds, but their history. We are looking at a Saturday, March 18 date for this event. Program two will be a “Farmer’s Market.” We are hoping to incorporate this event with our Summer Reading Program. This year, we look forward to involving our adults in SRP. I will be contacting various community members who grow and sell various produce, eggs, milk, meat, the list goes on. We are blessed by a community of self-sustaining, organic farmers and I am excited for them to share their knowledge and goods with us. Program three will involve pottery. Berenice was inspired by a children’s book we have. She has been nudging me about wanting to do this program for a few months. I put a sticky note up, so she knows I am listening. We are tentatively looking at September date for this program. Program four will be a community music recital. We have so many of our patrons who are learning to develop their various musical talents and would love to give them a place to share their talents with the rest of our community. This program is slated

for Sunday, Dec. 17. Our website is getting an overhaul. It has been down since November, but we are hoping by January it will be back; bigger and better. I am hoping to try my hand at a few grants this year, one being a technology grant. I have some big dreams for our library and technology will play a big hand in them. I don’t want to list specifics, but I will say these areas will benefit the seniors in our community and our genealogy-researching patrons. In February, we will be starting the “1000 Books before Kindergarten” program. It is pretty self-explanatory, reading before a child enters kindergarten. This event will be our first “new” thing we will be starting in 2017. I will share more about this program in next week’s Bookworm. Berenice has worked very hard preparing for this and we are excited to start it. So, 2016 is almost done and we are all looking toward a new year here at the library. If you are friends with me check out my 2016 post on Facebook. It sums it up. Yep 2016 might have thrown me for a loop; but, watch out 2017, I am ready for you. This “Beautiful Mind” has her sticky notes up and she means business! For more information, visit the Morgan County Library, 600 N. Hunter, in Versailles, call 573378-5319; or see the library’s website at morgancountylibrary. org. Library hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday.

Boonville to join Tri-County Conference

Versailles High School students Kelsie Byars, middle, and Olivia Manuel, right, spoke about their project focusing on employment of individuals with disabilities during halftime of the Tigers basketball game Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Leroy J. Local businesses recognized for support of Expect, Employ & Empower Campaign October was National Disability Employment Awareness Month, part of a U.S. Department of Labor campaign to educate the public about disability employment issues. In conjunction with this year’s observance, Versailles High School students Kelsie Byars and Olivia Manuel conducted a public relations project to focus on Morgan County. Byars and Manuel report that 16.9 percent of county residents

under the age of 65 have a disability. During halftime of the boys basketball game against Cole Camp Tuesday, Dec. 13, Byars and Manuel, on behalf of the high school DECA chapter, presented certificates to five local businesses, BW Graphics, Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Quality Industries, Subway, and Walmart, for their support of the Expect Employ & Empower

Campaign in Versailles. Both students said it was important to see the person and not just the disability and for persons or businesses interested in becoming involved to contact them at 573-378-4697 or send a message to the high school DECA chapter Facebook page. Their project was part of the Marketing II class at the high school taught by Becky Lehman.

The Tri-County Conference will have a new member at the start of the 2018-2019 academic year. The Boonville R-1 School District board of education voted unanimously to accept an invitation to join Tri-County during their meeting Tuesday, Dec. 20. Boonville will replace Warsaw, which had announced earlier it was leaving Tri-County after the 2017-2018 school year to become a member of the newly formed Ozark Highlands Conference. In an article published in the Boonville Daily News, Boonville superintendent Dr. Mark Ficken said there were multiple reasons the district decided to accept the offer, “It’s a conference likeness from top to bottom. We are more like the schools in Tri-County for multiple reasons: proximity, size and competitiveness. We are moving to the safest most stable situation that we can put our kids, parents, extracurricular activities programs and curricular programs in,” he said. After receiving the invitation, a committee was formed to gather information and make a recommendation to the school board. Boonville athletic director Chris Shikles was quoted as

saying Tri-County was a better fit. “I think the committee and the school board were comparing sizes of the schools,” Shikles said. “Obviously geography came into play. The sports that were offered also came into play. So, a lot of details and a lot of laying out what was best came into the decision.” Boonville has been a member of the North Central Missouri Conference since 2007. The league also includes Fulton, Hannibal, Kirksville, Marshall, Mexico and Moberly. Prior to joining the NCMC, Boonville was a member of the Missouri River Valley Conference for 36 years. Another factor in Boonville’s decision, district officials said, was travel time. NCMC schools play a home and away schedule for some sports, which meant Boonville had to take trips of nearly two hours to Hannibal and Kirksville. Boonville has an enrollment of 512 students, which would make the district the thirdlargest member of the TriCounty behind Eldon (605) and Osage (551). Enrollments at the other schools in the league are Southern Boone (501), Blair Oaks (430), California (416), Warsaw (388), Versailles (384),

and Hallsville (377). Boonville’s sports programs include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field for both boys and girls as well as baseball, football, softball, volleyball and wrestling. The Warsaw board of education unanimously approved a motion to join the Ozark Highlands Conference during their October meeting. Other members of the new conference are Buffalo, Butler, Cole Camp (football only), El Dorado Springs, and Sherwood, which is located in Creighton. The conference will begin competition in the 20182019 academic year. Warsaw has been a member of Tri-County since 1980.

Beginning next high school baseball season, pitchers will be placed on pitch counts. At its November meeting, the Missouri State High School Activities Association Board of Directors approved a recommendation from the baseball advisory committee that pitchers be placed on daily pitch limits based on their year in school. The advisory committee voted unanimously to use the Pitch Smart requirements suggested by USA Baseball and Major League Baseball. Under the new rules, seniors and juniors are restricted to a daily maximum of 105 pitches while sophomores and freshmen

are allowed a maximum of 95 pitches daily. Pitchers can finish pitching to a batter if they reach the maximum number during an at-bat. Pitchers can pitch two days in a row as long as they don’t exceed 30 pitches per day, but they cannot throw three consecutive days. If a pitcher throws 76 or more pitches in a day, he will be required to take four days of rest, between 61 and 75 pitches requires three days rest, between 46 and 60 pitches means two days rest and between 31 and 45 pitches requires one day of rest before returning to the mound. The pitch counts apply to regular and post-season games. In June, the National

Federation of State High School Associations changed baseball rule 6-2-6 requiring each state association “to develop its own pitching restriction policy based on the number of pitches thrown during a game.” The new rules are in response to the increase in the number of arm injuries sustained by young pitchers in recent years. Both teams will record pitch counts during the game and coaches should verify the numbers after each half inning. Both teams will sign the pitch count forms at the conclusion of the game and must submit the information to the MSHSAA website within 24 hours or face a $25 fine.

Car connects with Co-Mo

A woman was hospitalized Tuesday, Dec. 27 after driving her car through a chain-link fence around the Co-Mo Connect shed at Walnut and Newton streets in Versailles. The driver of the Saturn with handicap tags was taken by MidMo Ambulance to St. Mary’s Health Center in Jefferson City. A witness told investigating personnel the Saturn came to a stop in the street, then swerved off the left side of the roadway at low speed, went under the chainlink fence and off an embankment, and came to rest with its front bumper touching the CoMo Connect shed. The accident was investigated by Versailles City Police Officer Kyle Towles, with assistance from other Versailles police officers, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office. The Saturn was towed by Whan’s Towing of Versailles with apparently minor damage. Its air bags did not deploy, but the driver was wearing a seat belt during the crash. No interruption of Co-Mo internet service was reported.

In contrast, last year’s net assets increased by $191,222. The board accepted the auditor’s report. Board Chairman Ron Riley signed the representation letter and the certification of the audit results, which will be notarized and sent to the Missouri State Auditor’s Office, along with the final audit report.

proximate $5,000 raise for both Laurie Police Chief Mark Black and Clarke. Clarke reported at the Tuesday, Dec. 12 meeting that, since that time, a judge has placed a temporary injunction blocking the new rules. The wage increase became effective in December and the board has decided to continue to pay the increase. Finances • The board approved an ordinance adopting an annual budget for the fiscal year beginning Jan. 1. • The board forgave a sewer bill for Hairport in the amount of $213.51. The bill was escalated due to a water leak. • The board approved endof-the-year employee bonuses in the amount of $100. • A decision to donate $200 to the Westlake Aquatic Center was tabled due to a question as to whether or not the city can give public money to a private institution. Grantham was charged with looking into the matter. In closed session, the board voted “no” on the purchase of real estate offered to the city. The 2016 ordinance accepting the streets stipulates that the adoption of any subsequent new roads in the Wellington Woods subdivision would be required to meet the acceptance criteria in the second Ordinance 200923. Wage regulation In August, the board approved increasing the wages paid to salaried city employees in accordance with changes in the Department of Labor and the Fair Labor Standards Act regulations. The primary change to the regulations was an increase in the weekly salary requirements for employees paid on a salaried basis. This was an ap-
