Sharon “Kay” Thouvenel

Sharon “Kay” Thouvenel, age 73, of Versailles, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City. Kay was born December 27, 1942, in Versailles, the second child of Henry and Mildred Marple Marriott, who preceded her in death. She was a 1961 graduate of Versailles High School. Following graduation Kay went to work at the Kansas City Bifocal Plant in Versailles where she met Cloyd R. “Slim” Thouvenel. This workplace encounter led to a courtship, and their marriage, which took place on September 7, 1963, at the First Baptist Church in Versailles. Cloyd preceded her in death on April 27, 2005. Kay was a homemaker, busy raising her three children and helping Cloyd on their farm. After raising her family she worked at Timberline Greenhouse in Versailles for several years during the summer months. She was a faithful member of the First Christian Church in Versailles, where she attended Sunday school and looked forward to the Wednesday night dinners. Kay loved being on the farm and had a green thumb when it came to raising flowers. Every year she grew beautiful roses and impatiens. Her flower pots lined the front of her house. Kay also loved hummingbirds. She hung feeders outside her front picture window, and she stayed busy keeping them filled up for the birds. She would often talk about how many birds she had that day and how many times she had to fill her feeders in a single day. Kay also loved watching basketball, especially the Mizzou men’s team. She would often confirm game times with her sister Mickey or son-in-law Scott to make sure not to miss a game. She looked forward to March Madness completing her bracket, as she did this year as well. She even had an old “Dream Team” calendar hanging in her family room, which she named “the football room” because of all the Sunday afternoon football games the grandkids watched in that room. Kay was well known by family and friends for being a great cook. For family gatherings, she was always asked to make her made from scratch chocolate chip cookies and famous homemade macaroni and cheese, of which she usually made a double batch. Kay’s greatest enjoyment came from being with her grandkids who all called her Gammy, as did many others who were closest to her. Whether it was fixing a family meal for all to enjoy or cheering on her grandchildren in their sporting activities at school, she made sure they knew how important they were to her. Even with children that were outside of her own family, you could almost bet Kay could tell you their birth month and eye color. She had such a special bond with so many people. Survivors include her three children, Krista Wilson and husband Scott of Fortuna; Karna Thouvenel of Versailles and boyfriend, Jason Cross of Fair Grove, and Garrett Thouvenel and wife Aubree of Versailles; five sisters, Lois Jean “Jeanie” Woods of Versailles; Doris Jane “Mickey” Hoskins and husband Tom of Henley; Linda Marie Wolfe and husband Terry of Lake Ozark; Frances “Diane” Hibdon of Blue Springs, and Barbara Lynn Karigan and husband Bob of Overland Park, Kansas; ten grandchildren, Kaden, Kooper, and Kannen Wilson, Kylie, Kole, and Luke Cloyd Viebrock, Maycee Lynn and Jaydee Kay Thouvenel, and Tristin and Garrett Cross, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at the First Christian Church in Versailles with Rev. John Wagner and Rev. Adam Schetzler officiating. The organist was Margaret Fritz. Kyle Woods sang a medley of “Amazing Grace” and “His Eyes on the Sparrow.” The prerecorded music was “The Lighthouse Song” by Glenn White and David White and “Mansion on the Hill” by Jeanie Woods, Kay Thouvenel, and Mildred Marriott. Interment was in the Oak Park Addition of the Versailles Cemetery. Kaden Wilson, Kooper Wilson, Scott Wilson, Jason Cross, Garrett Thouvenel, and Kylie Viebrock served as pallbearers. Kannen Wilson, Kole Viebrock, Luke Cloyd Viebrock, Maycee Lynn Thouvenel, Jaydee Kay Thouvenel, Tristin Cross, and Garrett Cross were honorary pallbearers. The family received friends from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Versailles.
