Casey’s store is expanding

Casey’s General Store in Versailles is undergoing a renovation and expansion. The project will add approximately 600 square feet of space on the east end of the store and will include a walk-in beer cave, a submarine sandwich bar, and a larger coffee and fountain-drink area. A smaller addition on the west side will expand cold storage for the facility but will not be accessible to the public. Williams Construction of Springfield is the general contractor. Supervisor Levi Trantham said the project is slated to take 10 weeks for completion. (photo by Bryan E. Jones) A renovation already underway will add approximately 600 square feet to Casey’s General Store in Versailles. Sam James, director of finance of the Ankeny, Iowa based convenience store chain explained the project in a Thursday, Dec. 15 telephone interview.

James said the company plans to build a 15-by-40-foot addition to the east side of the building. Inside, the store will expand its number of cooler doors, allowing it to offer a greater selection and larger sizes of packaged drinks. There will also be a walk-in

beer cave, a submarine sandwich bar, and a larger coffee and fountain-drink area. “The store will also get new floors, signage, and countertops,” said James, “plus a complete remodel of its restrooms.” He added the store will remain open throughout the remodel,

except during the last four days before it re-opens. The expected completion date is in early March. The Versailles store is one of approximately 100 Casey’s General Stores slated to receive a similar facelift this year. It is part of a company-wide program originally intended to target approximately 900 stores, though some of these stores did not fit the program’s criteria, such as having sufficient property available for expansion. James estimated the companywide program is about halfway complete, with 364 renovations completed as of the end of November. “We’ve had this major remodeling program going for roughly five years now,” he said. One of the completed renovations was at the Casey’s General Store in Stover, which re-opened in its new configuration Thursday, March 17. James noted a likelihood the renovation would result in more employment at the Versailles store. Typically, he said, a renovated store will add a few full-timeequivalent employees, particularly to operate the new submarine sandwich bar and a larger store in general. There are approximately 1,950 Casey’s General Stores in 14 Midwestern states.

Flue fire in Gravois home is close call

by Janet Dabbs The Gravois Fire Protection District responded to a flue fire 3:02 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17 at 310 Dunwurkin Road in Gravois Mills. Upon arrival, firefighters found the home owner had the flue fire under control. According to Gravois Arm Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Ron Anselmo, flue fires start due to a build-up of creosote inside of the flue. Firefighters checked for an extension of the fire to the structure by using a thermal imaging camera on the flue and surrounding walls. The camera picks up extra heat and

reveals fire behind the wall by reporting the temperatures inside the wall. No additional fire was found. Firefighters also checked for cracks in the fireplace. According to Anselmo, the homeowner took the fire out of the fire box and knocked the flue fire down into the fireplace. He then used a chain to clear build up in the flue. There was no damage or injuries as a result of this fire. Anselmo advises, “If you are experiencing a flue fire, call 911 and close all dampers so it doesn’t get air. A fire won’t burn unless it has oxygen.” The GFPD responded with

four units and four personnel. “Creosote is caused by using green wood and newspaper, restricted air supply and cooler than normal surface temperatures in the flue (such as with a metal chimney),” Anselmo said. Newspaper can also cause a fire by flying up into the flue and igniting the creosote. He advises homeowners to keep their chimney clean and use wood that is seasoned for six months to one year. Professional services can be hired. Gravois FPD firefighters also responded to five automobile accidents caused by icy road conditions Friday, Dec. 16.

Rocky Mount fire district responds to 10 accidents by Janet Dabbs The Rocky Mount Fire Protection District responded to 10 car accidents Friday, Dec. 16, when the lake area was hit by an un-forecasted ice storm. Fire Chief Kevin Hurtibise said personnel responded to eight car crashes on Route Y and two on W. “These two roads are hilly and they were icy, and everyone got out and tried to drive on them,” Hurtibise said. To add to the problem, the district’s roads are maintained and salted by two different road crews, one from Eldon and the other from Versailles. Neither company knew how bad the

roads were going to be, so salt had not been applied, Hurtibise said. Once the snow trucks from Versailles road district arrived, they were unable to move on the icy roads. District personnel assisted the crews by putting chains on their tires. Hurtibise reported one incident of property damage and no injuries resulting from the accidents. “We mostly were working to direct traffic to stay out of the area,” he said. No traction on ice Hurtibise explained even four-wheel drive vehicles do not have traction on ice.

“You can get a little traction on snow, and a four-wheel drive will give you little extra going forward,” he said, “but when it comes time to stop, you will have four tires sliding on the ice.” Hurtibise advised travelers to check road conditions at www. modot.org before driving. “Use your eyes,” he said. “If there is ice on sidewalks or on your car, then there is ice on the roads.” The RMFPD responded to the Friday’s accidents with a seven firefighters. They also responded to mutual aid requests from Moniteau Fire District.

Students in Debbie Spears’ Skills for Adolescence class at Versailles Middle School Monday, Dec. 19 show off cookbooks they made. Spears said, “The family unit is very important. Passing on the recipes from one generation to another is one way to continue the traditions.” Each student received six blank recipe forms (including appetizers, salads, side dishes, main dishes, desserts, and others) to be filled out by a family member. All of the recipes brought in were copied and students created covers. Displaying their cookbooks are, front from left, Michael Masters, Kobie O’Rourke, Madison Kirby, Tye Edgar, Cage Pritchett, Dakota Chambers, Brady Hendrix, William Taylor, Justin Steinke, back from left, Haley Suttmoller, Destiny Armstrong, Andrew Cutt, Ella Dunklee, Kierra O’Rourke, Madison Foley, Tyson Drury, and Jack Clark. Fleet upgrade in the works

Mid-Mo to remount more ambulances by Becky Holloway In a plan to upgrade its ambulances without purchasing costly new vehicles, the Mid-Mo Ambulance District Board voted during its meeting Wednesday, Dec. 14 to remount three more boxes on new chassis. Blake Clifton of American Response Vehicles submitted the proposal to do the project during the course of the next two years at a total cost of $334,438. The district recently had one ambulance remounted with ARV to extend the life of the vehicle. Mid-Mo Administrator Lee Kempf said, when looking at the fleet and the mileage on the vehicles, he feels this is the most economical way to bring the entire fleet up to where it needs to be to best serve the district. He suggested remounting Unit 2 after the first of the year, and following up with Units 6 and 8 during the next 15 months. All will be put on 2016 model frames. Kempf said the cost to purchase three new vehicles next year would be in the neighbor-

hood of $600,000, and additional cost would be required to change out the cots because the mounting hardware will be different. The board also voted to purchase a mechanical cardiopulmonary resuscitation device in the amount of $9,990. The ROSC-U from Bound Tree Medical is a miniature chest compressor that will be used to convert patients in full heart attack mode. Kempf said although they work wonderfully when stationary, the autopulse boards currently in use sometimes fail when a patient is being moved. He recommended the ROSC-U be tried out because it can be used when a patient is being moved in a seated position such is the case when using the stairlifters. Kempf gave an update about the construction of the new base building at California. The gas lines have been installed and the sewer will be hooked up soon. A problem with the floor finish bubbling will be rectified, and a few other things that he and board president Earl Reuter no-

ticed on their walk-through will also be addressed. He had hoped the project would be completed before the end of the year, but he said now it looks like February. The board reviewed write-offs by the office in the amount of $1,336.83, and approved writing off $35,078.38 in other bad debt. Kempf presented an idea born out of a meeting between him and Jason Elliott, supervisor and instructor, with representatives from Rolla Technical Institute about the school’s paramedic program which they both felt is superior to other programs in the area. Kempf said in order to recruit paramedics from within the district and to allow current emergency medical technicians to advance in their field, the district must provide some cost share incentive. The district currently reimburses $4,000, once a student is a paramedic, in quarterly payments over two years of full-time employment with the district. In the discussion about the Rolla program, it was suggested

the district might consider paying a Mid-Mo employee’s $9,624 tuition or their student loans over a three-year period once they have completed the paramedic program. The board agreed it would like to see a written policy that would include a contract with employees/students, one of whom plans to start the program in January and another has expressed interest. The district plans to offer another EMT class in March, to be taught at Tipton. A class was held in Versailles last fall. Run statistics in November were presented as follows: Tipton, 50 calls with 28 transports; California, 64 calls and 36 transports; and Versailles, 176 calls and 125 transports. Districtwide, there were 290 calls with 189 transports, for a transport rate on patient contact calls of 72.8 percent. The board’s next meeting is scheduled 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the district office in Tipton.

Christmas spirit alive and well in Versailles It’s easy to become jaded and cynical in this world. Every day there seems to be horrible news: a truck drives into a crowded market killing people, a train derails, refugee evacuation busses are targeted by terrorists, a Russian ambassador is assassinated, a soccer team’s plane crashes. I could go on with things closer to home, but we are all affected in some way or another by these events. It seems, sadly, one has to often search just to find the good side of humanity. Only this week, though, I was reminded of the generous hearts, gracious minds, and helping hands many in this community have toward their fellow human beings. I experienced renewed hope that people haven’t forgotten the true meaning of Christmas and of spreading goodwill. To use a personal example, my wife and I, after a particularly tiring day, were having dinner at a local restaurant in Versailles.

Another couple, after finishing their meal in a different part of the restaurant, came to our table on their way out and we had a brief, pleasant conversation. A few moments later, we found out the couple had paid our tab. That was unexpected, humbling, and much appreciated. Thank you. Another example of creative and heartfelt giving was reported by Versailles Elementary School principal Kim Murdock at the school board meeting Monday night. She said the elementary school has had a few “Secret Santas” around spreading Christmas cheer and paying lunch accounts. Apparently, two different couples combined to pay off outstanding balances on students’ lunch accounts. An outstanding balance is defined as a student account in arrears by $8 or more. The total paid to “zero out” these accounts was $1,242. When I heard about this happening, I thought what a good

idea it was. That’s looking for ways to help that usually nobody else even thinks about. It was thoughtful, generous, and very much needed. Paying off those accounts was not just meeting a need when it was seen, it was finding a need to meet. Hat’s off to those couples. May it inspire all of us. One big example of Christmas spirit in action, of course, is the annual Morgan County Caring for Kids Coalition Christmas for Kids event. I am forever impressed by the good this organization does in the community, both through their back-to-school fair and their Christmas distribution. They make a difference in the lives of many, many children. Support them. Volunteer. Give. These are just a few tangible ways I have seen the good people of Versailles reach out this Christmas. I hope we all catch the spirit. Merry Christmas!

December 21, 1916 The Statesman has mentioned during the last two weeks the serious illness of T. R. Townley, 77, due to blood poisoning rising from a slight wound on the left foot. Last Friday, Mr. Townley consented to having his leg taken off above the knee, which was done by Drs. Gregg and Jack Gunn. Mr. Townley stood the operation well and is recuperating nicely. If no other complications arise, the doctors think he will get well. December 17, 1936 Preston McDaniel of Fortuna won high individual scoring honors in the annual intramural University of Collegiate dairy judging contest in which 69 students participated. He also scored highest in judging jerseys. In recognition of this honor, he was presented a gold medal by the Missouri State Dairy Association. Preston is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. McDaniel of Fortuna. The Ozark Central Telephone

Company just completed laying 3-1/2 blocks of underground cable this week near the Gateway Lodge. December 21, 1956 The Rev. and Mrs. P. P. Hilty, northeast of Versailles, will observer their 50th wedding anniversary at the Bethel Mennonite church Thursday, Dec. 27. The public is invited to a program beginning 2 p.m. and an open house in the church basement from 3 to 5 p.m. They request no gifts be brought. The National Chapter, American Red Cross, has asked the Morgan County Chapter for a contribution to the Hungarian Relief Fund now being raised. Since the request was for a very nominal amount, $200, the chapter does not plan a solicitation campaign. December 16, 1976 Cases of rubeola or “hard measles” have been reported in four counties near Morgan County, according to Helen Bolton, county health nurse. No cases

of rubeola have been reported in Morgan County, but cases have been reported in Laclede, Pulaski, Camden, and Pettis counties. Mrs. Bolton said rubeola is known by other names such as hard measles, red measles, oldfashioned measles, and 14-day measles. Rubeola should not be confused with rubella, the threeday or “German” variety, Mrs. Bolton warns. December 19, 1996 A once productive restaurant was dismantled this fall, taking with it 38 years of memories for the residents of Gravois Mills. The restaurant was originally built in 1953 by Grady and Merle Nash across the highway where the present day Bread Basket stands. The couple also owned the Hickory Pit 2 in Sedalia and a catfish restaurant in Gravois Mills. In the summer of 1963, the original Hickory Pit was destroyed by fire when a worker fell asleep tending the pit, the Nashs’ daughter Margo Dawson said.

Library Bookworm

by Stacey Embry, Director, Morgan County Library This week, I want to share what’s been going on at the library. I share big events weekly, but this week I want to concentrate on the little moments. Wednesday, we had our first youth book discussion. We had one young lady show up 30 minutes before we were supposed to start, a sharp contrast with the other young lady we grabbed off the computer. I love that both girls came to our book discussion on totally different paths; that variety is what makes book discussion so great. Two totally different girls, we discovered share a love for one author, Mary Downing Hahn. It was so fun to listen to their excitement about the different books they like. It was equally interesting to hear about the books they did not enjoy. Pre-teens are making a transition. They want to be their own people. Sometimes that means they might not be receptive to what their parents or teachers (read “old” people) want them to read. With that said, sometimes they are pleasantly surprised. So, don’t despair “old” people. Sometimes we come from different paths, but can still find common ground.

Wednesday night, we had our first evening story time. December is a busy month. It has been a little chilly this week and it is the first time we have tried this. Yep, I was a little worried. We had a really good turnout! Some of the people who will be involved with our future evening story times attended along with a few families. There was a total of seven children; not bad for our first event! The children decorated Christmas cookies, which was probably my favorite part of the night. There is joy in watching little ones with icing and sprinkles, especially when they are not your child. I am starting to understand the “grandparent” thing: have fun with them and send them home, messy and full of sugar. A few weeks back, Berenice and the staff built a beautiful cardboard playhouse. I wish I had a counter on the door so I knew how much it has been used. The kids have loved it. We clean it out every night because it usually has a chair in it and a pile of books. We love it! It will be sad to see it go, as cardboard does not last forever; but don’t fear, we have something equally great to replace it with. Stay tuned. Seriously, who knew how great puzzles where going to be?

We have various families that have made it part of their week to come in to work on the puzzle. We have people who just randomly stop at the table and, next thing you know, they have been working on it for an hour. I saw a caregiver and a former student of mine work on one of our puzzles together, probably the sweetest thing I have seen all week. We also created an area to do coloring pages last week. They are taking off just like the puzzles did! We have people coming to the library just to color. We have people starting a page and taking them home to finish them. These little moments are sweet. These little moments are progress. I mentioned a few weeks back that we are trying to be a great library. It is going to take time and we have more things to try, more things to learn; but after this week, I know we will make it. For more information, visit the Morgan County Library, 600 N. Hunter, in Versailles, call 573378-5319; or see the library’s website at morgancountylibrary. org. Library hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday. The library will be closed Christmas Eve, Saturday, Dec. 24.

by Janet Dabbs Sunrise Beach Police Chief David Slavens has advised extreme caution when driving through Sunrise Beach, due to a marked increase in auto crashes caused by deer in the village. In one week alone, Slavens said, his office responded to eight vehicle-deer collisions. “That is not even counting the number of deer carcasses up and down the highway,” he said. “Multiple other accidents involving deer have not even been reported, and many times, after a deer is hit by a car, they run into the woods.” He said he didn’t know if there are more deer this year, compared to years past. “Deer-vehicle accidents certainly are elevated,” he said. Too many deer? According to Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) media specialist Robert Hemmelgarn, statewide deer population changes tend to be gradual. In recent years, statewide deer population estimates have declined slightly, though population trends vary between regions of the state. Hemmelgarn said local increases in vehicle-deer collisions may be a reflection of increased urban development and human population growth. As cities grow and the urbanrural interface expands outward from urban centers, new roads are built through areas where deer dwell. Further, Hemmelgarn said, as the human population density

increases, existing roads carry more traffic. Both these factors increase the chances of vehicles encountering deer. In much of southern Missouri, the deer population has been stable to slowly increasing, but remains well below social carrying capacity, Hemmelgarn said. Carrying capacity is the maximum number of animals that can live in an area without exhausting local resources. Hemmelgarn said the MDC plans to continue managing the deer population “to maintain the population within acceptable levels and provide additional recreational opportunities.” MDC Spokesperson Lucas Bond said there are two million deer statewide. He added there are increases in deer activity during deer season in November and December, and during the late breeding season from late December to early January. Bond said early morning and dusk are the peak times for deer activity. “We encourage drivers to be careful and safe, and to be extra aware of their surroundings, as does are being chased by bucks and their movements are sporadic,” he said. Prime time for deer Slavens advised motorists to drive 10 mph slower during high activity periods and in areas where deer have been known to cross the road. A slight increase in deerinvolved crashes noted in the spring months may result from yearling fawns separating from

Sunrise Beach: Deer cause eight crashes in a week their mothers just before the newborns arrive. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, traffic safety authorities have expressed concern in recent years over both animal-vehicle crashes involving deer and crashes caused by drivers avoiding deer on the road. A 2011 study of deer-involved traffic crashes on Missouri’s highways found the following: • Missouri had 3,563 traffic crashes in 2011 that started with deer-vehicle strikes. • One deer strike occurred every 2.5 hours statewide in 2011. • Four people were killed and 376 injured in these crashes, averaging to one person killed or injured every 23.1 hours. • Of these deer-strike traffic crashes, 26.7 percent occurred in an urban area, and 73.3 percent in a rural area. • Although rural areas seem over-represented, the seven Missouri counties with the most frequent deer-vehicle crashes are associated with major metropolitan areas. Deer-strike traffic crashes in these counties accounted for 31.7 percent of the total. • Four out of five, or 82.7 percent, of the 2011 deer strike crashes occurred on state-maintained roadways. • More than half, or 51.2 percent, of the 2011 deer-strike crashes occurred from October through December, with the highest number in November (25 percent). • Most deer-strike crashes (85.2 percent) occurred from 5 p.m. through 6:59 a.m.

2015-2016 deer harvest The 2015-2016 deer harvest of 274,447 deer was a seven-percent increase from 2014-15 and a three-percent decrease from the 10-year average. Deer populations have decreased in many central, northern, and western Missouri counties in recent years, due to liberal antlerless permit availability, severe hemorrhagic disease outbreaks, and changes in habitat availability. Although reducing deer population was once a goal for much of Missouri, deer numbers have now dipped below carrying capacity. In response to this population trend, MDC reduced the number of antlerless permits available in each county to one or two throughout much of the state, beginning in 2014. These changes resulted in a decrease in does harvested during the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 hunting seasons. The doe harvest in 2015 was eight percent higher than 2014, but four percent lower than the five-year average and 10 percent lower than the 10-year average. Moreover, 2014 was the first time in more than 10 years the buck harvest exceeded the doe harvest, a trend that continued in 2015, when 2,284 more bucks were harvested than does. Deer populations are likely to fluctuate due to many other factors, including disease outbreaks and habitat conditions. Nevertheless, this reduction in the doe harvest may help to stabilize deer numbers where desired.

The Grow and Glow Garden Club met Tuesday, Dec. 13 in Sedalia at the Ivory Grill Restaurant’s Palm Room for their Christmas luncheon. Chaplain Twila Garber gave the blessing prior to the meal. When the meal concluded. club president Linda Dahl led the business meeting, opening with the roll call, “A Favorite Family Christmas Tradition.” JoAnn Collier, youth chair, reported the local poetry contest is complete, and prizes were presented at the Tipton school’s Cardinal Chatter assembly to 20 students. The poems have been sent to the state level for judging. Kendra Johnson gave the results of the club survey regarding trees to be ordered from the Missouri Conservation Commission. The members are encouraged to plant trees, which is a goal of the FGCM president, Nancy Bahn. The trees will also be given to interested patrons at the club’s plant sale fundraiser in May. Three hundred trees will be ordered and distributed under the

leadership of Johnson and Dorothy Collett. Steve Henshaw was commended on the poinsettias at the Tipton City Park Christmas display. The slate of officers for the new biennium was installed. Officers are: Kendra Johnson, president; Barbara Harrison, first vice president; Barbara Tavener, second vice president/parliamentarian; Charleen Meyer, third vice president; JoAnn Collier, secretary/reporter; Arlene Stayton, treasurer; Micki Williams, historian; Twila Garber, chaplain; and Linda Reid, press book. The hostesses for the day, Sue Prestage and Dala Yontz, made arrangements for the meal and organized the gift exchange. The gifts were exchanged before adjourning to the Bothwell Hotel lobby for a keepsake photo. The January meeting is scheduled Tuesday, Jan. 17 at the Community Room of the CoMo Rural Electric Cooperative in Tipton. Rotary transfers ownership of pool Westlake Aquatic Center Chair Lori Johnson accepted the transfer of ownership of the lake area’s only indoor, yeararound junior Olympic pool from Laurie-Sunrise Beach Rotary President Gene Van De Woestyne at a special ceremony Tuesday, Dec. 13 at the pool building at Fairgrounds Park in Laurie. The pool, which was built by the Rotary organization more than a decade ago, serves all lake-area residents, but especially senior citizens by offering a variety of 23 fitness and wellness classes each week, including water aerobics, arthritis, and water walking. The pool also offers water workouts, swimming lessons, free swims and lap swimming. All classes and sessions are free to pool members. The pool also serves the community by providing space

for private rehabilitation sessions, lifeguard training and water safety training for local fire rescue departments, and birthday parties. The WAC pool is the home of the Trident Swim Team, and is the practice pool for the Camdenton High School swim teams. Every month, Morgan County Health Center staff comes to the pool lobby to provide blood pressure checks and glucose monitoring, as well as offering flu shots and nutritional counseling. Westlake Aquatic Center is a not-for-profit organization and can receive tax-deductible donations.
