Democrats on Verge of One-Party Rule on Freeholder Board, Win Sheriff’s Office By Danny Master Staff Writer

WESTAMPTON—Democrats will have one-party rule on the Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders when it reorganizes in January after voters elected Democrat incumbent Daniel J. O’ Connell to fill an unexpired two-year term on the board, and Democrat Linda Hynes to fill a full-term on the board in Tuesday’s General Election. O’ Connell, a 60-year county resident and former locomotive engineer and leader of the United Transportation Union, garnered 50,396 votes Tuesday and defeated Hainesport Committeewoman and realtor Republican Lee Schneider, who only received 41,421 votes. Hynes, a practicing attorney, who received 51,025 votes Tuesday, bested Republican Freeholder and union worker Latham Tiver, who only received 41,493 votes. Tiver is currently the only member of the GOP serving on the freeholder board after Democrats gained control of it for the first time in nearly 45 years in January, following a November 2018 election. Democrats are also on the verge of taking control of the Burlington County Sheriff’s Department for the first time in decades after Democrat Anthony Basantis, a 15-year officer of the department, defeated its undersheriff, Republican Michael Ditzel, who joined the See DEMOCRATS/ Page 19
