WHAT IS Casa Grande Main Street?

Casa Grande Main Street is a nonprofit 501c3 organization working on downtown revitalization and historic preservation. Casa Grande Main Street works to revitalize historic and traditional commercial areas. The Main Street approach was developed to save historic commercial architecture and the fabric of American communities, but has become a powerful economic development tool as well. The Main Street program is designed to improve all aspects of Downtown, producing both tangible and intangible benefits. Strengthening public participation and making Downtown a fun place to visit are as critical to Main Street’s future as recruiting new businesses, rehabilitation buildings and expanding parking. Building on Downtown’s inherent assets–rich architecture, personal service, traditional values and most of all a sense of place–the Main Street approach has rekindled downtown cooperation, entreprenuerism and civic concern. It has earned national recognition as a practical strategy appropriately scaled to local resources and conditions.

MISSION STATEMENT

To support the vision of Historic Downtown by enhancing the economic vitality, promoting and marketing the District, fostering partnerships and acting as the lead advocate for Historic Downtown and it’s historic preservation.

VISION STATEMENT

Downtown will be an exciting, visually appealing, easily accessible, safe, balanced mix of uses that integrates residential, office, retail, entertainment, dining and cultural and civic activities that is recognized as the heart of the community.

Award Winning Neon Sign Park

Casa Grande Main Street, through a grant from Partners in Preservation and American Express Foundation, as well as through a partnership with Casa Grande Valley Newspapers Inc., was able to authentically restore 14 historic signs that now serve as an outdoor museum between the Downtown commercial district to the Downtown arts, culture, and entertainment district.

I believe that is what motivated me to also become a business owner. I currently am the owner of DownTown Ice Cream Shop, located in Downtown Casa Grande, and also am involved with Downtown Mainstreet. I have been a RN in the community for the last 22 years.

RICHARD ROSALES // SECRETARY

My name is Joe Leos, and I was born and raised in Casa Grande. I attended Arizona State University after graduating from CGUHS in 2005 and obtained a degree in Tourism Development and Management. For ten years, I worked in the luxury resort industry. After years of working in the corporate sector, I realized my true calling was community and giving back. In 2019, I joined the Casa Grande Fire Department and discovered my real calling in life. Giving back to the community that helped shape me has been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done. Jessica, my wife, recently became a registered nurse and now works at our local hospital. Our two children are our world, and we consider ourselves fortunate to be able to raise them in the community where I grew up.

the Don Family

THE QUINTESSENTIAL AMERICAN STORY:

DON MARKET & CASA GRANDE, ARIZONA

On the corner of Florence and First Streets in Casa Grande sits the old Don Market. If you drive by today, you’ll see it’s being renovated after many years of unuse. The story of Don Market is one of the American Dreams come true. It begins in 1881, when Sing Gee Don

traveled from Canton, China to Tucson and began working in a grocery store. His son, June Don, and his wife, Oi Shau Don, later joined him, and together they started Don Market in Casa Grande. Initially the family grocery store was on Main Street and then moved to Florence Street several years later. The Don family loved the town of Casa Grande. June quickly learned English, Spanish, and at least two Native American dialects. Eight of their children were born in Casa Grande, except for one son, Cleve, who was born on the USS President Cleveland and named in its honor. All of the children except Shirley, who passed away as a child, worked in the store at one time or another.

After June’s death, his sons Franklin and Cleve ran the business until their retirement in 1988, when their eldest sister, Fay Don, took over until closing the store in the early 1990s. Fay passed in 2020, and her sister Fanny Chew, who inherited the property, dreamed of restoring Don Market. She began the project in 2022 but passed in May 2024 at age 96. Her daughters are now working to make her dream a reality.

During its heyday, Don Market was a community hub where townspeople gathered, shopped on credit, and knew the staff by name. The butchers were renowned for their expertise. Don Market sponsored sports teams and supported charity drives, becoming a vital part of the community. Casa Grande embraced

this Chinese immigrant merchant and his family. All eight children were very active in school sports and clubs, graduating from Casa Grande Union High School. Two served with honor in the military during WWII.

Today, one son, retired Pinal County Attorney and Pinal County Superior Court Judge, James Don, still lives in Casa Grande. The Don family’s story lives on through many descendants who are dentists, surgeons, pharmacists, veterinarians, healthcare administrators, lawyers, therapists, researchers and more, continuing the legacy of the American Dream. All thanks to Casa Grande, that embraced and supported this family.

Casa Grande! Originally built in 2007, located at 847 N. Colorado Street, Southern Pavilion

Casa Grande has been serving Casa Grande’s storage needs for the past 11 years, with an emphasis on safety, service and community. We are so grateful to be a part of a growing City like Casa Grande with such diverse talents and accomplishments. Southern Pavilion does more than just offer safe and secure storage to our community, we are regularly involved with numerous fundraisers, non-profits, charities, and toy/ food drives every year. Southern Pavilion

Casa Grande also has an active Facebook page that we use to connect with folks all over town and to announce upcoming community and company events. We have some exciting events planned this year, so stay tuned! Our office also features a rich Resource Center where we have compiled a comprehensive list of wellrespected local businesses, along with complimentary coffee, tea and water. Feel free to stop by to meet us and add your business to the wall!
