Testing Reveals Presence of Three Mosquito-Borne Viruses in Burlington County Posing ‘Significant Threat to Humans;’ Public Urged to Utilize ‘Four D’s’ Preventative Technique By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer
WOODLAND—Officials are urging area residents to take action in and around their homes to reduce potential mosquito breeding grounds, and to be more diligent in preventing mosquito bites, after testing has revealed the presence in Burlington County of three mosquito-borne viruses that “pose a significant threat to humans.”
Testing in Burlington County has revealed the presence of Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus, West Nile Virus and Jamestown Canyon Virus in mosquitoes, according to Nicholas Gangemi, a spokesman for Burlington County. While there have been no known cases of any of the three mosquito-borne illnesses in Burlington County residents as of press time, officials with the Burlington
County Health Department and Burlington County Mosquito Control are urging the public to follow “the four D’s technique” of DRAINING standing water routinely, using an insect repellant with DEET, being especially careful at DUSK and DAWN, and DRESSING in long sleeves and pants where mosquitoes are active. LITTLE EGG HARBOR—Officials with the Pinelands Regional School District are “very, very close” to reopening Pinelands Regional Senior High School for the beginning of the 2019-20 school year, according to Business Administrator Nick Brown on Aug. 21, after the building was closed for the entire 2018-19 school year to allow for invasive repairs to be made to it as part of a $53 million voter-approved bond referendum. “The tools are leaving,” said Brian Moore; site manager of Epic Management, a construction firm retained by the district to supervise the project in the wake of controversy involving a previous management firm; also to the Pinelands Regional Board of Education on Aug. 21. “The supplies are leaving. The equipment is running and the inspections are in the process of being wrapped up.” However, district officials’ expectations that the high school work would be completed in time for a scheduled 9 a.m., Aug. 28 student and parent orientation and public walkthrough of the building fell short, causing officials on Aug. 27 to abruptly reschedule the event for Sept. 4 at 9 a.m. Some in the school community, already sore over a number of inconveniences the project has created and a last-minute decision to move up the Class of 2019 graduation by a couple hours See PINELANDS/ Page 22
