DRAGONS ROUT REBELS: Football team earns sweet victory in Moose Lake. P10
Debate rages over pipeline pros, cons BY AILENE CROUP NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM
Enbridge’s Line 3 Replacement Project has supporters and detractors. The Public Utilities Commission, which regulates electricity, natural gas and telephone, is gathering testimony from both sides and will make a decision about whether Enbridge can detour from the route of the existing Line 3 and take a new route. “Green Shirt” supporters and pipeline protesters, mostly Native Americans along with a few environmentalists, exercised their right to comment at a public hearing held at Grand Casino Hinckley Oct. 12. LINE 3 With 34,410 miles of pipelines, nearly three-fourths the number of miles in the U.S. Interstate highway system, Enbridge moves crude oil and natural gas. It also transports products by rail and ship and operates under 47 subsidiary companies ranging from offshore pipelines, to gas transmission, drilling and marketing. Line 3, built in the 1960s, runs from Edmonton Alberta, Canada to Superior, Wisconsin. Of the 1,097 mile length of the line, 364 of those miles are in the

United States across North Dakota and Minnesota. Though the pipeline is mostly underground and out of sight, Minnesota property taxes paid yearly by Enbridge are more than $30 million. This will increase by $19.5 million on the new route when the project is complete. The U.S. portion of the line replacement will total $2.6 billion with $2.1 billion of that being spent in Minnesota which includes the deactivation of the current Line 3. Seventy-five percent of the Line 3 replacement will follow the current route. The remaining 25 percent, if the certificate of need is approved, will follow a new more southerly path to Superior across the wetlands and wild rice lakes from Park Rapids east through Carlton County. In the path of the proposed pipeline are some wild rice areas and it will also disturb some wetlands and lakes. However, it will not cross tribal lands.

‘Children of Joy’ a boon for busy families BY SHIRLEY SCHMIDT NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM
A new preschool and daycare has opened in Pine City to serve young working families. For both parents that work, this blended program offers unique options. Children of Joy Preschool is located in a sunny room overlooking a garden at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. All children are welcome – all cultures, faiths, races and abilities. Open at 6 a.m. until 6 p.m., this preschool offers care for the entire
day. Children age three through five until the child can attend kindergarten are eligible for enrollment. The school follows the public school calendar and sessions began this fall. The director and lead teacher of this new endeavor is Lauren Johnson. She graduated from Bethel University with a degree in elementary education then earned her teaching certificate. Her previous experience is with second and seventh grade children, plus she has an 18-month-old son. Assisting Johnson is Casey
Tyberg. She is the mother of two teenage daughters and serves at Journey North Church with preschool children. Both Johnson and Tyberg love working with children and are thrilled with this opportunity. RESIDENTS COLLABORATE In the spring of 2016, a team of Our Redeemer members convened to study options for a preschool. The group visited the preschool at Cross of Hope Church in Ramsey and found an impressive model to
