SH A MONG —T he I nd ia n M il ls Volunteer Fire Company and Shamong Emergency Medical Squad (EMS), which provide all-volunteer emergency fire and medical services to Shamong Township, are in desperate need of manpower.
Indian Mills Volunteer Fire Company Chief John Smith, along with Charles Burgin, president of the Indian Mills Volunteer Fire Company, and Michele Wells, chief of Shamong EMS, are pleading with the public to step up and help, if able. “We can’t keep going on (like this),”
said Smith at a Sept. 3 Shamong Township Committee meeting, noting that several active members of the organizations are over the age of 70. Smith said that when he first joined the fire company in 1972, it had 45 members. See VOLUNTEERS/ Page 20
BASS RIVER—Discussions between Great Bay Regional EMS Squad 85, the New Gretna Volunteer Fire Company and Bass River Board of Commissioners to allow Squad 85 to be the primary ambulance service provider in town again after being let go in June in favor of a paid ambulance service, Quality Medical Transport, have been brought to a standstill. Squad 85 Captain Jay Zimmerman and New Gretna Volunteer Fire Company Chief Tom “Tommy” Wetmore, at an August Bass River Board of Commissioners meeting, had announced that the parties worked out a tentative plan where Squad 85 and Quality would be dispatched at the same time to respond to emergency medical calls. Wetmore said if Squad 85 has a crew available, it would be able to call off Quality. Zimmerman said that with dual dispatch, if “Quality signs on” to an emergency prior to Squad 85, the closest ambulance to the emergency scene would respond.
