‘Numerous’ Southampton Residents Affected by Major Flood Make Application to State’s Flood-Prone Properties Buyout Program By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer

SOUTHAMPTON—When the Rancocas Creek stays where it is supposed to be, it is great, said resident Larry Foster recently of why the majority of homeowners, who reside in Southampton Township’s flood-

prone areas, chose to stay put and rebuild each time flooding affected their homes, beginning with the first major flood in 2004. Dead end streets alongside the Rancocas Creek with virtually no traffic, and opportunities for fishing, boating, canoeing and kayaking are just some of the many

PEMBERTON—Residents of Sunbury Village, and a stakeholder with a vested interest in the Pemberton Township community, are once again calling on Pemberton Township Council to have surveillance cameras installed in the beleaguered, high-crime neighborhood. The movement is picking up momentum, with more stakeholders this month expressing their support for the cameras. The latest calls for action follow a pair of July 19 shootings in the neighborhood that left an unidentified 20-year-old man injured and another man, Witney Rivera, 41, of 183 Kinsley Road, dead. No arrests have been made in connection to the first shooting of the 20-year-old man. Rivera, who the state Attorney General’s Office said was reported by civilian witnesses to be armed with a long scythe during an altercation in Sunbury Village, was fatally shot by a Pemberton Borough Police Department officer responding to reports of the altercation shortly after the first shooting. The borough is within a minute of Sunbury Village and commonly shares its resources with the township. The police involved shooting remains under investigation by the state Attorney General’s Office. The shootings were followed by a tense standoff between residents of the neighborhood and police, in which helicopter footage from WPVI-TV (6 ABC) showed officers being pushed and shoved. Eyewitness accounts from the ground also indicate that bottles were being See CAMERAS/ Page 15
