OFFICE OUTLOOK

T

The change in seasons brings a change in the atmosphere at the Pinto Horse Association Office as the staff and I make plans to head to Tulsa and present another successful horse show. The Color Breed Congress is almost here; are you ready? This year, the $4,000 worth of scholarship money is back - $1,000 to the top overall youth in each breed division. The show will take place November 5-10, 2013. We are excited to welcome the Western Dressage Association of America’s World Show and the Ranch Horse Sorting National Championship to the line up, as well. These events will occur just before the CBC, Nov. 2-3. Once again, the Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex in Tulsa, Okla. will play host for all. I am looking forward to seeing the Pinto Family yet again, as well as the other breed associations and disciplines that will be in attendance. I know the show will be packed with excellent exhibitors, friendly faces and top-notch competition. As always, the experience will be one of a kind. I encourage all members to join us in Tulsa for another outstanding event presented by the Pinto Horse Association of America, Inc. See you there!

Happy Trails!

It was a hot, sticky day in Newton, Conn., as half a dozen horse-crazy girls gathered for daily activities at “Jessica’s Camp,” a scholarship based camp at King’s Bridge Farm in Newton, Conn. The program provides riding lessons and equine activities for children whose families cannot afford it and is a branch of the Jessica Rekos Memorial Fund. Jessica Rekos was one of the 26 victims of the tragedy that overtook Sandy Hook Elementary School in December of 2012. She was an avid rider at King’s Bridge Farm, and had asked Santa for a new pair of boots and a hat for Christmas

A f t e r hearing about Jessica’s Christmas wish on the radio, Pinto Horse Association of America members Mindy Chernoff of Newtown Square, Pa., and Stephanie Heim of Woodbury, N.J., started a donation drive entitled, “Jessica’s Boots,” in honor of Jessica and her love for horses. The pair represented the New Jersey Pinto Horse Club, of which Chernoff is Vice President. Wanting to do something for the suffering and sadness they felt, the team started collecting items for the donation drive. “It was so fresh and raw in our minds and hearts, as well as with the rest of the country,” Chernoff said. “When Steph and I heard that [Jessica Rekos loved all things horsey and wanted boots for Christmas], it was as if a light was lit underneath us, almost a holy fire.” Over a seven-month period, they gathered donations of every kind. The team got the word out via phone calls, emails, radio shout outs, flyers and by word of mouth through personal con-

Local tack stores, other stables, families whose children had outgrown their show clothes, and even boot repair shops donated all kinds of “horsey” items to the cause. “I was so grateful for the donations,” Chernoff said. “I got boxes and boxes and bags of items: halters, bridles, saddle pads, blankets, even a saddle!” Although the donations poured in quickly, Chernoff and Heim faced struggles when it came to delivering the items. “We were so excited about gathering these items to bring up north,” Chernoff said. “We wanted the parents to know, to get their blessing for the name ‘Jessica’s Boots,’ to encourage them. My intentions may have been good, but my timing was terrible and very insensitive. The pain and suffering they were experiencing there was way too raw for any outside interference.” After weeks of anxiously waiting, Chernoff was able to get in touch with Annette Sullivan from Zoar Ridge Stables in Sandy Hook, Conn., who had once experienced a tragic loss herself. “When, tragedy strikes,” Sullivan told Chernoff, “Family and friends come out of the woodwork to help you. You appreciate the help, but then you get overwhelmed. You wish it would be quiet. Eventually, they go away and it gets quiet. You appreciate the quiet. But then, it stays quiet. And you are sad and left with your loneli-

y o u

The Pinto Horse Association of America, Inc. is proud to announce the largest combined color horse show in the world! The Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex in Tulsa, Okla., will host the Color Breed Congress, November 2-10, 2013. Exciting additions to the Color Breed Congress are happening in 2013. This year’s show will host the first-ever Western Dressage World Show and a ranch horse sorting, held in conjunction with the Ranch Horse Sorting National Championships. The actual Color Breed Congress classes encompass four separate breed shows in one. Participating breeds include the Pinto Horse Association, Palomino Horse Breeders of America, Appaloosa Horse Club and American Buckskin Registry. In addition to specific breed classes, exhibitors from each respective breed can earn the opportunity to compete against each other in the Champion of Champion classes. This system is designed for winners from certain youth, amateur and open classes to compete against one another to distinguish the true color champion in their respective category. “The Champion of Champions classes are a great opportunity for

r e a d y ?

exhibitors to showcase their breeds in front of the entire audience,” said Darrell Bilke, PtHA Exec. VP and COO. “What an amazing sight, seeing four breeds represented in the arena at the same time.” With an award budget of well over $150,000, awards will be abundant during the show. They include: jackets from Tioga Territory for class champions (with three or more entries), medallions for 1st-6th place in each class, Gist Silversmith custom belt buckles and Kensington Protective Products for high points. WDAA World Show participants will vie for a high point saddle, sponsored by Mike Corcoran Saddlery. Scholarships will also be given this year to the high point overall youth within each breed. A total of $4,000.00 will be evenly divided between the four breeds. The scholarships will be redeemable upon enrollment in college. Cash Challenge classes will return this year, with an estimated purse of nearly $10,000! In addition to the breeds at the show, horses registered in the following registries can participate: APHA, APHA Solid Paint-Bred and POAC. National Snaffle Bit Association dual approved classes are offered in

the Pinto, Palomino, Buckskin and Appaloosa breed shows, including solid classes. The NSBA classes provide an opportunity to gain points in both associations and compete for more prize money. Be sure and check out the CBC Market Place, held in conjunction with the show. Over 30 vendors from across the country will be open for business. This is a great opportunity to complete that Christmas shopping or pick up a forgotten hair net while still partaking in the horse show. “The Color Breed Congress has something for everyone in the colored horse industry, we hope you are able to join us in Tulsa,” Bilke said. For more information about the 2013 Color Breed Congress, WDAA World Show or ranch horse sorting please visit the website at www.colorbreedcongress.com or contact the Pinto International Headquarters at (405) 491-0111. See you there!

An FDA-approved product must have the studies to back up every claim it makes.1 No exceptions. That’s why you’ll see reference numbers and disclaimers in the ads. These items provide you with proof that the product works. If you don’t see any fine print, you likely aren’t getting what you’re paying for — even if it’s less expensive. And worse yet, your horse may not get the treatment it deserves.
