In the market The ByWard Market remains a great place to shop, dine and entertain a hot date

The ByWard Market is back. The area suffered an exodus in the 1990s as the working population migrated to the suburbs. Stores closed and ill-managed development meant that once-historic areas of adjacent Lower Town became crowded with well-intentioned homeless shelters and addiction clinics. The result was a sad, defeated neighbourhood.

But things are looking up for the historic area of the capital region. A few longstanding problems aside — the hulking mass of the brutalist American embassy or the still unresolved problem of homelessness and drug abuse on Rideau and Cumberland streets — the Market is cool again. From the heritage buildings-turned-dive bars, like the Laff — stuck in the first floor of the Hotel Lafayette — to the slew of avant-garde art galleries that dot Murray Street, it’s worth checking out the Market again.

EQ3 60 GEORGE ST This three-floor complex mixes rustic and kitsch pop futurism so well, it looks like the lovechild of John Waters and Davy Crockett.

Everything either looks pulled out of the wreckage of a cabin — like worn wooden stairs that take you from the kitchenware on the first floor to the living-room apparel on the second and the bedroom sets on the third — or ripped from a 1970s bowling alley, like the slim, Pablo Lim LED table lamp ($300).

Chez Lucien 137 MURRAY ST This cozy bar is usually the place that people are referring to when they say, “I know this little place in the Market.” It’s got one main floor, a mezzanine, a half basement and a pretty great selection of beer. Most of the tables in the place are for two, enshrining its reputation as a solid date bar, but be warned: Ottawa is so small that you will, invariably, run into someone you know there. If you decide to head over alone, some bored public servant at the bar will chat you up before long.

Wolf & Zed 519 SUSSEX DR With just about the sexiest shoes and boots that you’ll find anywhere in Ottawa, this big open store invites you to fit as many sample sizes as you can into a bag and make a break for the door, hoping that the staff’s high heels prevent them from catching you. If you have a moral objection to stealing and are on a tight budget, the sale rack is a godsend — $99 for a pair of high-top Blackstone sneakers.

M0531 531 SUSSEX DR Montreal has been exporting a lot of amazing things to Ottawa lately, including this leather maker. Conceived in Montreal a quarter century ago, the company is expanding its high-quality bags, jackets and wallets to Asia, Europe and, finally, Ottawa. The company has just moved into the two-floor Sussex Drive shop, and it’s not hard to imagine yourself in Montreal’s Mile End. There is one $625 travel bag that I have my eye on.

House of Barons 481 SUSSEX DR Hipster haircuts have finally come to Ottawa. Thus far, this barber shop is probably more famous for its clever signage: a poster reading “We Accept Walkens,” featuring a picture of Christopher Walken. But as news spreads of its assortment of oldtimey services, including hot shaves and boot waxes, that could change.

Murray Street 110 MURRAY ST Aside from Ottawa’s bathhouses, this is probably the best place to get head. Okay, so it’s a whole, smoked pig’s head, but this buzz-earning restaurant’s signature dish is also a messy affair involving eight to 10 people. If you don’t feel like giving the 48 hours’ notice required for the daunting main dish, you can also try the amazing selection of charcuterie or some PEI smoked mussels — dubbed #thegunshow. The Always Fashionable Old Fashioned cocktail is also worth trying.

Modern Shop 541 SUSSEX DR It’s not entirely clear what everything in the Modern Shop is for, but it looks cool. Not the kind of home décor shop you want to wander into if you have a set idea what you’re looking for, the tiny little space is crammed full of eccentricities, including my personal favourite: leather-daddy stainless-steel salt-and-pepper shakers for $40.

Mellos 290 DALHOUSIE ST Sitting at the 75-year-old diner around the lunchtime rush hour — when the narrow room is full of office workers and students — it’s hard to imagine Mellos as anything but the sort of place where the wisecracking, apronwearing waitress is pouring you a cup of coffee and sliding down a plate of greasy home fries. But at night, while you’re sipping on a whiskey sour and eating a Korean fried-chicken sandwich, it’s hard to imagine its mid-day incarnation. If you live nearby, you’ll probably be there the next morning for hangover breakfast and complete the cycle.

Hidden gems of Hintonburg Neighbourhood offers quirky mix of old and new Story and photos

Winter in Ottawa is nothing to write home about. Cold, drab and usually snowy or rainy, it’s a time to retreat inside and hunker down for the long season.

But Hintonburg, one of Ottawa’s oldest neighbourhoods, offers an intriguing mix of history and present-day trendiness, and even once things have moved indoors there’s still plenty to do and see. Bordered by the O-Train line in the east and Somerset Heights to the west, it comprises the area from Transitway to Queensway, with Wellington Street West as its main artery and the site of many of its most eclectic businesses.

The neighbourhood got its start as a small farming community that was part of Nepean Township. By the late 1800s it had grown enough to become an incorporated village. It was named for Joseph Hinton, an influential shopkeeper in the area in the mid-1800s. The Village of Hintonburg became part of the City of Ottawa in 1907. Presiding over it all is the impressive Église SaintFrançois-d’Assise cathedral, its twin bell towers reaching to the sky, tolling at noon and six as a daily reminder that the past is still very much alive and present in this little neighbourhood along Wellington West.

Raspberry Béret Pop Up Shop 1004 WELLINGTON ST W What, you ask, is a pop-up shop? It’s what happens when Stephanie Vezina, an artist, electronic musician, collector of pretty things, and all-around rolling stone, has an idea, spots a location and sets up shop. Vezina opened her doors in August and has been going strong ever since, thanks largely to the warm reception she’s had from Hintonburg. “It’s a wonderful neighbourhood. People are really into supporting the local scene and businesses. It’s kind of my studio space and a store,” she says of her cozy little shop, crammed full of cushy furniture, bright paintings and sparkly things. She also has her music-editing equipment in the space and uses the profits from the vintage shop to fund her creative habits. Every Thursday night Vezina has an esthetician friend offer $10 manicures in the store, and she also hopes to open it up to small events like book readings and poetry.

Nestled at the corner of Wellington and Pinhey streets, Wabi-Sabi is the go-to spot for anyone interested in knitting, felting or fibre art.

Started five years ago by owner Carol Secord, the studio offers both classes and supplies. The shop also runs camps, birthday parties, baby showers and team-building events and hosts a free knit-night on Thursdays that is open to anyone who wants to bring in a project and get some help from a staff member.

“We have both men and women and all ages that come,” Secord says. The store’s name comes from a Japanese term meaning “imperfection in beauty.” “Wabi sabi is good when learning how to knit because there’s lots of mistakes,” Secord says. “It’s still beautiful because it’s about the process.”

Business partners Laura Twiss and Tonia Weber first came together as crafting partners before opening their storefront boutique. “We started doing craft shows together, we knit, and then we felted together,” Twiss explains. They carry a selection of locally made clothing, jewellery and accessories, some of which they make themselves and some of which they source from other designers. Originally located close to the Parkdale Market, their Wellington West storefront opened on Sept 3, making it possibly the newest addition to the block. “We are really happy with the neighbourhood . . . a lot of people come to this area as a destination because there are so many neat shops,” Twiss says.

World of Maps 1235 WELLINGTON ST W It’s a fair bet that you have never been in a store like World of Maps.

Don’t let the name fool you — if you’re picturing a creaky old shop full of cobwebs and dusty, crumbling maps that haven’t been accurate since the Soviet Union dissolved, you couldn’t be more wrong. Owned by shopkeeper Brad Green and his wife, this bright, airy store is bustling with activity and packed to the gills with not just maps, but travel books, compasses, globes, telescopes and binoculars, games and more. They also print custom maps and have a framing workshop in the basement. “The name of the store doesn’t encompass all of the things that we do,” Green says. “Our clientele is not usually tourists coming to Ottawa; they are people from Ottawa going anywhere.” On the day I visit, Green introduces me to a customer, Deanna Maillard, who has just ordered a custom map of the canal route from Ottawa to Kingston to commemorate a canoe trip she took with her husband.

The map is designed so that she can add notes and photos from the trip. “Then when somebody else wants to do it, you have it all right there to share with them and it’s tangible,” she says.

Cube Gallery 1285 WELLINGTON ST W Nestled somewhat inauspiciously between a condo tower and a bike shop, Cube is a contemporary gallery curated by Ottawa artist Don Monet. Now in its ninth year of operations, the gallery hosts a new group show each month, as well as booking evening events. It represents many Canadian artists, including Order of Canada honoured sculptor Joe Fafard.

“Don selects all the work that comes through here, so when artists do submissions via online or in person he chooses it to his taste,” says gallery assistant Chelsea Dozois. The space manages to be both open and cozy at the same time. It hosts monthly shows in the lower room, while an ongoing roster of both established and emerging artists adorn the walls of its main space. A yearly highlight for the gallery is the Nocturne Festival in July, with art, lectures and workshops celebrating the night sky. Cube also runs an annual Christmas show featuring 12-by-12-inch works by 40 to 60 artists, perfect for gift giving.

Allegro Retro 1243 WELLINGTON ST W Another little gem adding its presence to the Hintonburg streetscape is Allegro Retro.

Owner Calère Boudreau prides herself on offering something for everyone. “I’ll sometimes have a customer come in and I’ll sell something to a 75-yearold lady, and half an hour later a 16-year-old boy will come in and buy something. I’m really proud of that, that we can offer that sort of variety.” The store carries footwear, bags and accessories, and even toys and board games. “Basically, we have vintage from 1940 to circa January 2013,” Boudreau says.

SuzyQ 991 WELLINGTON ST W If you have spent any time in Ottawa in the last two years, you’ve no doubt heard the siren call of the maple-bacon doughnut. This unlikely confection is SuzyQ’s claim to fame, filling the air with an unmistakable sweet-porky aroma that draws in customers like nothing else. Inside a tiny little shack in the parking lot behind the TacoLot, the SuzyQ bakers are like elves in Santa’s workshop, creating artisanal treats in flavours like rosewater, raspberry cassis and London Fog. The doughnut roster is changed up seasonally, depending on what ingredients are available, and the baking is done in small batches to ensure that every single one is fresh. “There’s definitely a huge effort to use local ingredients,” says barista Matt. “The bacon for the maple-bacon comes from a local farm, and we get giant slabs of it.” Best of all, for $20 with no tax, a dozen SuzyQs can be yours.

4Cats Art Studio 1107 WELLINGTON ST W First opened in Victoria, BC, by founder and CEO Joey Simon, 4Cats Art Studio now has locations throughout Canada, the US, Mexico and Australia. Offering art classes, workshops, camps and birthday parties for both children and adults, the studio has been keeping the creative juices flowing in Hintonburg for three years now. Workshops range from drawing and painting to polymer clay and felt, and often they are structured around the style of a particular artist. “A lot of times we’ll do a workshop if it’s an artist’s birthday. We’ll do a workshop inspired by that artist,” says 4Cats curator Brittany Cutler. Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh and Andy Warhol have all been given the 4Cats treatment, as have many others.

Emulsify 1283-B WELLINGTON ST W A few doors down from Cube is Emulsify, offering fresh artisan olive oils and balsamic vinegars. Emulsify opened its doors less than a year ago.

“This neighbourhood by far is, I think, immeasurable to our success,” says shopkeeper Lacy Bourguignon. “There’s just so many foodie-related things going on around here.” Walking into the store is a little bit like walking into a vat of olive oil, with the rich green-gold walls and low lighting contributing to the effect. Bright metal vats of oil and vinegar line the walls, and small cups are available for sampling. Olive oils range from pure-andunadulterated to flavoured. I try an oil that tastes sharply of cut grass and a balsamic richly flavoured with chocolate. Most bottles are in the $15 range, making them an inexpensive gift that is a nice change from the standard bottle of wine. An eight-pack sample box of oils and vinegars is available for $35. Emulsify also offers various tasting nights and a chef series.

Ian Carter specializes in HIV-nondisclosure cases Lawyer Ian Carter began his career as a television reporter.

Focused primarily on covering the courts, he decided he could make a greater difference working within the system. He graduated from Queen’s University law school and now works for the criminal law firm Bayne Sellar Boxall. Carter has dealt with all manner of cases, but he’s developed a specialty working on HIV nondisclosure. His practice has encompassed a number of files, including the high-profile prosecution of Steven Boone.

Having worked on the other side, Carter understands exactly how the press functions. He takes any steps possible to protect his clients from media attention but admits it’s sometimes impossible to avoid.

As a relatively new field, HIV law is both fuzzy and everevolving. Court rulings that have been handed down can leave much for future judges to interpret, meaning things are often decided on a case-by-case basis. Frustrated by this, Carter also works closely with a number of HIV organizations on legal reform. There is one thing he makes clear: anyone arrested or even contacted by police should contact him immediately. He provides initial consultations at no charge.
