by Janet Dabbs The Sunrise Beach Board of Trustees, at their Monday, Sept. 12 board meeting, approved an ordinance establishing a stop sign at the intersection of Foresen Park and Kula Bay Drive for the purpose of public safety enhancement due to increased commercial traffic. In addition, Sunrise Beach City Planner Roger Corbin reported he had submitted an application for an engineering traffic study to the Missouri Department of Transportation Traffic Engineering Program. The village is working to obtain the traffic study to ascertain if a traffic light is needed at the intersection of American Legion Road/Lake Road 5-33 and Highway 5 near the Hurricane Deck Elementary School. According to Corbin, there have been multiple accidents at the intersection, as well as a fatality accident five years ago. Corbin also stated the Sunrise Beach Police and Fire departments are in agreement that there needs to be a light at the intersection. He added that the Camden County R-III School District is also interested in the study. The project would be a joint project between the school district and the village. Planning and zoning The board tabled a recommendation by the Sunrise Beach Planning and Zoning Commission to approve a request by Vince Bachefor, Royal Homes LLC, to amend the original plat of Hawk Lake Estates, presently zoned Residential 1. Bachefor has already constructed one home on the old plat and the amended plat would enable him to create smaller lots and place nearly double the number of homes in the same land area. Hurricane Deck implementing finger scanning pilot program

by Janet Dabbs Camdenton R-III School District is implementing a biometric finger scanning identification system in an effort to provide accurate student identification as well as security for student lunch accounts. According to Camdenton RIII School District Food Service Director Dawn Matthews, the system will first be tested at the Hurricane Deck and Osage Elementary Schools. “To work out all the kinks,” Matthews added. “And then we will bring it to the Dogwood Elementary school.” She said they are using the new identification system because they are held accountable for school records through audits and they want to eliminate clerical errors as well as provide an “easy and accurate way to identify students and be sure no one else can charge items to their ac-

counts.” Biometric identification is an automated method of identifying a person based upon physical or behavioral characteristics. “Our school has selected the identiMetrics Biometric Finger Scanning Identification System because it is secure, accurate, cost-effective and non-intrusive,” Matthews explained. Using a finger scanner, the software scans certain unique points on the finger to create and store individual templates that identify each student. When the student returns, the software again scans the finger and looks for a match in the database. When a match is found, the student is identified. “We are not fingerprinting the students,” Matthews clarified. “The software scans the finger for identification. It does not store a copy of the fingerprints.”

Word on the Street

Instead, the software creates a template of the unique points on the finger. “The template is converted to a unique number and is stored in the school’s database with the same high level of security of all our records,” Matthews said. The templates are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, FERPA. FERPA is the same Federal Law that protects all student records. According to Matthews, when a child graduates or is no longer enrolled in the school system, the templates will be deleted. At no time is a fingerprint image stored. “No finger scans can recreate or deliver fingerprints to any agency-governmental or otherwise,” Matthews assured. For questions about the new system, call Matthews at 573346-9234.

September 14, 1916 On account of being unable to get the type set, The Statesman failed to give a lot of news last week. Among other things was the marriage of our townsman, Ora Leatherman and Miss Gussie Staples, Sept. 2, with the Rev. Keys officiating. We knew Ora had an eye on a girl for several months, but we did not know things were to happen so soon. Ora is an excellent young man and the girl he got is worthy of him. A little wisdom from Yogi, or was that Yoda? “Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.” That’s one of the oft-quoted and humorous observations of the famous Yankees catcher Yogi Berra. While Yogi’s statement is a classic contradiction in terms, I totally understand what he was trying to say. The obvious, however, is that the restaurant to which Yogi was referring was veritably humming with customers. His familiar haunt just wasn’t the comfortable, neighborhood hangout for the “old gang” anymore. Success had changed things. Yes, success changes things. I heard a comment from an area resident last weekend that I just couldn’t sit back and ignore. It reminded me of Yogi’s saying, but it wasn’t nearly as funny: “Nobody supports local businesses in this town anymore.” My response was immediate: “That’s just not true. There are businesses in town that are succeeding and more are opening.” Part of the issue, I believe, is that people complain about what we don’t have instead of looking to what we do have. Many people are constantly

saying “if only” Versailles had this industry or that business. Or, even more depressing, they continue to bemoan the loss of the Dixon-Ticonderoga pencil factory. Please don’t misunderstand me. The loss of that factory took the breath out of our town for a while. A point of pride and way of life for many was ripped from our midst. It hurt. I covered that story for the newspaper in 2005 and, yes, it saddens me to think about it. But that was more than a decade ago. We’re still here. We need to, as a community, be focused on the signs of new life we are witnessing. Yes, success changes things. People often utter expressions that, like Yogi’s statement, are contradictions in terms. One example is saying “We need new businesses in town, new jobs!” Then, when a new egg-laying operation is being constructed — owned and operated by a local person who cares about his town and is investing time, energy, and effort into its

i m p r ove m e n t — we hear the old, worn-out complaint, “Not in my backyard!” Either nobody goes there anymore or it’s too crowded. Do we want new businesses or do we want to remain stagnant? Yes, success changes things. If everyone listened to the naysayers, we wouldn’t have people who take a chance on our town. I took that chance. There are others, too, who have taken the risk and ignored those who criticize, “Nobody supports local businesses in this town anymore.” To quote another beloved, short, venerable character who uttered memorable sayings: “You think Yoda stops teaching, just because his student does not want to hear? A teacher Yoda is. Yoda teaches like drunkards drink ...” and, of course, the inspirational Yoda quote we all should memorize: “Do or do not. There is no try.” Some people will succeed despite the efforts of others to discourage them, if only because they know that success changes things.

placed shipments of fish in the lake at intervals, keeping the lake well-stocked with a variety of game fish. September 14, 1956 There will be a free chest xray unit in Morgan County from Oct. 4 through Oct. 11. All residents are invited to take advantage of this opportunity to get a free chest x-ray. The Morgan County Tuberculosis Association is the sponsoring organization whose board met with presidents, health chairmen and other interested persons in the county last Friday to complete plans for the project. September 9, 1976 Morgan County was among 36 Missouri counties in the heart of the state’s grain belt that was de-

clared a disaster area Wednesday by Gov. Christopher S. Bond, as one of the driest growing seasons since the drought of the 1930s. Area corn and milo crops are expected to produce less than half of the average yield. Much of the milo is small and dried up. September 12, 1996 The Morgan County R-II Long-Range Planning Committee, at a Monday, Sept. 9 meeting with the school board, recommended that a new middle school be built adjacent to the present high school and renovations be made to the elementary and high school buildings at an estimated cost of $6.7 million. The plan also includes kitchen facilities and a cafeteria to be shared with the high school.

Library Bookworm

by Stacey Embry, Director, Morgan County Library Children’s author and illustrator of the popular Baby Llama series, Anna Dewdney, died Saturday, Sept. 3, after a 15-month battle with brain cancer. She was 50. Dewdney wrote a 2013 opinion piece for the Wall Street Journal, emphasizing that “empathy is as important as literacy” when it comes to educating children. “When we read with a child, we are doing so much more than teaching him to read or instilling in her a love of language,” she wrote. “We are doing something that I believe is just as powerful, and it is something that we are losing as a culture: by reading with a child, we are teaching that child to be human. When we open a book, and share our voice and imagination with a child, that child learns to see the world through someone else’s eyes.” I worked as a parent educator with the PAT (Parents as Teachers) program for a few years. A huge part of the program revolved around reading to your child; in fact we read a story at every visit. Reading aloud to a child has so many benefits including helping children acquire early language skills, develop positive associations with books and reading, and build a stronger

foundation for school success. I agree with Dewdney that the most important part of reading to a child is not the language skills learned but the social interaction that is developed. There is nothing sweeter than a child climbing into your lap to share a book. It is not important if you get the whole story read or that you stick to the words provided, it is the time and the sharing. I treasure it. This week, I shared on our website about using audio books with text to encourage reading development. One of the stories I read online had some good information, “hearing a book read on tape helps her see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way.” Part of any reading aloud is the theatrical performance it can become. My favorite read-aloud with my girls was the Junie B. Jones books; I loved imitating her sassy character. Although the article I read online had some good information, I was not happy with one of their listed “benefits” of audios: “… these books not only provide you with an occasional break from reading (and rereading the same stories again and again)…” I can still remember reading “The Dragon in a Wagon” book to my daughter every night, I had it memorized. Honestly, it

was some free book we got in the mail that just stressed word usage and did not have much of a story. Did I wish for an audio book so that I didn’t have to read it? No way. I loved sitting beside her in her little bed reading that silly book. It is more than a lesson; it is a special bonding moment. We had a patron come in this week and she was a storyteller, an exceptional storyteller. I think we could invite her back and people would come from all over just to listen to her talk about growing up in Morgan County. Reading aloud, listening to audio books, or listening to a storyteller is for all ages. The literary world lost a great lady this week. We will miss her stories. The most touching thing I read about her death was her last request. Dewdney requested that, in lieu of a funeral service, people read to a child instead. So, go forth and read to someone, child or adult. Treasure the moment. For more information, visit the Morgan County Library, 600 N. Hunter, in Versailles, call 573378-5319; or see the library’s website at morgancountylibrary. org. Library hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday.

Ehlers honored by city, state, U.S. Walter Ehlers of Stover received honors from the city, state, and federal government at his 100th birthday party Saturday, Sept. 10 in a crowded American Legion hall in Stover. Stover Mayor Eckie Knierim presented Ehlers a framed mayoral proclamation, which Mayor Pro Tem Cody Worthley read aloud before handing copies to Ehlers’ three daughters Judith Schuerman, Joyce Marriott, and Rita Barron. District 58 State Rep. David Wood presented Ehlers a framed resolution from the Missouri legislature, as well as a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol Monday, June 6, a day of great significance to Ehlers. June 6 was the birthday of Ehlers’ late wife Renita. It was also the day he was shipped overseas for World War II in 1943, the day he was wounded in action during the D-Day invasion in 1944, and the day he received enough points to be discharged from the army in 1945. Gary Wahlers, parish ministry associate at Pyrmont Trinity Lutheran Church, noted the church’s records show Ehlers was baptized there Sept. 24, 1916 and confirmed April 13, 1930. Between those dates, English-language services were

introduced at Pyrmont in 1920, and the wood stove was removed from the central aisle in 1928. Also offering remarks was the Rev. Jerry Kurka, pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stover, where Ehlers was a member from his marriage in 1940 and for many years afterward. Kurka noted Ehlers always participates in chapel services at the Golden Age Living Center, even though he can no longer read or sing. He also appreciated Ehler’s inspiring stories about his military service and his life as a farmer. The Rev. Erik Rottmann, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Versailles, where Ehlers is currently a member, read a selection extolling the courage of those who served their country in World War II. “Everybody in this room is measurably better because of Walter’s devotion to duty,” he said, “which is another word for love.” “We will not have many opportunities to honor such heroes as these,” Rottmann added, “and a lifetime of thanks is not enough.” Offering closing remarks was the Rev. Duane Levin, a Lutheran minister who is related by marriage to the Ehlers family. The legion hall was festooned with photos and memorabilia

from throughout Ehlers’ life, including wedding photos, panoramic views of the railyard where he worked for some time, and portraits of him in uniform. A luncheon followed the presentations.

Connor’s touchdowns rally Tigers to come-from-behind win vs. Pintos David Connor’s one-yard run with three seconds left in the game gave the Versailles Tigers a 14-10 Tri-County Conference win over the California Pintos Friday, Sept. 9 at the Audrey J. Walton Sports Complex in Versailles. It was the Tigers first win over the Pintos since a 42-21 victory in 2009 and evened their record at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference. California falls to 13 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Versailles defense held the Pintos on downs at the Tigers 32yard line with 2:50 remaining in the game. On the first play of the series, Connor took off around left end and gained 43 yards to the Pintos 25. Head coach Broc Silvers said it was a new play the Tigers put into the offense this week, “We ran that three times before (during the game) and David kept running outside the kickout block. We had never shown that before, it was something new this week. They were overflanking our trips side because they had seen us roll out so much. Our roll draw has been there for us and we wanted to get the ball in David’s hands a little more and in the first quarter he kept bouncing out. This time he let it set up and took off.” Later in the drive, RB Taylor Dobbins picked up a first down with a run to the California oneyard line. “I put Shane Randall and Grant Hutchison at fullback and we ran a toss sweep with Taylor, the fresh running back we had, and we had never run that play once in our life. We just decided, hey, this is our best option, and Taylor gets down to one,” Silvers said. That set up the winning score with Connor burrowing into the end zone behind center Ayden Easton. “I’m trying to getting a play called to David,” Silvers said. “He doesn’t realize the clock stopped because (Dobbins) had run out of bounds. He thought it was going to be a no huddle situation, he goes quarterback sneak and gets in.” Sam Bowman kicked the extra point for the four-point lead. A pooch kick by Bowman

VMS softball opens season at South Callaway

The Versailles Middle School softball team began their 2016 season at the South Callaway Tournament Saturday, Sept. 10 in Mokane. The Lady Tigers lost to Hallsville, 22-4, and to South Callaway, 15-6. Hallsville won the tournament title. Madison Lucas-Avey had three hits, Joscelynn Marriott drove in two runs and Matti Hoeppner scored five runs in the two games for the team.

gave the Pintos the ball at their 40 with one second left to run a play, which turned out to be a pass completion to the Tigers 42yard line as the horn sounded. The players and coaches on the Versailles sideline ran onto the field to celebrate the victory in the Tigers home opener. California scored on their first possession of the game for a 7-0 lead. RB Dakota Henry capped a 93-yard drive with a six-yard run and Jose Magana added the extra point kick with 4:41 to play in the opening quarter. After a Tigers punt, the Pintos drove the ball from their 44 to the Versailles 11 and Magana came on to kick a 28-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead with 7:15 to go in the first half. After forcing another Tigers punt, California took over at their 28. On a rushing play, Henry fumbled the football and Connor scooped up the loose ball and dashed 53 yards down the right sideline for a Tigers touchdown. Bowman’s extra point cut the Pintos lead to 10-7 with 1:40 left in the half. The Pintos came right back and moved the ball down to the Versailles 16-yard line, but Magana missed a 33-yard field goal try and the Tigers ran out the clock. It was a defensive struggle in the second half as neither team could get anything going offensively. After forcing the Tigers sixth punt of the game, the Pintos took over at their seven-yard line with 7:29 to play and moved the ball on the ground to the Tigers 32 before

being stopped on downs, setting up the game-winning drive. “This is the biggest win of our career here. Hallsville last year was a lot like this ballgame. I think this is going to help us keep the momentum going,” Silvers said. Versailles totaled 143 yards of offense, 114 rushing and 29 passing. Randall led the running attack with 57 yards on eight carries. Connor rushed for 38 yards and completed four of six passes for 29 yards with one interception. Dobbins caught three passes for 27 yards. Gage Smith led the Tigers defense with 13 tackles. Devin Radcliff had 11 stops and Randall and Connor had 10 tackles each. Smith and Michael Trotter each had three tackles for loss. The Tigers host the Warsaw Wildcats in a conference contest Friday, Sept. 16. The Wildcats are 0-4 following a 42-6 loss to Osage. Versailles won last year’s meeting, 46-14, at Warsaw. Silvers says the Wildcats have struggled recently, but are improving under coach Paul Thomas, and will run the ball, “I definitely think they’re getting better over there and Coach Thomas is getting them going. They’re going to run trap and counter and sweep and a little bit of option. They run the ball downhill and they run hard, so we’re going to have to do a good job up front defensively and try to get to them before they get going.” Score by quarter California 7 3 0 0 10 Versailles 0 7 0 7 14

Tigers cross country opens, Reger places seventh at Linn Invitational The Versailles cross country team ran in its first meet of the season at the 38th Annual Linn Invitational Saturday, Sept. 10 in Linn. The Tigers came in 16th place with 401 points. Fulton edged Warrensburg, 67 to 69, to win the team title. Leading the way for the Tigers was Kendall Reger, who finished seventh in 19:44.95. Weston Liebl was 107th in 23:57.53. Trent Hyman came in 117th in 24:30.36. Joe Jeffries placed 121st in 24:44.11. Bobby Love was 130th in 25:32.42 and Kutter Baumgartner finished 154th in 28:34.51. Edward Wilhite of Warrensburg won the race in 18:33.51. For the Lady Tigers, Allison Taylor finished in 50th place with a time of 26:22.15 and Keely Gustafson was 59th in 27:15.94. Julia McIntyre of New Haven came in first with a time of 21:41.17. Tigers coach Mark Garcia said the course was extremely wet due to the storms that moved through the area overnight Friday and that affected everyone’s times, “Most of the course had standing water that was a few inches deep and reaching to the top part of your shoes. Most runners and even some coaches had at least one fall out on the course, especially on the hills that were so muddy that it was extremely difficult to get a foothold going uphill, and it was almost easier to slide down the downhills than to try and run down them. I usually tell my runners to try and crest each hill and let their momentum carry them over to the downhill, but in this race most runners were simply trying to keep their feet and there wasn’t any “free real estate” on the course. Times were slow for everyone. Not kind of slow, really slow, like twothree minutes slow for the entire

field of runners. After seeing my girls race, I told my guys not to even think about their times but instead to just go out and compete, which they did.” Garcia said he was proud of how Taylor and Gustafson ran in their first cross country races, “Allison and Keely are two of the hardest competitors I’ve ever coached, and both of them have leg speed aplenty that was evident from last year’s track season and practices this season. Both got out aggressively in the race, top 20 through the halfmile, but the course definitely limited their ability to use their leg speed through the latter part of the race, and neither of them was able to get into a rhythm that allowed them to chase down competition like we had talked about. I think both of these girls will turn quite a few heads this year once they are able to race in better conditions on courses that will play to their strengths rather than their weaknesses.” The Tigers coach said Reger had a good race despite a couple of mishaps, “I told Kendall to put himself in the top 20 from the start and just be aggressive rather than try to run negative splits. He got out fast, put himself in the top 15, and then before the mile mark he fell pretty hard and hit his head. As he was getting up he hit his head again as a runner was trying to avoid him but instead collided with him. Rather than getting discouraged, Kendall got angry, got up, and found another gear. The rest of the race he ran between seventh and 10th place, where over the last 400 meters he was able to pull away from a small pack of runners to finish seventh place out of 167 runners.” Garcia said the other members of the team had a good race, “Weston Liebl made a solid cross country debut and I’m

excited to see how he’ll improve this year. He put in a great track season last year as a freshman. Trent Hyman and Cylan Burns were probably the two biggest surprises for me this weekend. Both ran faster this weekend than I would have anticipated, and they really upped their game once the gun went off. Joe Jeffries had an off race. He wasn’t feeling even close to one hundred percent come race time, and it was evident in how he ran and how he looked as he ran. The two positives that I got from the race with Joe was that he really battled hard despite feeling terrible from the get-go, and the other positive is that once he runs how I know he can run, our team will look even better and we’re a young team with no seniors. Bobby Love ran a very good race and has probably been my most consistent runner over the past two years in terms of how much he continues to improve and how well he does pacing himself in each race. Kutter Baumgartner also ran his debut cross country meet and looked strong out on the course.” Burns lost his shoe in the last two hundred meters, which had his time chip in it so officially his time was not recorded, nor his place, but unofficially Garcia had him at about 124th place in 25:15. Team scores Boys 1, Fulton, 67. 2, Warrensburg, 69. 3, Linn, 105. 4, Russellville, 113. 5, New Haven, 131. 6, New Bloomfield, 209. 7, Centralia, 233. 8, Southern Boone, 234. 9, Tipton, 239. 10, Osage, 276. 11, Wright City, 293. 12, Moberly, 341. 13, Hermann, 344. 14, Hallsville, 375. 15, Eldon, 386. 16, Versailles, 401. 17, South Callaway, 427. 18, Montgomery County, 452. 19, North Callaway, 499. 20, Wellsville, 556.

Library is developing book clubs, organizing volunteers

Morgan County Library director Stacey Embry, reported Thursday, Sept. 8, to the library’s board of trustees, that a volunteer meeting Wednesday, Sept. 7 was well attended. Embry said she has plans for using volunteers to shelve and shelf-read, decorate the library for holidays, and to assist with the library’s Summer Reading Program. Embrey said, as volunteers are available and programs at the library develop, volunteer opportunities will expand. To inquire about volunteer opportunities, contact the library, 573-3785319. Book club update Embry reported a meeting in August to discuss what types of book clubs the community would be interested in was very successful. She will be implementing adult book club groups that will meet quarterly beginning the last Wednesday in November. Book club groups for youth will meet after school on earlyout Wednesdays. “The goal is to begin slowly and grow as the numbers dictate,” Embry said. Library to open Mondays The Morgan County Library will be open Mondays beginning in January 2017. The board approved the additional hours after a revised staffing schedule was discussed.

Feedback, nursing home Embry read a letter from patron Kelly Rottmann in which she expressed appreciation for many of the new opportunities the library now has. Embry also said residents of area nursing homes will be invited to use the library and to discuss ways that the library can come to them. Building and grounds It was reported the library’s electric bill is still high due to recent heat and humidity. The water bill is better. It was determined the groundskeeping budget will need to be increased. This will ensure the care of the landscaped beds is done more frequently. Currently they are being tended quarterly. Oasis Tree Service will be contacted to do weeding this month. Concrete and asphalt work is complete. Library briefs - The audit process will change some of library’s accounting procedures - Embry will attend the MLA and MPLD Conferences. The children’s librarian will attend a SRP Conference. In addition, Embry is considering additional meetings and/or training for other staff members. - A prosecuting attorney’s letter has been effective encouraging patrons to return library materials that are long overdue.

- The fax machine is being replaced. Embry is working on a way to provide more privacy for scanned and faxed materials. - Equalization and Arts and Entertainment funds will increase in 2017. - Land donated by the city will need to be tree-scaped in the spring to define boundaries. - Each trustee shared goals and desires for the next five years. Embry will compile a document that schedules and defines these goals. - An unattended minors policy was approved. - Currently there is $14,800 in a donor fund. The donor was contacted for approval to use $3,200 for technology and additional funds for instituting a new children’s activity program to be announced before the end of the year. The next meeting of the Morgan County Library Board of Trustees is scheduled 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 at the library in Versailles.

MDA offers 90/10 farm-to-table grant

The Missouri Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday, Sept. 7 it will accept applications for a 90-percent matching grant to help place locally grown agricultural products in Missouri facilities. Senate Bill 665, signed Friday, June 24 by Govenor Jay Nixon, changed the legislation formerly known as Farm to School to Farm to Table, broadening its scope to include other types of facilities with food service programs. Farm to Table helps place locally-grown farm products in Missouri schools, correctional facilities, hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, and military bases, meanwhile strengthening farm economies. Eligible applicants are small businesses purchasing or processing locally-grown products from a small farmer whose primary market is institutions in Missouri. These businesses may include the actual producer of the agricultural products. The grant is competitive, and

applications are scored based on their potential for economic development, credibility, merit, and source and level of matching funds. The maximum individual grant is $200,000. Applicants must provide a 10-percent cash match toward the resource being funded. Eligible resources include, but are not limited to, coolers, freezers, washing, bagging, sorting and/or packing equipment, and professional services for developing good agricultural practices/good handling practicies and hazard analysis and critical control analysis plans. Not funded are farming production practices or equipment, paying off debt, salaries or wages, motor vehicles, or operating expenses. Applications must be completed and received by the Missouri Agricultural and Small Business Development Authority by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28. For more details, visit agriculture.mo.gov, or contact MASBDA at masbda@mda. mo.gov or (573) 751-2129.

Pummill, both of Versailles, will be suiting up in the black and green, ready to dazzle the crowds during the band’s many upcoming performances. Keener, a graduate of Stover High School, is a freshman currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in pre-education and music education. Pummill, a Versailles High School graduate, is a CMU senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music education.

Century farms honored by county extension

The University of Missouri Extension council recognized four new Missouri Century Farms in Morgan and Moniteau counties at its family night dinner Monday, Aug. 29 in Versailles. To qualify as a Missouri Century Farm, the same family must have owned the farm for 100 years or more as of Dec. 31, 2016. The family may consist of direct descendants only. The farm may consist of no less than 40 acres of the original land and make a financial contribution to the overall farm income. Qualifying farms are recognized with a certificate and farm sign for display at the farmstead. More than 161 farms in Morgan and Moniteau counties have qualified for this recognition. The newly recognized Morgan County century farms were: • The Wayne Kroeschen Sr. farm, acquired in 1858 by Frederick Whitrock with 190 original acres.

• The Brown-Vogt farm, owned by Richard, Rhonda, Rodney and Robin Vogt, and originally purchased by Richard and Rodney’s great-great-grandfather William P. Bonnie in 1895. The MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resourc-
