This castle dungeon is full of Dragons A group of Pine City High School Choir students went on a whirlwind tour of Europe this summer with the Minnesota Ambassadors of Music. Overall were 370 students from around Minnesota who participated in a whirlwind tour of Europe, singing and sightseeing through seven different countries. Pine City students are pictured here in the dungeon of the Castle of Chillon in Montreaux, Switzerland: Emily Schueller, Ally Chromey, Gabby Alleman, Emily James, Charlee Johanson, Jacob Merrick, Nate Webster, Ashley Faur, Leah Westerman, Chloe Johnson and Nick Hansmann.

A Rush City man has been charged with three felonies after allegedly injuring his friend with a semi while intoxicated, then leaving the scene without calling 911. On Aug. 23 at around 8:20 p.m., Pine County dispatch received a phone call reporting a farm accident where a person was pinned between a semi trailer and a skid loader. Little information was able to be provided because of a poor cell phone signal, but deputies responded to 560th Street and Ivy Avenue east of Rock Creek. At the scene, deputies found a semi blocking 560th Street. It appeared to the deputies that the semi had been traveling west and attempted to turn into a farm field. The semi was stuck because the front driver’s side tire was on an

embankment. A man was being held upright by another person at the scene. He was clearly injured: one of his legs was dangling and had serious deformities. There was broken glass on the roadway. The semi driver – later identified as Cody William Werner, 27 – could not be located at the scene. The injured man said that he and the semi driver, later identified as Werner, were in the semi together when the vehicle stalled. They tried to pull onto the field but got stuck. A nearby person on a skid steer agreed to help them get unstuck. The injured man said he was attempting to attach a chain between the vehicles when Werner backed up suddenly, hitting the skid steer and pinning the injured man between the semi and skid steer. Dragon Food Shelf aims to help out hungry students BY MIKE GAINOR EDITOR@PINECITYMN.COM

Pine City High School students in need of a good meal at home will be able to find a little help at school this years. Dihanna Fedder of Pine City High School said that students in grades 7-12 can request access to the food shelf or they can be referred by a teacher. “They can come down and meet with Mrs. Thieman at the reception window,” Fedder explained. “She will provide them with a key

and give them instructions.” Students will given a cinch sack which they can fill with non-perishable food items to eat at school or bring home, with a maximum amount of 10 pounds every two weeks. “So each student could have 20 pounds of additional groceries each month,” Fedder said. “There’s no cost. It’s strictly 100 percent donation.” She said that the Dragon Food Shelf was inspired by a visit to the Alexandria Area High School, which has a similar program

that has found success in helping students who may be facing bare shelves at home. “I thought, ‘We can do this,’” Fedder said. “So we got it started.” At 8 a.m. on Aug. 27, student volunteers were busy stocking the shelves of a closet near the district office that has been transformed into the Dragon Food Shelf pantry. Most of the donated food was what Fedder called “teen-friendly food items.” “You can see we’ve got mac and SEE FOOD, PAGE 8
