As Republicans Fight to Hold onto 8th District in Toss Up Race, Peters Touts Need to Change Conversation in State Assembly While Democrats Contend Advocates Needed in Statehouse

Staff Writer

SOU T H A M P TON — Republ ica n Ryan Peters, who represents New Jersey’s 8th Legislative District in the state Assembly and is currently a commander in the Naval Reserve, assigned to SEAL Team EIGHTEEN, along with his running mate, nowretired Republican Burlington County Sheriff Jean Stanfield, have spent the final days of their General Election

campaign trying to fend off a challenge from Democrats Gina LaPlaca and Mark Natale, both of whom want to fully flip the district blue after the controversial defection of state Senator Dawn Marie Addiego from the GOP to the Democratic party in January. The 8th District race Tuesday is not only considered competitive, but has been deemed one of the most-watched in the state this election cycle given that several Democratic pickups occurred

Addiego’s party affiliation change has also added an interesting dynamic to the toss-up race— especially the resulting fallout between 8th District Assemblyman Joseph Howarth and Peters. Four Vie to Become Burlco’s New Sheriff By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer

SOUTHAMPTON—Four men, three of whom are current officers of the Burlington County Sheriff’s Department, are vying Tuesday to become its next, permanent leader after Jean Stanfield relinquished her badge on May 1 as county sheriff after having served six terms in office beginning in 2002. The agency’s acting sheriff is Diane Jassmann, who started as an intern in the department in 1996 and worked her way up to chief, before assuming the duties of undersheriff and sheriff. Jassmann, who is not running for elected office, was chosen by Stanfield to serve as acting sheriff through January to prevent major political rifts in the department during the election cycle. Two of the four men running for sheriff; Republican Michael Ditzel, who joined the department in 2006 after serving in the U.S. Coast Guard and now serves as undersheriff; and Democrat Anthony Basantis, who joined the department as a career law enforcement officer almost 15 years ago and just stepped down as president of the Burlington County Sheriff’s Officers FOP Lodge #166 due to his candidacy, discussed their platforms and experience during a recent forum held in the LeisureTowne section of Southampton Township. Ditzel, a Medford Lakes resident and father of two, said he spent a good part of his law enforcement career in the sheriff’s department’s Fugitive Unit. “During this time, I spent a lot of time tracking down the worst-of-the-worst,” he said. “We received numerous awards for apprehending several violent offenders. One case I take a lot of pride in is when we apprehended a violentsexual offender who was on the run for 20 years. This arrest got national media attention.” See SHERIFF/ Page 23
