About the Cover: “I had my Senior pictures taken in Historic Downtown Casa Grande in March, as this was my last year being able to show at the Pinal County Fair—so I wanted it to be as memorable as possible! The theme of “Country Girl in a City World” stuck out to me as I’ve grown up on the outskirts of Casa Grande for 18 years, and have watched as my small town has become not so small, anymore. I couldn’t think of a better place to embody this theme than Historic Downtown Casa Grande and the Neon Sign Park. While taking Todd and Copper (my Holstein Angus calves seen in the picture) for walks through Downtown to capture my pictures, I had the most amazing conversations with store owners and community-members where I was able to tell them about my seven years in 4H and how much it has impacted my life. As someone with deep roots in Casa Grande, it meant a lot to be able to capture my love of the 4H community along with the love for my city in one picture.”– Mary Rakoci

WHAT IS Casa Grande Main Street?
Casa Grande Main Street is a nonprofit 501c3 organization working on downtown revitalization and historic preservation. Casa Grande Main Street works to revitalize historic and traditional commercial areas. The Main Street approach was developed to save historic commercial architecture and the fabric of American communities, but has become a powerful economic development tool as well. The Main Street program is designed to improve all aspects of Downtown, producing both tangible and intangible benefits. Strengthening public participation and making Downtown a fun place to visit are as critical to Main Street’s future as recruiting new businesses, rehabilitation buildings and expanding parking. Building on Downtown’s inherent assets–rich architecture, personal service, traditional values and most of all a sense of place–the Main Street approach has rekindled downtown cooperation, entreprenuerism and civic concern. It has earned national recognition as a practical strategy appropriately scaled to local resources

In 2019, I joined the Casa Grande Fire Department and discovered my real calling in life. Giving back to the community that helped shape me has been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done. Jessica, my wife, recently became a registered nurse and now works at our local hospital. Our two children are our world, and we consider ourselves fortunate to be able to raise them in the community where I grew up.

Doors to the Past Request for Artist Proposals
Help shape the next 10 years of preservation & beautification in Historic Downtown Casa Grande
Selected artists will receive $550 Scan here for the application!
Past “Doors to the Past” winners
Casa Grande Main Street is seeking new artwork from local artists in order to create “new” Doors to the Past. The Doors to the Past is a staple historic preservation project located in Historic Downtown Casa Grande on the northeast corner of 3rd Street and Florence Street. Completed in 2013, each of the nine doors represents a piece of Casa Grande’s history as interpreted by a local artist. Due to ten years of Arizona weather, these current Doors to the Past are cracking and falling apart. This program is designed to incorporate a wide variety of artists and new interpretations of Casa Grande’s history into the Historic Downtown Casa Grande district.
There
are currently three doors still available for local artists!
CINDY SCHAIDER
My Door to the Past depicts the 1940 Southern Pacific Train Station, previously located at Main and Sacaton streets. The original wooden depot, brought to Casa Grande from Yuma board by board and rebuilt, burned on June 13, 1937. On January 15, 1940 the new railroad station, with Pueblo Deco Cast Concrete Ornamentation, was dedicated. On June 5, 2009 it was destroyed by fire.
In front of the station are seven pieces of luggage upon a luggage wagon and cart, all of which has been represented in a period-appropriate manner. Each piece of luggage is marked with the name of a prominent 1940's Casa Grandean, representing both men and women and four ethnicities: Fanne Gaar, Judge Pete Overfield, Peter H. Ethington, Blodie Thode, Rebecca Dallis, Ramon Cruz Jr., and Oi Shau Don.
Past “Doors to the Past” winners
NICHOLE KLUTH
The goal of my door is to show that the coming of the Railroad brought with it so much success. The engine includes images of some of the historic buildings that housed the businesses and life that came as a result of the railroad, and the “birth” of Casa Grande.
ELIZABETH ROBBINS
Heritage Hall is one of the more historical and unique structures in Casa Grande. It was built in 1927 and was originally used as a church. Now, it serves as a meeting place for the community and is seen any time one goes Downtown on Florence Blvd. The door has been dedicated to the memory of Elizabeth Robbin’s brother, Tyler Robbins.

To create these drawings, I start with about ten reference photos of whatever place I am going to illustrate. I try to have photos of different times of day and different angles to make sure I can see fine details underneath shadows and other imperfections. I work digitally but do a mix of freehand and trace illustration to accomplish these drawings. The digital drawings are 30 inches by 30 inches in size, and are quite large when blown up to their actual proportions
Each drawing takes an average of 1012 hours - the process is highly meditative. I often listen to music or NPR, and draw every fine line and detail - every crack in the pavement on a driveway, every line in the bricks, every slant and shadow on the facade lettering of a business. This process can become almost mindless after a point, where I am focused on such a microscopic detail of the illustration that I am simply thinking about completing this rather than the sum of all of the lines.
When the drawing has been
completed as a raw illustration without color, I then begin sampling the colors from the original illustration to repaint and texture the illustration, square by square, until it has a palette that represents what was originally there.
I sometimes choose a single color from which to do iterations - a blue or a yellow or a pink. I will only use grays, light colors, and other variations to create the entire image. I love how grays and other dull colors can bring the brightest color in an image alive.
When this is all said and done, I bring the illustration up to full size on my largest monitor and scan it for any imperfections. It is then ready to go! I print it and frame it, and bring it to the business (whenever possible) to make sure they have the first copy. In some cases I find them online and send them a digital copy first. But it's my goal to ensure any business owner sees this work.

For nearly 40 years we’ve been helping people. It’s a mission and calling we take seriously.
