Museum of Vancouver In addition to its permanent exhibits, the Museum of Vancouver, tucked away near Kits beach, hosts From Rationing to Ravishing to alleviate your winter blahs. Running until March 8, this exhibition explores the transformation of women’s fashions through the 1940s and ’50s. The pragmatic demands of the Second World War dictated straight-edged, manly styles for women. The curvaceous silhouette returned with a vengeance after the war ended.

Even if their collection of quality hip hop hadn’t instantly charmed me, I would have been sold by the artisan coffee and ever-evolving, delightful cuisine. Espresso is the signature drink, and their brunch menu is simple but elegant. I had the French toast. Trust me: it’s like your first time, all over again.

Everything is made fresh in-house by a hot and talented team, including a French pastry chef who’s responsible for all the desserts. Best of all, you can come back for the licensed evening service and do it all over again.

After almost three years in the East Village, the Red Wagon has established itself as beyond trendy and has cultivated a loyal and plentiful following. The fare is deliciously lacking in pretension. And the same can be said for the service — no grating “My name is Whimsy and I’ll be your server today” banalities. Check them out midweek, as that loyal and plentiful following makes for understandable lineups on the weekends.

There are four locations to choose from: Denman Street, Davie Street, 4th Avenue or Main Street. And I’d wager a plate of corned beef hash that these are the only places in Vancouver where you can get a basic eggs benny (two eggs served with pan-fries) for less than $10!

My personal favourite is the Davie Street location. With a 7am opening and being just an elevator ride down from Xtra’s office, it’s the perfect spot for over-caffeinated deadline cramming!

In fact, they may have invented it. The owners of the infamous Elbow Room have been serving their no-nonsense breakfast with a side of cheeky insolence for 30 years. They’ve been featured in every local paper, are listed with the Japanese Tourist Board and have cult status in Hollywood. “Whether you’re famous or not,” Savoie says, “we will treat you with abuse!” And while it might be this very cockiness that brings people in the door, it’s the consistently awesome food that keeps them coming back. That and the quiet community-building commitment that has seen patrons and owners together donate more than $78,800 to A Loving Spoonful since 1993.

Straightening with style Orthodontist Sam Daher is an expert in invisible braces

Once it was rare to see an adult with braces. Now, says Dr Sam Daher, an orthodontist with offices downtown, in West Vancouver and Calgary, about 75 percent of his patients are adults.

Many adults would not put up with two years of nickel-titanium or stainless-steel braces. But the invention of nearly invisible plastic braces was a turning point.

Daher came to Vancouver from Montreal in 2006 — “I like the West Coast lifestyle and just got tired of shovelling snow,” he says — and two years later got a call from the company that pioneered the Invisalign clear plastic braces.

“Congratulations,” Daher recalls being told, “you’ve done more Invisalign cases per year than anyone else on the planet.”

The company asked him to give feedback on improving the product, then asked him to share his experience with other orthodontists. So far this year alone, he has logged 180,000 miles flying between lectures.

“Orthodontics has always been about health first,” he says. “The health of the oral cavity and the health of the bite and the teeth.”

With the success of clear plastic braces, Daher has built a busy practice founded on a concept he developed called Orthostyle.

“When you drain the lymphatic system, everything tightens up because everything begins to move better,” Dueck says. “On the face, for example, the collagen gets some elasticity back as it lifts and tightens the skin.”

Integrative is also on the cutting edge with its stem-cell treatment PRP (platelet-rich plasma injection therapy), which uses a patient’s own platelets for both medical and cosmetic applications.

“In our skin centre we use PRP instead of collagen and inject your own stem cells into the areas where you want a little more plumpness,” Dueck explains.

Treatments aside, Dueck says that it really is the caring nature of everyone who works at Integrative that has kept many patients coming back since it opened 30 years ago.

“It really is like a family. Heart first, everything else second.”

Tips from the Vancouver Coastal Health Travel Clinic Planning a trip somewhere sunny and off the beaten track?

The Vancouver Coastal Health Travel Clinic reminds travellers to get proper vaccinations and prescriptions before they take off.

“You may need to get certain vaccines depending on where you are travelling to and how long you will be staying,” says Dr Suni Boraston, the clinic’s medical director. “The best way to prepare for travel abroad, where you can get exposed to bugs and viruses your body may never have seen, is to visit a travel clinic at least four to six weeks before you leave.”

Depending on your destination, some vaccinations are commonly advised, such as Dukoral for traveller’s diarrhea, tetanus and hepatitis A. The hep A vaccine protects travellers against a virus that can be contracted by drinking untreated water; eating contaminated uncooked foods, such as shellfish; or eating foods prepared in unsanitary conditions. It is one of the most common vaccine-preventable illnesses in travellers.

Tetanus is a serious bacterial disease that can be deadly. It can be contracted through a cut, a burn or an animal bite. Travellers are generally advised to get a booster every 10 years following their initial tetanus vaccine.
