SPRING 2024 PROGRAM GUIDE This Program Guide is an overview encompassing our worship, learning, fellowship, music, and volunteer opportunities in one easy-tofind location. Pinnacle Presbyterian Church has a long-standing commitment to providing a wide array of opportunities for adults, youth, and children of all ages. All are welcome! For general questions regarding our offerings, please contact the office at admin@pinnaclepres.org.

CHILDCARE Childcare is offered for infants through elementary-age children and is available upon request with requirements met. Our trained caregivers provide a safe and loving environment while your children enjoy making new friends and participating in fun, creative activities. LUNCH AT PINNACLE We offer fellowship together over a meal on Sundays throughout the program year. Adults are encouraged to pay $10 a meal and children are $5 a meal (children under 4 are free).

REGULAR SUNDAY MORNING CLASSES, CHOIR & VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES REGISTRATION Registration is not required for most adult events, but all children and youth activities do require registration. To volunteer with anyone under 18 years old also requires safety training protocol which must be renewed annually. Please come, grow, and enjoy! Scan the qr code to register today.

Let’s explore God’s word together and learn how to apply it to our lives while participating in highly engaging activities, Bible study, prayer, art, science, and music. HIGH SCHOOL DINNER & YOUTH GROUP Sundays, Jan. 7 – May 26 | 6 – 8 pm | Teen Center All 9th - 12th-grade students come together for dinner (sometimes making meals together), and social, and spiritual opportunities. This spring we begin a new series by Fuller Youth Institute - Can I Ask That? Teenagers are asking tough questions about Christianity, God, and the Bible. More often than not, those questions are met with 6


vague and frivolous answers. Join us as we dive into the deep end of faith, discovering our own convictions as it relates to some of the biggest questions we can ask. Questions from Fuller Youth Institute series include: • Does the Bible contradict itself? • Can I be a Christian and believe in evolution? • Is Jesus really the only way to God? • How can I follow a God who would let Christians do such bad things?

CONFIRMATION (8th – 12th grade) Resumes Jan. 7 | 9 am | Teen Center Confirmation resumes after Christmas break on January 7th. Confirmation class is intended for students in 8th grade and above to explore the foundations of our Christian faith, what it means to be a disciple of Jesus, and what it means to be Presbyterian. COLLABORATIVE YOUTH PROJECT (for 8th – 12th grade students) Defying Stereotypes, Decades Apart Sunday, Feb. 4 | 1 – 2:30 pm | Fellowship Hall Albert Einstein said, "If you only talk to people like you, you'll never learn anything new." What does a teenager have in common with someone in the 6th, 7th or 8th decade of life? What can they learn from one another? In partnership with the Museum of Arizona Artists (MOAZA), Youth will participate in small group conversations with local artists around the theme of what can we learn from one another. JOURNEY TO THE CROSS Wednesdays Feb. 21 – Mar. 20 | 5:30 - 7 pm | Teen Center Children are invited to join us for a special Lenten series featuring lessons, games, dinner, and crafts. PARENTS' NIGHT OUT Friday, Feb. 16 | 5:30 – 8:30 pm | Teen Center Take the night off! Parents are invited to drop off children for a babysitting event. Activities and a movie will be provided for children. Cost is $30/family. RSVP to Liz at lsmith@pinnaclepres.org by Jan. 21.

HIGH SCHOOL SPRING RETREAT Feb. 16 - 18 | Southern Arizona Take a break from the busyness that the school year brings and join your church siblings as we head to Southern Arizona for our spring retreat! While there, we will engage in special border ministry projects and worship at a local church in the area. This is open to all 9th - 12th grade students. YOUTH MUSIC OUTREACH AND FELLOWSHIP EVENT TO FOLLOW Sunday, Mar. 17 | 11:30 am – 3 pm | Off-Campus Following the post-service lunch, all 6th - 12th Grade Youth are invited to join our music group to help spread the good word through song and speech. When we rush into Easter Sunday, we miss the important lessons learned during the events of this significant week. You’re invited to set aside time to meet with the Holy Spirit through prayer. These stations are inspired by Jesus’ last few days and are designed to help worshippers of all ages to focus their hearts and minds during this season.

CONFIRMATION OVERNIGHT RETREAT Apr. 19 - 20 | Off-Campus For confirmands who are a part of our 2024 confirmation class. This is a local retreat for confirmands and their mentors. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS) June 3 - 7 | 9 am – noon | PPC Campus Adventure awaits your child this summer! Registration will open on March 3rd. Children who are potty trained & have completed 1 year of preschool, ages 3 through incoming 5th graders are welcome to join us this summer for VBS. VBS CELEBRATION BBQ Friday, June 7 | Noon – 2 pm | Trinity Terrace & Fellowship Hall Enrolled VBS children and their families are invited to party! Children must have an adult present to enjoy the festivities. Please bring bathing suits and towels for water fun. Enjoy lunch, music, water and lawn games.

In this gripping adventure a science vessel sets out for Eden, a pristine wilderness with an impossible predator. Join George and Mike as they discuss the connections between faith and speculative fiction and how Kraken of Eden reveals what it means for the human spirit to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. TIME TO LISTEN How to Negotiate Personal Conflicts, Political Conflicts, and Everything in Between with Dr. Kyle Jensen Sundays, Feb. 4, 11, 18 | 11:15 am | Fellowship Hall James 1:19 tells Christians that we should be quick to listen and slow to speak. But how do we accomplish that task, especially in the heat of conflict? This three-part class will present a more nuanced theory of how human beings listen, help you identify the specific ways that you listen when presented with a different perspective, and teach you strategies that will help you become a more generous listener when conversations become difficult.

FAITH AND SCIENCE The Metaphysics of Sound with Jacob Adler Thursday, Feb. 8 | 6 – 7:30 pm | Rehearsal Hall Jacob Adler will present a wide-ranging discussion on the mathematics of harmony, the physics and neuropsychology of sound, the varieties of mystical experience, and the search for meaning and spirituality in music. Jacob will perform musical selections on the piano, including J.S. Bach's deathbed chorale Vor deinen Thron tret' ich hiermit and Alexander Scriabin's Vers la Flamme. This 60-minute discussion will be followed by a 30-minute Q&A.

LENTEN LEARNING – THE SYMBOLS OF LENT Wednesdays, Feb. 14 – Mar. 20 | 5:30 – 6:15 pm | Chapel Library Join us for a Lenten journey through reflective symbols that ultimately lead to Jesus’ death on the cross. This journey is not meant to be a solitary excursion into oneself, but a long walk with good companions along the way of the cross. Borg & John Dominic Crossan Thursdays Feb. 15 – Mar. 21 | 8 – 9 am | Chapel Library & Z0om The Jesus that many followers know from books and stories is not quite as complex as the actual man was. In modern Christianity, many details of Jesus, as a man, are often overlooked or not delved into. As Biblical scholars, Borg and Crossan have made it their mission to unravel and to present for Christian audiences the intricacies of the final days of Jesus. WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP RETREAT Created in the Image of The Creator Saturday, Feb. 24 | 10 am – 4 pm | Boyce Thompson Arboretum In the beginning God created. As we are created in the image of God then we are creators too. However, we don’t often have space to explore this side of our identities. Step away with us at Arizona’s oldest and largest botanical garden alongside Queen Creek for a day of rest, renewal, and discovery. FAITH AND SCIENCE on Isaac Newton with David Schaller and Dr. Mike Hegeman Thursday, Mar. 14 | 6 – 7:30 pm | Rehearsal Hall Isaac Newton is one of the most famous scientists of all time. Many scholars even consider him the greatest scientist who ever lived, but often his faith is not mentioned. He believed in divine creation and wrote strong articles opposing atheism and defending the Bible. Join us to learn more about Newton’s Christian journey.

In this wise and compassionate book, Father James Martin, SJ explores the story of Jesus’s greatest miracle—the raising of Lazarus from the dead—and what Jesus means when he calls each of us to “come forth.” Meditatively and carefully, Martin leads us verse by verse, offering profound reflections on Jesus’s lessons on love, family, sadness, frustration, fear, anger, freedom, and joy. FAITH AND SCIENCE Gender Expectations in Music with Dr. Kay Norton, Arizona State University Thursday, Apr. 4 | 6 – 7:30 pm | Rehearsal Hall Kay Norton (Ph.D. Musicology, University of Colorado-Boulder 1990) is Professor of Musicology in the School of Music. She researches music’s association with wellness, American sacred music, and music of the American South. This presentation is drawn from one of her courses, “How Gender has Mattered in Music History.” It examines 17


specifically gendered discourses about music relating to women, and the ways female musicians have negotiated gender expectations of their respective eras.

It was also written over the span of 2,000 years with many authors. There is a lot to learn about the book that defines our Christianity with 3,300 translations into different languages. Six medical clinics within the Valley provide free medical care for the uninsured, underinsured, and ignored. VISTA DEL CAMINO A community center in Scottsdale that offers a range of services to residents within the area. Services include the prevention of homelessness, providing basic necessities for individuals and families, 25

UMOM NEW DAY CENTERS As the largest shelter for families in the state of Arizona, they provide services for tens of thousands of families. Services include providing safe and permanent housing, employment assistance, self-sufficiency training and supportive services.
