Construction of an additional vehicle bay at Fire Station 2 was completed, Fire Chief Jim Witte reported Friday, Dec. 9 to the Stover Rural Fire Protection District board. Witte presented a memorandum from Assistant Fire Chief Paul Harrison, noting the erection of the steel-frame structure was completed in one day, Wednesday, Dec 7, following curing of the concrete foundation and apron. Harrison’s memo noted the final construction costs totaled $27,114.27, which was $827.27 less than the original quotes, and a lease-purchase agreement for the building’s cost between the Stover Rural Fire Department and the district was forthcoming. Harrison also reported equipment has been rearranged within Station 2. Installation of electrical wiring and heating, not included in the construction quotes, still needed to be done. Chief’s report Witte reported the district responded to 13 emergency calls in November, bringing their 2016 call total to 108. There were also 108 calls during the same period last year. November’s fire calls included five natural cover fires in the district and one mutual-aid natural cover fire; one alarm call for a smoke investigation, which was canceled en route; two motor vehicle crashes; and four medical assist calls, one of which involved establishing a landing zone for a medical helicopter. Witte reported 21 firefighters attended a joint training session Monday, Nov. 7 at district

headquarters in Stover. Personnel were fitted for new structure fire boots, and reviewed engine hydrant operations. There were 15 firefighters who participated in Monday, Nov. 21 training sessions. Personnel from Stations 1 and 3 had joint instruction about searches with self-contained breathing apparatus. Station 2 worked on wildland fire preparation. Other business Treasurer Larry Witte reported the district’s November receipts totaled $15,084.02, including tax revenues from Morgan and Benton counties. Expenditures totaled $2,494.91. Balances were $15,435.96 in checking, $40,193.90 in a money market, and $10,268.08 in a CD. Jim Witte reported the new structure fire boots were delivered Thursday, Dec. 8 via UPS, and would probably be distributed to firefighters at their next training session. The board discussed a preliminary budget planning worksheet for the district’s 2017 budget. It was noted the district’s projected tax revenue for 2017 was $97,094, down from last year’s revenue projection of $100,278. The board also discussed filing for April 4, 2017 elections for three district directors, two with six-year terms and one for a four-year unexpired term. There was also discussion on what the board could learn from a recent Sunshine Law review by the State Auditor’s office. The next Stover fire board meeting is scheduled 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2017 at the district office in Stover.

Children in Morgan County will now be able to get free multi-vitamin supplements, thanks to the new program provided by Laurie Family Pharmacy in Laurie. The Vitamin Club is free to children age 2 and older. To join the program, parents or guardians simply complete an enrollment form for their children at Laurie Family Pharmacy. Once the form is completed, participants will receive a Vitamin Club card. Each month, parents or guardians will use the Vitamin Club card to pick up a month’s supply of vitamins for each child. The cards are “kid friendly” and are designed to involve children in the process. Each month, the card will be punched to show usage and progress. Pharmacist Dan Cerra said he saw the need in Morgan County and wants to help people be proactive in fending off recurring illnesses, helping children stay strong and healthy, and promoting healthy habits. “Few things are as important as the health of your child,” Cerra said. “Vitamins play a key role in ensuring your child remains healthy. Receiving the proper level of vitamins on a

daily basis promotes growth, protects against some diseases, aids in development, and provides proper metabolism.” The chewable vitamins are funded through Cerra’s pharmacy and come in 30-count bottles. One bottle is a month’s supply for a child four years old and older. Children 2 to 3 years old will use only half a tablet. Cerra suggests following the dosage according to the vitamin label and keeping vitamins out of reach of small children. “Especially for those families with picky eaters, a daily multivitamin that is formulated specifically for children can help fill in the gaps of a not-so-great diet,” Cerra said. “The goal of our Vitamin Club program is to help children stay healthy and strong, while teaching them to understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle.” Depending upon the demand for the vitamins, especially from child care centers, Cerra said he would consider making limited deliveries at select locations. Laurie Family Pharmacy is at 154 S. Main St. in Laurie. For more information, call 573-2070805.

NR.otes of Interest D. F by ish It’s homecoming week at Stover High School. Everywhere high school sports are played, it’s a week full of fun ways for students to show school spirit. When I was in high school, homecoming was usually a football phenomenon, and showing school spirit meant braving nose-numbing weather, and the thrill of sitting on ice-cold aluminum risers. School spirit in Stover is a much more comfortable commodity. The risers are wooden, the basketball court is in a heated gymnasium. If they perform, the band kids don’t have to march, saving their breath for their horns. When the homecoming king and queen are crowned, they won’t necessarily get mud on their evening wear. There are a lot of ways Stover can show its spirit this year. They’re not limited to the sidelines of a basektball game, or even daily dress codes such as Monday’s pajama day and Wednesday’s ugly sweater day. You can support Project Prom,

ensuring a safe night of fun for those attending the 2017 junior/ senior prom, by buying spuds and tacos at the concession stand 5 to 7 p.m. homecoming night, Friday, Dec. 16. The Parent Teacher Organization shows its spirit this week by providing a Christmas store, where Stover Elementary School students can choose stockingstuffers for their parents. Morgan County R-I staff, students, parents, and community patrons show their spirit this Wednesday evening with the school’s annual food, clothing, shoes, and toy giveaway, assisting families whose children attend MCR-I in having a merry Christmas. The community has an opportunity to attend the MCR-I winter concert 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15. It would show some good spirit to honor the courage and hard work of everyone who is prepared to perform. Saturday, Dec. 17, the MCRI robotics club is scheduled to compete at a FIRST Technical

December 11, 1936 A lost hog, struck by a Kansas City bread truck on the highway just east of Stover Wednesday afternoon, is lost for good. The animal was dead enough for the scalding kettle a minute after the collision. It lay at the roadside and was still unclaimed Thursday forenoon. The truck is undergoing repairs at the Stover Motor Company garage. December 13, 1946 Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kaiser and Mrs. Joe Daniels went to Excelsior Springs Sunday to see Truman Kays, who is a patient in the veterans hospital there. Mrs. Kays, who has been with her husband at Excelsior Springs, returned home with them to spend a few days. Mr. and Mrs. August Grupe of Florence have moved to their Stover property, formerly the Jaster place. December 13, 1956 Monday morning of this week was a gay time for the students of Stover High School when we were notified we could use the new gymnasium for our physical education classes and other activities. For the past several months everything has been in Challenge a hurry, scurry fashion, with qualifier workers and school personnel in Camtrying to get everything ready denton. for the time when we could use T h ey’r e these facilities. At the present not just time, they are nearing comples h o w ing brains. They’re showing the tion of the beautiful stage. FTC program’s signature spirit of “cooperatition,” combining both cooperation and competition with other teams. Later Saturday, the Stover Police Department will take selected families Christmas shopping at Walmart. Local donors have shown a lot of community spirit by supporting the Shop with a Cop program. Other Christmas stores, charitable fundraisers, and toy giveaways are listed in a story about “Christmas Happenings” in this newspaper. Check them out. Or listen for the Baptist carolers Sunday evening, Dec. 18. School spirit, community spirit, Christmas spirit - They’re all on display this next week in Stover, in a way that should lift and warm the spirits of all.

December 15, 1966 Jim Kaufman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Harry, passed the oral examination for his eagle scout rank at the Eagle Board of Review conducted by Bill Schupp on Dec. 8 at the Versailles District meeting. Jim is the fourth scout from Stover’s Troop 23 to pass the eagle board in 1966. He was the senior patrol leader in 1966 for Troop 23 and is now a new member of Stover’s Post 23 for 1967. Jim has been working toward his eagle rank since 1963. December 15, 1976 An ordinance licensing doorto-door solicitation by out-oftown individuals and organizations was passed by the City Council at a meeting Monday night, Dec. 6. The “Peddlers license” ordinance requires that such solicitation within the city limits will be allowed only with a permit for each day, at a daily fee of $10, and solicitors much show proper identification and furnish an “itemized description of the services or goods or donations to be solicited’ to the City Clerk. December 10, 1986 The Stover fire and police departments were the main topics of discussion Monday night at the regular monthly meeting of the Stover City Council. Lengthy discussions took place in both open and closed ses-

sions, resulting in the resignation of assistant fire chief Fred Nolting, and several suggestions that police chief Harry Coplin tighten control over actions of the city police officers. December 11, 1996 Standing on the sideline are the 1996-97 Stover Lady Bulldog Cheerleaders, cheering as loud as they can to get the crowd pepped up and ready to rumble. Introducing the Stover Lady Bulldog Cheerleaders, there are three seniors, Regina Hunter, Gwenda Schlomer, and Alicia Nolting; seven juniors, Kelly Wertz, Cara Rowland, Robyn Poulter, Melanie Pendleton, Sarah Lemons, Melissa Kahler, and Jamie Poulter; and six sophomores, Carol Ingersoll, Crystal Coke, Abby Campbell, Marilyn Oehrke, Melissa Raliegh, and Amy Koester. December 13, 2006 Stover Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring Christmas decorating contests for residents and businesses this month. Prizes in three categories will be awarded to residents and to one business owner. Homeowners with the best decorations in small, medium and large categories will be awarded $15 gift certificates redeemable at any participating chamber business. The business judged to be the best-decorated will receive a free 2007 chamber membership.

What I want from Santa!

Library Bookworm

by Stacey Embry, Director, Morgan County Library We went live with OverDrive Friday, Dec. 1. I was really excited about this new feature for our patrons. Little did I know the warm feelings it would bring me in the next week. I have been reading eBooks for a few years. I had been purchasing my books until March of this year. In March, I visited the Price James Memorial Library in Tipton. I joined their library so I could try OverDrive for myself and for the potential future use by our library. So, yes, I have been “cheating” on my own library for the last 10 months. I apologize for my behavior, but trust me I am now solely dedicated and faithful to my library. Tuesday, when I came to work, I decided to run a report on OverDrive. From the Thursday before to that Tuesday, we had recorded seven audio and 26 eBook checkouts! When I did some more investigating, I discovered some interesting stats. Bear with me, I have told you I am a little nerdy. Statistic 1 – Two totally new patrons both specifically signed up for OverDrive. I know one of them had been “cheating” with the Cole Camp Library. Statistic 2 – Three patrons had not used the library in more than a year. Statistic 3 – Two patrons had not used the library in the last six months. Statistic 4 – Two patrons check out everything: paper books, eBooks and audio from OverDrive. I love these stats! They show me that we are

appealing to various patrons, not just a specific group, OverDrive is being used! Okay, I am a nerd; but back to my “warm feelings.” I come from a line of readers and I honestly believe most of us readers do. My grandmother was an avid reader. She instilled this in my dad; she potty trained him with reading as a main component (reading on the toilet is common, although often not discussed). My father and my mother are both readers, my mom can still remember how happy she was when she got her first library card! Well the line might seem strong, but I had thought it had stopped with me. I did everything right, honestly! I read to both my daughters, and they know how much I enjoy reading. My husband is not a reader. He reads all he can about hunting (magazines and online articles) and any other activity he is interested in; but I have only seen him read one book in the 25 years of our marriage. Get ready. The warm feelings are coming. Monday night, my oldest daughter and my husband both wanted to try out OverDrive. Yes, really! My husband finished his first OverDrive audio last night and was eager to start another. Boy, if I didn’t love him enough before, watch out world, this is going to a whole other level. I am excited to watch my library grow. I am excited when we do new things, but I had no idea I would see my family en-

King and queen candidates

joying it with me. I purchased Kindles for both my parents in the fall to prep them for what was coming. They haven’t done OverDrive yet. They are waiting for some help from me. My mother has been thrilled with our online catalog, but feels a little hesitant to try OverDrive without me. She is not alone. We have had phone calls about OverDrive and we will help get you there. Be patient with us. OverDrive offers a variety of options, which is great but also requires more knowledge. My staff is training themselves by setting up their own accounts: Amy has tried it on her cell phone. Berenice has tried it on her laptop. Jessica has past experience from her previous job. Shirley is jumping right in and leads everyone right to the help page, which is the perfect place to start. Warm feelings about books? Yep, I am a “nerd” and proud of it! I love seeing my husband’s enthusiasm about something I have always felt enthusiastic about. He wanted to talk about his book! Oh my! Maybe the next step will be a book club! For more information, visit the Morgan County Library, 600 N. Hunter, in Versailles, call 573378-5319; or see the library’s website at morgancountylibrary. org. Library hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday. The library will be closed Christmas Eve, Saturday, Dec. 24.

What do you do if it snows 18 inches? by Trish Payne’s third grade students at Morgan County R-I I woke up in the morning and got ready for school and I got dressed for nothing because I was listening to the radio and they were announcing the schools that were getting closed and my school was one of them! So instead of finishing getting ready for school I grabbed my sled and went to the top of my driveway. There was so much snow that when I was sledding the snow was so soft that I fell right in. I was so cold I could drink eight cups of hot chocolate but I didn’t because I wanted to stay outside with the snow. So first I made snow angels with mom in the snow. Then me and my brother had a snowball fight. We built barriers then we made the snowballs. It was fun. Then we built an igloo; it was so fun to build an igloo with my brother. The snow angels were so fun with my mom. Then it was time for the snow man with the whole family; it was fun. Then I ate snow. It was delicious. Then me and my dad made snow animals. Domunik Last night it snowed 18 inches so there is no school today. So I plan to do a lot today. First I will sled off the roof! I will definitely have to have a snowball fight with my sisters. It is going to be so fun. Hopefully we will have enough snow for a fort! We will have to try to build an igloo and we will decorate it with some snow beds for it! I will definitely have to try to drive my Traxxas truck in the snow. But first I have to have hot chocolate. Next the snow. It was so fluffy you could sleep on it but you would probably get frostbite. Sometimes I sink in so I build tunnels to get out. Sometimes we build tunnels for fun and we played tag in them too. We went to bed at 9 p.m. so if the snow melts in the morning we can get. Rhyker It snowed 18 inches of snow last night! I would make a snow fort and a snowman. I’ll even throw snow at my sister! Me and my mommy will make snow ice cream! And I will go sledding. I will have fun. I will make hot, hot, hot chocolate. I will throw snow in the air. I will have so much fun! I LOVE snow! Zoe I am going to have snow ball fights. I am going to make a big, big, big, big, big, big, big snow ball. The snowball will be as big as a kangaroo. I am going to make a snow wall. I am going to make an igloo. I am going to make a snow house. I am going to make a snow angel. Zachari When it snows I’m going to play outside and ride my bike. My pets Mittens and Jasmine will be playing with me, my brother, mom, and dad. Dustin I would puts my gloves on to play games in the snow. I go out-

I like to build a snowman and make snow angels. Then I go play video games and play snow ball fights. James I woke up at 5:00 when it was pink, red, yellow, and orange. The white, fluffy 18 inch snow was a great day to play outside. I put my shoes, my coat, my gloves, my scarf, and my hat on. The first thing I did was sled. When I started going on the sled I felt like I soared through the sky. Then, when I was bored off my mind going up the hill and down I went to go in the garage to get on my skis. I put my special shoes and my special helmet on then I put my skis on. Then, I went to a big hill in my field. Then, I zig-zagged on the big hill. The fun part was I didn’t have to go up and down a lot. The next thing I did was go inside to watch a movie and drink hot cocoa. Then, this is the part I knew I was going to beat my older brother in the snow mannea. First, I started to build my fort. Then, I built 100 snowballs. Then, the party started; I thew as fast as I could. I won the first challenge. The next challenge was to make the cutest snowman. Don’t you think I would win against my brother? Please, I made pigtails out of pinecones. My brother made hair that glows made out of lights off of our house. My brother was too cold. I just think I won too many times. He started to cry, so he went inside. Then, I went to my baby goats and piled them with white snow that was so cold and fluffy. Then I made them look like ice cream. I made them look like ice cream by swirling up and up then they peeked their heads and feet out and started to walk. Then I took off all the snow off of the goats and made a snow angel. Then I rested. Mia If it snowed 18 inches I would go outside and get my sled out of the garage and sled. I would also build a snowman and sit it on the back porch. I would also have me and my sister have a snowball fight. I would also have my dad pull us on the sled. I would also paint a snowman on a piece of paper. Ava

Lady Bulldogs drop two close games at Pilot Grove The Stover Lady Bulldogs lost two games by a combined total of six points at the Pilot Grove Tiger Classic last week. The Lady Bulldogs fell to Pilot Grove, 66-62, in the semifinal contest Tuesday, Dec. 6. The Lady Tigers led 31-23 at the half and 52-37 going into the fourth quarter before Stover rallied to cut the deficit to two points in the final minute, eventually losing by four. Coach Ernie Haag said a slow start to the second half was hard to overcome, “We got behind in the first half and then the first five minutes of the second half we really struggled offensively, starting the half with seven consecutive turnovers. We just didn’t have any focus starting the third quarter. Haag said Emily Bauer and Abby Uptegrove provided a spark off the bench during the comeback, “Emily knocked down a few shots and Abby really came in and solidified our rebounding with some good block outs. He also credited Ashley Schroder and Shelby Jackson for their rebounding, “Ashley and Shelby did an excellent job of rebounding and pushing the ball which gave us good shots and got us to the free throw line for some easy points. Jenna (Bellis) was really good from the line going eight for 10

in the second half. Stover made 73 percent of their foul shots for the game. “That has been an area we have been trying to improve on and it seems to be working, Haag said. “Now we just need to avoid bad stretches of offensive play and eliminate some turnovers and poor shot choices. We can see this team getting ready to take off, we just have to maintain the good things we are doing and get some more improvement in other areas. Schroder led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points. Bellis had 12. Jackson finished with 11. Morgan Iman added 10 points. Bauer scored nine and Matty Hinck contributed five points. Emily Schupp led Pilot Grove with 21 points. Stover dropped the thirdplace game to Linn, 46-44, Friday, Dec. 9. Haag said rebounding was the difference in the contest. “The tale of the game is we gave up 25 offensive rebounds. Linn just pounded the boards with their size and we just turned and tried to jump instead of getting position and boxing out. This has been a focus issue from day one and we just need to develop more

consistent effort in that area. He said the Lady Cats oneon-one defense also caused some problems for the Lady Bulldogs, “They came out and played a good sagging man-toman and we forced up shots and were not very patient on offense for most of the game. When we were patient and got good looks we were able to score or attack the basket. This is the first time we have seen man defense and we just rushed things. As with other areas of our game, we will get better the more we see man defense and the more we practice it the better we will be. Execution and shot selection will improve. Haag said he was proud of the effort his team gave, “I was proud of the way the girls battled despite the rebounding and offensive turnovers. It would have been easy to quit but they played to the finish and we had an open look to tie the game, but the shot just didn’t go in. Schroder led Stover with 15 points and four assists. Jackson had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Bellis scored 10 points and had four steals. Bauer added five points and Iman had two points and 15 rebounds. Harley Nale scored 12 points to pace Linn. MSHSAA adopts baseball pitch count limit for 2017 Beginning next high school baseball season, pitchers will be placed on pitch counts. At its November meeting, the Missouri State High School Activities Association Board of Directors approved a recommendation from the baseball advisory committee that pitchers be placed on daily pitch limits based on their year in school. The advisory committee voted unanimously to use the Pitch Smart requirements suggested by USA Baseball and Major League Baseball. Under the new rules, seniors and juniors are restricted to a daily maximum of 105 pitches while sophomores and freshmen

are allowed a maximum of 95 pitches daily. Pitchers can finish pitching to a batter if they reach the maximum number during an at-bat. Pitchers can pitch two days in a row as long as they don’t exceed 30 pitches per day, but they cannot throw three consecutive days. If a pitcher throws 76 or more pitches in a day, he will be required to take four days of rest, between 61 and 75 pitches requires three days rest, between 46 and 60 pitches means two days rest and between 31 and 45 pitches requires one day of rest before returning to the mound. The pitch counts apply to regular and post-season games. In June, the National

Federation of State High School Associations changed baseball rule 6-2-6 requiring each state association “to develop its own pitching restriction policy based on the number of pitches thrown during a game. The new rules are in response to the increase in the number of arm injuries sustained by young pitchers in recent years. Both teams will record pitch counts during the game and coaches should verify the numbers after each half inning. Both teams will sign the pitch count forms at the conclusion of the game and must submit the information to the MSHSAA website within 24 hours or face a $25 fine.
