PEMBERTON BOROUGH—A 25-yearold patrolman with the Pemberton Borough Police Department, with a track record of helping others in need, is now receiving much needed assistance from the community, and his brothers in blue, during his hour of need. Carmelo “Carmen” Sorce, who joined the borough police force in September 2017 and was promoted to a full-time position on the force in January, was diagnosed with testicular cancer in June, according to a GoFundMe fundraising page posted online by his girlfriend, Alex Filippone. “Carmen has always been healthy and active and has had no outstanding medical history,” Filippone wrote. “When Carmen was diagnosed with testicular cancer this past June, it took everyone by surprise.” Sorce, who underwent surgery to remove a malignant mass just five days after his initial diagnosis, according to Filippone, kept his cancer battle private and returned to work just two months later. “Carmen’s surgery was successful in removing the tumor, and the tumor level markers in his blood count continued to drop over the two-month time period he was home recovering from surgery,” Filippone wrote. Sorce even attended a swearing-in ceremony for Pemberton Borough Patrolmen Zachary Rodina, Steven Ferlisi and Matthew Pedrick in September. However, Sorce received news of a cancer See PATROLMAN/ Page 12
