Washington Residents Say Disorderly Behavior on the Mullica Is Now Leading to Property Damage with Mayor Wanting to Petition for Permanent Reduced Bridge Openings to Alleviate Situation; Mullica Twp. Leader Says Lack of On-Demand Openings Due to Bridge Issue is Creating ‘Bottleneck’ By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer

WASHINGTON—An “out of control” situation of purported law breaking and other rambunctious behavior on Washington Township roads and along the Mullica River, a waterway that serves as the boundary between Burlington and Atlantic Counties, or between Washington and Egg Harbor City/Mullica Township, described by numerous Washington

residents and officials during summertime meetings of the Washington Township Committee, has not improved, they say, but actually has worsened in some cases during the last month, with it particularly bad over the Labor Day weekend, despite vows by the New Jersey State Police to step up enforcement activities in the area. And now the Washington mayor has expressed he would like to petition Atlantic County, in charge of the Green Bank Bridge, to petition the U.S. Coast

Guard to reduce the draw bridge’s openings permanently, after observing that when there was a reduction in openings last month due to mechanical and electrical issues with the bridge, it brought a brief respite to the purported problems on the waterway. Although there are reports that Atlantic County recently petitioned the U.S. Coast Guard to authorize a permanent reduction in the bridge openings over concerns with See MULLICA/ Page 13

SHAMONG—The Lenape Regional High School District (LRHSD) has released a list of projects that comprise a “tax-neutral” $66,628,944 bond referendum that will appear on the General Election ballot this fall in the district’s eight sending municipalities (Evesham, Medford, Medford Lakes, Mount Laurel, Shamong, Southampton, Tabernacle, and Woodland), which includes HVAC upgrades, air conditioning, turf fields and classroom modifications to support career pathway programs. Should voters approve the referendum, “the state debt service aid percentage will equal 40 percent of the annual debt service due with respect to the final eligible costs of the projects,” states a copy of the bond proposal question. According to Superintendent Dr. Carol Birnbohm, during an Aug. 25 LRHSD Board of Education meeting in which the governing body approved the bond proposal to be decided by voters, that equates to the state providing the district with about $24 million in “special state aid” toward the planned projects, or covering about 36 percent of the total project costs, though she emphasized that aid will only come about upon voter approval of the referendum. As previously reported by this newspaper, Birnbohm announced in July that the district’s financial advisors and bond counsel determined that such a contribution from the state combined with “an old debt payoff” See PROPOSAL/ Page 8
