Outgoing Southampton Township School District Superintendent Michael Harris.

While Michael Harris May Be on the Verge of Retiring from His Longtime Post as Southampton School Chief, He Plans to Remain an ‘Equitable Education’ Activist ByAndy Milone Staff Writer

SOUTHAMPTON—After more than a quarter century as an administrator in the Southampton Township School District, Superintendent Michael Harris will call it a career at the end of this year. But he won’t quite be calling it quits when it comes to trying to influence the future of education in New Jersey. While Harris, 66, looks forward to enjoying some of the personal pleasures that retirement will allow him to pursue, such as spending time with his two grandkids, he revealed in a Nov. 19 interview with the Pine Barrens Tribune that he has every intention of remaining actively involved in the field that has been the focal point of his life for four decades. For example, he plans to continue his involvement with the Support Our Students (SOS) initiative, a coalition, which he currently chairs, made up of officials from

more than 100 school districts who work together to shed light on Senate Bill (S-2) and what they believe to be unfair cuts in state aid imposed on many school districts the state has deemed overfunded because, in part, of a drop in enrollment. SOS believes some school districts may have seen a decline in enrollment, but costs to operate school districts have only increased with new mandates and demands, and that S-2 helps some districts at the expense of others. SOS or working toward a solution that will ensure that every child and teen in New Jersey receives the adequate education he or she deserves is a personal passion Harris has no plans on stepping away from anytime soon, he revealed to this newspaper. “Once I got into it (the revised school funding formula created through S-2) and learned about it, what I learned is that it is smoke and mirrors with how they are calculating educational funding, and there needs to be equity for every student in this

state,” declared Harris, adding that rather than having losers and winners, “every student should have access to an equitable education.” In the meantime, while people continue to ask him if he is counting down the days toward retirement, he says he isn’t, at least not yet. After having been immersed in the day-to-day operations of the same school district for the past 26 years, he noted that, “There is always going to be more to do.” Being constantly busy, he noted, has kept his mind off the calendar in these final days as superintendent, but he acknowledged that soon it will be time to “turn the reins over to the next generation.” His career in education has spanned some 40 years, more than 15 of which have been spent as Southampton’s chief education officer. During this time, he said See REBOOT/ Page 11

SHAMONG—The daughter of a Shamong Township woman who was previously indicted for alleged animal cruelty crimes that made national headlines is now facing criminal charges of her own after authorities allege she illegally provided medication to treat a sick puppy that she sold while falsely claiming to be a member of an animal rescue group. Dawn Abrams, 46, of Shamong, was taken into custody on Nov. 13 by detectives from the Red Lion Barracks of the New Jersey State Police. She was charged with third-degree impersonation, third-degree unlicensed practice of medicine and fourth-degree unlawful distribution of prescription drugs. See MEDS/ Page 11

Controversial Town Clerk Submits Her Resignation to Washington Township By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer

WASHINGTON—Kathleen D. Hoffman, both a polarizing and prominent figure in area local government affairs, has apparently offered to resign as the part-time township clerk of Washington Township for “personal reasons.” Hoffman’s apparent resignation letter, dated Nov. 10 and later obtained by this newspaper through an Open Public Records Act (OPRA) request, however, does not stipulate when it is to take effect, nor does it contain some of the basic formalities such as a signature or address See CLERK/ Page 6
