Bienvenidos a la edición 12 de Pinta Miami / Crossing Cultures, la feria líder en el campo del arte moderno y contemporáneo de toda Iberoamérica en diálogo con el arte mundial. En nuestro quinto año en ésta ciudad epicentro del arte latinoamericano, la feria continúa su exitoso posicionamiento en los cien mil pies cuadrados del Mana Wynwood Convention Center, donde los visitantes apreciarán mas de 300 obras de artistas representados por 83 galerias provenientes de 14 países. Además apreciarán el despliega obras de la prestigiosa Colección española INELCOM, secciones de gabinetes curados con proyectos individuales o en dúo y proyectos con curadores invitados en los pabellones de países. Pinta Miami sigue convalidando la relación dinámica entre lo local y lo global y aumenta su compromiso con la internacionalización de la producción de paises invitados, fortaleciendo el espacio de curadurías apoyadas por los gobiernos, que otorgan a artistas emergentes una incomparable oportunidad. De esta manera, la feria se afianza como territorio de conexiones y redes de visibilidad para las creaciones nacionales en un contexto internacional. Continuamos además con una labor de integración del arte de toda América: más allá de la difusión de máxima calidad del arte Iberoamericano –incluyendo España y Portugal– hemos trabajado especialmente en la consolidación de una visión continental integrada, que se aprecia en todo el ámbito de la feria. La curaduría Ad Astra, con instalaciones de gran formato en el área es ejemplo de una mirada que traspasa fronteras e integra todos los puntos cardinales de la producción artística. Ademas quisimos destacar el valioso aporte de dos figuras clave para la internacionalización del arte latinoamericano, un homenaje a la memoria de Sofia Imber por el papel en la introducción del arte contemporáneo en Venezuela y un tributo a Celia Birbragher por su incansable labor en hacer nexos entre las artes plásticas en Latinoamérica y el mundo. Welcome to the 12th edition of Pinta Miami / Crossing Cultures, the leading fair in dialogue with world art in the field of modern and contemporary art in all of Latin America. In our fifth year in Miami, this epicenter of Latin American art, the fair continues its successful positioning in the one hundred thousand square feet of the Mana Wynwood Convention Center, where visitors will be able to appreciate more than 300 works of art created by artists represented by 83 galleries from 14 countries. You will also be able to appreciate the works of the prestigious Spanish Collection INELCOM, and sections of cabinets curated with individual or duo projects and projects with guest curators in the country pavilions. Pinta Miami continues to validate the dynamic relationship between the local and the global at the same time that it increases its commitment to the internationalization of the artistic production of the invited countries. It is dedicated to strengthening the space given to curatorships supported by governments, which grant emerging artists an incomparable opportunity. In this way, the fair is consolidated as a territory of connections and a visibility networks for national creations in an international context. We also continue with the work of integrating the art of all the Americas: beyond the dissemination of the highest quality of Ibero-American art, we have worked especially hard in the consolidation of an integrated continental vision, which can be appreciated throughout the field of the fair. The Ad Astra curatorship, with its large-scale installations, is an example of a look that crosses borders and integrates all the cardinal points of artistic production. We also wanted to highlight the valuable contribution of two key figures in the internationalization of Latin American art, so we have crafted a tribute to the memory of Sofia Imber for her role in the introduction of contemporary art in Venezuela and a tribute to Celia Birbragher for her tireless work in making links between the plastic arts in Latin America and the rest of the world. I would like to thank EFG, the main sponsor of the fair, for its commitment to Ibero-American art and highlight the importance of the EFG Prize as it gains more prestige every year around the world. In the early seventies in Caracas (Venezuela), Claudio Perna did a series of experiments under the title “Infiltraciones” [Infiltrations]. The works consisted of classic paintings [J1] projected onto[J2] or interrupted by the bodies of the artist’s friends and of the artist himself. That idea—cherished by Perna—of “infiltrating” the art world with the brashness of other bodies is, in my view, an excellent metaphor for what is now, for a great many viewers, the primary way to relate to art: the intense juncture of an abundance of works and visitors part and parcel of the art fair format as art agora. For Pinta Projects (Pinta Miami 2018), Proyecto Visible with the collaboration of curator Jesús Fuenmayor has decided to present a group of four outstanding emerging Latin American artists interested in reflecting in

their work the “flaws,” “noises,” and “interruptions” that occur in dialogue both within the works themselves and between them and the environments in which they are exhibited. The four artists selected by Fuenmayor and invited by Proyecto Visible are Yaima Carrazana (CUBA-THE NETHERLANDS), Ilich Castillo (ECUADOR), Oscar Pabón ( VENEZUELA-SPAIN), and Yuli Yamagata (BRAZIL). Works the artists produced in Miami will be exhibited alongside a selection of their copious production on paper. In addition to works by these four emerging figures, Proyecto Visible will present works by recognized contemporary artists in order to generate dialogue between their productions.

CURATED BY YSABEL PINYOL MANA CONTEMPORARY announces Ad Astra, an ex-

hibition curated by Ysabel Pinyol Blasi that takes its title from the Latin maxim Per aspera, ad astra (“Through hardship, to the stars”). A collaboration with Pinta Art Fair Miami, Ad Astra interrogates the relationship of dedicated hard work and high-flying ambition to big ideas and creative success, often through physically grandiose images and objects. The grand and the visionary resonate here with the downright strange in an inquiry after the nature of human achievement. Featuring works inspired by real and imaginary spaces identified with its makers’ points of origin—many of which are reconfigured for the former soundstage in which they are displayed—Ad Astra revolves around hard-won transitions and surprising results. Agustina Woodgate’s Milky Ways (2013), for example, takes the form of a gigantic tapestry stitched together from the plush ‘skins’ of stuffed toy animals. In a neat

combination of the earthbound and the celestial, it confronts us with an unusually approachable, even cuddly, suggestion of the galaxy’s vast diversity and scale. Pedro Tyler’s Light House (2018) also plays with size, featuring surfaces constructed from the tools we use to calculate length, and in the process questioning how we might ‘measure’ ourselves. And a concern with scale permeates Finnish duo Mark Niskanen and Jani-Matti Salo’s Focal Point (2018) too, as they deploy pinspot lights, a pressure sensor, and a processor designed by open-source company Arduino to launch an interrogation of the otherwise unimaginable magnitude of contemporary solitude. Celia Sredni de Birbragher is a Colombian editor, researcher, collector, artist, critic, leader and entrepreneur who support the arts in Latin American for over 40 years. She holds a BA in Fine Arts from the Universidad de los Andes, and since 1976 have been the founder, editor and publisher of ArtNexus. In 1997, Mrs. Birbragher created the ArtNexus Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports, among other projects, the ArtNexus Documentation Center based in Bogota. In 2015, along with EFG Bank, has created the EFG/ArtNexus Prize Award for young Latin American Artists. In 2015, Birbragher received the A Award from the ARCOmadrid Art Fair and ARCO Foundation in recognition for more than 40 years devoted to the Latin American Art. In 2004, The Ministry of Culture in Colombia, granted her with the Medal for Cultural Merit in presence of Mrs. Lina Moreno de Uribe, wife of the former President of Colombia, Álvaro Uribe Velez. Additionaly, she received recognition to A Life Devoted to the Art, from the Association of Graduates of the Universidad de los Andes in 2011. Celia has curated international exhibitions such as: L’art Dans le Monde (Art of the World) at Pasaje de Retz, Paris; History of the Colombian Art from the XX Century, at the Centro Colombo Americano, Colombia. She has also served as advisor at the following exhibitions: America: Bride of the Sun, 500 years. Latin American and the Low

Countries, for the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, in Ambers, Belgium, and The Art of Fantastic Latin America, for the Indianapolis Museum, Indiana. She was the curatorial consultant for the Paradise Lost? Aspects of Latin American Landscape in Art (2003) exhibition organized by the Lowe Art Museum University of Miami. Mrs. Birbragher has served as President of the Colombian Section of International Art Critics -AICA-; as well as vice-president of the Association of Cultural Magazines in Colombia (ARCCA) and member of the National Council of Visual Arts for the Instituto Cultural Colombiano (COLCULTURA) for the past 18 years. The decisive participation of Sofía Ímber in the development of journalism, art criticism and Venezuelan cultural institutions make her one of the most influential figures in the contemporary history of the country and Latin America. With an attractive personality, inimitably controversial style, radical and exemplary commitment to work and critical acuity when interpreting creative and social processes, she carried out the necessary transformations to bring the country’s museums to a level of quality marked by excellence in the formation of collections and communicational and educational activities. The pioneering work of Sofia allowed to open the way for Venezuelan women in fields previously not traveled. She

was the first woman journalist, the first director of a section of Cultural Pages in the press, first host of an opinion program on television and the first director of a museum in Venezuela. Through the creation and direction of her main accomplishment, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Caracas Sofia Imber, in 1974, she changed the methods of conducting museums and cultural institutions in the country, stressing the importance of the quality of exhibitions, the achievement of excellence, the formation of an unrivaled collection, education programs and the overall communicative, innovative and integrating spirit of the MACCSI. Her contributions are not limited to the journalistic and cultural spectrum, but Sofia Imber is an example in the defense of the essential values of the definition of the human being and work for freedom and democracy.
