A word from the Pastors

Reflecting Back and Looking Forward

Let us declare with scripture, “What a wonderful thing God has done!” (Luke 9:39) We hear stories of members who remember lifting chairs from a car’s trunk to set up Sunday mornings, lively talks about just what kind of church God was calling them to shape, folks signing the charter and singing for joy, watching five acres become twenty, building plans, first shouts of preschool kids, first strains of two extraordinary pipe organs, grand harmonies, turning outward in mission, sending children off into lives of discipleship, mourning deaths of cherished friends, the first ordination into professional ministry of one of our own, welcoming and sending, and all the human stuff that goes into all the Godly stuff.

At 25, we might be the oldest congregation in the area, but in God’s view we’re still so very young. We’ve got future, hope, and work yet to do. And isn’t that great!

Happy 25th, Pinnacle!

In 1989 residents of the Pinnacle area didn’t realize that they needed a church, but they would perceive that need soon enough. Wealthy people, like anyone, could not flourish without the light of the Word - and a church to radiate it. I knew that living behind guarded-gate communities amid magnificent golf courses with architectural-magazine-cover homes didn’t give them immunity from encountering family problems, death, despair, disease, and dysfunction.

Gate transponders don’t keep sin, suffering, and darkness out of one’s life; indeed, the gates often seem to lock in frustration and loneliness.

Though the sun was bright in Arizona in the spring of 1989, and though the budding North Scottsdale community enjoyed a high quality of life, still this community needed the Gospel.

They needed the Word of hope and meaning. They weren’t going to find enduring happiness in a world of consumer-driven, leisure-time activities. I was filled with a passion for success, and my achievement-driven type-A personality would propel this project forward. People’s lives would be stronger, more informed, transformed, and balanced - by the living light of the Gospel.

What was most memorable for you about serving God at Pinnacle?

It was assisting the congregation to implement a vision for a high quality Christian education program for Pinnacle members while addressing the interests of the greater community. The challenge: “How does a new church development with limited funds and mostly unchurched members create an education program that equipped its members to think theologically, to teach, to lead, and to serve with graciousness and hospitality to all?”

Former Associate Pastor for Christian Formation and Congregation Care The love, strength, and devotion of the many families that make up Pinnacle. What a joy and a gift to be in ministry with so many families who gave their all in wanting to live out their faith, and in particular, their commitment to do that at Pinnacle. One of my favorite experiences was going to Pine Summit in Prescott for Family Camp.

It was a true partnership between pastors and lay people. It was a time to recognize our need for community and also our need for a relationship with the divine. What a gift to share that time together.

What is your hope for Pinnacle in the future?

Pinnacle’s Mission

We come together as God’s people, welcoming each person at different places in their walk of faith, creating a stimulating environment to explore and grow in one’s faith. Worship is casual traditional, filled with joy and music. Ministries for children, youth and adults explore a broad range of faith expression, honor questions and respect individuality. Ministries of compassion and social change work locally and globally to embody love, respect and Christian hope for all. Activities include all generations for mutual support in time of need, social fellowship, education, music and mission. We are people who know the power of forgiveness, joy and love.

By the Numbers In the span of 25 short years, Pinnacle has grown to be one of the largest one hundred and fifty among the over 10,000 congregations in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) denomination. During this time, Pinnacle has shared God’s story and expressed God’s love through preaching, teaching, discipleship, mission and caring.

1956 Valley Presbyterian held its first service in Desert School of Art, Paradise Valley

U.S. Army Chaplain Winfield Scott homesteaded land that would become the settlement bearing his name, Scottsdale, AZ. Until his death in 1910, Rev. Scott, a Baptist minister, was a leader of the Salt River Valley faith community, served in the Territorial Legislature, co-founded the Scottsdale School District and was a champion of Scottsdale as a great place for farming, tourism, health care and raising a family.

More than 60 years after its founding, Scottsdale finally incorporated as a town on June 25, with a population of 2,032 living on less than half a square mile (now Scottsdale’s downtown district).

The Founding Years

Glenn Moor at Troon Village Clubhouse Faith, fellowship and the future. Those were the powerful magnets that drew a group of Pinnacle Peak residents together in October 1989 to form Pinnacle Presbyterian Church. The charismatic catalyst for the formation of Pinnacle was Dr. Lawrence “Larry” Corbett, associate pastor of Valley Presbyterian Church, who discovered a need, an opportunity and a calling.

The mostly undeveloped area surrounding the distinctive Pinnacle Peak had been annexed into Scottsdale in 1981/82, and by the late 1980s, there were several master-planned golf communities within a five-mile radius of the landmark. The Grand Canyon Presbytery had the foresight in the early 1980s to purchase a five-acre tract on the northwest corner of Happy Valley and Pima Roads for a future church. At the time, the nearest churches were north in Carefree or south along Shea Boulevard. Area residents could also worship ecumenically in a rustic chapel on the grounds of the Cavallieres’ Reata Pass and Greasewood Flat Restaurants. With Valley Presbyterian Church Sr. Pastor Tom Erickson’s blessing, Dr. Corbett organized the inaugural Pinnacle worship service at the Glenn Moor Clubhouse on Happy Valley Road in Troon Village. Twenty-five attended the first service on Sunday, October 1, 1989 -- World Communion Day. During its first year, Pinnacle was a hands-on/all-hands-ondeck congregation. Members set up and took down the white folding chairs used at each service. The practice of using white grape juice for communion came from the fear of spilling purple grape juice on the beautiful green and blue carpet at Glenn Moor. Communion bread was baked using a 300-year-old recipe from the Kirk of Scotland (similar to shortbread without the leavening). Church School was on the tennis courts, and the church nursery was in the Troon Country Club employee lounge (the chef fixed special treats). Church social events were held at Troon Country Club, which generously offered its facilities.

Pinnacle’s first Fall Round-up was held by the clubhouse pool.

The Leinwebers hosted the initial youth group meetings in their home. And Joe Larson led a group of volunteers in making luminaria for Pinnacle’s Christmas 1989 service.

The Founding Years

Valley Presbyterian Church provided much support during Pinnacle’s first three years. Mariner groups took turns ushering at worship; soloists, ensembles and other small musical groups provided special music with no compensation; Valley continued Dr. Corbett’s compensation for three years, decreasing it by one-third annually; administrative support came by allowing Pinnacle to use VPC office equipment. Glenn Moor Developer Doug Kruidenier gave Pinnacle the use of the Troon Real Estate Clubhouse at no charge.

The Founding Committee took care of a myriad of start-up issues, from rattlesnake management in the Glenn Moor parking lot, to toys for the nursery, to financial planning for the future, according to charter member Jim Paisley.

“This founding group was congenial, had zero experience in our role, were unknown to each other initially, but developed a vision for our church. And Reverend Corbett kept us on track.”

Dr. Corbett began visiting the sales offices of Pinnacle Peak area home developments and met with real estate agents to let them know about the new church. He also found that having a superb music program was important to charter and prospective members. He and the founding committee soon realized that area residents, who felt a bit isolated living in gated communities, began to gravitate to Pinnacle in order to meet their neighbors in faith and fellowship. Pinnacle began community outreach efforts, adopting families through Vista del Camino during the 1990 holiday season and holding Food Bank Sundays to benefit the Foothills Food Bank. Pinnacle hosted a Potpourri & Home Tour in 1991 and 1992, and an Artists’ Showcase in 1992, continuing the fund-raiser for several more years.

Pinnacle Presbyterian Church was officially chartered by Grand Canyon Presbytery on November 9, 1991 with 109 members. The first meeting of the Pinnacle Session was held in January 1992. Proposed by-laws, written by Bill Bennett, were reviewed. Hazel Smith was appointed first Clerk of Session. At a February congregational meeting, the first Pastor Nominating Committee, chaired by Steve Horrell, recommended that Dr. Lawrence Corbett be called as Pastor; Dr. Corbett was installed in March 1992.

Throughout 1992, momentum built for constructing a permanent Pinnacle campus. In April, the Site Development Committee, chaired by Mark Leinweber,

presented its recommendation to Session to execute a contract for a topographical survey of the future campus. A committee interviewed three architects who presented their vision for the new church facilities. It was the consensus that the same architect would do the entire campus so it would have a consistent style. While most churches build a multi-purpose building first, it was strongly felt that Pinnacle needed a chapel, offices and classrooms from the beginning. Members of the congregation had major input into the design and functions of their new chapel and campus. In October, architect Jim Roberts presented the Master Plan and first phase of the church building program.

During a March 1993 congregational meeting at the Glenn Moor Clubhouse at Troon, Dale Baker, on behalf of the Pinnacle Stewardship Committee, proposed a plan for financing the Chapel. To date, $352,000 in pledges and $80,000 in cash had been raised, with the balance to be received between 1993 and 1995. Estimated total construction cost was $1.3 million; the congregation voted to authorize. The church decided to sell promissory notes to finance the chapel. Dale Baker wrote the prospectus and handled the sale of the notes. In effect, the congregation borrowed from itself and then paid off the notes.

On April 4, 1993 Pinnacle members attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the 150-seat chapel built on the original five acres of land that had been purchased by the Grand Canyon Presbytery (and repaid by Pinnacle Presbyterian) at Pima and Happy Valley Roads. By its fourth anniversary in October 1993, Pinnacle had grown to 110 members and was over-crowding the Glenn Moor Clubhouse. Relief was in sight!

Creating a Campus

Pinnacle Chapel, Campus Draw New Members Palm Sunday – March 27, 1994 was truly a day to celebrate in the life of Pinnacle Presbyterian. Dr. Corbett invited worshipers into their new chapel, calling out “Alleluia!”

Ken Tony of Scottsdale Stained Glass was contracted to design stain glass windows for the Chapel. The theme of the chapel is ‘streams in the desert.’ The front window is the tree of life with the stream flowing below it. The large south side window begins on the right with darkness. It becomes increasingly lighter and culminates in the light of the south chancel representing the birth of Christ.

With a new chapel, classrooms and administrative offices, the church was finally under its own, consolidated roof. Youth activities expanded, and in 1995 Pinnacle Preschool opened, providing a much-needed service to Pinnacle Peak-area families.

The Schantz pipe organ, installed in the chapel in 1995, elevated the music ministry. As one of the only public spaces in the area, Pinnacle’s chapel hosted public meetings and real estate agent events, became a voting site and even provided shelter to residents evacuating during the July 1995 Rio fire.

These events also attracted new members and swelled the ranks of the congregation. In 1997 Pinnacle added a Fellowship Hall and Memorial Garden to its campus as well as a new facility for the Preschool. New mission activities began, associate pastors and staff joined Pinnacle, and a building program launched to provide a sanctuary for a membership that had grown to over 700 by the year 2000.

On Friday, July 7, late afternoon rain and lightning sparked a wildfire across the desert at the then end of Happy Valley Road. Many in the Pinnacle Peak area watched the high flames and started to prepare for evacuation. Those with pets who couldn’t go to a motel were told by police to meet in the Safeway lot at Pinnacle Peak and Scottsdale Roads. The Pinnacle Chapel became the evacuation site for homeowners displaced during the Rio Fire. The Red Cross came and set up and refreshments were available. The next morning, CNN broadcast an update from the chapel lectern, and Dr. Corbett was interviewed. Homeowners were allowed to return to their homes in Troon Village by Sunday, July 9th. Fortunately, no homes were affected by the fire. For a long time afterwards, new Pinnacle members indicated that their first contact with the church was the night of the fire and sleeping on the pews.

A Growing Congregation

A Sanctuary in Harmony with its Environment

As the 800-seat Pinnacle Sanctuary rose from the ground, the congregation participated in construction milestones, signing their names and Bible passages to subflooring, wallboard and other structures.

Cave Creek artist Sam Terry was commissioned to create a cross for the sanctuary as a work of religious art. After months of work the 40 foot tall cross, made of native desert ironwood, Arizona copper, and polished African walnut stood as if growing from flowing waters of baptism and the pulpit. This work has distinguished Pinnacle in the community since it was unveiled. The same artist design stained glass depicting the Holy Spirit around the cross.

Christmas season 2001 celebrated in the nearly-complete Sanctuary was particularly poignant, as the nation was still reeling and healing from the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.

The City of Scottsdale was as proud of the new facility as the congregation -- the Pinnacle Sanctuary was the city’s first ‘green church’ under the newly-adopted Green Building Program. The acoustically-significant space also boosted Pinnacle’s music program.

The Sanctuary became an important area concert venue, particularly after installation of the Richards, Fowkes & Co. Opus 14 pipe organ in 2005. Beyond the campus, Pinnacle’s mission activities included a trip to Mexico, Habitat for Humanity projects and continued support of Andre House, Heifer International and Vista del Camino programs.

Expanding Mission & Outreach

Changing of the Pastoral Guard, Pinnacle Promises Hope

With membership over 1,100 and hundreds of youth involved in a variety of activities, Pinnacle launched a fifth Capital Campaign to fund additional classrooms, a youth building, a children’s center, mission, more parking and to retire debt.

Progress was made toward these goals.

Church leaders also established the Pinnacle Presbyterian Foundation in order to ensure and safeguard the longterm financial interests of the church and strengthen the congregation.

In August 2007, the founding Pastor Dr. Larry Corbett retired from Pinnacle and accepted a call to a church in Hawaii; after a thorough national search, Pinnacle called Dr. Wesley Avram as Senior Pastor and Head of Staff.

In 2008, Pinnacle joined with other churches to support Harmony Ministries in Haiti, the start of a long and rewarding relationship of mission and friendship. The Pinnacle Promise mission initiative launched in 2010, with special focus on local homelessness issues and support to Haiti, which had been devastated in that very year.

Pinnacle choirs staged several, annual special events, and the Pinnacle Concert Series was recognized by a local newspaper as “Best Concert Series of the Year.” The Pinnacle Theological Center began offering thought-provoking and discussionstimulating programs.

In November of 2011 the congregation mourned the passing of Rev. Fran Park. In his memory, Pinnacle established the Francis W. Park Memorial Lecture series. The first lecture was held on April 29, 2012, and featured Dr. Angel Cabrera, president of Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Strengthening Programs

People, Programs Provide Ministry in All Directions The Pinnacle congregation stepped forward in many ways to serve their church, each other and the community at large.

During these years, ongoing service through disaster relief work trips, Habitat for Humanity, and Andre House volunteering was expanded.

In 2012 the Pinnacle Promise Homelessness Initiative expanded programming to include participation in Open Table mentoring groups and support to MANA House in Phoenix serving veterans. Within four years seven Open Table Teams of more than 68 individuals have worked on one or more Teams to help seven individuals/families become self-sufficient.

On Feb. 11, the Pinnacle Sanctuary was the site of a memorial service for Arthur Hubbard, Sr., a 102-year-old who served as a Navajo Code Talker in WWII and, later, as an Arizona legislator.

He had also been in the first class to graduate from the Presbyterian mission school at Ganado, Arizona.

In 2012 the Pinnacle Promise Homelessness Initiative produced a documentary film, The Road Back Home, that addressed the problems of homelessness in Maricopa County, Arizona. The film premiered on May 17 at a Harkins Theater and was shown twice on local television.

A four-week Tending the Promise Campaign launched in January 2013 aimed at raising $2.750 million over three years. Funds raised would first retire the mortgage on the Sanctuary, and, second, provide funding for expanded parking and to upgrade the Fellowship Hall kitchen. At time of printing this document the mortgage debt had been reduced by more than $2 million.

Thanks to successful rummage sales every spring, Pinnacle teens traveled to Greer, Chicago, Yarnell and San Francisco for mission work and fellowship.

The Chancel Choir and the Preschool each celebrated 20th anniversaries in 2014. The Pinnacle Vision strategic planning committee involved hundreds of members of the congregation to review and update Pinnacle’s mission and prepare for the future.

Throughout its 25th year Pinnacle held events in celebration of its founding, including the Sanctuary installation of liturgical art inspired by Nancy Chinn and created by congregation members.

In service to all members of the Pinnacle family, a Stephen’s Ministry program began, and fellowship groups expanded.

In June 2015, Rev. Harmon and five Pinnacle members traveled to Haiti to attend and participate in the dedication service for the new Harmony Ministries sanctuary, for which Pinnacle had given significant support.

After serving for more than 16 years, Bill Noyes retired as Clerk of Session, and Jeff Smith became the new Clerk in July 2015.

In October, as Pinnacle prepared to celebrate its 25th Anniversary, Pinnacle member Emily Béghin became the first Pinnacle seminarian to graduate and be ordained by Pinnacle.
