The Club was opened for play in 1936 and offers first-class parkland golf. The course has steadily evolved since that date and provides a challenging yet ultimately rewarding test of golf in beautiful natural surroundings.

The course found instant success but the outbreak of the Second World War saw the fairways of the new second nine ploughed up for cereal production, eventually being restored for play in 1949. The farmer who had cultivated and reaped the harvest during that time presented the Club with the Harvest Cup to be competed for annually.

History Designed by J. H. Turner, the then professional at Frilford Heath Golf Club, the first nine holes of Burford course were opened for play in May of 1936. Construction of the second nine holes commenced in late 1936 and completion was made in remarkably short time with the official opening on 30th September 1937.

With the original clubhouse being demolished in 1964 to make way for the present roundabout at the junction of the A40 and A361 roads, the new clubhouse opened on 29th February 1964. From then until the present time, the building has grown with varying alterations and extensions within the constraints of limited space, but able to cater for the busiest days in the Club diary and to provide a warm welcome for visitors.

Early aerial photographs clearly show a course devoid of trees but members and visitors today see a course with tree-lined fairways that are always in good condition and a delight to play.

The Ultimate Local Chauffeur.

The course is fairly flat and although not long, it does offer a comfortable round for golfers of all ages and handicaps. It measures 6,401 yards from the white medal tees and 6,078 from the yellow tees, playing to a par of 71. Although the ladies par is 73, the length from the red tees of 5,768 yards means this is still a very good test.

The greens are a joy to play on, and in addition to being incredibly smooth they are very consistentlypaced and true from day to day and week to week.

The Course Burford is blessed with an outstanding golf course considered to be amongst the best in the county.

While Burford has 18 signature holes, one of the most eye-catching is the 14th. It is lined by a great variety of trees and in spring and autumn the walk down from tee to green is absolutely spectacular.

The closing three-hole stretch consists of three very difficult par fours and sets up an exciting finish to the round. No lead is safe in matchplay or strokeplay until this trio of holes is safely negotiated and players must keep their wits about them right to the end.

Our PGA-qualified professional Mike Ridge is on hand to provide expert tuition whenever you need it. Mike’s teaching is backed up by some fine practice facilities including a large practice ground and a chipping area which allow you to invest time working on the new techniques he has taught you.

Currently, there is approximately a two to threeyear wait for male members and less than 12 months for ladies. We are equally popular with our younger membership and there is a waiting list of approximately 12 months for boys.

Normally, we ask that you provide a proposer and seconder at the time of your invitation to join the Club. At that point, your proposer and seconder will be required to sign the Application Form to confirm their willingness to act.

Both the proposer and seconder must have known the candidate personally and be willing to act as sponsors for the candidate’s correct conduct if and when the candidate becomes a member of the Club.

Becoming a Member Membership at Burford Golf Club is currently fully subscribed and the Club is in the enviable position of having to employ a waiting list for prospective members.

In the event that you are unable to supply a proposer and seconder then the Club will consider the submission of a golfing letter of introduction. An application form for consideration for Full Playing Membership can be completed and submitted via our website, www.burfordgolfclub.co.uk The standard Full Playing Membership is for golfers aged 30 and over. Discounts are offered in three Young Adult categories (aged 18-22, 23-25 and 2629) and also in the two Junior memberships (aged 9-12 and 13-17). The men play a variety of matches throughout the year and enter a team in the Shaw Gibbs Oxfordshire Foursomes League, a competition they won in 2011.

There are regular friendly matches for men and also for our very active Seniors Section.

Our gentlemen also take part in other county competitions organised by the Berks, Bucks & Oxon (BB&O) Union of Golf Clubs, such as the Hillman Trophy, an inter-club knockout competition.

Members’ Golf Members at Burford enjoy a full programme of competitions throughout the year, both playing against each other and at home and away against other clubs. Whatever the fixture, matches are always keenly contested but played in a friendly and amicable manner.

The ladies are similarly active, enjoying monthly stableford and medal events within the Club in addition to entering competitions runs by the Oxfordshire Ladies’ County Golf Association. These include the President’s and Captain’s Inter-Club trophies, a pair of club foursomes knockout events played throughout the season.

Burford plays against local clubs in both the Alliance and the Bronze leagues, both of which features a series of fixtures throughout the season. In addition, there are numerous friendly fixtures.

We are very pleased to have been accredited with the GolfMark award by England Golf as a result of achieving a high standard in the coaching environment and in our care and protection of children.

Juniors Burford Golf Club is pleased to have a thriving Junior Section containing both boys and girls. There is currently a waiting list for boys.

The Junior Section actively participates in the Oxfordshire Junior League which features matches either home or away against the other eight member clubs. This gives our younger members valuable competitive experience that hopefully will stand them in good stead throughout their golfing life. The Club also runs an active schedule of competitive events internally including medals, stablefords and trophy competitions, with a presentation evening taking place at the end of the season around early October.

Coaching is provided by our PGA Professional, Mike Ridge, and his staff and many coaching sessions are free to Junior members. Youngsters are not only given a fine grounding in the basics of the game, but also learn about the equally important areas of golf such as etiquette and rules.

In general, it is advisable to telephone the Pro Shop in advance on 01993 822344 to check availability as we have a full diary during the main part of the season with visiting societies, inter-club matches and Members’ competitions often being held.

There are two starting points, the first and tenth holes and this generally allows the course to remain open for members and visitors whilst booked events, such as matches, tee-off from one of the start points. Whilst we do not insist on handicap certificates we do ask that our visitors can play to an adequate standard. Furthermore, we ask that they understand the etiquette of the game and the Rules of Golf.

Information for Visitors Although a private Members’ Club, Burford welcomes visitors and will try to accommodate any individual or small groups wishing to play. We can also accept County Card users.

Mobile phones are not allowed on the course or in the Clubhouse. We have a dress code at the Club, details of which can be found on our website, www.burfordgolfclub.co.uk, and ask that you follow it. Please note that denim jeans are not allowed.

No visitors are allowed before 2pm on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday or Sunday.

As a measure of the popularity of golf days at Burford, many of our visiting groups have been with us for many years. If you have a specific day in mind, then early booking is essential. Most societies take the opportunity of booking for the following year immediately following their round!

Burford not only possesses a course that discerning golfers wish to return to play time and time again, but this is complemented by a superb catering and bar facility. The majority of our public rooms were recently renovated to a very high standard and offer comfortable yet relaxed surroundings. Our staff assure you and your visiting group of a very warm welcome.

Society Golf Days Burford is host to many visiting societies during the course of a year and we offer excellent facilities for such days. We are extremely fortunate to have an attractive yet playable course, with superb greens and fairways that are a pleasure to play on.

Societies are accepted on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. There are some opportunities for society booking on Tuesday afternoons.

We normally reserve tees from 8.30am and 1.30pm for 36 holes or 10am and 1.30pm for 27 holes.

Afternoon starts are preferred for 18-hole groups.

The formats of the competitions can vary slightly from year to year, but generally we like to host at least five events.

The season starts with one of the year’s main events – our ProAm. This event is now almost unique in its format of 36-hole medal foursomes and, as a result, attracts a large entry from all over the country. We then hold the Seniors’ Open at the end of May, which tends to be a pairs betterball competition.

The Captain’s Charity Day, held around early July, features four per team playing a Stableford format, while in the middle of July there is a Mixed Open, which is an 18-hole greensomes medal.

Open Competitions Burford Golf Club is always delighted to showcase its outstanding course and offers golfers of all abilities the opportunity to play here in a series of Open competitions which are held throughout the year.

July also features a Juniors’ Open, a 36-hole scratch event for younger golfers and there are Open competitions for both Ladies (18 holes) and Men (36 holes) in August.
