Welcome

H

azlemere Golf Club and Conference Centre is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the heart of the Chiltern Hills of South Buckinghamshire, close to Beaconsfield and High Wycombe, just under 30 miles from Central London.

The 18-hole golf course is home to the magnificent Red Kites who soar over this visually stunning par 70 course. The views from the clubhouse and around the course are truly breathtaking all year round.

Hazlemere Golf Club is an ‘equal status’ members’ club with a reputation for being ‘the friendly club’. We pride ourselves on the warm welcome we give to players and visitors from all over the world.

It is here that as a junior Luke Donald learnt to play the game. Luke is now an Honorary Member and everyone at the club was extremely proud when he became first world No.1 and then the first man to top the European and US money lists in the same year in 2011.

The Hazlemere golf course offers a unique challenge, while our excellent clubhouse facilities make us a popular choice to host weddings and functions as well as meetings and conferences.

Our aim is simple, to provide warm hospitality and excellent food with an exceptional professional service.

Club History

H

azlemere Golf Course was in the first instance the idea of Dave Wanstall. He invited three like-minded friends Ron Luzar, Mick Curry, and Reg Carlisle to join him. He had always wanted to see a golf course in the Hazlemere area and when a parcel of land owned by The Earl Howe Estate (Inkerman Farm) came on the market in early 1981, the opportunity to bring the dream to reality presented itself.

The land went for auction in early 1981 and Mr Wanstall and his friends were successful in their bid. Wycombe District Council were very supportive of the planning application even though the land was ‘Farmland and within The Green Belt’.

The farmland lent itself to the contours of a golf course and the majority of the land’s natural features were retained. One of the original features was the avenue of lime trees which stretches from behind the 12th tee to behind the 1st green. It is believed that originally the avenue was a carriage drive used by Earl Howe and continued beyond where the 3rd tee is today and on to Penn House. The course is set in an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ right in the heart of The Chiltern Hills and wonderful views can be seen from the clubhouse and many other areas around the course.

The course opened in October 1982 with many mature trees and hedgerows already in place. This has resulted in the course maturing over a short period of time. Over the years some major changes have taken place but in the main these have been few and the course retains its original and unique character.

In 1983 the club changed hands and was purchased by Sarit Roy and his partners Andy Andrews and Harry Carlisle, Reg’s brother. Sarit was the major shareholder and Managing Director for 17 years until he sold the club to its members in 2000. He is still a playing member at Hazlemere.

From 1988 onwards the club held the annual Frankie Vaughan Classic, a charity golf day in support of the Boys Club and many show business celebrities played and supported these golf days. Frankie Vaughan, the well known entertainer, was a ‘local boy’ and also the president of the Boys Club.

This annual golf day still continues under its present day title of Action 4 Youth Golf Classic and raises much-needed funds for the charity.

(Continued) In 1986 Luke Donald joined Hazlemere Golf Club as a junior when he was only nine years old. This was at a time when juniors were not admitted as members of a golf club until they were at least 12 years old.

This enlightened attitude continues today and Hazlemere Golf Club is renowned for its development of junior golfers. Luke stayed for six years before moving on, and we at Hazlemere like to say “It was here that Luke Donald learnt his golf ”. He was made an Honorary Member of the club in 2000.

It just goes to show, early recognition of enthusiasm and talent plus giving children support and opportunity can make future PGA champions and a world No.1!

In 2000 the playing members of the club were given the opportunity to purchase the club. The response was overwhelming and on the 24th March, 2000 Hazlemere Golf Club became a “members’ club”.

The Course

H

azlemere Golf Club is set in 104 acres of the beautiful Chiltern Hills in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in South Buckinghamshire.

This 18-hole parkland golf course offers a unique opportunity for golfers of all abilities to experience golf in a wonderfully memorable setting.

The course has many mature trees that carve out each distinctive hole, two of which are protected by water hazards – shot selection here is critical to protecting a good score!

This pretty parkland course is undulating, giving the golfer uphill and downhill lies to examine their technique as well as providing a dilemma regarding club selection and distance control.

The course is set out in two loops of nine, both finishing in front of the clubhouse. It stretches to almost 6,000 yards off the white medals tees, just over 5,500 yards off the yellow tees and approximately 5,120 yards off the ladies’ (red) tees, all with a par of 70.

With two par 5s and two par 3s, the par score for the outward nine is 36. The inward nine has three memorable par 3s, and one par 5, the 14th. The short holes aside, five of the other six holes on the back nine are ranked as among the eight hardest on the card, so to come home in better than the par of 34 for the second half of the course is an achievement indeed.

Whilst Hazlemere is not a long course, it does offer a fair test due to the nature of the terrain and you can certainly sharpen up your short game - just as it did for Luke Donald!

Greens are relatively large and inviting and some of them are undulating. They can be fast but run true, a fact noted by the players who took part in the Ladies European Tour Access Series Open, an event we were proud to host in August 2011 which featured many up-and-coming, as well as established, lady professional players.

Take a moment to acquaint yourself with some of the key holes, as seen through the eyes of Gavin Cousins and Christian Carsberg, our PGA Professional team.

Hole 3 (Moorhens), 156 yards, par 3 This sloping green has to be reached by driving over a wildlife pond and makes for a very accurate tee shot. An uphill putt is preferable as downhill can be very tricky!

Hole 6 (Chestnut Drive), 387 yards, par 4

Hole 15 (The Sentries), 228 yards, par 3

Hole 18 (Pond Approach), 291 yards, par 4

This downhill hole, stroke index 2, is a dog-leg to the left. It is possible to cut the corner by going over the tree and the reward for those accomplishing the feat is having an approach from quite close to the green. However, trouble (in the form of conifers) awaits if your shot goes awry. For the less bold, the ball tends to run away to the right, leaving a longer second shot. The approach is tricky, with trouble to the right of the green and conifers at the back.

A long par 3, especially if there is a headwind, and requires a fine tee shot if you want to make par. The green slopes down towards the bunker on the left making the tee shot even more critical and watch out for The Sentries that guard the green!

The signature hole of the course. An accurate drive is preferable as there is a gentle right-to-left sloping fairway which can gather the ball towards the trees on the left.

The second shot entails a pitch over the pond with bunkers to the right that protect the green. This green has a steep two-tiered contour across the centre so you will need to finish with a flourish!

Practice Facilities

L

earning new skills and then practising them until they become second nature is the way to improve in any sporting pursuit and golf is no different.

You can have it all here at Hazlemere, expert tuition from our talented professional team, a superb course that throws up a new and different challenge each time you play it and the use of some outstanding practice facilities to work on any area of your game you are seeking to strengthen.

There is a practice ground on the righthand side as you drive up to the club, where members can bring their own balls and hit shots of up to 100 yards. There are targets here to keep practice focused and interesting.

For those looking to hit longer-shafted clubs, the practice ground near to the 14th tee is around 170 yards in length. Again for members, the natural turf teeing area affords far more accurate feedback on how an individual is hitting the ball, simply by watching ball flight and observing the divot pattern.

The quickest way for the higher handicapper to lower their scores is by sharpening up their short game, and there is an area dedicated to this end to the right of the 1st hole, where players can chip or pitch to a green which also has a practice bunker alongside.

There are two brand-new nets near the short game area and an excellent practice putting green right outside the front of the clubhouse.

Becoming a Member

azlemere Golf Club is a private Members’ Club with a welldeserved reputation for being ‘the friendly club’. All categories of members are welcome: Ladies, Men,Young Adults and Juniors and all new members are made to feel welcome from day one.

We have qualifying and non-qualifying competitions, matches against other clubs and many roll-up groups you could join so you won’t be a new member for long.

The categories of membership are designed to accommodate all levels of golfers, from beginners to scratch players and with a smooth progression from Junior to Full Adult Membership.

Three junior rates (under 12, 12-15, and 16-17) offer attractive discounts as do the two Intermediate (18-22 and 23-24) age brackets and there are also special memberships for young adults aged 25-27 and 28-29.

Even the full membership rate equates to less than you would pay to play on the vast majority of municipal courses just once a week and here you can play as often as you want on a course that is regarded as one of the best in the region.

Playing Categories

M

embers at Hazlemere enjoy a full programme of competitions throughout the year, both playing against each other and at home and away against other clubs. Whatever the fixture, matches are always keenly contested but played in a friendly and amicable manner.

The Men’s Section has a number of friendly matches against other local golf clubs as well as Chiltern Breakfast League Matches and members are encouraged to put their names forward to play in these

matches as they are a great way to play different courses and enjoy a relaxing meal afterwards in convivial company.

Ladies

Junior boys with a CONGU handicap are eligible to play in Men’s competition except for Senior competitions.

The Ladies have their own committee elected every year to represent the interests of the Ladies’ Section. They run a full calendar of qualifying competitions which are played on a Wednesday and Saturday.

Some special board and trophy competitions are played on a Sunday.

In addition to the qualifying competitions the Ladies’ Section runs many ‘fun’ or team competitions on a Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Junior girls with a CONGU handicap are eligible to play in any of the Ladies’ competitions.

Like their male counterparts, the Ladies also enjoy a number of friendly matches against other local clubs and again participation is actively encouraged, with everyone who wants to enjoy the experience of one of these fixtures being given the opportunity to do so. Some of these matches are played at

the weekend so our Business Ladies have an opportunity to participate in club matches as well.

In addition to the friendly matches, Ladies also participate in the Bucks County Leagues - Winter League, Silver Scratch League and Bronze Scratch League. The Ladies’ Committee also runs the Mixed Fun Competitions and Mixed Matches which are normally played on Sundays and these are great social events and an excellent way to meet fellow members.

The Lady Veterans’ Representative on the committee runs the Lady Veterans’ competitions on a Monday morning and any lady aged 55 years or over is welcome to turn up on a Monday morning and join this very active section of the club. In addition the Lady Veterans’ Representative runs the Mixed Veterans’ Competitions and matches against Lady Veterans from other local golf clubs.

The Veterans have their own annual Christmas Dinner and Prize Giving which is held in the clubhouse, generally at the end of November. It is a very popular event which is always very well attended.

A popular recent new addition to the golfing calendar is the Veterans’ Inter-Club Challenge, an annual event held in August at Hazlemere which features the host club and several of our neighbours in a day of fierce but fun competition for the numerous team and individual prizes on offer.

As well as playing in their section’s own events, the Veterans also take part in several

Juniors

H

azlemere has a very active Junior Section where course etiquette and courtesy to others is taught as well as the techniques of golf.

Hazlemere has been accredited with the GolfMark Award as a result of its work with Juniors and Beginners. The award, which is independently audited and run by the English Golf Union, recognises the quality of the coaching programme at Hazlemere, together with the club’s comprehensive and coherent Child Protection policies.

The Junior Organizer runs a full calendar of qualifying and fun competitions throughout the year which are played either on a Saturday afternoon during term-time or during the school holidays.

Junior boys are also eligible to play in Men’s competitions and Junior girls are eligible to play in Ladies’ competitions.

The Junior Organizer is supported by the Junior Captain, Junior Match Organizer, Junior Vice Captain, Junior Past Captain and three Junior Members who meet regularly to ensure the smooth running of the Section.

Juniors also play matches against other local clubs in the Isis League, which they won in 2008.

The Pro Shop provides a comprehensive range of equipment as well as being able to arrange golf lessons and prizes. We can also organise longest drive and nearest the pin markers should you wish.

We have several ready-made packages available (see below for examples), but please also note that we are happy to customise a day to your society’s exact requirements.

For instance, Coffee and Bacon Rolls can be substituted for a Full English Breakfast upon payment of a small additional supplement, likewise a light Ploughman’s or sandwich lunch can be substituted for the Pub Lunch and a Starter or Dessert can be added to the Pub Lunch.

he Clubhouse is open to the general public as well as members and offers great comfort and a welcoming atmosphere in which to socialise and relax. The bar is well stocked with Fullers and provides a wide selection of draught beers and lagers. We also have an excellent selection of wines and spirits as well as a choice of nonalcoholic beverages. Hazlemere also supports the local Rebellion brewery in Marlow and a variety of real ales are on sale throughout the year.

The catering is on par with the excellent golf course and hot and cold food is served daily, seven days a week. How To Find & Contact Us Hazlemere Golf Club is situated in the village of Hazlemere in Buckinghamshire a few hundred yards from the Hazlemere crossroads on the Penn Road (B474) to Beaconsfield.

For satellite navigation purposes our postcode is HP15 7LR. Directions From London on the M40 From Junction 2 on the M40 take the A355 to Beaconsfield. Take the 1st exit at the 1st roundabout and the 1st exit at the second roundabout which will take you to Beaconsfield Old Town. At the next roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the B474 and follow the signs to Hazlemere.The entrance to the golf club is half a mile up on the right after the Hazlemere sign.

From Oxford on the M40 From Junction 4 on the M40 take the A404 to High Wycombe and then follow the Amersham signs. At the centre of Hazlemere village take the B474 road to Beaconsfield. The entrance to the golf club is a few hundred yards up on the left.

Public Transport The nearest railway station is High Wycombe, which is around two and a half miles, or a seven-minute taxi ride away.

Chiltern Railways run frequent services from High Wycombe to London Marylebone.

Journey time on the fastest service is around 29 minutes. Birmingham and the Midlands can be reached with a change at Banbury.
