A LETTER FROM Dr. Dana Markham ’18H

Dear Pine Crest School Community,
Momentum is powerful. It is the force that transforms potential into progress, innovation into impact and vision into reality. At Pine Crest, momentum is created when inspired faculty, ambitious students and generous donors come together around a shared purpose. This year’s President’s Report, “A Portrait of Momentum: Perspectives on Innovation, Leadership and the Future,” captures the dynamic energy your philanthropic support creates throughout our school community.
As you explore these pages, you’ll witness momentum in action—students making an impact, faculty pioneering new approaches and alumni creating positive change worldwide. The world today’s Pine Crest students will inherit is complex and rapidly evolving. We must equip students not only with knowledge, but also with creativity, resilience and ethical grounding.
This momentum extends far beyond our campus. Our graduates enter universities and careers equipped not just with knowledge, but with the innovative mindset and leadership capabilities to tackle humanity’s most pressing challenges. They become the entrepreneurs launching sustainable businesses, the researchers discovering life-changing treatments and the artists redefining creative expression.
Each gift to Pine Crest is more than support for today. You are investing in the leaders, ideas and breakthroughs of tomorrow. Thank you for believing in our mission and being part of this extraordinary journey forward.
With gratitude,

Dr. Dana Markham ’18H President

For Lisa and John Hayes, Pine Crest quickly became more than a school. It became a place where their children could thrive, explore and grow in ways they hadn’t imagined.

THE HAYES FAMILY
A Portrait of Partnership
Their journey to Pine Crest began when their son, Joseph ’31, attended a Pine Crest summer program as a kindergartner. Lisa recalls watching his excitement as he came home each day brimming with curiosity and questions. “I just saw a different side of him,” she said. “His brain was on fire, and I hadn’t really seen that from school before. I thought, if this is camp, then the academics must be similar.”
That spark led the Hayes family to enroll their three children at Pine Crest, where they’ve discovered opportunities for each of them to pursue their passions. Their daughter Anna ’32, a swimmer, has also found joy in the arts—last year she performed in the school’s production of “Aladdin.” Joseph, a golfer, thrives in competitive robotics and the Technology Students Association (TSA), enjoying the unique opportunity to balance athletics and STEM. Their youngest, Gia ’35, in third grade, is exploring her own path and shows signs she may follow her love of running.
“The beauty of Pine Crest is that all three of our kids, who are so different, can find what they love on one campus,” Lisa said. “There’s truly something for everyone.”
The Hayes family’s generosity to Pine Crest is guided by that same

philosophy. Education, Lisa explains, is one of their greatest passions and an area they believe is worth supporting wholeheartedly. “Education is such a valuable asset for every child,” she said. “It will always be on our radar, especially when it comes to supporting teachers and professional development. We want to partner with the school to make sure teachers feel supported in their careers, because everyone benefits from that.”
Lisa also emphasizes that giving feels natural because of the thoughtful way Pine Crest approaches its future. “The school is not complacent where they are. They’re always looking for the next step,” Lisa said. “Whether it’s partnerships with institutions like the London School of Economics or entrepreneurial classes in the Upper School, Pine Crest is always striving to innovate. As a parent, that’s exciting.”
The School’s commitment to building leaders matches that spirit of innovation. Lisa has watched Joseph, who is naturally reserved, step into a new level of responsibility since entering Middle School. “For him to just know what he needs to do, contact his teachers and step up without me telling him—that comes from the school,” she said. “It’s not just academics. Pine Crest is preparing them to be functioning adults.”
The Hayes family has also felt supported through Pine Crest’s commitment to partnership with parents. Lisa points to programs like Head of Lower School Dr. Kristin Sheely’s parent book clubs, which open conversations on topics such as social media and adolescence. “It’s not something where she’s teaching us— it’s just gathering parents to discuss what is happening, and it’s so helpful,” Lisa said. “It makes me feel like the School isn’t just supporting my kids— it’s supporting us as parents too.”
Although the Hayes family has only been at Pine Crest for two years, they already feel deeply connected. John grew up locally and remembers running on the Pine Crest track and swimming in the pool as a child while attending another area school. For Lisa, who moved to South Florida from Buffalo more than 20 years ago, Pine Crest represents not just a school but a community for her children to grow up alongside their many cousins and extended family.
Whether it’s the myriad of opportunities on campus, the balance of academics and extracurriculars or the community spirit that defines Pine Crest, the Hayes family is grateful for what the school has brought into their lives—and excited to give back in ways that will impact students and teachers for years to come.

LEADERSHIP FUTURE

Innovation, leadership and preparation for the future don’t happen by chance at Pine Crest. They happen by design. Through three-year programs such as Social Entrepreneurship and Science Research, to learning spaces like the Zimmerman Family Innovation Labs and Mintz Family Innovation Lab, students are immersed in experiences that expand their thinking and sharpen their leadership capabilities. These opportunities are possible through philanthropy. Your support fuels the ideas and environments that give students the tools and the confidence to shape what’s next.

INNOVATION AND IMAGINATION:
Taking Students to Perform at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre
When Dr. Alexandra Parsons traveled to London in the summer of 2022 and took her seat on the hard wooden benches inside the Globe Theatre, she had no idea that the performance of Shakespeare’s play “King Lear” she was about to witness what would become a source of inspiration for her classroom in the Pine Crest Upper School English wing. The experience—visceral, immersive and alive—stayed with her. What if her ninth grade English students could feel what she had felt that day? What if they could step inside the Globe, or even onto the stage itself?
Thanks to the school’s partnership with OptimaEd and Pine Crest’s commitment to faculty innovation, Dr. Parsons made that happen.
After taking part in an optional schoolwide professional learning course in the summer of 2024 about using virtual reality in the classroom, Dr. Parsons worked with OptimaEd to design a custom unit that would bring her English I Honors students back to 16th-century England and into a reconstructed Globe Theatre. She had never used virtual reality (VR). “I put a VR headset on for the first time at Pine Crest,” she said. Over that

DR. ALEXANDRA PARSONS
summer, she worked closely with a curriculum designer from OptimaEd to envision the experience. They tested various possibilities, from walking through the cobblestone streets of Elizabethan London to staging scenes inside the Globe. While the theater itself had already been developed within the VR platform, Dr. Parsons customized the lesson plan to align with her instructional goals and vision.
Before students donned their headsets and picked up their hand controllers to step into Shakespeare’s world, she grounded them in the author’s life and times. Her students read selections from
“The Age of Shakespeare” by Françoise Laroque, which provides visual and historical context for the playwright’s world, covering everything from medicine and folklore to monarchy and faith. Understanding this backdrop, and especially the significance of the Globe itself, gave students the cultural literacy they needed to engage fully with the experience ahead.
In this virtual environment, students were asked to perform Jacques’ famous “All the World’s a Stage” monologue from Shakespeare’s “As You Like It.” But they weren’t just memorizing and reciting it; they were also embodying it on the stage of the Globe Theatre, in avatar form, with their classmates’ avatars filling the surrounding tiers and gallery spaces as the audience. To deepen this experience and develop their VR skills, students were asked to incorporate FX props, virtual

objects that could be placed, scaled and moved alongside them, drawn from a searchable online library within the platform. Students selected FX props, such as a gavel and a skull, as visual representations of the stages of life Jacques describes—the gavel symbolizing judgment in the justice stage and the skull representing the inevitability of death in life’s final stage—thereby deepening students’ literary analysis through symbolic expression.
This immersive setup also had a noticeable impact on students’ performances. “In this virtual version of the ‘wooden O,’ as Shakespeare called the Globe, students felt less exposed and less judged,” Dr. Parsons noted. “Because they weren’t looking directly at one another, but instead at each other’s avatars, reciting Shakespeare aloud became less intimidating. As a result, students often felt more confident and more invested in their delivery.”
Students also had the opportunity to interact with a virtual Shakespeare avatar, asking questions about his writing habits, inspirations and favorite play.

While the VR unit stood on its own, it also served as a springboard into the class’s next major work, “Julius Caesar.”
After learning about Shakespeare’s world and experimenting with performance, students were better prepared to dive into his historical play about persuasion and political betrayal.

“When people hear the word ‘innovation,’ they may think of robotics labs or makerspaces,” Dr. Parsons said. “But English teachers are innovating too. We’re finding new ways to foster students’ engagement with literature while also cultivating creativity and technological fluency. To me, that’s what future-ready learning really looks like.”
Dr. Parsons believes these innovations also support the most essential futureready skill of all: critical thinking. “In a world where students can now generate writing with a few clicks, it’s
the critical thinking that matters most,” she said. “I believe the future of English classrooms will depend on how well we teach students to think critically by analyzing, reflecting on and engaging deeply with literature. Virtual reality is one tool that can support this work. It invites students to develop the 21stcentury skills they’ll need in our rapidly changing world, no matter what the future holds.”
Her plans are already expanding. She hopes to build targeted VR experiences into additional texts and grade levels, such as exploring the Roaring Twenties during a 10th grade unit on Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” and visiting a Holocaust memorial as part of a ninth grade unit on “Night” by Elie Wiesel.
This work is possible because of Pine Crest’s culture of support and philanthropic investment. “What I would want to say to philanthropic supporters of Pine Crest is ‘thank you,’” Dr. Parsons said. “Thank you for supporting us and believing in our vision for students. Your generosity is what allows us to turn ideas into action and give students unforgettable learning experiences that help prepare them for whatever comes next.”

PROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP THROUGH LEARNING
Dr. Wendy Swanson is inspired by the Pine Crest School faculty each and every day—and that’s exactly what she loves about her work. As Director of Faculty Learning and Recruitment Coordinator at Pine Crest School, she supports professional learning alongside Dr. Lisa Ockerman, Vice President of Academics and Strategic Initiatives. Together, they champion a culture of growth, innovation and connection across both campuses.
“Our faculty are truly outstanding,” Dr. Swanson said. “Someone will share an idea they are working on, and it is our job to help bring those ideas to life. Teachers or members from different departments will chat with us about a webinar, podcast or something they learned from a colleague. These initial conversions are the basis for developing new learning opportunities. That open-door energy defines professional learning at Pine Crest. Whether it’s a spark of curiosity, a new instructional method or takeaways from attending a collaborative workshop, faculty have access to the resources, people and support they need to hone their craft as exceptional educators.
“Supporting faculty and staff with professional development is vital to
the culture that President Dr. Dana Markham ’18H has built here,” Dr. Swanson said. “Her motto ‘do it better than the day before,’ has truly taken root. Our faculty are lifelong learners.”
That mindset begins on day one. New faculty participate in a multi-day orientation followed by a yearlong onboarding program that helps them thrive at Pine Crest. “It’s not just about acclimating,” Dr. Swanson said. “It’s about giving new faculty the support they need for personal and professional growth as they transition to the community through a trusting relationship and collegiality.”
Each new faculty member is paired with a mentor to guide and advise them throughout their first year. The onboarding and mentoring program, known as Teacher Excellence Achieved through Mentoring (TEAM), was initially designed by Dr. Ockerman. Dr. Swanson and Mrs. Jessie Metzger cochair the mentoring program for Lower, Middle and Upper School teachers by partnering with the Divisions’ administrative teams to customize monthly meeting topics to address the needs of each year’s new faculty cohort. Other faculty members are invited as guest speakers to share instructional

practices and tips on what works best for students at Pine Crest.
One of Pine Crest’s most powerful learning models is “Teachers Teaching Teachers,” the signature professional development event held each year before school starts. Faculty and staff present workshops for one another based on their own research, coursework or passions. It is a celebration of shared expertise and cross-campus connection. “You can see a faculty member’s growth year after year,” Dr. Swanson said. “The person may start with curiosity about a particular teaching topic or instructional approach. Then, they research and learn about that topic. Eventually, that same person is leading a session to share their newly acquired knowledge with others. It’s a wonderful way to elevate our knowledge base as a community.”

Dr. Swanson also organizes professional development opportunities to bring educational experts to campus. One notable example was the year-long partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute, the leading nonprofit and nonpartisan organization dedicated to K–12 history education. The Middle School faculty was exploring ways to support the development of critical thinking and literacy skills to prepare students for the transition to Upper School coursework. In-person and virtual training sessions were provided by university professors and master teachers from the Institute. Faculty members participated in the training, contributing valuable perspectives and enriching the collaborative learning environment. Sustaining these crossdivisional conversations throughout the year fosters deeper connections among faculty, encourages the exchange of ideas and strengthens the continuity of instruction across campuses.
Professional development opportunities support faculty beyond academic
content development as well. Dr. Swanson continues to ensure that faculty are prepared to continue supporting students’ social and emotional well-being. In Lower School, a goal is to provide all faculty with Responsive Classroom™ Elementary Core training. The evidence-based approach allows teachers to create safe, joyful and engaging classrooms. Last summer, 24 academic, fine arts and athletics faculty members participated in a four-day, in-person training with a Responsive Classroom trainer. As a follow-up to the training, a Responsive Classroom representative conducted a site visit to provide insight into the schoolwide implementation of the research-based practices and provide additional resources to support teachers and staff.
Looking ahead, Pine Crest is continuing to expand opportunities for professional learning. From utilizing in-person and virtual meeting spaces to asynchronous online courses created by faculty for faculty, the school is staying on the
leading edge. The Markham Center for Teaching and Learning includes the Weinberg Faculty Learning Lab—a flexible, creative space designed to host training, lunch-and-learn events, collaborative planning sessions and more.
“If a teacher can dream it, we want to make it happen,” Dr. Swanson said. “This space will give us even more ways to make the faculty’s ideas a reality.”
She also knows this level of support wouldn’t be possible without philanthropy. “To our donors, I want to say ‘thank you,’” she said. “Your support is elevating our teachers, our staff and our students. We are able to transform teaching and learning at Pine Crest. Because of you, our faculty have the time, tools and encouragement to continue growing and learning. And that benefits every child in every classroom.”

EMPOWERING THE FUTURE THROUGH CHARACTER AND CARE
At Pine Crest School, academics or advanced technology don’t solely define future readiness. It’s also built through something deeper: character. For Dr. Krista Promnitz ’97, Executive Director of Educational Support Services, character development is one of the most powerful future skills a student can gain.

“Our mission is to help students grow into independent, resilient learners,” said Dr. Promnitz. “We want them to have the flexibility and the grit to be successful in the world long after they leave Pine Crest.”
Dr. Promnitz leads a team that supports students academically, socially and emotionally—from executive functioning coaching and accommodations to social-emotional curriculum and one-on-one support. But what makes the department unique is its flexibility and responsiveness to students’ evolving needs.
One of the department’s most impactful initiatives in recent years emerged not from assumptions, but from listening.
“After COVID, we came together and talked about what our Middle School students really needed,” said Dr. Promnitz. “And what we thought they needed and what they actually needed turned out to be two different things.” Rather than more content or academic
review, what surfaced was a need for support to manage the transition from the adult-directed structure of Lower School to the more independent demands of Middle School life. “Sixth grade students transition to alternative schedules, subject-specific teachers with their own testing and homework requirements, and expanded after-school programming—so many incredible opportunities for autonomy,” she explained. “But, sometimes, they need help bridging that transition.”
In response, the Educational Support Services team designed a Middle School executive functioning program—a tailored, skills-based support system that helps students build routines, manage time, prioritize tasks and take ownership of their learning journey.
The results have been powerful. “I just sat down with several Middle School learning specialists, and what kept coming up was how ready their eighth graders are for ninth grade,” she said. “They’ve learned how to manage their
Dr Krista Promnitz ’97

responsibilities, how to advocate for themselves and how to apply the skills we’ve helped them build over the past 18 months.”
Beyond staff-led initiatives, students themselves are taking the lead, creating and launching support programs with help from faculty and administration. One recent example is GRIEF Lift, a peer-based support group co-founded by two Upper School students to help grieving students find connection and community.
“It’s a perfect example of what’s possible when we don’t have to say ‘no,’” said Dr. Promnitz. “At some schools, a student idea like that might get stopped
by budget constraints or red tape. But here, because of philanthropic support, we were able to say yes—and not just yes, but ‘Let’s help you grow this.’ We brought in counseling staff, administrative support and resources to help them reach both campuses and divisions.”
That mindset—one of agility, empowerment and encouragement—is what Dr. Promnitz believes will define the future of education at Pine Crest.
“We’re moving toward an even more integrated model of support,” she said. “We’re blending small-group sessions with classroom co-teaching and focusing on real-world carryover.
"Our goal is for these skills—resilience, empathy and emotional intelligence—not to live in isolated lessons, but to be part of everyday learning."
DR. KRISTA PROMNITZ ’97
Our goal is for these skills—resilience, empathy and emotional intelligence— not to live in isolated lessons, but to be part of everyday learning.” None of this, she added, would be possible without the generosity of Pine Crest donors.
“What philanthropy makes possible isn’t always visible, it’s not a sign or a building,” she said. “It’s the ability to train our educators deeply, to give students the tools they need and to say yes to ideas that matter. We don’t have to pause momentum because of funding. We get to move forward.”
For Dr. Promnitz, who once walked these same halls as a Pine Crest student herself, that ability to meet students where they are and guide them forward is the heart of the work.
“When we talk about preparing students for the future,” she said, “this is what it looks like. Not just learning the material, but learning who they are, how to lead, how to care for others and how to keep going.”

The Student Perspective ON INNOVATION, AND THE FUTURE

Perspective INNOVATION, LEADERSHIP FUTURE

Momentum is visible in our students’ journeys, from how they respond to setbacks to how they step into new roles with purpose. Parents see it in the quiet growth and the bold leaps: children who become more empathetic, more collaborative, more willing to lead. These aren’t just academic transformations; they’re human ones. And they reflect the values at the heart of Pine Crest’s vision for innovation, leadership and the future, all values your generosity helps bring to life.

EXPLORING THE FUTURE: ONE ROBOT AT A TIME
For Middle School student Juan Yoshikay ’31, innovation isn’t just something he reads about—it’s something he builds with his own hands. As a member of Pine Crest’s Middle School robotics team, Juan recently traveled to the VEX World Championship, where he and his teammates competed alongside students from around the globe.
“It was all new for us,” Juan said. “Just getting used to the convention center, running from one match to the next. It was a lot! But what stood out most to me were the different teams, the different cultures. Talking with them, seeing how they designed their robots— it was really a learning experience.”
Juan has been involved in robotics for two years, starting in fifth grade after hearing about it from friends. “I didn’t know much at the time, but it sounded cool—like something from the future,”

with a fast gear ratio and overlapping mechanisms powered by rubber bands. “At first, I used to think it was only the international teams that could build really advanced robots,” Juan admitted. “But once we saw our robot actually working, I thought, ‘wait, we can do this, too.’ That was a confidence moment for me.”
Beyond the mechanics, Juan says robotics has taught him how to think like an engineer by carefully identifying problems, brainstorming solutions, testing ideas and adjusting based on the results. “Even in school or in life, I think about what the goal is, what the challenges are and how I’m going to get there.”
The lessons haven’t been limited to technical or mechanical skills. His team received a sportsmanship award at Worlds for their empathy and support of other teams, even when opponents’
he said. That leap of curiosity has since become a passion, especially once he discovered the creative freedom that robotics offers. “There’s no one way to solve the challenge. You can try catapults, wheels, claws, whatever you can think of, as long as it works within the rules.”
This year, his team designed a robot capable of launching balls through a high target and rolling them into a lower goal. Inspired by designs they researched online, they built what Juan calls a “back roller bot,” complete

robots broke mid-match. “We didn’t want to make anyone feel bad—we’ve been in that situation ourselves,” he said. “We just wanted everyone to have a good experience.”
Teamwork, he added, was a big part of the journey. “We were probably one of the most complicated teams, with many strong personalities! But we learned how to work together. It taught us leadership, communication and how to respect each other’s differences.”
When asked what makes Pine Crest’s approach to innovation special, Juan didn’t hesitate. “It’s the freedom. Our coaches let us explore, experiment and make mistakes. That’s how we learn. And even beyond robotics, I think Pine Crest keeps setting the bar— whether it’s with technology, the arts or how beautiful our campus is.”

SHAPING THE FUTURE THROUGH LEADERSHIP WITH HEART AND VISION
When Johanna Henry ’26 steps into a leadership role, she brings more than just enthusiasm—she brings purpose. Elected Student Council President for her senior year, Johanna knows what it means to work for something and grow through it. After winning class president as a freshman and sophomore, she faced disappointment junior year when she didn’t earn the role she hoped for. Still, she showed up, served as a student council representative and ran again. This time, she won.
“It meant so much because I almost didn’t run,” Johanna said. “But my friends believed in me and helped me every step of the way—they pushed me to go all in.”
She credits that group of close friends and family for helping her write speeches, distribute posters and rally support. “They reminded me that leadership means showing up even when it’s hard, and even when you’re unsure of the outcome.”
Johanna’s campaign speech reflected that energy. Walking away from the

microphone and podium, where her running mates spoke from, she stopped center stage in Stacy Auditorium and asked, “Can you hear me in the back?” and delivered the line that her friends and family insisted would seal her victory: “My friends told me not to run—but I don’t take no for an answer.”
Now, as a senior leader, Johanna wants to inspire others to find their voice, too. “I want to make sure students feel like they have a place to lead, even if they don’t think they’re the ‘type.’ I’d love to create more ways for students to be involved, especially freshmen or students who may not think they have a shot.”
Leadership, for Johanna, is as much about action as it is about awareness. “It’s knowing when to step up and when to step back,” she said. “Being effective means being able to adapt—whether that’s hyping up the student body or stepping in with strength when things need to get done.”
Johanna’s leadership isn’t limited to student council. A lifelong swimmer who started at age three, she has also
been an intern with a real estate development firm, a member of the three-year social entrepreneurship program and a teen ambassador for the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, helping promote student engagement in the arts.
“They reminded me that leadership means showing up even when it’s hard, and even when you’re unsure of the outcome.”
JOHANNA HENRY ’26
Her experience at Pine Crest has been central to her evolution as a leader. “I came here in first grade, and I was so shy,” Johanna said. “My teachers helped me come out of my shell. From there, I just kept growing.”
She’s quick to recognize how her support system has shaped her confidence, from her parents to her peers to faculty mentors like Mrs.
Keri Kolettis, Vice President of Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship, who encouraged her to break the mold and try new things. “I’ve learned not to take things too critically,” she said. “Losing a race or an election doesn’t mean I failed. My coaches, friends and family taught me to do things for myself and keep moving forward.”
Johanna is already thinking about the impact she wants to leave behind. She’s hoping to create more leadership pathways for students and make student life more inclusive and collaborative. “I want to be the kind of leader who helps others find their place,” she said.
While the college application process has not yet begun for Johanna, her sights are set on an institution that prioritizes leadership development within its students.
Whether she’s leading in the classroom, on the swim team or on stage, Johanna Henry is showing her peers—and herself—what it means to lead with intention and heart.

THE FUTURE IS EMPATHETIC: STUDENTS LEADING WITH PURPOSE

At Pine Crest, students are not only preparing for the future—they’re shaping it. For Charlotte Thies ’25 and Jake Weidenfeld ’25, that future is rooted in empathy, leadership and the courage to connect through shared experiences.
Together, they co-founded GRIEF Lift, with GRIEF as an acronym for Gaining Resources Including Everlasting Friendships. GRIEF Lift is a studentled support group for peers who have lost a primary caregiver. What began as a deeply personal response to grief has grown into a thriving, cross-campus initiative that’s helping Pine Crest students feel seen, heard and supported.
“I was put in therapy the day after my dad passed,” said Charlotte. “But I never felt like my therapists truly understood me. When Jake reached out and shared his own story, it helped me feel normal and heard. That connection is what started GRIEF Lift.” For Jake, who lost his father in sixth
grade, the idea of reaching out was personal. “I didn’t know anyone my age going through something similar. So when Charlotte lost her dad, I messaged her right away. I thought maybe I could help her—but I didn’t expect how much it would help me too.”
They launched the group with support from faculty and administrators, learning through trial and error how to reach their peers. “We didn’t really know how to go about it at first,” Jake said. “It was just the two of us and a few others. Sometimes it was just us. But we kept showing up.”
That perseverance paid off. GRIEF Lift now meets regularly during advisory periods to allow for consistency and privacy. Meetings range from quiet reflection to shared stories, depending on who is ready to speak. “There’s never pressure,” said Jake. “Sometimes just listening is enough. But over time, people start to open up. That’s when the healing really begins.”
Julie and Jake ’25 Weidenfeld, Charlotte ’25 and Melissa (Roder) ’89 Thies

“I want to build something that makes a difference in the world.”
JAKE WEIDENFELD ’25
The group has since expanded to both campuses and two Divisions with plans to move into the Middle Schools in the 2025-26 school year. When the group meets with Lower School students, the sessions can range from playing games to helping with homework, activities that Jake and Charlotte know are helping to foster connection and give these young students a community of support. Charlotte describes the impact of watching students connect across age groups. “There’s something you can teach and learn from anyone, no matter how far along you are in the grieving process,” she said.
They’ve also found meaning beyond the
meetings. Charlotte and Jake volunteer with Experience Camps, a national nonprofit supporting grieving children. Jake co-organized a charity golf tournament, WWDD: What Would Don Do, named for his late father and benefitting Experience Camps. The event brought together more than 230 members of his father’s community and raised funds to support young people just like Jake and Charlotte.
The skills Charlotte and Jake have gained through this work—empathy, resilience, service, leadership and emotional intelligence are future-ready in every sense. As the world grows more complex, these human-centered qualities will define strong leadership and shape compassionate communities.
“There’s a lot of trial and error in launching something like this,” said Charlotte. “But we learned to be patient, to keep showing up even when no one else did and to believe in what we were doing.”

“I want to build something that makes a difference in the world,” said Jake. “Whether it helps millions or just a few, that’s my goal now. GRIEF Lift changed my life.”
They credit Pine Crest not only for supporting them through loss, but for giving them the platform and resources to build something meaningful from it. “Pine Crest never said no,” said Charlotte. “They helped us set up meetings, reach the right people and bring our ideas to life.”
That support created something lasting. “We may be graduating, but GRIEF Lift will continue,” said Jake. “And hopefully it’ll expand beyond Pine Crest.”
In the hands of students like Charlotte and Jake, the future looks more connected, more compassionate and more human.

A LETTER FROM THE Board of Trustees

Dear Pine Crest School Community,
On behalf of Pine Crest’s Board of Trustees, thank you for your role in creating the extraordinary momentum showcased in this report. The student and faculty stories represent the powerful progress your support makes possible.
Under Dr. Markham’s forward-thinking leadership, this past year has been transformative. Her vision for preparing students for today’s world and tomorrow’s possibilities has positioned our school as an engine of innovation and progress.
Your generosity fuels this momentum. What excites me most is witnessing our community’s collective impact. Students are developing solutions to real-world challenges, creating award-winning artistic works and launching social enterprises. Faculty members are constantly advancing in their disciplines while mentoring tomorrow’s innovators. Alumni are returning as entrepreneurs, researchers and leaders, creating pathways for current students to follow.
Thank you for partnering with us to build unstoppable momentum toward a brighter future.
With appreciation,
Jay Schwedelson Chair, 2024-25 Board of Trustees

“Pine Crest truly lives up to its values. When you emphasize kindness, it’s not just words—you actively teach students the importance of responsibility. When something happens, you don’t just overlook it; you take action and reinforce the lessons of accountability and respect.”

A PORTRAIT OF Leadership

“There aren’t many institutions that stay true to who they are for decades, while still being on the cutting edge. Pine Crest holds onto the values that made it special from the beginning, even as the world changes. They are true leaders.”
