In this edition of the Philippine Robotics Team 2021 Journal, we commemorate what these youngsters have accomplished and how they triumphed over the hurdles posed by the pandemic. We are united in our faith that better times are on the way, and we are resolved to apply what we have learned from these trying circumstances to the brighter future that awaits us.

This issue is also the product of a joint effort by students and coaches who volunteered their time and effort to share their experiences and submit articles to the journal.

When it comes to the potential of covid19 variants appearing here and there, there is no such thing as being too careful.

Let us all continue to be vigilant and aware of measures on how to make ourselves safe and healthy throughout 2022. This is an excellent opportunity to get more acquainted with numerous social media tools for staying in contact, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Viber, Zoom, and even TikTok. Regardless of the social media site you like, you are aware that there is always a way to stay in touch.

As the COVID-19 hits the entire world in 2020, we temporarily halted with our usual daily lives. There was massive online activities and virtual digital communication exploded in every gadget we have. These phenomenal changes and our experiences may not be the best that we could have but these events once more tested our resilience, creativity, innovativeness and faith as Filipinos that in any circumstance, Hope still floats. We Saved our Hope and We continue to fight an enemy we could never see. Technology served a critical role in this challenging time. The emergence of Artificial Intelligence is further enhanced with the demand for more services without human interaction, hence, the rise of the machines, more sophisticated ones. As you further explore and dive deeper in finding ways to integrate the concept of Robotics in this changing world, let it be a guiding principle that Humanity still exists. That machines are secondary to the existence of human life, that every bolt and screw are meant to not just perhaps make living more convenient and practical or reach for the moon and stars but should also alleviate poverty and hunger and promote economic equality. We FilipinX are known for our strong spirit despite the most difficult times. No matter how hard, we rise from the ashes. We are the phoenix, because we believe. Don’t stop believing.

The year 2021 just ended and we now welcome year 2022. On behalf of De La Salle Santiago Zobel School Robotics Unit, thank you for the great experiences and amazing Robotics events with Data Science and Technology Corporation (DSTC).

I would like to congratulate all the Robotics studentparticipants. Despite the challenges, you were able to foster creativity by maximizing each other’s knowledge and expanding your resources. It is evident that each one of you initiated enthusiasm for learning and resourcefulness, especially the new set up is totally different from what we used to do in a face to face set up. Each one of you showed determination and drive. Through hard work, you were able to contribute so much. With what you have accomplished, hard work complemented with the desire to achieve the goals.

We know that there is no short cut to success. According to Judy Collins, “I think people who are creative are the luckiest people on earth. I know that there are no shortcuts, but you must keep your faith in something Greater than You, and keep doing what you love. Do what you love, and you will find the way to get it out to the world”.

Bjorn is a multi-skilled Grade 11 student of DLSZ who takes part in activities from robotics to math to chess to student council to religious organizations, there’s almost nothing he hasn’t tried. Even though he gets numerous achievements and recognitions, he still dedicates his time to help those in need and share his knowledge and skills with other people.

Brix is a well-rounded Grade 6 student of DLSZ. Even at his young age, he has already excelled in the fields of robotics, math, and chess. With a sense of compassion, he always wants to help the less fortunate and spread robotics to his fellow youth.

I am Mark Andrei M. Rivera, a robotics enthusiast, and proud member of the Bacoor Robotics Society. I started participating in Robotics Competitions in 9th Grade, since then, I have joined numerous competitions in different categories. My experience in Robotics taught me a lot of valuable lessons, and has greatly enhanced my mechanical skills. I was blessed to be given the opportunity to participate in International Competitions, like the World Robot Games and All Japan Robotics Sumo Tournament.

Innovation Corner: Smart Exhaust Fan

Liquefied Petroleum Gas or simply LPG is a common cooking gas found in Filipino households but when released through a gas leak, it becomes detrimental to the environment and the body.

There have been many instances wherein LPG leaks caused fatal explosions and accidents in the Philippines.

This led me and my robotics partner to come up with an innovative idea that could reduce the probability of these accidents from occurring, and improve home and school safety against LPG leaks. To do this, we decided to create an Arduino-based automatic exhaust fan, which we appropriately called SEF - stands for Smart Exhaust Fan, that is equipped with gas sensors that both detects and eliminates the presence of LPG in the air.

It wasn't simply a prototype development, we decided to make it into a research study for our Research Class, with the assistance of some of our classmates. Arduino-based Automatic Exhaust Fans aren't clean sheet ideas, in the internet alone, there are already plenty of similar studies.

However, our study may not be that unique in terms of design, but the method of testing the system was. Past studies and literature only tested the functionality of their Automatic Exhaust Fans, whether their systems' parts and programs function as designed or needed.

In our case, we checked both functionality and performance. This was done by simulating, as closely as we could, the actual conditions of a gas leak occurring an enclosed room. This method tests the systems response and detection rate, important variables when determining its effectivity and efficiency. It's also important to check not only the performance, but also the acceptability of a prototype to the public.

We demonstrated SEF in front of teachers from our school, and have them rate our design based on its effectivity, efficiency, and acceptability. From there responses, we concluded that SEF, or our Smart Exhaust Fan, is effective, efficient and acceptable.

DLSZ & DLSAU's BIG WIN in FIRA2021 It was a spectacular victory for the Philippine Robotics Team, which took home the First Place Award in the Business and Innovation Category of the FIRA Brazil 2021.

The triumphant team was composed of students from the De La Salle Santiago Zobel (DLSZ) School, namely Bjorn Isaac Escalona and Eddrian Costes, and De La Salle Araneta University (DLSAU) namely Tobias Simon De Leon. They called their entry TacTechAI, a smart solution vest to help combat the spread of the Covid 19 disease.

Dr. Genevieve Pillar, the De La Salle Santiago Zobel School's institutional Robotics Coordinator, was equally jubilant with the team's success. Before the live robot project demonstration, Dr. Pillar put the team under a series of practice demonstrations and critique sessions.

Philippines Bagged Silver and Technical Awards at the 23rd International Robot Olympiad -Korea

In the first leg of the 23rd IRO Korea Online, eight Philippine Robotics Team delegates managed to win medals: 3 Silver and 5 technical awards. The teams from MGC New Life Christian Academy and Narvacan National Central High School won Silver Medals in the Physical Computing and Robot in Movie Challenge categories respectively.

The 23rd IRO will resume with the 2nd batch of competition on January 17-20, 2022.

The DSTC opens up a chance for students to apply and evaluate their abilities in Arduino C and Creative Robotics via the Robotics Coding Camp and Competition {R3C}.

The contest is available to everyone, including those who will not attend the camp as they have the option to pick Contest Only Participation. For those who plan to study coding and enroll, the session begins on February 5, 2022.

Why do we encourage students to join competitions such as the {R3C}?

Participating in competitions can help learners obtain practical experience, demonstrate their talents, investigate and assess their triumphs and mistakes, and identify their own unique potential.

Competitions also assist to push individuals to extend their ideas and strengthen their analytical abilities. They help to motivate students to broaden their perspectives and sharpen their logical thinking skills.

He raised his hand quickly and screamed, “Baymax!”. Beaming with delight, this small kid of approximately 10 years old was excited about any thought of robot.

Absolutely nothing beats the enthusiasm of 3rd and 4th graders as they pay attention to anything you put up in the air, their cheeks light up with wonder as they listen to stories about new inventions, and their eagerness to follow directions quickly without complain.

However, the situation is rather different when working with older groups of learners or even adult groups. Each participant attending a robotics class has a distinct goal and varying reactions to the items you exhibit to them. You just need to be aware of the kind of individuals you will be dealing with in advance so that you may provide the necessary incentive to make the activity more productive.

From my experience, I often categorize participants based on the reason for their enlistment in the activity, regardless of their age group bracket. There is nothing formal about this classification and each category is not mutually exclusive. It' is only a mental note to help me come up with ideas as how to offer an incentive or prescribe the next set of processes to pursue in the future.

The Curious The Curious - these participants are interested in a wide range of topics, but are especially interested in things they see on television or in movies and want to know how things work. Their interests might vary from reverse engineering new toys to learning how animals live in tough environments to discovering why some foods taste strange to learning about military weaponry. And they are often drawn

to robotics because they have seen advanced robots or humanoids in movies and are intrigued as to how they function in real life.

Strengths: Enthusiasm,

Attentiveness, Inquisitiveness Weaknesses: Impatience, impulsivenes Recommendation After giving them an initial dose of basic robot mechanics and controls, you must be on the lookout for their next moves, as they are frequently the ones who accidentally burn microcontrollers or short circuit the terminals because of unsupervised experimentation, which can result in catastrophic consequences. With the proper guidance, these learners can create excellent robots that perform above the norm, such as the fastest line tracing robot or the strongest heavy-duty sumobots, among other accomplishments.

The Competitive

The Competitive - these learners are interested in keeping track of their progress and are aware of what is going on in their environment. Relentless and dauntless, they do not give up easily until they have reached the goals they set for themselves. They are frequently attracted to robotics because they are confident in their ability to cope with the technicalities of the subject and overcome the obstacles they may encounter.

Strengths: Determination, Will Power, Mindfulness of the surroundings Weaknesses: Aggressiveness, indifferene Recommendation: Allow these kids to assess the work of others and ask them to choose and discuss the most noteworthy aspect or element from each of the projects they have seen. They will be able to acknowledge that different individuals are best in their own ways and appreciate the importance of losing graciously as a result of these experiences.

If the possibility presents itself, assign these pupils the responsibility of coaching groups of students in order to develop effective leadership skills. It is beneficial to involve them in Robotics Innovation projects in order to broaden their horizons and channel their energy in the proper direction.

The Diligent

The Diligent — these learners participate in robotics for reasons that are not necessarily of their choosing.

Often, these participants are obliged to learn robotics as a part of a prerequisite or as a necessary step in order to advance their technical abilities. Their habits as a conscientious participant make them a great member of the team since they are capable of being both hardworking and persistent in their efforts. They perform well when they can share ideas that are more practical in nature, which is typically the case when their interest and motivation are in domains other than robotics and automation.

Strengths: Hardwork, Persistence, Practicality Weaknesses: Easily distracted, lacks interest Recommendation To nourish and sustain their interest in robotics, provide these participants more practical examples and applications of robotics in real life. They perform better when they are involved in hardware assembly, robot environment construction and other tasks that produce concrete, tangible, and visually quantifiable outputs.

The Geeks

The Geeks - these are the participants who are passionate about robots. They do their homework ahead of time and frequently arrive in class with a lot of questions.

They often monopolize the attention of the instructors due to their intense interest in robotics. They participate in class discussions with their questions, comments, and recommendations, but they must be careful not to alienate other students.

Strengths: Passion, Analytical, Precision Weaknesses: Overly focused on the topic and propensity to be inflexible Recommendation: I recommend to provide these participants additional challenges so that they may channel their mental abilities and study more areas of application in greater depth. Their programming and strategic talents serve them well in robot games that are similar to Mission Challenge, in which they must employ their programming and strategic abilities within a restricted period of time. Provide chances for these students to participate in group projects in order for them to build collaboration skills and a positive attitude about working in a group.
