Florence Community Services Activity Guide

Greetings Florence Community!
As we gear up for another scorching summer here in Florence, Arizona, it’s crucial to prioritize safety while enjoying the outdoors. Whether you’re exploring our parks or tackling the trails of Poston Butte, it’s essential to keep a few key factors in mind during the summer months. Here are some tips to ensure you and your loved ones have a fantastic and safe summer:
• Stay Hydrated: With temperatures soaring, it’s easy to become dehydrated. Always carry water with you, especially during outdoor activities. Take regular breaks in the shade to hydrate and cool down.
• Protect Yourself from the Sun: Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to shield yourself from harmful UV rays. Consider scheduling outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening.
• Dress Appropriately: Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in light colors to help reflect the sun’s rays and keep you cool. Don’t forget to wear comfortable and supportive footwear, especially if you’re hiking or exploring.
• Know Your Limits: Be mindful of your physical limits and listen to your body. If you start feeling overheated or fatigued, take a break in the shade and cool down. Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day.
In addition to outdoor safety, we also have some exciting summer programs lined up to keep you and your family active and entertained. Check out our comprehensive Activity Guide for details on upcoming events and programs offered by the Library and Recreation sections.
One of the highlight you will find in this Activity Guide is the return of the Missoula Children’s Theater program, catering to 1st to 12th graders. Refer to page 26 of the Activity Guide for more information on how to get involved.
Thank you for your continued support and participation in our community programs. Together, we can make this summer safe, enjoyable, and memorable for everyone.

Show Synopsis:

Missoula Children’s Theatre tour shows are designed for students entering 1st grade through 12th grade during the summer tour. We’ll cast approximately 60 students and up to four assistant directors. Open Auditions will take place on Monday, June 10th, 2024 at 10:00 am-12:00 pm held at the Florence K-8 Gym. No advanced preparation will be needed for auditions. Once participants get their roles rehearsals will follow.
The Missoula Children’s Theatre takes pride in presenting TREASURE ISLAND, an original adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s epic novel. Young Jim Hawkins, a mischievous lad, lives with his Mother and six Sisters in a seaside village on the coast of Maine. The year is 1782 and the American Revolutionary War is in its last days. Longing for adventure, Jim comes under the hypnotic spell of the legendary pirate, Long John Silver. While waiting tables in the family Inn, Jim finds a treasure map and, with the villainous Silver as his seeming mentor, sails uncharted seas with only the ragged map and a flock of gulls as guides. Always up for adventure, Jim’s Ruffian friends say farewell to their village parents and serve as cabin boys for Silver and his band of hilarious (although unsavory) Pirate types. Once on the island, nights are sleepless as true colors are revealed in our hero’s quest for the proverbial happy ending. Then - at last - the treasure is found and hand in hand we’re homeward bound.
