Rural fire board considers wind alerts and buys truck The Versailles Rural Fire Protection District board Thursday, March 3 discussed the purchase of a fire truck and possible ways to alert the public when weather conditions pose a fire risk. A used GMC fire truck was purchased last month from the Moreau Fire Department for $4,900. It replaces Tanker 31. The board discussed different strategies to alert the public when the National Weather Service issues a wind advisory. High winds can cause even small fires to spread quickly. Since board president Jim Dykzeul was not present, the topic was tabled. Fire Chief Troy Nichols reported all maintenance and repairs to fire vehicles and equipment are up to date.

Completion of the district’s training facility remained on hold. Nichols said he was still awaiting a second bid for bunker gear. The district responded to 16 incidents in February, with an average response time of 9.07 minutes per incident. These calls included one building fire, one fire in portable property, six natural cover fires, one outside rubbish fire, one dumpster fire, one rescue/ emerergency medical call, three medical assist calls, one good intent call, and one authorized controlled burn. The next rural fire board meeting is scheduled 7 a.m. Thursday, April 7 at the fire station at Highway 52 and Route D outside Versailles.
