Welcome Hartley Wintney is a friendly, members’ club, situated in the beautiful North East Hampshire countryside, on the edge of the rural town of Hartley Wintney. The club has been providing enjoyable golf for more than 100 years and is the ideal location for a relaxing game of golf in tranquil surroundings with many mature trees and water hazards. The course is easily reached from the M3 and M4 and is close to the borders of Berkshire, Surrey and Hampshire.
The club is the ideal setting to recharge your batteries and to escape from the stresses of daily life and we are also a popular venue for functions such as birthday parties or anniversary celebrations. Hartley Wintney is an 18 hole, par-71 parkland and wooded course measuring 6,240 yards. The layout has been carefully designed to provide a challenge for golfers of all standards. Our hospitable and friendly staff very much look forward to welcoming you.

History Hartley Wintney Golf Club came into being in the late 19th century, being registered with R&A in 1891). Situated close to the centre of the village, it began life as a nine-hole parkland course intended for use of employees of the Elvetham estate. Financial necessity, however, soon led to people who resided in the village, but had hitherto been excluded through social disqualification, being invited to join. The club also took the unusual step at that time of appointing Miss H.B. Jones, as its Honorary Secretary, ensuring that lady members were voted a voice in the management of the club.

Miss Jones, subsequently the wife of local G.P. Dr Cox, was to remain an active member for at least 25 years. In the early years, the course was referred to as a golf links and, in keeping with the popular practice of the time, had named holes. These ranged from the 7th, ‘Wellingtonia’ of only 57 yards, to the 9th, ‘Lake’, which was the longest hole on the course at 358 yards. The course was only 1,967 yards long, playing to a bogey score of 38. The Lord Calthorpe of Elvetham Park is believed to have been the club’s first president.
Falling membership was already giving cause for concern and with the outbreak of the First World War dealing a further crippling blow to the club’s finances it was decided to wind up Hartley Wintney Golf Club.
Initially, the club rented a cottage, across the road from the present first tee, for use as a clubroom, before a first clubhouse was built, believed to be have been around the time that the club reopened after the War.
The club remained closed for five years, reopening in 1920, the decade which saw Billy Butt join as club professional. Mr Butt was a very popular figure and gifted teacher of the game, who was to remain in his position for 45 years, retiring in 1969.
Facilities were basic, to say the very least, with no thought given to such ‘luxuries’ as running water. There was excitement in the club in the early 1950s at the move of the headquarters to the White Lion Hotel at Hartford Bridge.

History Continued... However, when this building was sold not long afterwards, the club went back to its original site where it has remained to this day. Energy was invested in improving the clubhouse facilities over the ensuing years, with the year 2000 providing the perfect opportunity to ensure the club was equipped to embrace the new Millennium, with a major expansion of the clubhouse and superb new facilities being introduced at the same time as the course was extended to 18 holes.
Some famous golfers have called Hartley Wintney home over the years, none more so than Stanley J Fox, who in 1950 won the News of the World Artisan Championship, now the Amateur Stroke Play Championship, a feat of much esteem both then and now.

The Course The original golf course was built in 1891 as a nine-hole parkland course in a traditional layout offering testing golf for all participants. In 2000 an additional 9 holes were added and it now offers a well laid out variation of both traditional and new designs. The new holes have now established themselves alongside the original course to offer a good test of golf in a relaxed environment. On the following pages you can take the course tour to gain insight into our key holes and pick up some playing tips along the way. The front 9 is deemed to be the easier of the two. Try to make your score and then hang on through the back 9 holes.
Hole 1 The 1st hole offers a welcoming start to your round, a short uphill par 4 can be played in two ways by laying back with an iron or taking on the slope part way up the fairway. The risk can yield good rewards with a short chip onto the green but beware of bunkers for shots that are not hit perfectly. Hole 4 The 4th is the first of the longer par 4s. From the medal tee it is a tough test for any golfer. A gentle dogleg left, it requires length and accuracy off the tee if you want to give yourself a good chance of par. The green is large but slopes away from you so even a good second shot is tough to hold.

The Course Continued... Holes 5 & 6 The 5th and 6th holes are straight par 4s but good placement of water hazards and trees necessitates caution off the tee. You can be led into a false sense of security. These holes are not to be taken lightly; they can show their teeth to all but the most accurate of shots. Hole 8 The 8th is a par 5 that allows you to open your shoulders. There is an option for the big hitters to cut the corner but large trees protect any shot that is not struck perfectly. If you can hit a high fade then this hole will suit you well.
Hole 9 The 9th is a downhill par 3. A large bunker all across the front of the green protects the hole from imperfect approach shots. The mature trees on either side focus your attention. Hole 10 The 10th is a long uphill par 5. It starts with a tee shot through a tunnel of trees and demands a straight long shot. A ditch at about 170 yards gives you a decision to make. The hole then opens up to a wide fairway but a hidden green means that you have to be very careful with your approach shot. You need to use the yardage chart to give you an accurate judge of distances.

The Course Continued... Hole 12 The 12th has an oak tree situated at the midpoint of the dogleg left. Long hitters can drive past the oak for the opportunity to attack the elevated green. Higher handicappers score well by playing their second shot to the level part of the fairway 100 yards short of the green. Hole 13 The 13th is rated as the most difficult hole on the course. The elevated tee offers an inviting drive but water on the left and right demand accuracy. The only way to reach the green in two is with a great drive and an even better second shot. Watch out for the ditch behind the green.
Hole 14 The 14th offers little respite. It is a longer par 3 with water short and right of the green. Many will require a fairway metal but the rewards are there for anyone who reaches the green. Hole 16 The 16th is a short par 5 with well-positioned ditches. The brave can take a driver which gives the opportunity to go for the green in two, but water left and out of bounds right offer significant defence. The not so brave are left with a long iron third shot into a raised green with bunkers short and left. A highly sloped green ensures this is not a hole to be taken lightly.

The Course Continued... Hole 17 The 17th is a lovely par 3 protected by a channel of trees and a small green. One of the original holes, this is a gem and most people’s favourite hole on the course.
Hole 18 The 18th is as tough a final hole as you will find anywhere. The elevated tee looks out to the fairway which doglegs right. Trees on the right and a ditch on the left mean accuracy is a must but length is required if you are going to take on the green. Bunkers to the right of the green offer extra protection. This hole can prove to be a sting in the tail of any good round of golf.

The Professional Team The Head Professional at Hartley Wintney Golf Club is Martin Smith, a popular figure with members and a welcoming face for visitors who has been at the club since 1990. Martin turned professional as soon as he left school in 1975, becoming Assistant Professional at StantonOn-The-Wolds Golf Club in Nottinghamshire. In 1979 he moved back to his home club, Mendip Golf Club in Somerset so he could pursue his playing ambitions.
Martin says: “The Club has grown over the time I have been here and I have been fortunate to have some input into the course design and the running of the Club. I have seen the game go through many changes. I have a great passion for teaching the game and like all Professional golfers I am still learning about new techniques in so many aspects of the game.�
In 1983 he became senior assistant at Farnham Golf Club in Surrey before becoming Head Professional at Alton Golf Club in Hampshire, a position he held for five years before joining Hartley Wintney.

Practice Facilities Hartley Wintney is committed to offering its members all the facilities possible to enable members the chance to become as proficient at this great game of golf as their talent and application allows. As well as the highly-regarded tuition on offer from our professional team, there are several areas where players can work on ingraining new swing thoughts or turning previously weaker areas of the game into strengths. A driving range more than 200 yards in length can be found to the left of the clubhouse. This offers the best of both worlds as there are mats for when the weather is inclement but also the opportunity to hit off turf, which gives the improving player much better feedback on how they are truly striking the ball.
Open to Hartley Wintney members and to members of the public paying a green fee on the day, those wishing to use the facility bring their own balls. There are yardage markers at 100, 150 and 200 yards allowing for focused practice. The short game is not overlooked, either, with a chipping green and bunker right next to the practice area enabling the dedicated player the chance to work on those round-saving shots around the green. An inviting nine-hole putting green can be found next to the first tee, while for those looking to get loose before taking to the course there are also two practice nets.

Juniors For young people looking for a friendly and welcoming first club at which to learn the game, there can be few better choices than Hartley Wintney. Junior improvement programmes can be created to suit the needs and aspirations of each individual and there are also beginner classes aimed at teaching children the basics to enable them to get out and enjoy the game as quickly as possible. Learning sound fundamentals at an early age means many years of frustration on the course later in life can be avoided!
Children upwards of eight years of age are taught every shot in the game, as well as the basic necessities such as rules and etiquette. Should the child show aptitude, they would be encouraged to become a junior member at the club, offering competitions and camaraderie playing against youngsters of their own age and against other clubs in local leagues. Our younger members are given every encouragement as we appreciate our juniors are Hartley Wintney’s full members of the future and without them we would ultimately have no club.

Visitors Visitors are extended a warm welcome at Hartley Wintney Golf Club. Whilst there are few restrictions as to times when visitors can play it is always advisable to check with the Pro Shop by calling 01252 844211 where the friendly staff will be pleased to assist you in arranging a suitable tee time. Groups of less than 16 can be accommodated at most times on a green fee basis. You will find that the course provides an interesting challenge for golfers of all abilities. The country atmosphere lends itself to a relaxing game of golf in pleasant surroundings and will help you to banish the stresses of everyday life.
The well-equipped Pro Shop adjacent to the clubhouse will allow you to stock up on consumables and to browse the wide range of golf equipment and clothing. The staff can arrange for one-to-one tuition should you wish to brush up your skills before play. Golf trolleys and buggies are available for hire. There is also a practice range, practice net, chipping area and putting green to warm up prior to your game. After the game, the clubhouse has a pleasant bar and comfortable lounge where you can relax with your playing companions. A full range of catering facilities is also available. Guests are asked to conform to a dress code which is normal for golf clubs.

The Clubhouse The Clubhouse was considerably enlarged as part of the 18-hole course extension and opened in 2000. It provides members, guests and visitors with excellent changing facilities for ladies and gents and a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere in which to relax and socialise before and after golf. The bar is well stocked with a selection of beers, wines, and spirits and an extensive choice of non-alcoholic alternatives. Golfers and guests can enjoy drinks and light snacks in the Lounge Bar, the Casual (Stud) Bar, or weather permitting, out on the patio overlooking the 18th green. A lovely spot to spend some time on a sunny day, it will come as no surprise to learn that barbeques are a popular feature of summer months at Hartley Wintney. 42

The club is situated in the heart of Hartley Wintney, adjacent to the A30. We are within easy reach of both junctions 4a and 5 of the M3 only 15 minutes from Camberley and Basingstoke. Directions From Camberley - Take the A30 westbound towards Basingstoke and the entrance to the club will be on the left just before you reach Hartley Wintney. Alternatively, take the M3 (see below). From Basingstoke - Take the A30 eastbound towards Camberley and the entrance to the club will be on the right just after you have driven through Hartley Wintney. Alternatively, take the M3. From the North - Take the A327 or the B3349 to join the A30, before heading for Hartley Wintney.
From the South - Take the A323 Reading/Fleet Road, turning right when meeting the junction with the A30. From the M3 Junction 5 - After exiting the motorway, take the 2nd exit at the roundabout on to Griffin Way S/ B3349. Take the 1st exit at the next roundabout on to Station Rd and the third exit and the following roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto London Rd (A30) before following the directions in “From Basingstoke” above. From the M3 Junction 4a - After exiting the motorway, take the 2nd exit onto Minley Rd/A327. Follow this road until it intersects with the A30 and then turn left, following the directions in “From Camberley” above. Public transport - The nearest station is Winchfield, which is around two miles away. Services run approximately every half hour to Basingstoke and London.
