re-ignite a fire. However, both Miller and Pine County Sheriff Jeff Nelson described the original Oct. 9 fire as “suspicious,” and said that both law enforcement and state fire officials would continue to search for a cause.
A Pine City man is dead after his vehicle went off the road and crashed near the Chengwatana State Forest on the evening of Oct. 6. The Pine County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 9:41 p.m. dispatchers received a report of a single vehicle rollover near the intersection of Evergreen Road and Holly Road northeast of Pine City. The caller also told dispatchers that the vehicle was on fire. Pine County deputies and firefighters from the Pine City Fire Department responded to the scene. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when responders arrived. Pine City firefighters were able to put out the fire, at which time a body was located within the vehicle. The position of the body within the vehicle appeared to show that the victim had been the driver. The body was transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office in Ramsey for autopsy and identification. Troopers from the Minnesota State Patrol are assisting the Pine County Sheriff’s Office with the accident investigation. On Oct. 8 the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office identified the crash victim as Richard Mullins, 54 of Pine City. The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Pine County Sheriff Jeff Nelson noted that, as there were no witnesses to the crash, the exact cause of the

Arson suspected in barn fire BY MIKE GAINOR EDITOR@PINECITYMN.COM
Law enforcement and fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire on Henriette Road this past Friday morning. The fire sprang up at around 3 a.m. on Oct. 9 in a converted barn building

Pine City Fire Chief Tom Miller said it is not unusual for a burned-out older building of that size to have embers trapped that could
County plans solid waste drop site, imposes new fee BY HENRY FISCHER NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM
A solid waste management fee will begin to show up on Pine County property tax statements next year. A fee of $6 for each improved taxable parcel will be designated as “HHW”
(household hazardous waste) in the special assessment line of statements that will be mailed out next spring. The Pine County Board of Commissioners approved the fee, which will allow the county to discontinue levying some $13,000 each year for waste disposal, and is designed to pay for the cost of
constructing a special building at the Hinckley Transfer Station, so that property owners can dispose of their solid waste at no charge. Land Services Director Kelly Schroeder said the fee applies to every taxable parcel in the county that has a building on it valued at $100 or more. It would
not apply to non-taxable property like churches and schools. She also noted that if a property owner has a structure on their property that burned down or is no longer there, they can contact the County Assessor’s office who, in turn, SEE SOLID WASTE, PAGE 18
