PEMBERTON—Despite meeting after meeting of public protest, Pemberton Tow nsh ip Cou nci l vote d 4 - 0 last Wednesday to dissolve the Pemberton Township Municipal Utilities Authority (PTMUA), which currently operates a 2.5 million gallons-per-day activated-sludge wastewater-treatment plant providing

sanitary services to Pemberton Township and part of Pemberton Borough. The dissolution, unless stopped in court, will take effect at 12 a.m. on Jan. 1. At that time, the PTMUA’s operations will be transferred to the Pemberton Township Department of Public Works. The Oct. 2 council meeting was the longest one that longtime Pemberton Township political observers could ever

recall, running almost five hours in length. It began with confusion. Copies of the ordinance authorizing the dissolution of the PTMUA, which was still in a proposed state at the time, was distributed to the public by officials prior to the meeting beginning. BASS RIVER—Joan L. Allen, the owner of Breezes Restaurant and Allen’s Clam Bar, locally renowned eateries both located in the New Gretna section of Bass River Township, off Route 9, has passed away. Allen, who was 72, succumbed on Oct. 6 to a long battle with cancer, according to a statement released by Breezes Restaurant. “Joan passed away p eacef u l ly at her home, sur rounded b y f a m i l y,” t h e statement read in part. “Her positive presence will forever be felt at our ALLEN establishment.” Bass River Mayor Deborah Buzby-Cope held a moment of silence at the Bass River Board of Commissioners’ Oct. 7 meeting after announcing to the public that Allen had died just a day earlier. “Joan will be sadly missed in Bass River,” the mayor said. “She raised her family and ran successful businesses here.
