In Being Sworn in as the New Chief of Medford’s 36-Member Police Force, Art Waterman Is Also Sworn to Enhancing His Community’s Quality of Life

By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer

MEDFORD—After taking charge of the 36-member Medford Township Police Department in July, Police Chief Arthur E. Waterman was publicly sworn in and given a rousing reception during a Medford Township Council meeting last month,

later telling this newspaper that policing entails “always looking for ways to enhance the quality of life for our residents” and that he will continue to put an “emphasis on community,” as did his predecessor. “We don’t often get to swear in a chief of police,” said Mayor Charles “Chuck” Watson after the Sept. 21 ceremony,

calling the swearing-in of Waterman an “honor” for both him and other members of the governing body. It was something that nobody sitting on the Medford Township Council dais, comprised of several veteran members, had ever gotten a chance to do before, the See CHIEF/ Page 6

PEMBERTON—In making his first appearance before Pemberton Township Council since Council President Gaye Bur ton called on h i m to update the governing body about the Pemberton Township Police Department’s ongoing efforts to address quality of life issues in Sunbury Village, Acting Police Chief David King instead found himself addressing quality of life issues in another township community, Presidential Lakes. In what evolved into a “freewheeling discussion,” but admittedly an “interesting one,” as Tow nsh ip Solicitor Andrew “Andy” Bayer put it, township officials, including King, heard from a couple about the impacts “quads, ATVs and dirt bikes and all the other fun-loving things that go zipping by” on township streets in Presidential Lakes were having on their health and ability to sleep, and how riding the equipment was reportedly being used “as an excuse” by individuals “to commit high crimes in this area.” “Chief, do you have any knowledge that this is drug related?” asked Burton pointblank to King following the descriptions that had been offered by the couple during Pemberton Township Council’s Sept. 15 session.
