Patriotic presentation

Gwen Grapes, inset, and her husband Ron Grapes, representing Morgan County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5178 Auxiliary, Wednesday, Aug. 31, brought brand-new American flags, manufactured in the United States, to replace 11 worn-out, faded, or tattered classroom flags at Morgan County R-II Elementary School. The couple presented teachers with the new flags in a special gathering in the school’s library. The old flags will be properly retired in a respectful ceremony later this year. Receiving flags were principal Kim Murdock and assistant principal Ryan Marriott (on behalf of teachers who couldn’t be present), and teachers Leslie Coleman, Allison Miller, Joni Spalding, Joy Dock, Sandy Yeokum, MariPat Brooks, Dana Edgar, and Lisa Brodersen. The VFW pays fully for the flags donated to the school. (photos by Bryan E. Jones)

Veterans donate flag to city; egg operation to start in three weeks be coming in empty and leaving with his eggs, just a fraction of the overall loaded weight. A larger concern was the feed trucks, which could potentially weigh as much as 80,000 pounds. Anderson has already adjusted his proposed route to the egg facility from the east (Sunrise Lane) to the west (Jefferson Place), in order to minimize disruption. Chad Hartman, chief of police, mentioned trash trucks driving in town do “90 percent” of the damage to the city’s streets. Silvey said the trash trucks were a “necessary evil.” A proposed ordinance setting weight limits on commercial vehicles was tabled and will be reconsidered in light of the discussion. The egg facility should be in operation in three weeks. Business of beautification A group of interested citizens was present at the council meeting. Jacquie Brewer spoke on behalf of the group of “progressive people” who are “vested in the community” and who are seeking ways to improve the town. Brewer said they are explor-

ing options such as a beautification committee, clean-up efforts, forming an Industrial Trust Board and/or an economic development group, youth-focused activities, and the possibility of a city planner. Brewer said she wanted businesses in and around Versailles to “not just survive, but thrive” and to raise the standard of living. “All these things can be done and we have people who are willing to help,” she said. $700,000 savings The council approved an ordinance allowing for the refunding of the combined waterworks and sewerage system revenue bonds. The initial amount financed was $5 million. The cost of the project was more than $700,000 under budget. The revised ordinance would allow for the refinance of the actual $4,292,500 cost of the project, saving nearly $3,500 per month. Council Briefs - The position of Police Clerk was created for when the police department moves to its new location next to city hall. Shelly

Sidebottom was appointed Police Clerk. - The council voted to let bids for the operation of the wastewater treatment plant, once the contract with Alliance ends later this year. - The preliminary audit of the city has been completed, with good results. - K-9 officer “Heidi” will be retired. Handler Travis Yeager will now own the dog. - Casey Shoemate was approved for hire as a part-time police officer. - A bid of $10,000 by Paul Glenn for the demolition of the former MFA building was apprroved. The demolition must be done by Sept. 26. - A 30-day moratorium on the issuance of mobile home permits was instituted until the council can draft a ordinance. - A bid by Tracy Miller to clean city hall and the police department, at $240 per week, was approved. She will clean the civic center after each use for $35. The council next meets 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4 at city hall in Versailles.

The Versailles LeaderStatesman encourages all local businesses, churches, and organizations to consider sponsoring this year’s Newspapers in Education program in Versailles. With a one-time, tax-deductible donation payable to the Missouri Press Foundation, sponsors can help place free newspapers in participating classrooms at Versailles Elementary School and South Elementary School in Gravois Mills. This would enable more than 625 students to use Versailles’ community newspaper in their class work. Newspapers in the classroom can help students build skills in reading and math, Ken Henry works Friday, Sept. 2 repairing curb with cement on the entryway to civic awareness, community McDonald’s restaurant off Highway 52 in Versailles. Henry services 10 McDonald’s engagement, and awareness stores in the region including Sedalia, Warrensburg, Jefferson City, and more. (photo by Bryan E. Jones) of non-fiction subjects.

Each participating classroom will take turns submitting student writings to be published in the newspaper. The program also provides serialized, educational stories during weeks when student writings are not available. Sponsors will be recognized by an advertisement on the same page as the N.I.E. material each time it is published throughout the school year. The current publication schedule is 32 weeks. These ads would be seen by all the proud parents, who read their children’s N.I.E. writings, as well as be other relatives and community members. The size of the ad depends on sponsorship level: $250 for a one-column by two-inch ad ($320 value), $500 for a two-

by-two ad ($640 value), and $1,000 for a two-by four ad ($1,280 value). United States Navy veteran David Hutchison, a native of Versailles and a veteran of World War II, along with a contingent of veterans from United States Submarine Veterans, Tuesday, Sept. 6, presented the City of Versailles with a flag that was officially flown over the nuclearpowered submarine Missouri (SSN 780) while in port. The flag was a white City of Versailles banner with Morgan County and an apple insignia, signed by the crew of the Missouri. Mayor Terry Silvey said it is an honor to receive the flag. Other veterans in the presentation group included Joseph Ryan of Stover; Ed Irwin, David Oelrichs, and Uel Smith, all of Jefferson City; Sam Spayde of Russellville; and John Cronenberg of Olean. A bit of ‘egg’citement John Anderson, a local banker and Versailles area resident, addressed the council concerning a new egg-laying operation he is building just outside city limits. He told the council he grew up in Versailles and hopes his new venture will be a benefit to the

As a result, smell

will be minimal. Some residents near the egg operation’s construction and city council members were concerned about heavy feed trucks and egg trucks on city streets. Andersen said a full load of eggs is approximately 36,000 pounds, but his operation would be the first stop, so trucks would

Sunrise Beach woman recalls Sept. 11, 2001

by Janet Dabbs On Sept. 11, 2001, Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes. They deliberately crashed two of the planes into both towers of the World Trade Center in New York, N.Y. The third plane was crashed into the Pentagon near Washington, D.C. After a heroic struggle that diverted the fourth plane from a target believed to be the White House or the U.S. Capitol, it crash in an empty field in Pennsylvania. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks. Many Americans watched the horrific events unfold via live television. Sunrise Beach resident Jane Boyce was much closer. She was working in an office across the street from the Pentagon when it was struck. “It felt worse than the ’97 earthquake I experienced in California,” Boyce recalled in a recent interview. “The concussion was felt. I literally thought the ground was going to open up and swallow us.” Boyce and her co-workers ran outside to see what had happened. The sight filled her with shock and disbelief: The Pentagon headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense, a symbol of American military power, looked like it had been bombed. “There were emergency sirens coming from every direction,”

Boyce remembered. The sound was eerie. “People were running out of the Pentagon in terror, and at the same time, brave EMS responders were running into the burning building to rescue the trapped and injured.” The Pentagon had an on-site firehouse, which was the first to respond. Firefighters from nearby departments arrived shortly thereafter. Many civilian employees and military personnel evacuated the building immediately after the impact. The city was also ordered evacuated. People were rushing to leave. “No one knew what was going to happen next,” said Boyce. “I had never before been in a country where a war was declared and people were fighting to get out.” She recalled the surreal sight of smoke plumes rising into a beautiful sunny sky. Boyce walked back to her office. Because it was so close to Ground Zero, it too was ordered evacuated. She chose to stay to the end of her shift. Most everyone else left, especially those with children, rushing home to join their family, anxious to see if everyone was okay. “I lost two friends in the Pentagon that day,” Boyce said. “I will never see them again. They took them away from me. They

took thousands, fathers, sons and daughters. That was the biggest loss. They are gone forever.” Everything changed in Washington, she said. Everything changed in America. “We went into command mode,” Boyce recalled. “We were told to move our offices and be up and running within 62 minutes.” The city became strangely empty at mid-day. “It was surreal,” she said. Traffic was jammed due to the evacuation. A 20-minute commute took 1.5 hours. One bright spot that will be forever impressed on her memory of that day is the remarkable comradery among American citizens. “Everyone wanted to help. There was no prejudice, no black or white. Churches were filled with prayers. We all came together for one cause, the cause of the United States of America. It was extraordinary,” said Boyce. Restaurants around Ground Zero were without electricity. They took everything out of their coolers and freezers, cooked huge meals, and shipped them to Ground Zero. Twin towers “I had friends at Ground Zero in New York,” said Boyce. “They said the most difficult thing to deal with was the triage.”

An 8-inch pressurized sewer line burst Sunday, Sept. 4 on Route O in Gravois Mills. The buried sewer line apparently had been installed over a rock outcropping, causing stress to the pipe near a connection point. Remembering 9/11 ceremony planned at American Legion in Sunrise Beach

by Janet Dabbs The American Legion Zack Wheat Post No. 624 will host a 9/11 memorial ceremonial service and parade Sunday, Sept. 11. This is the second 9/11 service the post has hosted, the last one was Sept. 11, 2011. The 9/11 parade will begin 1:30 p.m. at the Laurie Terrace Mall and travel south on Highway 5 to the American Legion post’s outside war memorial in Sunrise Beach. Veterans, police and fire personnel and local elected officials will lead the parade. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the parade by entering their favorite toy, tractor, bike, golf cart, or antique car/truck. The parade will line up at 1 p.m at the mall. The 9/11 memorial ceremony will begin 2 p.m. at the Ameri-

can Legion Zack Wheat Post No. 624 in Sunrise Beach. Post Commander Ken Bishop will open the ceremony. The post color guard will post the colors and present a 21-gun salute. The 9/11 memorial will feature three speakers. Army veteran Terry Zlateff will discuss his service in Iran. Retired Army Brigadier General John E. Seward will speak about the impact of 9/11 and Post Women’s Auxiliary president Jane Boyce will recount her experience working across from the Pentagon, in Washington D.C., Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, when the tragedy occurred. Active service personnel from the Whiteman Air Force Base will conduct a flag folding ceremony and there will be a flyover by an active A-10 War-Hog

Ground Support Aircraft. Afterward, the public is invited to the club room to hear special entertainment by Dave Dunklee. Dunklee helps military veterans cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder through a non-profit organization he founded called the Healing Box Project where they buy guitars to give to disabled veterans free of charge. To date, they have given away approximately 80 guitars. Dunklee, who has a Master’s Degree in Music from the University of MissouriColumbia, also teaches free guitar lessons to veterans. “Please come help us to remember and honor all of our fellow Americans, who lost their lives on 9/11,” Boyce said. For more information, call post member Tom Hohnecker at 913-488-4580.

People were coming in to help from all over the country, she said. Medical students set up triage stations in back alleys and garages, waiting for survivors who never came. A sound forever etched in the minds of witnesses is the chirping of pagers belonging to the firemen buried under the rubble. “The only problem was, there were so many you didn’t know where to dig first,” Boyce said. Among those who lost their life that day in New York were 411 first responders, including 343 firefighters. They died rushing to the aid of others. There were 75 firehouses that lost at least one firefighter. “People knew it was bad,” said Boyce. “But unless you went down there, you did not see the full impact of what these people did to us.” “Everywhere you looked, loved ones were desperately seeking their lost family member,” she said. “It brought tears to your eyes. Many were never found. Many were vaporized.” Firefighters, paramedics, and police officers from across the country flooded to Ground Zero and were put on waiting lists to fill in for local units that had lost so many of their own. They didn’t wait to be asked. They just came. “Our switchboards were in-

undated with calls,” said Boyce. “All they got was a brief description of their duties, and they swiftly set to work, tirelessly, some working multiple shifts in horrific conditions, extinguishing fires, clearing debris and searching for survivors.” At the time of the attack, renovations at the Pentagon were almost complete. Now they had to rebuild. “It was completed early and under budget, which is something you seldom see in the government,” Boyce quipped. “Those guys were there to serve, and they wanted it done so their kids could be protected.” Many workers didn’t turn in overtime requests. War had been declared and the reaction of the people was phenomenal and uplifting, said Boyce. “(Al Qaeda was) trying to cripple our finances,” she said. “The fact that we were able to open the stock exchange within a week in the old building, gives you an idea of American tenacity and grit, and how hard they wanted life to get back to normal.” “Our military response was immediate and appropriate and it is what the people wanted and needed,” Boyce added. “As the war drew on, people became war-weary and thought it not as inappropriate.

“Some people don’t think we will be attacked like that again. I disagree. It is not if; it is when. What is happening in Europe is a test to see what they can get away with.” Boyce said for weeks afterwards there were demonstrations on street corners between the Capitol and the White House. People left flags, banners and flowers on sidewalks. Musicians played, trying to console, to honor and to remember. Boyce is president of the Zack Wheat American Legion Post 624 Women’s Auxiliary in Sunrise Beach. Her husband Tom Boyce served 32 years in the United States Air Force. Boyce said the auxiliary’s purpose is to see that veterans are properly cared for. The auxiliary hosts fundraisers, visits veterans’ homes, assists with the Columbia Honor Flight program, and more. Spouses of veterans interested in joining the Auxiliary can stop by and pick up an application, or visit the post 5 to 7 p.m. any Wednesday or Friday for dinner and discussion. “Membership is vital, as it is very influential when the veteran organizations take on Congress for important legislation and VA concerns,” Boyce said.

by Janet Dabbs A 9/11 Tribute is scheduled 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, following the Laurie Sunrise Beach Rotary Club’s 12th Annual Fall Follies Car Show and car cruise, at the Laurie Park. The rotary club hosts a 9/11 tribute every five years. This is the 15-year anniversary of a terrorist attack the morning of Sept. 11, 2001 when terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes and deliberately crashed two of the planes into the north and south towers of the World Trade Center in New York. A third plane was crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Va. and a fourth plane into an empty field in Pennsylvania. In all, 2,977 people were killed. “The tributes are a way to ensure that we never forget what happened that day,” Car Show Chairman Gene Van De Woestyne said. Matt Sutcliffe, retired Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District volunteer firefighter, is the 9/11 tribute director. He has directed 40 such tributes across the nation, some with nearly 20,000 people in attendance. Actual footage of the airplanes hitting the twin towers will be shown on a big screen as a live 9/11 re-enactment, with emergency personnel, apparatus, sirens, lights and special effects bring to remembrance the horrific events that unfolded 15 years ago. Ten lake-area fire departments, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, three sheriff’s departments, multiple police departments, and

first responders have been invited to participate in the reenactment. “Those of us who are older members of society remember 9/11 like it happened yesterday,” Sutcliffe said. “It was the Pearl Harbor event of our lifetime. We had never experienced an attack like that on American soil. It is very important that we remember the thousands of people that died that day.” Sutcliffe directed a 9/11 reenactment Sept. 11, 2011 in Laurie. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the park,” Van De Woestyne said. “It was profound that there were children there who were not even born when 9/11 occurred,” Sutcliffe remembered. “To them this is a history event that seems far off and unreal. If you were five or six, you knew something terrible had happened, because your parents were very much affected. This is an important educational experience and I hope parents and grandparents will bring their children.” Fireworks show After the 9/11 tribute, there will be a fireworks celebration to honor American men and women who have fought, and who continue to fight, for freedom. “This could happen again in America and we have to educate our young people that freedom is not free,” Sutcliffe ended. Car show The Annual Laurie/Sunrise Beach Fall Follies Car Show will start 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 as hundreds of car enthusiasts converge on the Laurie Park from all over the mid-west.

A police escorted car cruise will start 4 p.m. The parade will cruise from the Laurie Park, along Highway O, turning right on Highway 5, to Highway 135. The cars will then turn around and head south back to the park. The car show awards ceremony is 6 p.m. The car show categories will be split into 24 classes and more than 100 plaques will be awarded to show participants. Fun in the park The beer garden is open from 10 a.m. to close and a delivery beer cart will travel the park dispersing the cold beverages. There will be door prizes and vendors will be on hand for snacks, food and specialty items for both men and women. An engine blow is scheduled 3 p.m. The coolant will be disconnected and an engine revved, until it blows-up. Spectators have a chance to purchase a guess at how long the engine will last, for $5. The closest guess will win 50 percent of the entry fees. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Westlake Aquatic Center and various west side charities. Money donated during the show is tax deductible. Admission to the car show is $5 per person or $10 for a vehicle-load. Registration is open at 7 a.m. for car show participants and breakfast will be served to the public from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. Car show participants may register online at www.lsbrotary.org. For more information, call Gene Van De Woestyne at 573836-2530. In the case of rain, the rain date is Sunday, Sept. 11.

Condos need to be Versailles rural fire preparing fire code compliant Jeep, training facility for use

www.leader-statesman.com

by Janet Dabbs Three Sunrise Beach condominium complexes are working to become compliant with fire codes. The water supply system that services the Westside Bay, Nantucket Bay, and RCR condominium complexes in Sunrise Beach do not currently meet the fire sprinkler flow requirements, as stipulated by the adopted Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District, SBFPD, fire code. The SBFPD board of directors sent a letter to all of the owners in the condominium complexes in July advising them that the water supply system was not up to code. Thursday, Aug. 25, a conference call meeting was conducted with the condominium owners

associations, the TT Water and Sewer Company, the Department of Natural Resources, and all the affected parties to discuss options to becoming compliant. The TT Water and Sewer Company proposed a cost-sharing arrangement, for the second time in one year. Another meeting is scheduled to finalize an answer to the issue. According to SBFPD Fire Chief Dennis Reilly, the code was in effect when the condominiums were constructed. “For safety reasons, they will have to bring the system into compliance with the fire code that was in place when the buildings were constructed,” Reilly said.

The Versailles Rural Fire Ptoectin District board Thursday, Sept. 1 reviewed progress preparing its training facility and a Jeep acquired from the Missouri Department of Conservation for service. At the training facility on Krekel and Washington streets in Versailles, railing and window latches were installed. The only item still needed was to attach rope ties at the top of the tower. Parts to repair the Jeep had arrived. The Jeep would be ready for use once repairs were completed, new tires installed, and the body painted. Fire Chief Troy Nichols re-

ported all fire apparatus maintenance was up to date. The four-wheeler needed a new battery to replace one that would no longer hold a charge. Nichols reported the district responded to six incidents in August, with an average response time of eight minutes. Calls included two medical assist calls, one vehicle accident with injuries, one call to assist an invalid, and two calls canceled en route. The next rural fire board meeting is scheduled 7 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 at the Highway 52 and Route D fire station west of Versailles.

September 7, 1916 A State Fair without amusements would seem incomplete indeed and the Missouri State Fair at Sedalia will lack no such feature. Some of the best acts that have been offered to the people of the state in the way of amusement have been engaged for this year. In addition to the high class acrobatic acts for entertainment between racing events, wholesome shows, ferris wheels, merry-gorounds and other novel features will be running full force on the “zone.” September 3, 1936 On Monday, Sept. 7 the Barnett School Bus No. 1 will leave Barnett west to H.D. is to say, I believe in the people of Versailles. People are what a town really is, undoubtedly. Yes, there are landmarks of architecture; identifying features and landscapes; schools, churches, and businesses; a library, city hall, and police and fire departments. Of course, there are crossroads and map coordinates that pinpoint our village and prove it actually exists where we say it does. Apart from the map coordinates and landscapes, none of the aforementioned associations would exist without the people who made it so. Even then, humans established the navigational norms we now recognize as longitude and latitude. But a place is more than degrees, minutes and seconds in a GPS system. A town has character, soul. It has a past, a current state, and future. It has relinquished dreams and asyet-to-be realized hopes. When I say I believe in Versailles, I am attempting to capture the feeling I have about being a small part of a continuous progression of life and living that has transpired in this particular location. If I wasn’t truly convinced of this concept, my wife and I wouldn’t have made a longterm commitment to purchase our hometown newspaper,

down roots. I know I am not alone in this belief, as evidenced by the recent addition of several businesses whose owners also must have confidence in the ongoing success of our town. In recent months, Versailles has seen the addition of a new Prairie Hills/Katy Trail community health facility; a new performing arts center is nearing completion on the Morgan County R-II school campus; Queen B Naturals opened on Newton Street; a Weight Watchers group is meeting at the county health center; Bee’s Knees Ale House is open for business next to the newspaper office; and, coming soon, is Sugar Mama’s (a bakery adjacent to Square Deals Ice Cream shop, itself a relatively recent venture). Don’t forget the just-opened business office complex near West Vue Shopping Center. I am also aware of other businesses expanding, moving to more visible locations, revamping inventories, updating names, painting signs, remodeling facades, increasing advertising, and more. In addition, there are groups of local citizens who have been, of late, publicly voicing concern that our town be a clean, inviting, well-kept place

Quarterback Nolan Hair threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead Blair Oaks to a 36-0 win over the Versailles Tigers in the Tri-County Conference football opener for both teams Friday, Sept. 2 in Jefferson City. The Falcons move to 3-0 for the season while the Tigers are 1-2. Blair Oaks scored on their first offensive series of the game after forcing the Tigers to punt. Hair capped a 45-yard drive with a one-yard run and Jake Van Ronzelen scored on the twopoint conversion rushing attempt for an 8-0 lead with 9:37 to play in the first quarter. The Falcons increased their lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter when Van Ronzelen scored on a 14-yard run to finish a drive that started at the Tigers 46. Paul Karsten missed on the extra point kick attempt with 8:46 to go in the first half. On their next possession, the Falcons put together a 69-yard drive with Hair throwing a 25yard touchdown pass to Ben Thomas. Van Ronzelen ran in the two-point conversion for a 22-0 lead with 4:35 left in the opening half. The Tigers then drove the ball to the Falcons’ 31-yard line but turned it over on downs and Blair Oaks ran out the clock. Midway through the third quarter, Brenden Brown scored on a five-yard run and then added the two-point conversion to give the Falcons a 30-0 lead with 4:10 left. A 39-yard touchdown pass from Hair to Braydan Pritchett with 9:57 remaining in the game completed the scoring. Tigers head coach Broc Silvers said his team played hard and gave a great effort against a very good opponent, “Our kids showed more fight and more toughness tonight than I have

seen in the four years I’ve been here. I couldn’t be more proud of our kids. I don’t really believe in moral victories, but when you put the right goals in front of them, you’re going to achieve small ones.” The Tigers totaled 112 yards on offense, 57 rushing and 55 passing. Grant Hutchison ran for 56 yards on 16 carries. Quarterback David Connor completed six of 12 passes. Hutchison caught three passes. Taylor Dobbins had two receptions for 39 yards and Quinton Ryerson caught one pass for 10 yards. Connor led the defense with eight tackles while Hutchison was in on seven stops. Shane Randall, Jonathon Geier and Hutchison each had a quarterback sack and Dobbins intercepted his first pass of the year. Blair Oaks gained 238 yards on the ground and 120 through the air. After playing their first three games on the road, the Tigers will host California in the home opener 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9 in Versailles. The Pintos defeated Warsaw, 33-7, last Friday, Sept. 2 in Warsaw for their first win of the season after losses to Monett and Mexico. California won last year’s meeting with Versailles, 42-0. Silvers said California made some changes offensively for Warsaw, “They got out of their spread stuff and ran a whole lot more power at the beginning of the game and then they went back to some spread stuff.” He says the Pintos have a very good quarterback in junior Jacob Wolken, “He’s got a good arm, runs the ball really well. He’s going to be tough to contain for

us.” Silvers said the Pintos defense used a 4-4 look against Warsaw, but may have done so to stop the Warsaw power running game, “So we’ll see if we get the 4-3, a 3-4 or a 4-4, but their linebackers fill really well and their defensive line gets off the ball really hard.” Friday’s game will also have an impact on the district standings. The Tigers are fourth in Class 2 District 4, 1.67 points ahead of the fifth-place Pintos. The top four teams host a first-round playoff game in October, a goal the Tigers have set this season. “If they beat us and we’re ahead (district) points wise, they automatically get to flip over top of us and it might be the difference between hosting a playoff game or going back on the road,” Silvers said. “It might be the difference of us playing at home against them again or playing at their place. There’s a lot of season left, but the way it looks like it’s shaping out is it’s anybody’s game from about the two-three (seed) on back. Our goal has always been to host a playoff game as a three or four seed.”

Stover centenarian to celebrate birthday twice

www.leader-statesman.com

Walter Ehlers of Stover turns 100 years old Thursday, Sept. 8. A birthday celebration is scheduled for him 2 to 3 p.m. that day at the Golden Age Living Center in Stover, where Ehlers is a resident. Cake and punch are to be served. There is also a 100th birthday party planned by his family 1:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at the American Legion hall in Stover. A special program is planned 2 p.m. with a light lunch to follow. Both celebrations are open to the public. Ehlers was born Sept. 8, 1916 on a farm south of Florence, a son of Peter and Anna (Koch) Ehlers. He was the third-oldest of seven children, including a stillborn baby boy. His siblings Arthur, Mathilda (Richardson), Elmer, Alfred, and Richard are all deceased. Walter’s great-great-grandfather Anton Ehlers came from Germany to America in 1845. His great-grandfather Johann Ehlers arrived in 1853. Both settled in the Stover area. Walter Ehlers spoke only German when he started school at age 5 at the Bluhm School south of Florence. An older student named Viola Rasa translated for him until he learned English. For a while he attended the German Lutheran School in Pyrmont. After his confirmation, he returned to Bluhm School, but he missed a lot of lessons while working to help support his family. Ehlers started working young. At age 12, he worked on his great uncle William Stucker’s farm for the first of three summers. He earned $15 a month, which he gave to his parents. Ehlers also skipped school to help his father cut wood with a cross-cut saw. They made 50 to 75 cents a day at this, while also doing chores for other farmers. Walter and his brother Arthur worked a while for Warrencrest Dairy in Sedalia. Later he worked three years at the Liberty Foundry in St. Louis, living with the family of his cousin Edwin Rehmer. Then he worked on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Ehlers married Renata Fischer Dec. 29, 1940 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stover. They moved to Sedalia, where he worked for the railroad, and had their first child Judith. One day, while working on the railroad, Ehlers looked up and saw a freight train bearing down on him and his crew. He yelled, “Jump! All but one of his coworkers was saved. World War II, Ehlers received basic training in engineering at Fort Leonard Wood and mechanical training in Atlanta, Ga. He shipped out June 6, 1943 from Newport News, Va. for foreign service. During his service he visited Africa, Italy, England, Scotland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, and Germany. He helped build roads and bridges for the Allied forces, including one bridge across the Rhine River at Wesel, Germany that was completed in 13 hours, allowing 39,144 jeeps and tanks to cross during a 12-day period. Wounded during the June 6, 1944 D-Day Normandy invasion, Ehlers received a Purple Heart citation. He also received the Naples-Foggia, Normandy, Rhineland, and Central Europe service medals each with bronze stars, a good conduct medal, an M-1 rifle marksman badge, and a national defense ribbon. He got enough points to come home June 6, 1945 and was discharged Oct. 10, 1945, returning home that day. Moving with his family to Kansas City, he worked for General Motors until he bought his farm south of Stover in 1946. He raised dairy cows, pigs, and crops, and combined and baled hay for his neighbors. Later he switched to beef cattle, raised turkeys for Cargill, and for 25 years did surveying work for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. Walter and Renata had two more daughters, Joyce and Rita. They were involved with 4-H for many years. He liked traveling with his wife and hunting and fishing with his brother Richard. Ehlers enjoyed an opportunity to go on the veterans’ honor flight to Washington D.C., a trip he recommends to all veterans. He was also the Missouri State Daughters of the American Revolution January 2012 Patriot of the Month. He recently gave a video interview about his time in World War II, which is filed in the Missouri Archives and the Library of Congress. Ehlers is a member of the Galloway-Martens American Legion Post 343 of Stover and of Grace Lutheran Church in Versailles. His daughters are Judith (Norbert) Schuerman, Joyce (Don) Marriott, and Rita (Steve) Bar-

Laurie Hillbilly Fair: Westside Hillbilly’s

This year’s theme is “Westside Hillbilly’s”. The fair starts with the opening ceremony at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16. I have to say I’m getting real excited about this year’s fair; we have our group of volunteers working real hard to bring fresh and new ideas and also old favorite entertainment! The vendors (crafts, food, & commercial) will open 3 p.m. Friday. In addition to the events people have come to expect and love at the fair, we brought back the backseat drivers contest and tug-a-war games. We will host the Buck-A-Duck races this year sponsored by AOK RV’s. Visitors will enjoy free, live entertainment both days of the fair; both on the main stage and at the Little Beer Garden stage. Bands that will be performing include ‘Money For Nothin,’ JC & The King of Funk, Music by “J’, Davie Ray & Richard, and Classic Rewind Duo. These bands play a variety of music. The king and queen contest selection will be Saturday, Sept. 17 at the main stage. We have some new and exciting things for the contest this year. The parade is on Hwy 5. It will start at Central Bank, proceed north on Hwy. 5 to Fairgrounds Road then enter the fairgrounds. The parade will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. Please come out to see the great parade along the side of Hwy 5. The parade is sponsored by the Sons of American Legion. Hey, Mom and Dad! The children’s contests returns this year. The Kiddie Tractor Pull will start at 10 a.m. Saturday at the main stage for ages 3-12, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The Lil’ Sprouts under 2 years old, Pea Pickers 2-3 years and Lil’ Mr. and Miss Hillbilly 4-6 years contest will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on the main stage, sponsored by Bryant’s Osage Outdoors, Renken Law Firm and Lake West Signs. Lake Bloomer’s Club is giving away plants for kids, and the Thundridge Express train rides for kids in the playground area are back. Sprinkles & Rose Petal, the face painting clowns and their balloon making Buddy will be behind the log cabin. This is a free activity for the kids and sponsored by local banks, organizations and businesses. Hay folks watch for some exciting new things happening around the fairgrounds

Tickets may be purchased now through the fair from all the volunteers. Winners will be drawn 7:45 p.m. Saturday evening. Our T-shirts, and sweatshirts, with the 2016 artwork are also on sale. Our two day-sponsors this year are: Friday Osage Community Elks Lodge #2705, and Lady Elks Auxiliary, and Saturday G2M Supermarket. The $2 parking fee (per car load) has been the only entry cost for our fair for many years. This fee goes to the youth in our community for helping in the parking area for your safety and convenience. Handicap shuttle carts will be running both days. A BIG thank you to all who attend each year. Without you, there would be no fair. We are always looking for new ideas and more volunteers, so if you would like to help please stop by the log cabin and see me. Thank you to my entire great group of volunteers, supporters and sponsors who give numerous hours and funds to all the events. There will be something for everybody. I’m looking forward to seeing you all there. Don’t miss it! Susann Huff Events & Parks Coordinator

Rat Rod Car Show new this year New this year, a Rat Rod Car Show, will be held 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16 and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. Born in the 1950’s, Rat Rod car shows consist of anything you can do to an old rusted car. A mess of em’ have nice shiny motors with terrible bodies. “If you tell me it looks nice… it will be an insult,” Rat Rod Car Show Organizer Buck Burkhart said. All it takes is some imagination, ingenuity and creativity! Shiny chrome and billet don’t mean diddley squat here. Back in the holler, gear heads wanted to go fast and look good, but they couldn’t just git the parts directly from a catalog or online. From Model A’s to Model T Ford’s they are chopped, dropped and best of all raced real fast. Parts are thrown in here and there, all cattywampus and most are legal and insured.

The show will showcase cars from 1920’s to the 1950’s, including Volkswagens, coon dog carryin’ pickups, cars and more. Three trophies will be awarded. “This is a unique car show,” Burkhart said. “You don’t hardly ever see just a Rat Rod Show alone and this is the first for this area.”

Library Bookworm

by Stacey Embry, Director, Morgan County Library

I really enjoyed reading Nick-

els and Sense this last week. It was a cute, funny story with a big dose of praise for the people who work with Bryan. After reading it, I totally understood what he was saying. It is a great source of relief when your staff is good. A great staff brings their leaders peace. There is nothing like “a well oiled machine.” 2016 has been a year of transition for the library. Our staff has changed, our leadership has changed, and, like everyone, our personal lives have evolved; all these areas can be stressful. Since I have been at the helm, I have been so impressed at how my girls have adjusted. New software and new polices have changed what had been our norm. The girls have stepped up. New responsibilities have been given and they have jumped in and preformed beautifully. Seriously, I cannot tell you how many times I have wanted to high five everyone. I get such warm, proud feelings and the old athlete in me feels that high fives are called for. I haven’t done that to them, yet. Three of our four-man staff have moved in the last month. They have still come to work in spite of remodels to prep new homes, updates to meet inspections, and packing for the move day. Not until this last month have they actually had to take time off to complete the final transition of their move. The funny thing is while I was worrying about them they were wor-

about finding some volunteers who want to help decorate for holidays and special events. But the best part of volunteering isn’t what relief it will bring us, it is making our community feel a bond with the library. I hope our volunteers will get warm, proud feelings and they won’t be able to stop themselves from giving out high fives. With our volunteers, we hope to continue to grow and change to better meet our community’s needs. We will never be a perfect library. We will make mistakes and probably will never be quiet; but, as of now, I am proud of the people I work with. They are a strong, reliable group of ladies who will go out of their way to help those they work with and those that they serve. For more information, visit the Morgan County Library, 600 N. Hunter, in Versailles, call 573378-5319; or see the library’s website at morgancountylibrary. org. Library hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday.

rying about me. When they finished their moves they rewarded me with a six pack of my favorite beverage and some snacks to go with. Yep, they are pretty great. When someone is gone we become “short-staffed.” This means we all need to be out front. Our typical responsibilities still must be met, but don’t run as smoothly as when we are a full staff. Lunches must be staggered with the last person eating at 1:30 or 2 p.m. Short-staffed makes for a “different” day. For the last month, “different” has almost become the norm. My girls get the job done, but I know it wears on them. In the past few months, I have been talking about getting volunteers for the library. We have received a good number of applications and are excited about getting started. We will be having a brief meeting with our applicants 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7. October will be our official start month. Our smaller staff is excited about getting help with shelving and shelf reading. I am excited
