Golden Age board counts 50th anniversary a success

The Golden Age Nursing Home District board Tuesday, Sept. 27 evaluated the facility’s 50th anniversary celebration Sunday, Sept. 25 at the Golden Age Living Center in Stover. Administrator Glenda Tietjen said she considered the celebration a success. She noted more than 165 meals were served. Tietjen said the event’s silent auction had a lot of participation, raising $1,335 to purchase a large-screen television for the facility’s Magnolia Room. Citizens Bank of Versailles also donated a large-screen TV for the Dogwood Court area. Collection issues Tietjen reported the status of three collection issues. The first account was delinquent for more than $15,000. Attorney David Yarger had written to the responsible party, who did not respond. Tietjen said the second pastWatching the Stover Community Action Club’s truck and tractor pull Saturday, Oct. 1 from the barrier alongside due account she discussed last the track at Stover Legion Memorial Park are, from left, Cameron, Christian, and Adalyn Krause of Smithton, three month was paid in full, and the of puller Brian Zimmerschied’s grandchildren. account had made a sizeable payment and applied for Medicaid assistance for the balance. Other business Tietjen reported plans to open a store at the facility, where residents may buy gifts and personal items at a low price. She also noted at least one of the facility’s vending machines needs to be replaced, and she would look for a reasonably priced machine. Financial manager Joanne Johnson reported the district’s tax account had a balance of $306,800.79. It was also noted financial auditors were expected at the facility Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 28-29, after a scheduling conflict prevented them coming as planned in August. The auditors are to present their report at the board’s next meeting, scheduled 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the living center in Stover.

In loving memory of

KENNETH MARTENS

Who passed away one year ago Oct. 5 A thousand times we needed you, A thousand times we have cried. If love could have saved you, You never would have died. In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still, In our hearts you hold a place no one else can fill. We think of you always, you did not go alone, A part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Life goes on, we know that is true. But it will never be the same without you. Missed so very much by his family, Naomi, Kenda, Robert, Sean and Brystol

of a fire hydrant. Also one of September’s SJH students of the month, Propst listed art as one of the activities he enjoys most, and said he would like a career in animation. Walker took third place in the watercolor category for her painting depicting water lilies in a pond. Mitchell noted he had only given Walker a few minutes of instruction about how to paint in watercolor before she chose it as her medium for the contest.

by ish An interesting question came my way at a recent community event where I had been asked to talk about the newspaper. Why, my questioner asked, does the newspaper charge for subscriptions and newsstand copies? Why couldn’t it fund 100 percent of its production costs with advertising, and simply be a free newspaper? Ask an interesting question, and you may get an interesting answer. Some newspapers are 100percent supported by ads and are distributed for free. There are even examples of such newspapers in neighboring markets that somewhat overlap the Morgan County Press’ coverage area. For example, there was the Highway 5 Beacon, which Vernon Publishing, Inc. operated out of the same office as the Press and the Versailles LeaderStatesman, until the end of July 2014. The Beacon was shut down the same week I started writing for the Press. While a lot of people miss it, and our new publisher may someday find a way to revive it, the reason for its demise is no mystery. Even though it was almost all

ads, the Beacon’s advertising revenue never even covered the postage costs to mail it to everybody in Gravois Mills, Laurie, and Sunrise Beach - let alone production costs. And because it had very little news content, it did not seem people would want to pay for it. Another example, actually the one my questioner confronted me with, is The Plainsman, a publication of the Sedalia Democrat (which is a subscription-model newspaper). But that comparison is not very apt. To start, The Plainsman has a large footprint. Consequently, it can fill more pages with mostly ads. For its non-advertising content, it provides less local news coverage and more general-interest material that isn’t as responsive to the interests of one community. For a publication like The Plainsman to provide more local news, it would have to do things differently. Its 100-percent advertising model might not work so well. Either it would have to sell more ads within a smaller radius, or its wider coverage area would restrict the amount of content that really interests people - stories they will read because

t hey’r e about their h o m e t o w n ; pictures they’ll cut out and keep because they’re of people they know. A free, advertising-based newspaper would also lack the distribution-based tools to tell its advertisers the value of their ads - tools like a subscriber database and newsstand sales figures, which are pretty reliable indicators of how many people read the paper. With a price per copy and subscriptions, we not only make up for lost advertising revenue from serving a smaller coverage area; we also collect evidence making our advertising more valuable. And this enables us to provide a product you, the reader, value. Challenging and innovative ideas are good. There may be changes that help this paper serve you better, and succeed as a business at the same time. But with a 106-year tradition as this community’s newspaper, the Morgan County Press also has good reason to keep doing what works.

October 2, 1936 It is a long time between showers some years in Morgan County, but the rain always has managed to show up sooner or later, and show up it did Saturday and Sunday, with nearly six inches of water. Monday, still more fell, and the total in the three days was right at eight inches. October 4, 1946 Raymond L. Huffman, son of Dr. and Mrs. Wm. F. Huffman of Stover, has just received a copy of the authorization awarding him the Distinguished Flying Cross. Raymond was an Armorer-Gunner from Jan. 14, 1945 to Aug. 31, 1945. He was a member of the 14th Air Force. October 4, 1956 A birthday party in honor of her fifth birthday was given for Judy Kay Oehrke by her mother, Mrs. Emil Oehrke, Saturday afternoon at their home in Florence. The little guests were Janet and Connie Carver, Jerry Myers, Julia and Clint Hibdon, Duane, Maurine, and Carolyn Baugh-

man, Irene Rehmer, Katie Born, Ruth Ann Rasa, and Leo Ray Oehrke. October 6, 1966 An attempted robbery at the Stover Tavern in Stover early Saturday morning resulted in the loss of a 1964 Chevrolet to the burglars, plus their haul of stolen property from other sources. The thieves left the car parked on First Street and apparently made their getaway by foot. October 6, 1976 Mass swine flu, or the A-New Jersey type influenza, vaccination is supposed to take place in Morgan County sometime during the month of October, but whether or not it does depends upon the arrival of the serum. Mrs. Helen Bolton, administrator at Morgan County Health Center, was in Stover last Wednesday meeting with volunteers who will assist at the mass clinics. October 1, 1986 Senior candidate Tracy Sowash was crowned queen at the annual FHA dance Friday

night at the Morgan County R-I School. Sowash is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sowash and was escorted by Monte Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Miller. October 2, 1996 Morgan County R-I High School art teacher, Craig Halloran, was one of 53 artists exhibiting work at the Laurie Fine Art Club’s Seventh Annual Show Saturday, Sept. 14. Halloran’s entry took second place in the mixed media division. Many local artists and artists from all over Missouri exhibited their work. October 4, 2006 Though moisture conditions improved in some areas of the county over the past month, large sections of Morgan County, particularly in the Stover area, have missed some of the rains. The Missouri Drought Assessment Committee continued to have Morgan County listed in the Conservation Phase of drought, the worst category assigned.

Library Bookworm

by Stacey Embry, Director, Morgan County Library My mom always says I “go at it like I am killing snakes.” I had never heard of this particular idiom until my mom was watching me doing some gardening. This was years ago and, if you know where I live, this is obviously not an issue anymore. If you are not familiar with this saying it actually is “like a boy killing snakes” and it means to do something with a great deal of energy. When I set my mind to a particular task or challenge, I tackle it head-on and do everything I can to get it done quickly and correctly. It is another way of saying I have control issues. If you want something done and I agree with it, then I am your go-to person. I can get things done. The problem is, I am not good at letting others help me. All moms know it is easier to do the dishes/laundry/etc. yourself than to have your kids do it. This is not a good trait. Things get done, but no one learns anything and sometimes “mom” just wears herself out. This last week, we had a special library board meeting. We had some issues that had come up and couldn’t wait until our

regularly scheduled board meeting. The meeting was short and sweet, but very productive. I am in awe of how well they work together. We have a variety of personalities and they are so respectful of each other. They are another well-oiled-machine that I am blessed to work with. I am learning so much in my new position. This is the first time in my life I am learning to rely on the input of others. I have a very reactive personality. I just charge in, like I am killing snakes. I appreciate my board members are thinkers and can help me achieve balance in my directing of the library. I am so excited about what we have achieved together and what we plan to do in the future. Be excited folks. We have some awesome plans. I am 46 years old and I am still growing as a person. I am learning to stop and think. I am learning to say “no” (sadly, more to my crazy self than others) and I am learning to work with others. I don’t know how many of you have been following the news lately, but the signs of the zodiac have changed. After 46 years of being a Cancer, I am now a Gemini. I called malarkey at this, and then I did some re-

search. “Cancer is one of four cardinal signs, meaning they are leaders of the zodiac. They approach everything they do with an unmatched enthusiasm and eagerness to get things moving. On top of that, Cancer is the motherly sign, further asserting a dominant nature — nonetheless, with good intentions. It could occasionally seem like a Cancer is bossing you around, but just know it’s with the best intentions in mind (and he or she probably can’t help it).” That pretty much sounds like a snake killer. My new quality with my new sign is the ability to communicate effectively and think clearly. So, maybe I am not growing or learning anything, maybe I am just getting in touch with the stars. Nope. I am calling malarkey on the stars. I am siding with wisdom and the benefit of wonderful people. For more information, visit the Morgan County Library, 600 N. Hunter, in Versailles, call 573378-5319; or see the library’s website at morgancountylibrary. org. Library hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday.

Junior high soccer Bulldogs blanked by Marshall, 4-0 The Stover Junior High soccer team lost a 4-0 decision against Marshall Wednesday, Sept. 28 in Marshall. Coach Chris Witte said the Bulldogs had three very good scoring chances in the first half, “The first two were on corner kicks that played across the front of the goal, but we weren’t able to get a touch on the back of it. The third came off of a free kick just outside the box.” The match was scoreless at halftime, but the Owls broke through in the second half. “We had about four mental lapses that allowed them to get inside the box, and Raden Layne came out to shut down the play, but wasn’t able to get enough of a touch on the ball to keep it out of the net,” Witte said. “Their second goal came on a corner kick that we weren’t able to get cleared cleanly, and in the mass

of bodies in the box, they were able to get the ball poked across the line. The third goal was again the result of a misplayed ball in the middle, which opened up a seam and allowed the goal. The final goal came from a free kick just outside the box.” Witte said Stover played much better as a team compared to earlier matches, “Our hustle and work ethic was the best I have seen all season. I would like to give Jason Winters and Hunter Wolfe credit for their play on the defensive end. Those two played some of their best soccer all season. I really think that if this positive trend in hustle and work ethic continues, we will have a very successful second half of the season.” The Bulldogs played Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Cole Camp and host Sacred Heart Thursday, Oct. 6.

Salute to the Morgan County 4-H clubs

Morgan County youth to celebrate 4-H week

Members of five 4-H clubs around Morgan County are among more than 6 million youth who will celebrate National 4-H Week Sunday, Oct. 2 to Saturday, Oct. 8 nationwide. National 4-H Week showcases the opportunities 4-H offers young people, and highlights the service of youth who work to make a positive impact on the community. Through community service, 4-H members develop leadership, citizenship, and life skills that help them become successful professionals and community leaders. According to a press release from Elaine Anderson, the 4-H youth specialist at the Morgan County MU Extension office in Versailles, research shows participation in 4-H has positive results in young people’s lives. Findings from the Tufts University “4-H Study of Positive Youth Development” indicate that, compared to other youth, 4-H members are: • nearly four times more likely to contribute to their communities. • two times more likely to pursue healthy behaviors. • two times more likely to engage in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs outside school. Morgan County clubs In Morgan County, more than 75 4-H youth and 22 community volunteers participate in five 4-H Clubs. • The Jolly Jokers 4-H Club

meets 9 a.m. the third Saturday of each month at the Providence School. • The Radiant Rascals 4-H Club meets 6 p.m. the third Monday of each month at the Versailles Rural Fire Protection District’s Highway 52 and Route D fire station. • The Little Rascals 4-H Club, for children age 5-7, meets 6:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at Mid-America Physical Therapy in Versailles. • The Silver Spurs 4-H Club meets 3 p.m. the third Sunday of each month at the Colvin home in Fortuna. • The Kountry Kids 4-H Club meets 6:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month at the American Legion hall in Stover. Drone Discovery During National 4-H Week, youth nationwide will particpate together in an experiment on 4-H National Youth Science Day, Wednesday, Oct. 5. Titled “Drone Discovery,” this hands-on, interactive design challenge promises to be the world’s largest youth-led science experiment. About 4-H The nation’s largest youth development organization, 4H helps kids build confidence to tackle issues that affect their communities. Salute to Morgan County 4-H Clubs A year in the life of the Kountry Kids 4-H Club

by Bobbie Kroeschen My name is Bobbie Kroeschen, and I’m proud to call myself the leader of the Kountry Kids 4-H Club. We are the longest established 4-H club in Morgan County, and we continue to grow and be strong. I couldn’t ask for a better group of kids and parents. They each take the 4-H pledge and motto to heart. We are so very grateful to the community for always supporting us, and we “pledge our hands to greater serviceâ€? for our community. The 4-H year now ending began October 2015 with our fall trash pick-up, our club’s community service project. We also spruced up the flower beds around all three “Welcome to Stoverâ€? signs before Memorial Day, and picked up trash in April as additional community service projects. Plus, we collected soda tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House. Fall means cool nights and fall themed activities! Last fall we had a fun night of roasting hot dogs and making s’mores and played games in the dark! One of the games was a mummy wrap contest using toilet paper‌ Now that was a challenge, but so much fun! The key is to make sure you pick the smallest person on your team to be the mummy! Christmas is always a fun time of year for the club. We adopted nursing-home residents, obtaining wish lists and shopping for just the right gifts for each resident. The kids

came up with some really nice things. They wrapped the gifts themselves, and then made the deliveries. This is the best part of Christmas for us: seeing the joy on the faces of the residents. It is our club tradition to have a float in the Stover Christmas Parade. The kids and parents together came up with some pretty good ideas, then worked together to get it done. This is always one of my favorite activities! I also like seeing the community out braving the cold to watch the parade. It’s great to see all the support and a community coming together. Summertime to us means Morgan County Fair time! The pressure is on to get projects done in time for check-in. This year, the Kountry Kids had projects in welding, scrapbooking, cured hams and bacon, food preservation, and woodworking. Most of them raised swine, sheep, poultry, goats and bucket calves, too. A few went on to compete at the Missouri State Fair. Participating at the fairs is an experience kids will never forget. You can learn a lot and make life-long friends in 4-H. The Kountry Kids 4-H Club meets the third Wednesday of each month at the American Legion hall in Stover. New members are welcome to join, and we are always looking for project leaders! For more information, call the Morgan County MU Extension office at 573-378-5358.

Have a great 4-H year, Kountry Kids! Your hometown newspaper, THE MORGAN COUNTY PRESS 573-378-5441 news@morgancountypress.com
