As we reflect on the 2023-24 school year, it is with immense pride and heartfelt admiration that I address the graduating class of 2024. This class has shown extraordinary resilience, strength, and adaptability in the face of unprecedented challenges Having navigated their high school years during the COVID-19 pandemic, they not only overcame the obstacles but also thrived, embodying the very essence of what it means to be a Pinewood Panther. Their journey is a testament to their strong spirit and the unwavering support of their families, teachers, and peers.
This year, we also pause to remember Jonathan, a beloved member of our Pinewood family Jonathan's passing on March 31, 2023, deeply affected us all, and his memory continues to inspire us. Jonathan was a dedicated student, a passionate athlete, and a cherished friend. His courage and determination, even in the face of immense adversity, left an enduring mark on our community As we celebrate the achievements of the class of 2024, we honor Jonathan’s legacy and the light he brought into our lives
Among this remarkable class, four students have been with us since kindergarten: Makena, Alexander, Caden, and Bridget. Watching them grow and evolve over the years has been a privilege. Their journey, from the early days of exploration and discovery to the confident, capable individuals they are today, fills us with pride We extend our deepest gratitude to their families for their unwavering support and commitment to Pinewood.
As the class of 2024 steps into the future, we are filled with excitement and anticipation for the contributions they will make to the world Their experiences at Pinewood have prepared them to embrace opportunities and face challenges with confidence and integrity. Our mission at Pinewood has always been to empower students to become individuals of character who uplift their communities. The class of 2024 exemplifies this mission, and we are confident they will continue to make positive contributions wherever they go
Congratulations, Class of 2024 Your journey has only just begun, and we cannot wait to see the impact you will make in our world.

Pinewood’s College Counseling Program takes a student-centered approach in search of the best college fit, equipping students with the self-awareness and confidence to take charge of their own discernment process.
Students receive individualized support throughout their college search. They are empowered to reflect on their talents, interests, goals, values, and aspirations, using that self-understanding to identify the communities where they could see themselves flourishing, both academically and socially. Pinewood students often end up seeking college environments that mirror what they value most here –accessible faculty, challenging academics, and welcoming communities.
The College Counseling Program’s goal is to partner with students and their families to find the right match. While we’re immensely proud to report that 100% of Pinewood graduates are accepted to and matriculate at a college or university, the true marker of success is the joy and fulfillment we see in our alums’ journeys.
Sophia had a broad list of schools, mostly in New England, from the start of the process. As someone who grew up ice-skating, cold weather was not a deterrent. As November neared, she focused in on Dartmouth and was incredibly thoughtful about her personal essay and supplements, making sure to put her best foot forward.
"My experience with Pinewood College Counseling could be best described as straightforward and efficient. Ms. Siegel was extremely helpful in creating realistic goals and expectations with me, which broke the process down into smaller, more manageable goals; this helped me feel much less overwhelmed with the intense workload. I also really appreciated how both counselors encouraged my involvement in community extracurriculars rather than outside activities, and helped me build my statements and essays around my unique identity as a Pinewood student. This process helped me connect with universities that are also community-focused, which was one of my top criteria in the college search."
– Sophia
Rohan was incredibly detail-oriented throughout his process. He would come to each meeting having deeply considered what they discussed in the previous session. He was receptive to feedback and, when he was down to deciding between admissions offers from his top two schools, he used the “slow-thinking” process Pinewood college counseling developed, inspired by Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman, to weigh his decision.
"The Pinewood college counseling experience is a natural extension of the values that make Pinewood an ideal place to learn. Ms. Siegel felt like someone I could always approach with questions, and it felt as though she truly understood me as a person and a student. Pinewood college counseling ensured I put my best foot forward in my college applications.” – Rohan
Edward consulted with Mr. Coote and Ms. Siegel regularly. He was very reasonable in his decision-making and put conscientious effort into each application.
"The Pinewood college counseling office was straightforward and supportive through what would have otherwise been a confusing and stress-inducing process. Right off the bat, the counselors made it clear to me that they are dedicated to maximizing my potential and finding me a suitable college. Their approach to communicating with students also made it extremely easy to be honest, and they listened thoughtfully to my priorities when it came to defining where I want my path to lead."
– Edward
Cole was proactive in his approach and open-minded to suggestions from both counselors. He had a positive attitude when creating his college list, making sure each school was a good fit.
"The college process at Pinewood has been nothing but phenomenal for me. One of the things I love is how much care the administration takes in making sure that every student, including myself, is taking the best courses for them throughout each year of high school. I really noticed how great the college process was at Pinewood when I got to start working with Mr. Coote and Ms. Siegel. Both of them made a very clear effort to get to know me outside of who I am on my transcript. They are friendly faces in the halls who I genuinely enjoy talking to, which made the tough college process so much easier." – Cole
Jake worked very hard on his application to make sure that admissions offices saw him in the best possible light. He was passionate about his school of choice, and this enthusiasm resonated in the way he approached his application process.
"The uncertainty of the college process is daunting, especially since there is so much at stake. But, thanks to Mr. Coote’s and Ms. Siegel’s help and guidance, I felt comfortable and excited for my future! Now, I am headed to the school of my dreams." – Jake

Senior Starfish Awards
The Senior Starfish Awards are proudly presented to those teachers, faculty, and staff members whom our graduating seniors have identified as making a lasting difference in their lives.
The name of this award was inspired by the story of an old man who observed a boy walking along the shore throwing stranded starfish back into the sea. The man told the boy his efforts wouldn't make a difference, since he couldn't possibly save all of the starfish on the beach. The boy smiled, picked up another starfish, and replied, "I can make a difference for this one."

Tribute from Gabriel Lemmon Head of Upper Campus
In my 7th and final year at Pinewood, it is my distinct privilege to express the immense pride and admiration I have for this amazing group of young adults. Your journey through high school, beginning in the uncharted waters of remote learning and culminating in May of 2024, is a testament to resilience, flexibility, and an indomitable spirit of joy.
This assemblage of distinct personalities started their high school careers online during the pandemic, navigating the challenges of hybrid education. The traditional high school experiences were initially out of reach, which took a toll on you both individually and collectively.
However, you turned challenges into opportunities to forge your own paths, overcome adversity, and lead with joy. You redefined high school on your own terms. You made the most of your time at Pinewood, and I am confident that you will accomplish great things beyond our campus. Congratulations!
Sincerely, Mr.
Lemmon

As advisors to the remarkable Class of 2024, we have had the unique pleasure of guiding these students through an unprecedented chapter of their lives. Starting in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, their high school journey began not in hallways and classrooms but in the confines of Zoom screens. Over these four years, we have watched with pride as each student transformed challenges into opportunities, building academic skills and strong bonds of friendship and community. IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jonathan Zhao
August 24, 2006–March 31, 2023
At the commencement ceremony for the Class of 2024, Assistant Head of Upper Campus Haley Hemm presented a diploma in memoriam to the family of Jonathan Z., a beloved classmate who passed away following complications from a rare auto-immune disease in 2023.
From the first moment I interacted with Jonathan, I could tell he was a gentle soul. He was capable of immense kindness. He exuded peace. When I think about the energy needed to make this world a more harmonious place, I think about Jonathan.
As I was struggling to find the right words for this dedication, I took a trip to Jonathan’s wind chime memorial, noticing the redwood tree on which it hangs. An evergreen, I thought. Semper virens. The scientific name for coastal redwoods literally means “always living.” He is here with us today. Jonathan lives within us and will continue to live within us.
So may we devote our time on this earth to live more like Jonathan. May we be grounded in humility. May we imbue every day with humor.
May we be dedicated to the things that matter. May we be more gentle with ourselves and with others. And may we act from a place of selfless generosity.
Although Jonathan Zhao would be last in the alphabet, he will be the first diploma we award here today...
Ms. Hemm invited Jonathan’s close Pinewood friends to join her onstage for the diploma presentation, celebrating Jonathan and his family by surrounding them with the love of the Pinewood community.
His memory will accompany his classmates in the journey ahead, and Jonathan’s family will always be a cherished part of ours.
