Our course hosted the Disabled British Open in 2009 and is one of the official venues of the Trilby Tour in 2011. The resort offers luxury accommodation, relaxing health spa facilities, fantastic cuisine and an outstanding 18-hole championship golf course, designed by the BBC’s ‘voice of golf’ and the club president, Peter Alliss.

The par-72 course has an illustrious history. Plans for its development started in 1976 and came to fruition in 1981 when Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas completed the construction.

A year later its official inauguration saw Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus, Isao Aoki and the then reigning Open champion, Bill Rogers, play a competitive fourball. Aoki won with a round of 69, and the scorecards from that day are proudly on display in the new sports bar at Old Thorns.

That’s not all you can see in the sports bar, because we show all the major sporting events on Sky Sports and ESPN and in 3D. If you are still in the mood for competition after your round of golf, then play a few frames of pool, or for those just wanting to chill out, our relaxation areas are the perfect setting to discuss your day with friends and colleagues.

Our new restaurant Bunkers offers contemporary food in a modern and stylish setting, with patios and terraces overlooking the driving range. The hotel has 86 refurbished bedrooms, including suites, family rooms, four-poster beds and the Alliss Family Suites.

All hotel rooms have access to the resort’s other facilities including the Kings Brasserie Restaurant which offers contemporary English cuisine and Sunday roasts, the health club, which specialises in ESPA treatments, the gymnasium and fitness centre which is undergoing a major refurbishment in 2011, conferencing facilities for up to 300 delegates and the luxuriously-appointed Atrium champagne and cocktail bar.

History The site on which Old Thorns Manor Hotel, Golf & Country Estate stands was first documented in the 17th century, when two traditional stone cottages were inhabited by local farm workers. Over time the cottages were converted into one house, and by 1949 when entrepreneur and businessman Ken Wood (he of Kenwood food mixer fame) bought the property, Old Thorns was a working dairy farm with a large herd of cattle.

History (continued) Mr Wood made considerable improvements to Old Thorns Farm, by adding 28 bedrooms, a working kitchen, a large drawing room and a cellar. He also employed a farmer to tend the cattle and recognised the potential his land possessed, because it was obvious to him that it held all the attributes required of a great golf course. Contact was made with Commander John Harris, Britain’s most famous golf course architect of the day, and he accepted a commission as the course designer.

Harris produced the first blueprint for Old Thorns across 130 acres of the estate’s land in 1976. Sadly, he did not live to see the project sanctioned, but sanctioned it was, and Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas took over the construction of the course and saw it through to completion in 1981.

The official opening the following year was endorsed by a competitive fourball between Isao Aoki, Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus and reigning Open champion, Bill Rogers, with Aoki emerging victorious after shooting a 69. In April 1984, Old Thorns was brought by the Kosaido Development Company, renowned for their ownership of many prestigious golf courses around the world.

The Tokyo-based firm introduced a number of luxury features to the golf club and in January 1985, introduced a high-quality Japanese restaurant called Nippon Kan, which immediately won great acclaim.

In 2007, the resort was bought by the Shaw family and has subsequently undergone a multi-million pound development seeing numerous world-class facilities being built including a brand new 52-bedroom block bringing the number of bedrooms at the resort to 86. New facilities for guests include a champagne and cocktail bar, a brand new sports bar and a restaurant.

The resort now also boasts ten conference rooms, which can cater for up to 300 delegates and is also one of the most soughtafter wedding venues in the South of England.

Old Thorns has significantly changed since the original vision of Ken Wood, but we think he would approve.

Championship Golf Course Old Thorns’ magnificent championship golf course ranges across the rolling hills of the North Hampshire countryside and offers fantastic views at every turn.

• Hole 1 – 343 yards, par 4

• Hole 2 – 499 yards, par 5

• Hole 3 – 441 yards, par 4

A short dog-leg par 4 to start. Long hitters aim straight over the marker post for an easy chip onto the green. Shorter hitters should aim for the bunker on the left to ensure their second shot is not blocked out by the beech tree on the right.

A long drive to the corner of the dog-leg is essential if this tight par 5 is to be reached in two. The entrance to the green is very narrow, though, so laying up is often the best option

The longest par 4 at Old Thorns plays every inch of its yardage. Aim to the left side of the big tree to open up the green for what will be a long second.

A beautiful tree-lined par 3 with most of the trouble being on the right. The slope on the left lends itself to a members’ bounce on to the long, narrow, sloping green.

A truly breath-taking view and one of the prettiest holes on the course. An iron off the tee for safety, aimed down the left, will open up a well-guarded green surrounded by water and trees.

The longest hole on the course and one of the trickiest to negotiate. The trees, tight on each side of the fairway, with Out Of Bounds left and right, funnel you into a very small and well protected green. Play your drive as close to the ditch as you can to see round the dog-leg for your second shot.

Club selection is vital here on this tight par 3, as the lake in front of the green will swallow anything mis-hit or short. The card might suggest this is the easiest hole on the course, but do not be disappointed with a par.

A long par 4 to the clubhouse. It is uphill all the way and always plays one more club than the yardage suggests. Once at the green a very tricky, two-tier putting surface awaits.

Avoid the water all the way down the right by playing well left off the tee. A mid-iron second shot is all you should have remaining to a small undulating green.

• Hole 8 – 371 yards, par 4 A short par 4 surrounded by water. The safe play is to take an iron off the tee aiming to the right of the tree to avoid water left and right. Take enough club for your second to clear the lake in front of the green.

• Hole 10 – 219 yards, par 3 The longest par 3 at Old Thorns and a true test of golfing ability. Play short or left and one of the two lakes awaits – play long or right and a tricky downhill chip back towards the water will be your reward.

• Hole 12 – 427 yards, par 4 A long and straight drive to the left of the bunker is required to be able to hit this long par 4 in two. Anywhere left with the second will find the hazard.

Whether using a driver or an iron for safety, correct placement off the tee is crucial. Any wayward tee shot left or right will block the approach to the very small plateaued green.

This par 5 is a very realistic birdie chance once you safely avoid the lake to the right off the tee. The main difficulty on this hole is the green, which slopes severely from back to front.

An iron off the tee is recommended to find the tight tree-lined fairway, leaving a short iron to a large two-tiered green. If putting from the top tier be careful not to putt off the green, or you may be 100 yards back down the fairway.

Club selection on this gorgeous par 3 is vital to ensure you hit the most treacherous green on the course. Keep the ball below the hole or run the very real risk of a three-putt.

A truly great par 4 to finish. A long hole with trees tight on either side of the fairway off the tee, followed by an uphill second shot over water to a well-guarded, sloping green in front of the clubhouse.

Whoever came up with the advice never to mix business with pleasure obviously had never heard of the corporate membership packages available at Old Thorns. The only exclusion to this is that they cannot enter club competitions, but this is more than compensated for by the extra perks available to corporate members.

Golf Days & Tournaments If you are a golfing society looking for a spectacular venue to take your members, or perhaps a tournament organiser, then Old Thorns will meet and far exceed your every expectation.

Our ability to organise a golf day was confirmed when we were chosen to host the Disabled British Open in 2009 and provided a truly memorable day for more than 100 golfers which was followed by a gala dinner for some 250 people. We appreciate no two events are the same and are delighted to offer a variety of packages to meet your requirements.

There are numerous options available. You can play 18, 27 or 36 holes in a day and can choose a two-tee start. If you want your guests to all be involved right from the start (and want them all back at around the same time), then we are delighted to be able to offer you a shotgun start.

We will provide Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive markers free of charge, trolleys and buggies are available for hire and you can buy tokens for the driving range from the club shop, which is always well stocked should you be looking for some quality golfing goods for the prize-giving at the end of the day.

Just as much attention to detail goes into meeting your off-course requirements and making sure your guests or golfing competitors leave satisfied. Start with breakfast which can range from tea or coffee and a bacon bap to a lavish buffetstyle full English breakfast. Our lunch offerings are numerous, from ploughmans

or soup and sandwiches to a three-course buffet lunch of barbecue, while the group can enjoy anything from a single to threecourse dinner. To complete the day in style, we can also offer a gala dinner in a private function room for anywhere between 80 and 300 people.

We are experts in tournament management if you are seeking a venue for an 18, 27 or 36-hole event and would like someone to ease the considerable burden and ensure the day goes without a hitch. We can provide an event documentation pack for each player, registration desk, preparation of scorecards, welcome announcements, a one-hour golf clinic for guests, scoring, presentation of results, prize-giving tables, PA system and lectern. Allowing us to take care of these details gives you the freedom to concentrate on your guests.

Our Learn to Love Golf Day is aimed at those new to golf and offers the perfect introduction to the game.

It’s then off to the course for a fun nine-hole tournament which is followed by lunch and a prize-giving. This offer is open to groups of six or more. Sets of clubs are available for hire from the Pro Shop.

Peter has been qualified for more than 34 years and, with the expertise he has gained over that time, is confident he can help all standards of golfers. It’s not just the able-bodied, either: Peter has also taught disabled players, quite fitting considering we were proud to host the Disabled British Open here in 2009.

Lessons can be 30 minutes or an hour, with a sixth one free if you book a course of five.

If you are just taking up the game, struggling for consistency or looking to lower your scores, Peter can put you on the right path, either on the range or out on the course.

He believes in teaching the individual - not a method - and will tailor the lesson so that you gain the maximum benefit from it. He

can also focus on the mental side of the game, an important ingredient to better golf that is often overlooked.

Practice Facilities In keeping with the rest of the facilities at Old Thorns being upgraded, there are plans to extend and improve our golf course practice area to make it one of the finest in the region.

The practice area is limited to irons at the moment, and while the satisfaction of booming 300 yard drives will have to wait until you take to the course, it still allows you to ensure you are striking the ball well and provides the opportunity to dial in your distances for your stroke-saving wedge shots.

This is also the area where Peter Chapman, our well-respected PGA Professional, can give you a lesson to iron out any problems with your game.

There is a practice putting green, which matches the condition of those out on the course and where you can adjust to their

speed without having to regret making a costly three-putt on the opening hole. There is also a Southwest Greens synthetic surface where you can practise your chipping.

Tokens for balls for the driving range are available to purchase from the Pro Shop.

Our facilities are having a makeover of their own in 2011 and are undergoing a complete refurbishment which we know will be hugely popular with our guests when it is complete in the autumn.

Our new indoor heated swimming pool will be greatly increased in size, offering even more scope for you to enjoy its crystal clear water for swimming, the fun of aqua aerobic classes and the soothing weightlessness of the water environment. Above the pool will be a new 650 sq ft gym featuring the latest cardiovascular equipment for individually tailored programmes in a nonintimidating environment.

In an exciting new development, the gym will be flanked by two brand new studios which will enable us to offer a full range of classes that could feature activities as diverse as yoga, body pump cardio strength workouts, body conditioning and martial arts. A full line-up of classes will only be decided when the studios are nearing completion, so check our website for details.

The spa is a popular destination for our guests and a perfect way to ease away the stresses of daily life. Gently unwind in the sauna or steam room or, if a little personal indulgence is more your style, pamper yourself with a massage, body therapy or beauty treatment. This area of the hotel will get a whole new wing in 2011, with the addition of new relaxation rooms to make your stay even more enjoyable.

How To Find Us Old Thorns is situated near Liphook in Hampshire, nine miles from Petersfield and 20 miles from Guildford. For satellite navigation purposes, our postcode is GU30 7PE. • BY ROAD Old Thorns is readily accessible from the A3 Portsmouth to London road. Take the Griggs Green exit, carry along Longmoor Road then take the second right into Old Thorns. (Approximately 35 minutes from Portsmouth).

From the M25 take the A3 southbound towards Portsmouth, exit at Griggs Green, carry along Longmoor Road and then take the second right into Old Thorns. (Approximately 35 minutes from the M25).

From the west. Take the A272 to Petersfield, pick up the A3 and head north, then following the directions above.

From the east, either take the A272 westbound through Midhurst and pick up the A3 northbound, or head north up the A283 from Petworth and after around seven miles bear left onto the B2131 Liphook Road. Stay on this road through the village on to Longmoor Road. After about a mile and a half, take a left turning which is signposted.

• BY AIR Old Thorns is less than one hour from Gatwick and Heathrow airports.

• Public transport The nearest railway station is Liphook, which is approximately two miles from the club and around a six-minute taxi journey away. One train an hour runs to Liphook from London Waterloo, more at peak times. Journey time is around an hour and generally involves changing at Haslemere.

From Portsmouth, there are two trains an hour.

The journey time on the faster, direct service is 45 minutes.
