Each fall, I welcome the opportunity to share this Impact Report with you. It is a moment to reflect on the milestones that defined our past year, those that mark meaningful progress, celebrate individual and collective achievement, and reafrm our shared purpose as a school community.
Pinewood is a special place, and as I look back on the last year, I see clearly how our strength lies in our close-knit community. From the outstanding participation in our Annual Fund First campaign, to backstage volunteers at theater productions, to thoughtful discussions in our monthly GLR meetings, you - the parents - lend your time and your support, partnering with us to enrich the student experience.
The 2024-25 school year was a time of unprecedented growth, and laid the foundation for even more exciting changes to come. We launched the Upper Campus Modernization Project, for which we’ve already raised over $61.5 million towards our vision of a sustainable, cutting-edge campus.
As our community continues to evolve, we are reminded that meaningful progress doesn’t happen by chance, it’s built through intentional efort, shared vision, and a willingness to embrace change. From new learning spaces to innovative programs, we are preparing students not just for the world as it is, but for the world as it will be.
This growth is exciting, but even more important is what remains unchanged. At every stage, we are committed to sustaining the core values that define Pinewood: academic excellence, character development, close-knit community, and a student-centered approach to learning.
The progress captured in these pages would not be possible without you. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude for your partnership—for your generous financial support, your time, your talents, and your belief in our mission. Whether through giving, volunteering, or showing up in support of our students and teachers, your contributions make an extraordinary diference.
With gratitude,
Scott Riches, President and Head of School
“At every stage, we are committed to sustaining the core values that define Pinewood: academic excellence, character development, closeknit community, and a student-centered approach to learning.”

STEM AT PINEWOOD
Pinewood’s comprehensive Computer Science & Engineering (CS&E) curriculum prepares students to meet new challenges - and embrace new opportunities - in a rapidly changing technological world.
From their very first year on Lower Campus, students are introduced to early programming concepts, robotics, and design thinking through hands-on learning and cross-curricular projects. During their time at Middle Campus, daily lessons transition students to text-based programming, with a focus on Python by sixth grade. Through a dedicated Maker Space, they engage with tools like CAD, 3D printing, and laser cutting within a Design-Thinking framework.
As students move to Junior High, required CS&E courses address topics like digital citizenship, content creation and curation, coding, and programming. Elective High School courses and extracurriculars then allow students to specialize in advanced topics of interest like Machine Learning, Mobile App Development, and more. AI literacy within the CS&E program empowers students to progress from learning how to use AI tools to designing and developing AI products.
Cross-Campus Collaboration
Members of the Upper Campus club, We Who Code, visited Lower Campus to engage younger students in a play-based exploration of foundational programming concepts.
Tech Challenge Showcase
The Middle Campus after-school Makers Club challenges students with fun and functional robotics challenges. Many club students also participated in the Bay Area Tech Challenge, with six Pinewood teams competing and winning four total awards — including Outstanding Overall— demonstrating Panther innovation, teamwork, and engineering smarts.
NEW: Of-Campus Robotics Lab
This year, Pinewood launched a new of-campus facility in Palo Alto to support the continued growth of our robotics program. The 6,000 square foot Pinewood Engineering And Robotics Lab (PEARL) will provide spaces for design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and practice, giving our students the resources to continue their growth in STEM.

Theater AT PINEWOOD
“ Pinewood’s theater program has taught me how to collaborate with many diferent people, problem-solve quickly, and trust in myself and my teammates in high pressure moments.
Theater and the Performing Arts are a fundamental component of a Pinewood education, empowering students to express themselves clearly and confidently not just on stage, but in life. Every single student K-7 participates in one production each year, reaching 8th grade with over 300 hours of theatrical instruction, rehearsal, and performance.
High school students further immerse themselves through drama, musical theater, and technical theater courses - plus extracurriculars like a capellawith 25% of students continuing to grow through the performing arts.
This year, Pinewood put on 26 fantastic shows across our three campuseswith a bonus performance at the Green & Gold Gala courtesy of our 5th-grade pirates!
Athletics
AT PINEWOOD
Initiatives like Move It Mondays get Lower Campus students outside and playing, developing positive habits and associations around physical activity. By the time students reach Middle Campus, they have the opportunity to compete in after-school sports beginning in 4th grade.
This early involvement in team sports helps young students build leadership, teamwork, and resilience from the start.
Pinewood has nineteen diferent Upper Campus sport team oferings between JV and Varsity, all led by an experienced and highly dedicated coaching staf. This personalized attention helps student-athletes achieve both athletic development and personal growth. Leadership and discipline through athletics are valuable skills on and of the field.
Looking Ahead: Pinewood Soccer is leveling up in 2025-26 with the recent hires of experienced K-6 and 7-12 Directors of Soccer!
A Historic Track & Field Season
Comprising thirty-six athletes and five coaches, the Middle Campus track & field team trained diligently throughout the season. 78% percent of the team was new to the sport, with specialized coaches teaching needed skills for distance, sprinting, jumping, and throwing events. The hard work paid of, with many athletes achieving a Personal Best finish - and the team winning a school record of 27 ribbons during the League Finals!

Excellence in Girls Basketball
With dozens of alumni competing at the collegiate, and even professional levels, Pinewood Girls Basketball has built a legacy of developing well-rounded athletes who excel on and of the court.
This year, the team’s competitive season began at the prestigious ‘Iolani Prep Classic in Hawai’i, one of the nation’s premier high school basketball tournaments, where they secured an impressive third-place finish. Riding that momentum into the regular season, the Panthers went on to finish 2nd overall in the CCS Open Division.
Senior Jolyn Ding capped of the season with remarkable honors, being named both the San Francisco Chronicle Peninsula/South Bay Player of the Year and the CCS Scholar Athlete of the Year- a true testament to the program’s commitment to excellence in athletics and academics alike.

Beyond Campus AT PINEWOOD
The Peru trip was a truly unforgettable experience. It meant so much to me to meet girls my age who gave a newfound perspective to life, and most of all bond with students in diferent grades and create lasting memories. This trip encouraged me to be present and connect with people on a deeper level.
- Freshman Nerea Amezcua
At Pinewood, learning goes beyond the classroom. Through purposeful of-campus experiences, students explore new environments, engage their senses, and deepen their understanding. By connecting with people, places, and ideas in the real world, they build the curiosity and critical thinking skills essential for meaningful learning.

Marine Conservation meets SEL
First-graders visited the Marine Science Institute in Redwood City, where hands-on learning inspired values of marine conservation and stewardship. Also enjoying the field trip were the SEL Kimochis. Not only did these plushies encourage students to be respectful and responsible of-campus - but conservation was a new lens for SEL principles of caring for others and the earth.
Angel Island: Multi-Disciplinary Reflections
Sixth graders traveled to Angel Island by bus and by ferry, where they learned about the history of immigration and exclusion in the Bay Area. Upon returning to campus, art teacher Leila Beverleigh guided students through artistic reflections on the landscape and history. Students produced watercolor paintings of the natural view, and poems reflecting on the immigrant experience.
Language and Cultural Immersion in Peru
Profes Collantes and Orduña led a Spanish Language Immersion and Service Learning trip to Peru with a group of students grades 7-12. Through tours of historic sites like Machu Picchu and demonstrations of traditional weaving and pottery, students immersed themselves in Peruvian culture. Market trips and a visit to a girls secondary school, where Pinewood students dug composting latrines and played games with their Peruvian counterparts, built both language skills and cross-cultural understanding.
Community Events
AT PINEWOOD
Cultural celebrations are an important part of the Pinewood experience. In our classroom curricula, we use a “mirrors & windows” analogy for thinking about representation. Mirrors reflect a student’s lived experience back to them; windows shine a light on the experiences of others. These perspectives both celebrate students’ identities and build understanding for their classmates. Whether or not the festival is unfamiliar or celebrated at home, all families are welcome and encouraged to attend!
Jamboree
On October 19, Pinewood hosted the annual Jamboree, bringing the school community together for a fun afternoon of K-12 performances, carnival games, and treats. In addition to family fun, the Jamboree is an opportunity for student groups to fundraise for the year ahead. Students demonstrate leadership and school spirit as they prepare to sell items and make decisions on how to use the funds.
Lunar New Year
Pinewood celebrated Lunar New Year on February 4 at Upper Campus. The event began with a traditional Lion Dance, followed by a bufet catered by Asian Street Eatery and activities like calligraphy, jianzi, and paper cutting. Upper Campus Mandarin students emceed the event, demonstrating their high-level language skills.
“I had to speak entirely in Mandarin. The support I received from teachers, students, and parents throughout the process was so special. Everyone was so helpful and so kind to me; it allowed me to really enjoy the role of MC, despite being nervous at first.”
-Junior Mailey Wang
Holi
Pinewood celebrated Holi on March 8 at Upper Campus. Attendees enjoyed a variety of food catered from Chaat Bhavan, live cricket stations, crafts, student performances, and the main highlight - playing colors!
“Holi is a way to celebrate love, laughter, and renewal while keeping our culture alive at home away from home. Within the Pinewood community, the celebration became a beautiful way to share culture, connect with others, and strengthen the bonds that make our community feel like family.”
- Sugandh Shaikhar, Holi Parent Chair

The Green & Gold Gala
The Annual Benefit Auction is a cherished Pinewood tradition celebrating community and philanthropy. In March 2025, over 250 Pinewood community members gathered at Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club in their best green and gold attire for an evening of fun, food, and fundraising. The event raised over $200,000 for the Faculty and Staf Professional Development and Graduate Study Reimbursement program, supporting our faculty as lifelong learners. By staying current in their fields, Pinewood teachers continue to create exceptional learning environments for our students.

Julie Andresen
Lower Campus Dept Head of History and Geography
Julie earned her Master of Arts in Educational Leadership, with a concentration in teacher support, from SDSU in 2024. She started her master’s degree 31 years ago, but raising two daughters and putting them through college resulted in that dream being put on pause. The generosity of Pinewood’s Graduate Studies Reimbursement Program was the catalyst for me to go for it!
“I am applying what I’ve learned to foster teacher collaboration and enhance instructional practices within the K–6 history department. This graduate-level preparation is directly informing my ability to lead with strategic vision while ensuring high-quality learning experiences for students.

“This past summer I attended the San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival at the Rady Shell waterfront venue. It was a beautiful two day experience that celebrated Black artists and featured prominent female musicians. The highlight of the event for me was hearing and seeing all the interesting ways that musicians arranged their music with their audience in mind, performing songs that people love in unique ways that were very creative.
Our students will benefit from the introduction of new styles of music that I learned about at the festival. I now have a newfound appreciation for smooth jazz and the music of Black culture, which I will be sharing in the classroom.”

“I was grateful for the chance to attend the NAIS People of Color Conference (PoCC) this December, an inspiring conference that brought together educators committed to equity and inclusion. One of the most powerful moments was the keynote by Sekou Andrews, who encouraged us to “splash splash” and create waves of meaningful change. The sessions and conversations gave me practical strategies to better support students of color and celebrate the richness of our community’s diversity. I returned to the classroom energized to amplify student voices and continue providing a space where every learner feels seen, valued, and empowered.”

PINEWOOD STAFF AND FACULTY
Pinewood’s strength lies in our ability to recruit, retain, and advance excellent staf and faculty. On par with the national average, 64% of our operating budget goes to salaries and benefits. Competitive ofer packages help us attract the best educators and administrators to our campuses. A strong school culture built on respect and support helps keep them.
“My experience in coding, design thinking, and maker tools has helped me create fantastic and whimsical projects this year like 3D-printed bobbleheads, mechanical pinball centerpieces, personalized laser cut maps, and more.”

“I love my colleagues and the close-knit community. Pinewood deeply honors and respects our role as both professionals and human beings; it has been a privilege and a joy to teach here for fifteen years.”

Associate
Head of School
A Pinewood Evergreen and long-time administrator, Kyle is Pinewood’s new Associate Head of School. He previously held positions at Pinewood as a coach, Spanish teacher, High School Assistant Athletic Director, Middle Campus Athletic Director, Director of Communications, and most recently, Director of Student Life.
“It’s given me a tour of Pinewood,” Kyle says, “and it’s helpful because most of the departments I now manage, I’ve been part of from the other side.” He completed his Master’s in Educational Leadership & Administration from George Washington University in 2022, equipping him with the tools to think strategically about the direction of Pinewood and its programming.
“I absolutely loved my time as a student at Pinewood, from the teachers to the community - and my motivation is to provide that same Pinewood experience for our current students. I hope that years from now, they can look back and feel the same way about Pinewood that I do.”
The longevity of our faculty and staf tenures is a testament to Pinewood’s strong community. Each year, we celebrate major tenure milestones for our faculty and staf. To the right is the list of milestone anniversaries at Pinewood in 2024-25.
