MEDFORD—An ongoing campaign to have a skatepark in Medford Township’s Freedom Park upgraded and expanded, prior to the building of four previously-approved pickleball courts for the park, is resulting in a kind of classic generational division between enthusiasts of two increasingly trendy but very different forms of recreation. On one side are pickleball proponents, who mostly tend to be middle-aged and older folks trying to either hold onto or revive their athletic agility by engaging in what has been described as a kind of hybrid between tennis and ping pong, involving generally less strain on the body than the former. In Medford Township, pressure from residents who wanted pickleball facilities made available to them resulted in an allocation being included in the 2020-21 budget for the courts, which are now in the planning phase.
