Page 1

July 2018 Dear Pinkerton Families, Class of 2022, welcome to Pinkerton Academy! This year marks an exciting new chapter in the story of your life as you start your high school career. As we embark on this journey together, there are many new and exciting opportunities for you. You will have the opportunity to keep old friends while making many new friends. New experiences, classes, clubs, activities, sports, and lessons await you during the next four years. I urge you to take advantage of all the many different opportunities that will be available to you during your time at Pinkerton Academy. Each day, week, month, and year presents different opportunities for each of us to learn and grow as an individual. In a few short weeks you will enter Pinkerton Academy as strangers, uncertain of what lies ahead of you, and in four years you will graduate as friends, ready for the next chapter of your life. This summer, the campus has hit the refresh button to get ready for the start of the 2018-19 school year. Members of the Building & Grounds and IT have been working on getting classrooms ready for your teachers when they return. Upgrades to different parts of campus continue to be worked on as we gear up for the first day of school. Please take the time to read all the linked/attached documents to be best prepared for our new year together. On behalf of our entire community, I look forward to welcoming you all in a few weeks to Pinkerton Academy. What will the story of the Class of 2022 hold? Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Timothy J. Powers Interim Headmaster

July 2018 Dear Students, As the summer heat settles in, it sure is hard to believe it is that time of year again when we start thinking about the start of school in the fall. As I think about the 2018-19 school year, I look forward to meeting the incoming freshman class as you enter our campus for the first time as Pinkerton students. I want to encourage all freshmen to attend the annual Freshman Field Day on August 7. This is a fresh start for all and a chance to make new impressions for yourself and others. Do your best to make the most of these four short years by making good decisions, setting realistic goals, and working hard to achieve them. Get involved in clubs, athletics, theatre or any of the more than 60 clubs and organizations that are available to you over the next four years. All students should pay close attention to all school policies. It is important for students and parents to carefully read the PA 2018-2019 Student Planner, which will be issued on the first day of school. Also, please pay close attention to school counseling and administrative personnel listings. Please note that updated lists of administrative and school counseling personnel, office locations, and telephone extensions will be sent to all parents and students electronically before the start of school, and also posted on our website, www.pinkertonacademy.org. You and your parents will receive an email which contains a link to the “2018-19 Student Planner Acknowledgement” form, confirming your receipt and review of this resource. New! This form will need to be submitted electronically before you can receive your schedule. A printed version will also be made available to those who do not have email. Please be sure to complete and mail to the Health Office the “Health Information and OTC Medication Permission Form”. Your permission is required each year as it gives written authorization for a nurse to provide acetaminophen or ibuprofen to your child. No medications can be provided without written permission. (Form is available on website.) Please contact Student Information Services at sis@pinkertonacademy.org or ext. 1191 if you have moved or changed telephone numbers so that we will have the most up-to-date contact information in case of an emergency. With the start of the new school year, we all have the chance to continue to make impressions on those around us, to learn from others, and gain valuable experiences. Remember that we are a community of individuals with many different backgrounds and experiences, and we should always treat each other with courtesy and respect, and be personally responsible for our actions.

I hope you are finding time to have a fun and relaxing summer. See you soon,

Susanne Tartarilla Interim Dean of Students and Support Services

Class dues are payments to the class that each student at Pinkerton Academy is required to pay. This money goes towards funding class events and eventually pays for things such as graduation and reunions. Dues also help the class perform community service and host initiatives throughout the years. Class dues for Freshman during the 2018-2019 school year are: $64.00 This fee includes your yearbook for this school year. Yearbooks are not sold during the school year, but are bought through paying your class dues. The only way to get your yearbook is to pay your class dues IN FULL by the anticipated due date (more information to follow). In order to attend class events later on, such as sophomore semi-formal, junior prom, senior banquet, and graduation, ALL dues must be paid. More information on how to pay your class dues will be sent home during Quarter 1.

If you are concerned about dues payment, but still want your student to meet financial obligations to the class, please contact an advisor to discuss payment options. Our goal is to help our students have a wonderful time at Pinkerton! Please do not hesitate to reach out to us! As you get ready to start the next part of your journey in high school, be sure to get involved and stay active in your school community! Whether in the classroom, on the field, on the stage, or just around campus at events, be there, be present, and bring your best self! You never know what could happen! We are excited to meet you in August and can’t wait for you to experience all the pride, tradition, and experience Pinkerton Academy has to offer! Enjoy your last few weeks of summer and get ready for a fantastic four years! Sincerely,

Vanessa Barros and Grace Flint

Attendance Policy ~ Pinkerton Academy believes that optimum educational benefits are tied to optimum attendance. Educational programs are designed for, and scholastic requirements are based on, student in-school participation. The entire policy will be available on our website and also found in the Student Planner. Dress Code ~ Please read the ENTIRE policy in the Student Planner. A important letter reviewing dress code policies will be emailed to students and parents in mid-July. Lockers ∼ Students are strongly encouraged to make use of school-issued locks and lockers to secure their valuables. Pinkerton Academy is not responsible for any articles that are lost or stolen at school. Lockers will not be issued to students. Students wanting to use a locker may select a locker in any building to use for their belongings. Students should obtain a lock from their Administrative Offices, free of charge. Only school-issued locks are allowed, and Pinkerton Academy reserves the right to cut or remove any lock and to inspect the contents of any locker. School-issued locks need to be returned before the end of the year. Acceptable Use Policy for Digital & Electronic Media Communication for Students ∼ The importance of teachers, students, and parents engaging, collaborating, learning, and sharing with various digital communication tools is part of the 21st century learning environment. It is important for Pinkerton parents and students to read the ENTIRE policy in the Student Planner. SAT/PSAT ∼ The SATs will be offered at Pinkerton Academy on November 3, 2018, and June 1, 2019. The PSATs will be offered at Pinkerton on October 13, 2018. There are certain rules and regulations that must be followed. Failure to follow these regulations will result in the student not being admitted to the test center on the day of the test. Please visit the Pinkerton Academy website and www.collegeboard.org to view these requirements. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Tammy Craft at 437-5200, ext. 1189, or tcraft@pinkertonacademy.org. Electronic Delivery Devices ~ The Administration is very concerned about the increased availability of devices often known as electronic delivery (“vaping”) devices to our students. These include but are not limited to e-cigarettes, electronic vaporizers, and so-called hookah pens. Not only are there concerns about the inhalation hazards of these devices, but there is also a great concern about their associated use with synthetic marijuana and THC oils. For these and a host of other reasons, the use or possession of any type of electronic vaporizer/delivery device will be considered a violation of our drug policy resulting in a 10-day suspension. This applies to all students while on campus or at any school activity. We urge parents to have a discussion with their children about the dangers of these substances and devices. Class Rings ~ There will be an assembly for all students on the first day of school. Class ring information will be distributed to Sophomores during that time. Students may order their class rings on August 31 & September 7 in the Shepard Café during lunch periods. Students who need repairs or resizing to their class rings may also see the ring representative on these days. Pinkerton Communications ~ The expectation is that all students will use their Pinkerton Google email for all school-related communications. (continued)

Summative Assessments* ~ It is the expectation that assessments be submitted by their due dates. Seven (7) points (based on a 100-point scale) will be deducted from the earned grade for each day that a summative assessment is handed in late. * An assessment that usually occurs towards the end of a unit, semester, course, etc. Other Updates Recommended for your review in the 2018-19 PA Student Planner ~ ✰ Administrative and School Counseling Assignments ✰ Checking into School - Library Services - Food Services ✰ Athletic Policies ✰ Academic Honesty and Integrity ✰ Distribution of Unofficial Materials on School Property ✰ Dangerous Articles or Objects - Weapons on Academy Property ✰ Alcohol, Drug, & Tobacco Policies ✰ Video & Audio Recordings for Instructional Purposes

Dear Parents/Guardians & Students, I hope this email finds you enjoying your summer. In just a few weeks we will be back to school and the busyness of fall will be upon us. On behalf of the Health Office, I would like to reiterate school policy on medication dispensing at school. First and foremost, with the exception of cough drops, an inhaler and/or an epi-pen, students ARE NOT allowed to carry any form of medication, prescribed or otherwise, this includes vitamin supplements. Please go to the Pinkerton website (www.pinkertonacademy.org) and read the full policy and the procedure for students to have permission to take medication at school. You'll find it under Campus Offices>Health Services>Health Services Home. Each school year, the state requires the Health Office to have parental permission to administer Ibuprofen (Advil) or Acetominaphin (Tylenol). The OTC permission form can be found within this emailing or on the Pinkerton website under Campus Offices>Health Services>Health Services Home. Click on the link titled Health Information and Over the Counter Medication Permission Form. Please print, fill it out and sign it. You may mail it back to us or have your son/daughter drop it off to the Health Office on the first day of school, August 28th. If we do not have an OTC form on file, our nurses are allowed to make a one time phone call for permission, so please return the completed form to us as soon as possible. We would hate to have to deny anyone medicine simply because we do not have proper permission to administer said medicine. If you should have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call the Health Office at 437-5218. Enjoy these waning days of summer, Deb Verrier Admin. Only 1 “combo” meal can be purchased each day, other items will be charged at a la carte pricing. The student must take the entrée and at least one vegetable, fruit or juice for it to be considered a “combo” meal (milk and dessert does not count toward the new meal regulation). Students use their I.D. card and number to access their food account, this is a declining debit card system. Prepayments/deposits can be made using cash or checks in the special envelopes available outside the office door. Freshmen who were enrolled in Pinkerton’s sending towns school system will have their eligibility continued also until this date. Students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch must use their I.D. card at the register and purchase a complete/combo meal. (see above). Applications can be turned into the Main Office, directly to the Food Service Office, or mailed. Parents are notified via mail of the decision as soon as possible. Pinkerton Academy Food Service is not part of the sending towns or Derry elementary schools, for faster processing a separate application is needed for Pinkerton Academy students only. 6. MY CHILD’S APPLICATION WAS APPROVED LAST YEAR. DO I NEED TO FILL OUT A NEW ONE? Yes. Your child’s application is only good for that school year and for the first few days of this school year, through [date]. You must send in a new application unless the school told you that your child is eligible for the new school year. If you do not send in a new application that is approved by the school or you have not been notified that your child is eligible for free meals , your child will be charged the full price for meals. 7.

I GET WIC. CAN MY CHILDREN GET FREE MEALS? Children in households participating in WIC may be eligible for free or reduced price meals. Please send in an application.

8. WILL THE INFORMATION I GIVE BE CHECKED? Yes. We may also ask you to send written proof of the household income you report. 9.

For example, if you normally make $1000 each month, but you missed some work last month and only made $900, put down that you made $1000 per month. If you normally get overtime, include it, but do not include it if you only work overtime sometimes. If you have lost a job or had your hours or wages reduced, use your current income. 13. Whenever this happens, please write a 0 in the field. However, if any income fields are left empty or blank, those will also be counted as zeroes. Please be careful when leaving income fields blank, as we will assume you meant to do so. 14. WE ARE IN THE MILITARY. DO WE REPORT OUR INCOME DIFFERENTLY? Your basic pay and cash bonuses must be reported as income. If you get any cash value allowances for off-base housing, food, or clothing, it must also be included as income. INSTRUCTIONS

OPEN HOUSE Thursday, September 27, 2018 - 1:00-3:00 p.m. and 5:00-7:00 p.m. Pinkerton Academy will host Open House on Thursday, September 27, 2018. The purpose of this afternoon/evening is to give families the opportunity to meet briefly with their children's teachers to discuss expectations for the upcoming semester/year along with discussions of student adjustment. Due to the large number of parents who visit the Academy during Open House, please do not expect to have lengthy teacher conferences. If you wish to speak with a teacher at length, please arrange for a follow-up conference. If someone is meeting with the teacher when you arrive, it would be appreciated if you would wait outside the classroom until the existing meeting has concluded. Interim Headmaster Powers will be available for an informal and optional “meet and greet” in the Manning Lecture Hall, located in the Ek Science Building, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. and 5:00-6:00 p.m. to discuss this year’s topics and new initiatives. Mr. Lee, Dean of Studies and Instruction, will also be available for an informal and optional “meet and greet” to discuss course offerings and/or any other items involving the school’s academic program. This will also take place in the Manning Lecture Hall from 1:00-2:00 p.m. and 5:00-6:00 p.m. The School Counselors welcome you to stop in during the Open House to meet your student’s counselor and get information about services they can provide you and your student throughout the year. The freshman counseling office is located on the first floor of the Academy Building. The counseling office for sophomores, juniors and seniors is located on the 3rd floor of the Low Building. ASPEN ACCOUNTS – For parents who have questions regarding an ASPEN account, Mr. P. O’Reilly will be available to assist you in the Media Center (6108) in the Academy Building during both sessions. Students will be released at 12:30 p.m. on September 27. There will be two visitation sessions: 1:00-3:00 p.m. and 5:00-7:00 p.m. In an attempt to prevent long lines, we ask parents of freshmen whose last names begin with A–J to visit English teachers between 1:00 & 2:00 or 5:00 & 6:00 p.m. and then move to other subjects. Parents of freshmen whose last names begin with K–Z should visit Math/Algebra teachers between 1:00 & 2:00 or 5:00 & 6:00 p.m. before moving on to other subjects. You will find it helpful to sit down with your child and map out a visitation route that will help keep you from having to travel back and forth across the campus. Thank you for your cooperation and we look forward to seeing you at Open House!

Pinkerton Academy CTE Summer 2018

Welcome class of 2022! Welcome to the Class of 2022 from the Center for Career & Technical Education (CTE). To learn more about yourself, your options, and CTE, we invite you and your parents to attend our Career Awareness Night on Wednesday, November 28, in the Stockbridge Theatre. Though you may have attended a similar program in November 2017, it is worth attending again as you continue to explore your options.

Why Choose CTE? Pinkerton CTE has more dual and concurrent course offerings than any other institution in N.H. and one of the largest selections of alternative Technology and Math-focused courses.

81% of our 2016 Pinkerton CTE graduate survey respondents felt their CTE experience prepared them to succeed in their current educational studies.

About half of all CTE learners are enrolled in programs in leading fields such as Healthcare, STEM, and Information Technology.

89% of parents think students should receive more education about career choices while in high school.

91% of 2017 CTE graduate survey respondents said they planned to pursue college related to their CTE courses of study.

When can I register for CTE Programs? Your opportunity to register for CTE programs will be in December 2018. Since enrollment is very limited, students need to request courses through Aspen as well as the CTE registration form that will be distributed during Period A. For more information students are encouraged to stop by the CTE office in the Low building or visit our website today! (www.pinkertonacademy.org/cte)

Upcoming CTE Events:

Think Non-Traditional! A non-traditional occupation is an occupation in which 75% or more of the persons in that field are of the same gender. The best reasons for considering non-traditional career choices are simple and direct: • Increased pay and wider choice of career options • Nontraditional occupations for women will earn 150% more over a lifetime of work than a traditional occupation for women • Students are encouraged regardless of gender to follow their dreams and utilize their interests and skills

September: • •

November: • • •

That same evening will be our Career Awareness Night for parents and students in the Stockbridge Theatre. Staff will describe in detail about career planning resources. Students can engage in activities during the CTE program fair portion of the evening.

Be sure to like and follow us on these accounts to stay up-to-date with upcoming events throughout the year!! @PinkertonCTE

Career Cluster System The Center for Career & Technical Education has adopted the Career Clusters model developed through the National Career Clusters initiative. This chart depicts the Career Focused programs Pinkerton CTE offers. Besides the Career Focused offerings, CTE has a large selection of Discovery Electives from which to choose. Career clusters identify pathways from secondary school to two and four year colleges, graduate school and the workplace, so students can learn in school what they can do in the future.
