EVESHAM—While the barrage of criticism aimed at police in recent years, including moves to defund them, might tend to create the perception that, as a Gilbert and Sullivan song once put it, “a policeman’s lot is not a happy one,” the mission of Police Chief Christopher Chew could perhaps best be summed up as a dedicated effort to make it considerably better on both a local and national level. Turning policing into not only a happier but a healthier profession, as well as one that’s

more in harmony with the other elements of community life, has been a principal objective of the ground-breaking and widely recognized reforms Chew has introduced during his eightand-a-half years at the helm of the Evesham Township Police Department.
